Cost-effective disinfection technology is urgently needed in poor rural areas. Erythrosine (ERY)-based solar disinfection (SODIS) provides a promising solution because of its effective inactivation of viruses and gram-positive bacteria at low cost. However, the poor gram-negative bacteria (G − , e.g., Escherichia coli ) inactivation of photosensitized ERY inhibits its application. Herein, for the first time, the protonation of ERY was found to greatly enhance its G − inactivation, and 99.99999% (7.0 log) of E. coli were completely inactivated within only 30 s using 2.5 mg/L ERY under 200 mW/cm 2 visible light irradiation. The inactivation rate constant ( k ) reached 17.5 min −1 at pH 4.0, which was 4730 times higher than that at pH 7.0. At a lower pH, more severe cell wall and genomic DNA damage was observed. A linear correlation between k and monoanionic ERY (HE − ) content was obtained, indicating that HE − rather than dianionic ERY (E 2− ) participated in the inactivation at pH 5.0–7.0, which was further explained by the higher production of reactive oxygen species and bacterial adsorption of HE − than E 2− . Both 1 O 2 and O 2 − • dominated bacterial inactivation, contributing 56.8% and 43.2%, respectively. O 2 − • but not 1 O 2 caused ERY photobleaching. OH • was not involved in either inactivation or photobleaching. Humic acid and salts (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , CaCl 2 , and MgCl 2 ) slightly inhibited inactivation, while NaHCO 3 accelerated inactivation. Complete inactivation (99.9999%) of E. coli was achieved within ∼30 min at pH 5.0 in ERY-based SODIS with good adaptation to various water matrices and weather (sunny or partly cloudy). This work will help to promote the application of ERY-based disinfection especially for SODIS in poor rural areas.

Conventional mining processes of rare earth elements (REEs) usually produce REEs-rich industrial waterwastes, which leads to a significant waste of REEs resources and causes serious environmental pollution. Biosorption using engineered microorganisms is an attractive technology for the recovery of REEs from aqueous solution. To regulate the REEs’ adsorption and recovery by sensing extraneous REEs, an engineered cascaded induction system , pmrCAB operon containing a lanthanide-binding tag (LBT) for sensing REEs, was incorporated into E. coli in conjunction with a silica-binding protein (Si-tag) and dLBT anchored onto the cell membrane. The sensing and adsorption capacities for Terbium (Tb), a typical study subject of REEs, were enhanced by screening an effective LBT and increasing the dLBT copy number. The adsorption capacity for Tb reached the highest reported value of 41.9 mg g −1 dry cell weight (DCW). After adhering the engineered cells onto the silica column surface through overexpressed Si-tag, a high recovering efficiency (> 90%) of Tb desorption could be obtained with 3 bed volumes of citrate solution. In addition, the engineered cells also possessed fairly good adsorption capacity of other tested REEs. Our findings showed that the recovery of REEs with high efficiency, selectivity and controllability from aqueous solution can be well achieved via specifically bio-engineered strains.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157:H7 ) is typically associated with food- and water-borne outbreaks, thus making continuous monitoring essential. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection, which harvests the unique photo-to-electric property of photoactive species, has emerged as an exciting tool for bioanalysis. However, the current attempts are mostly carried out in lab, and less explored in field. Here, a simple PEC aptasensor for E. coli O157:H7 was designed and optimized (LOD: 200 cfu/mL). To promote its field application, a portable PEC analyzer was further constructed with a miniaturized LED (3 V, 3 W) for excitation and a USB-type electrochemical workstation for detection. Meanwhile, a re-chargeable power bank (5 V, 20,000 mAh, originally used for cell phone charging) was explored to power the LED through a self-designed electrical circuit. In this manner, the PEC analyzer could work continuously for more than 12 h. To facilitate transportation or the portable PEC analyzer, all components were mounted into a suitcase (size: 42 × 34 × 17 cm 3 ; wight: ∼3.5 kg). To validate the applicability of the portable PEC analyzer, on-site detection of E. coli O157:H7 in an in-land river was carried out (> 8 h), demonstrating the bright potential of the portable PEC analyzer for field environmental monitoring.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease which is highly prevalent worldwide. However, no therapy for blocking OA pathogenesis is available currently. In this study, chondroitin sulfate (CS) E oligosaccharides were prepared and we identified disaccharide as the functional unit showing the strongest anti-complement activity and screened out complement C5 as its target in the complement system. We determined that CS-E disaccharide produced anti-inflammatory effects to treat OA by regulating the complement system: it inhibited the formation of complement-dependent complexes such as the membrane-attack complex (MAC) by targeting C5 and suppressed MAC-induced protein expression and the activation of downstream MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways accordingly. By identifying CS-E disaccharide which could be regarded as a complement regulator or inhibitor exhibiting high anti-complement activity and revealing its OA-alleviating mechanism, this study not only provides a new strategy for OA treatment and drug development, but also potentially offers a promising C5 target therapy for other associated diseases.

