The reliable detection of environmental contaminants can correctly forecast the degree of environmental pollution that has occurred, which contributes to improving the environmental purification rate and maintaining the ecological balance. Herein, a novel hierarchical biomimetic catalysis MnO2@CuAl-CLDHs was designed and synthesized using a facile method, which exhibited significantly enhanced peroxidase-like activity due to the unique composition and hierarchical mesoporous structure. Under optimized operational conditions, a visible colorimetric array based on the superior nanozyme activity of MnO2@CuAl-CLDHs was developed for the quantitative determination of hydroquinone with a wide linear detection range (1–100 μM) and a low detection limit (0.183 μM). Simultaneously, our presented strategy could analyze hydroquinone in real water samples with high accuracy. Therefore, the bimetallic co-catalyzed nanozymes are expected to be the perfect replacement for natural enzymes to develop convenient and efficient sensors.

Fluoride is an essential element for humans, but its excessive intake can cause harm to health. Adsorption is recommended as one of the most widely applied, affordable and convenient defluorination technologies. In the present study, Mn–Zr–Ethanol (Mn–Zr–Et) composite was prepared by sol–gel method with ethanol used as a solvent and then utilized for the fluoride removal. The removal performance of fluoride by the Mn–Zr–Et adsorbent was investigated through batch experiments. The removal mechanism of fluorine was further studied through analyzing the characteristics of the Mn–Zr–Et adsorbent. Results show that the integration of ethanol with Mn–Zr adsorbent could greatly enhance the removal capacity of fluoride when compared to the Mn–Zr adsorbent, where the adsorption capacity of Mn–Zr–Et adsorbent was 32.87 mg g −1 at the initial fluoride concentration of 50 mg L −1 . The Mn–Zr–Et adsorbent had the advantages of fast adsorption rate, wide pH adaptation range and resistance to interference of coexisting anions. To sum up, the Mn–Zr–Et composite is a promising and green adsorbent for the highly efficient removal of fluoride. Graphical Abstract

MnSO 4 -modified biochar (Mn-BC) was synthesized to remove berberine hydrochloride (BH) from wastewater by utilizing tea waste as raw material and MnSO 4 as modifier. Brunel Emmett Taylor (BET) analysis reveals that the specific surface area (SSA) and average pore size (D ave ) of Mn-BC are 1.4 and 7 times higher than those of pristine biochar apart, attributing to the dissociation effect can promote the dispersion of MnSO 4 in the pores of the biochar. Meanwhile, the doping of Mn not only introduces additional oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs), but also modulates the π electron density. Furthermore, Response surface method (RSM) analysis reveals that Mn-BC dosage has the most significant effect on BH removal, followed by BH concentration and pH value. Kinetic and isothermal studies reveal that the BH adsorption process of Mn-BC was mainly dominated by chemical and monolayer adsorption. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the contribution of Mn doping to the conjugation effect in the adsorption system. Originally proposed Mn-BC is one potentially propitious material to eliminate BH from wastewater, meanwhile this also provides a newfangled conception over the sustainable utilization of tea waste resources.

Mn-doped perovskites have been extensively studied in optics, magnetism, and electronics due to their orange emission. However, successful Mn doping required a high Mn/Pb feed ratio. In this paper, Mn-doped CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) with bright orange emission were prepared by a two-step slow thermal injection synthesis. The slow injection of precursors effectively slow-down the crystal growth kinetic process and controls the growth of undoped CsPbBr3 NPLs. This process also significantly improves Mn doping efficiency. Mn doping induced the generation of numerous precursor clusters during the growth of CsPbBr3 NPLs, and the formation of these clusters was crucial for enhancing the doping efficiency. The maximum amount of Mn precursor in CsPb0.83Mn0.17Br3 was 50% of Pb precursors. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of CsPb0.94Mn0.06Br3 NPLs reached up to 80.6%, which was 3.1 times of that of CsPbBr3 NPLs. The PL properties of Mn-doped CsPbBr3 NPLs were significantly enhanced compared with pure CsPbBr3 NPLs. The growth process and luminescence mechanism of Mn-doped CsPbBr3 NPLs were discussed. High PLQYs and efficient Mn doping supplied an ideal approach for the preparation of various CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) NCs for commercial applications.

Aqueous supercapacitors have occupied a significant position among various types of stationary energy storage equipment, while their widespread application is hindered by the relatively low energy density. Herein, N/F co-doped carbon materials activated by manganese clusters (NCM) are constructed by the straightforward experimental routine. Benefiting from the elevated conductivity structure at the microscopic level, the optimized NCM-0.5 electrodes exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance of 653 F g−1at 0.4 A g−1and exceptional cycling stability (97.39% capacity retention even after 40,000 cycles at the scanning rate of 100 mV s−1) in a neutral 5 M LiCl electrolyte. Moreover, we assembled an asymmetric device pairing with a VOxanode (NCM-0.5//VOx), which delivered a durable life span of 95% capacity retention over 30,000 cycles and an impressive energy density of 77.9 Wh kg−1. This study provides inspiration for transition metal element doping engineering in high-energy storage equipment.

Real-time monitoring of structural health status is very important for supersonic aircraft, since the long-term operation in harsh service environments, such as high temperatures, can cause potential damage. Structural health monitoring (SHM) based on lamb wave has been approved to be a critical technique for the reliable operation of supersonic aircraft , but is limited by the operating temperature of conventional piezoelectric sensors , which makes it difficult to meet the high-temperature monitoring requirements. The BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties and high Curie temperature ( T c ), making them promising for high-temperature SHM of supersonic aircraft. Here, we fabricated a piezoelectric sensor using 0.67BiFeO 3 -0.33BaTiO 3 -0.25%molMnO 2 (BF33BTMN-025) ceramic, which exhibits a piezoelectric charge constant ( d 33 ) of 135 pC/N at room temperature and a T c of 448 °C. The BF33BTMN-025 ceramic sensor operates effectively at temperatures up to 200 °C and maintains stable damage monitoring sensitivity as well. Compared with Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 (PZT), BaTiO 3 (BTO) and other piezoelectric sensors commonly used in SHM field, the BF33BTMN-025 ceramic sensor has a higher operating temperature and a comparable sensitivity. Our work demonstrates that the BF33BTMN-025 ceramic sensor can be employed as piezoelectric sensor for high-temperature SHM, which has a wide application potential in the field of real-time monitoring of supersonic aircraft.

For green hydrogen, the exploitation of advanced electrocatalysts is crucial, and transition metal phosphides have great potential in water splitting due to their abundant reserves and optimized electronic structure. Herein, a synergistic approach involving Mn doping and phosphorization is applied to CoFe-layered double hydroxide nanoflowers to produce a series of bifunctional catalysts Mn-doped CoFeP (Mn-CoFeP). Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate that the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of Mn(10%)-CoFeP both have notable improvement in 1 M KOH, with the overpotentials of only 160 and 239 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. Comparative electrocatalytic analysis indicates that moderate Mn doping mainly contributes to improve the OER performance, while the phosphorization significantly enhances the HER activity, resulting in effective bifunctional catalysis. For overall water decomposition, a total hydrolysis electrolysis cell equipped with the Mn(10%)-CoFeP bifunctional catalyst requires only 1.64 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it performs stable operation for 10 h at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a current maintenance rate of 83.6%. This work offers new insights into preparing effective bifunctional electrocatalysts, advancing clean energy development.

In the field of research on renewable energy conversion and storage methods, the development of catalysts with excellent properties and outstanding stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) acting at various pH values has become a much-anticipated research focus. RuO 2 as a benchmark OER catalyst, its wide application has always been limited by slow reaction kinetics and limited persistence. In this paper, Mn-doped RuO 2 material was developed and the optimum doping ratio was identified for using as an OER electrocatalyst under general purpose pH media. Mn 0.1 Ru 0.9 O 2 exhibited a lower overpotential value of 224 mV in acidic environment with a Tafel slope value of 51.62 mV dec −1 . Moreover, in alkaline and neutral environments, overpotentials of 231 mV and 376 mV were required to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. In addition, through continuous stability testing over 24 h in alkaline, acidic and neutral solutions, it has been further demonstrated that the Mn-doped RuO 2 material exhibits extremely high stability. The advancements in this research offer crucial insight into the rational development of efficient and durable RuO 2 -based catalysts.