In recent decades, epidemiological, clinical, and experimental studies have demonstrated that a diet with antioxidant or anti-inflammatory function plays a central role in the prevention of atherosclerosis (AS). The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Cannabis seed oil (CO) administration on in vitro antioxidant capacity as well as blood lipid profiles, lipid peroxidation, inflammatory response, and endothelial cell integrity. Female ApoE–/– mice were fed a high-cholesterol diet and administrated with CO or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and seal oil by gavage for 8 weeks. The results show that CO administration reduced the levels of serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol at week 6. Additionally, a decrease in serum tumor necrosis factor α and nitric oxide was also observed. Moreover, results from CD31 staining and scanning electron microscopy revealed that CO treatment alleviated the endothelial cell damage and lipid deposition induced by a high-cholesterol diet. The ratio of lesion area to the total aorta area was 19.57% for the CO group, which was lower than the PBS control group (24.67%). Collectively, CO exerted anti-atherosclerotic effects by modulating serum lipid profiles and inflammatory responses and improving endothelial cell integrity and arterial lipid deposition. The results provide a promising preventive strategy for the early progression of AS.

BACKGROUND Rice grains can be contaminated easily by certain fungi during storage and in the market chain, thus generating a risk for humans. Most classical methods for identifying and rectifying this problem are complex and time-consuming for manufacturers and consumers. However, E-nose technology provides analytical information in a non-destructive and environmentally friendly manner. Two-feature fusion data combined with chemometrics were employed for the determination of Aspergillus spp. contamination in milled rice. RESULTS Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) indicated that the efficiency of fusion signals (‘80 th s values’ and ‘area values’) outperformed that of independent E-nose signals. Linear discriminant analysis showed clear discrimination of fungal species in stored milled rice for four groups on day 2, and the discrimination accuracy reached 92.86% by using an extreme learning machine (ELM). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis showed that the volatile compounds had close relationships with fungal species in rice. The quantification results of colony counts in milled rice showed that the monitoring models based on ELM and the genetic algorithm optimized support vector machine (GA-SVM) (R 2 = 0.924–0.983) achieved better performances than those based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) (R 2 = 0.877–0.913). The ability of the E-nose to monitor fungal infection at an early stage would help to prevent contaminated rice grains from entering the food chains. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that an E-nose coupled with ELM or GA-SVM algorithm could be a useful tool for the rapid detection of fungal infection in milled rice, to prevent contaminated rice from entering the food chain. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Purpose Combination chemotherapy is gradually receiving more attention because of its potential synergistic effect and reduced drug doses in clinical application. However, how to precisely control drug release dose and time using vehicles remains a challenge. This work developed an efficient drug delivery system to combat breast cancer, which can enhance drug effects despite reducing its concentration. Methods Controlled-release poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) scaffolds were fabricated by E-jet 3D printing to deliver doxorubicin (DOX) and cisplatin (CDDP) simultaneously. Results This drug delivery system allowed the use of a reduced drug dosage resulting in a better effect on the human breast cancer cell apoptosis and inhibiting tumor growth, compared with the effect of each drug and the two drugs administrated without PLGA scaffolds. Our study suggested that DOX-CDDP-PLGA scaffolds could efficiently destroy MDA-MB-231 cells and restrain tumor growth. Conclusions The 3D printed PLGA scaffolds with their time-programmed drug release might be useful as a new multi-drug delivery vehicle in cancer therapy, which has a potential advantage in a long term tumor cure and prevention of tumor recurrence.