Transition metal (oxy)hydroxides are potential oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts; however, simultaneously modulating multiple factors to enhance their performance is a grand challenge. Here, we report an incorporating heteroatom strategy via one-step hydrothermal approach to adjust more than one factor of Mn-doped NiFe (oxy)hydroxide (Mn-NiFeOOH/LDH) heterojunction . Mn doping regulates heterojunction morphology (reducing nanoparticles and becoming thinner and denser nanosheets), Ni/Fe ratio and valence states (Ni 2+ , Ni 3+ , and Ni 3+Δ ) of Ni ions. The former could effectively increase surface active sites, and the latter two reduce the content of Fe in the Mn x -NiFeOOH/LDH heterojunction, enabling more Ni 2+ convert to Ni 3+/3+Δ that have higher intrinsic OER activity. As a result, the first-rank Mn-NiFeOOH/LDH with ultra-low overpotential of 185 mV@20 mA cm −2 and 296 mV@500 mA cm −2 , and the improved OER performance are outdo to those of commercial RuO 2 catalyst for OER. Moreover, the Mn-NiFeOOH/LDH affords the earliest initial potential (1.392 V vs. RHE), corresponds to a recorded low overpotential (162 mV). Based on the density functional theory (DFT), Mn dopants can alter intermediate adsorption energy and effectively decrease *OOH’s energy barrier. This research exhibits a feasible strategy to design low cost electrocatalysts and provide new possibilities for future industrialization.

Thallium(III) (Tl(III)) is mobile in acidic environments and under ligand complexation, posing a potential threat to the environment and human health. The adsorption of Tl(III) on manganese and iron (hydr)oxides will affect its environmental mobility and engineering removal efficiency. However, the adsorption behavior and interfacial reaction mechanism of Tl(III) remain largely unknown. This study is the first to elucidate the surface complexation mechanism of Tl(III) on Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and to investigate the adsorption behavior of Tl(III) under the influence of typical environmental ligands. Deprotonation of surface hydroxyl groups contributes to the increase in adsorption capacity for Tl(III) (δ-MnO 2 , 1619.93 mg g −1 ; α-FeOOH, 48.25 mg g −1 ; and α-Fe 2 O 3 , 58.66 mg g −1 from Langmuir thermodynamic fitting). Surface complexation modeling reveals tridentate complexation of Tl(III) on birnessite and monodentate complexation on iron (hydr)oxides. The anionic ligand strongly inhibits the adsorption of Tl(III) (up to 16.0 %–40.0 %) by complexing with Tl(III) and occupying the adsorption sites. In addition, HA also reduces the adsorption of Tl(III) by 8.2 %–23.2 % by exacerbating the aggregation and surface coating of the adsorbent particles. New insights into the binding mechanism of Tl(III) on Fe/Mn oxides can help to guide the development of efficient Tl(III) removal adsorbents.

How to develop antitumor nanodrugs with low toxicity and a good curative effect is an urgent problem in the current biomedicine field. In this work, different proposed composites were simulated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) and COMSOL, including the material element, refractive index, particle size, and shape. Also, different machine learning algorithms are utilized to predict the absorbance at the near-infrared laser of 980 nm of different materials. Through train, validation, and test, the prediction of the as-synthesized Pt–Mn has high absorbance. Then, inorganic Pt–Mn was coated with PEI in order to improve their biocompatibility. Pt–Mn nanoparticles can generate ROS under the single 980 nm laser irradiation as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent and as a photothermal therapy (PTT) agent to heat the cells with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 23.6%. In addition, the electrochemical and in vitro chemodynamic therapy (CDT) experiments prove that Pt–Mn nanozymes could mimic the activity of peroxidase and enhance the Fenton reaction, thereby catalyzing excess H2O2 to produce hydroxyl free radicals and illustrating the potential to induce tumor cell apoptosis as the CDT agent in a weakly acidic tumor environment to complete high-efficiency chemokinetic therapy. Finally, Pt–Mn–PEI nanoparticles were used for PDT/PTT/CDT and the immune checkpoint inhibitor of anti-PD-L1 is injected in order to obtain the assistant immunotherapy, providing a potential choice to anticancer through effective synergistic cancer therapies.