The sensitization effect of graphene oxide (GO) on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chip sensors has been widely reported. However, the absence of a fixed value for selecting the GO solution concentration is a significant limitation for reproducing the experiments reported in the literature. In this study, linear functionalized polyethylene glycol (SH-PEG-NH 2 ) is used to modify the surfaces of bare gold chips, using flow and immersion methods to produce GO-film-covered SPR sensor chips. Deionized water and phosphate buffered saline are applied as refractive index variants to compare the changes in sensor performance following chip modification, and to determine the optimal concentrations of GO solution under the respective modification methods. Using a sensor chip modified with the optimal GO concentration enhances the ability of a 10-year-old device to detect the dengue virus (DENV) E-protein by 357% and enables the detection of antibody protein concentrations as low as 62.5 ng/mL. Satisfactory results were also obtained using a DENV-positive serum to verify the chip usage. The results of this study are of significance for future efforts involving the rapid preparation of accurate and low-cost GO-SPR biosensor chips.

For environmental remediation, it is significant to design membranes with good mechanical properties and excellent photocatalytic activity. In this work, RGO/TiO2membranes with heterogeneous structures and good photocatalytic efficiency were synthesized using the method of electrospinning combined with a thermal treatment process. In the binary nanocomposites, RGO was tightly adhered to TiO2fibers and by simply adjusting the loading of RGO, the strength and modulus of the fibrous membranes were improved. Notably, the RGO-permeated TiO2fibers exhibited 1.41 MPa in tensile strength and 140.02 MPa in Young’s modulus, which were 705% and 343% of the original TiO2fibers, respectively. Benefiting from the enhanced light response and the homogeneous and compact heterogeneous structure, the synthesized RGO/TiO2membranes displayed good antibacterial performance with a photocatalytic inactivation rate of 6 log againstE. coliwithin 60 min. This study offers a highly efficient alternative to inactivateE. colifor the synthesis of TiO2-based membranes.Keywords:RGO/TiO2;nanomembrane;photocatalytic;sterilization

As key interfaces for the disabled, optimal prosthetics should elicit natural sensations of skin touch or proprioception, by unambiguously delivering the multimodal signals acquired by the prosthetics to the nervous system, which still remains challenging. Here, a bioinspired temperature-pressure electronic skin with decoupling capability (TPD e-skin), inspired by the high-low modulus hierarchical structure of human skin, is developed to restore such functionality. Due to the bionic dual-state amplifying microstructure and contact resistance modulation, the MXene TPD e-skin exhibits high sensitivity over a wide pressure range and excellent temperature insensitivity (91.2% reduction). Additionally, the high-low modulus structural configuration enables the pressure insensitivity of the thermistor. Furthermore, a neural model is proposed to neutrally code the temperature-pressure signals into three types of nerve-acceptable frequency signals, corresponding to thermoreceptors, slow-adapting receptors, and fast-adapting receptors. Four operational states in the time domain are also distinguished after the neural coding in the frequency domain. Besides, a brain-like machine learning-based fusion process for frequency signals is also constructed to analyze the frequency pattern and achieve object recognition with a high accuracy of 98.7%. The TPD neural system offers promising potential to enable advanced prosthetic devices with the capability of multimodality-decoupling sensing and deep neural integration.

Recycling gold from e-waste is not only beneficial to environmental protection, but also to resource sustainability. However, it remains a great challenge due to the limitations of high cost, lengthy balance process and the interference of coexisting metals. Herein, a family of low-cost, nitrogen-rich content and acid-stable imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s, designated as P(nDVB-mVBIMCl)s, were synthesized for recovery of gold from e-waste. The obtained P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s achieves outstanding adsorption capacity (820.5 mg·g −1 ) and rapid equilibrium time (15 min) and satisfactory reusability (more than 8 cycles). XPS, EDS and ion chromatography revealed that the excellent adsorption performance was attributed to synergistic effect of ion exchange and chemical reduction. In addition, the P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s showed excellent selectivity for gold in actual e-waste leaching solution, exhibited satisfactory selectivity coefficient for Fe 3+ (1.46 × 10 4 ) and Ni 2+ (1.12 × 10 4 ), obtaining 23.4 karat high-purity gold after calcination. In addition, the P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s shows its good economic feasibility. Overall, this work provides a feasible adsorbent, which becomes a promising candidate for industrial gold recovery from e-waste.
