SUMMARY Li-O 2 battery has attracted much attention due to its ultra-high theoretical energy density in the field of electrochemical energy storage. The introduction of efficient electrocatalyst can effectively accelerate the reaction rate of ORR and OER, so as to improve the coulomb efficiency and poor cycle stability of Li-O 2 battery. In this work, a novel hollow N-doped carbon sphere is prepared by using MOF and polystyrene as template, and act as highly efficient oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries. The hollow structure can provide enough oxygen diffusion channel, deposition and decomposition space for reduction products. N doping into the hollow carbon structure can increase the charge density of adjacent carbon atoms and enhance its catalytic activity of ORR/OER. As a result, the Li-O 2 battery using the hollow N-doped carbon sphere as air cathode exhibited an high specific capacity of 18 762 mAh/g (at a current density of 500 mA/g) and remarkable cycling stability of 212 cycles (at a current density of 500 mA/g and limited capacity of 1000 mAh/g), outperforming the carbon material with common structure. This work highlights the importance of air cathode structure and efficient catalyst, provides a new idea for the design of air cathode of Li-O 2 battery, and expands the scope of future research.

Perovskite oxides with low cost and high catalytic activity are reported as suitable cathode catalysts for the Li–O 2 batteries (LOBs), while their catalytic mechanism is not yet fully clarified. Herein, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (LSCN8282) perovskite oxide is used as a cathode catalyst for the LOBs and further improved by adjusting the Co/Ni ratio in the B-site. Thus, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.6 Ni 0.4 O 3-δ (LSCN8264) and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.4 Ni 0.6 O 3-δ (LSCN8246) are also synthesized and used as cathode catalysts for the LOBs. Among the obtained perovskite catalysts in this study, LSCN8264 shows the highest electrochemical activity in 1 M KOH and best catalytic effectivity when used in the LOBs. The catalytic mechanism and doping optimization are clarified by analyzing the morphology of the discharge products and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the perovskite oxides.

Rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries have captured increasing attention owing to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, this promising system is confronted with the large overpotential, limited discharge capacity and low cyclic life. Herein, three two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum-based compounds of MoN, MoO 3 and MoS 2 are used as cathode catalysts in Li-O 2 batteries . The catalytic performance and electronic structures of these catalysts are compared comprehensively. Electrochemical test results reveal the superior battery performance of MoN cathodes, which deliver the highest specific discharge capacity of approximately 7400 mAh g − 1 and the lowest discharge/charge overpotential of 0.19/0.72 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the metallic property of MoN whereas MoO 3 and MoS 2 are poor conductive. Besides, interface properties between MoN and Li 2 O 2 products as well as reaction pathways of the Li-O 2 battery with MoN cathode are also investigated detailedly by DFT calculations, explaining the excellent catalytic properties of MoN at the atomic level. The present work provides intrinsic insights into designing high-performance cathode catalysts for Li-O 2 batteries with fine-tuned morphology and electronic characteristics.

In this work, we fabricated a novel free-standing Fe doped CoP nanowire on carbon cloth (Fe–CoP/CC) electrode with high catalytic activity for Li–O 2 batteries. It is unexpected that the Li–O 2 battery with Fe–CoP/CC electrode demonstrated a low potential of 0.8 V and exceptional cycle stability of more than 500 cycles with no significant voltage attenuation compared with previously reported counterparts. Such excellent performance can be partly attributed to its fine nanowire structure and its large specific surface area (419.14 m 2 g −1 ). Furthermore, iron doping plays a crucial role in improvement of battery performance because the doped Fe can modulate the internal electronic structure and optimize the absorption of intermediate products, which have been proved to be the determinant for optimizing the catalytic activity. Thus, it is believed that heterogeneous element doping in binary or ternary metal compounds is a promising strategy to fabricate high performance oxygen electrode materials for Li–O 2 batteries in the next few years.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted great attention as an alternative tumor treatment method. Unfortunately, it suffers from some limitations like poor targeting capability and insufficient therapeutic efficiency caused by tumor hypoxia. In this work, we introduce a novel O2-evolving PDT nanoparticle for homologous cancer cell targeting as well as dual-mode imaging [i.e., magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence imaging]. Specifically, the nanostructure consists of a MnO2 nanosheet-coated metal–organic framework core and cancer cell membrane shell (defined as CM-MMNPs). The MnO2 layer displays H+ and H2O2 responsiveness, which can produce O2 to enhance O2-mediated singlet oxygen (1O2) generation for PDT. Moreover, the resulted Mn2+ can also be used as an optimal MRI contrast agent. The introduction of cell membrane and membrane proteins endow the CM-MMNPs with good stability and integrity in the process of cellular endocytosis, as well as strong homologous cell-targeting ability. This multifunctional nanoparticle has the potential to overcome the hypoxia of cancer cells in PDT, and provides a new paradigm for tumor targeting, detection, and therapy, which is promising for biomedical applications in the future.

The Na–O2 battery system is attracting increasing attention due to its superiority in specific capacity and cost. However, its practical implementation is hindered by many issues, such as high charge–discharge overpotential, limited cycling life, and poor reversibility, all of which result from the mediocre O2 electrode. Herein, to surmount these critical challenges, hierarchical Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 nanocubes (h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns) with a yolk–shell structure are designed for the first time as the novel O2 electrode. h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns are synthesized from a metal–organic framework via a template-assisted method, which is demonstrated to be helpful in creating a high specific surface area of 130.4 m2 g−1, a hierarchical macro- and mesoporous structure, and synergistic yolk-shelled Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 active sites. These unique structural properties endow h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns with remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards both the ORR and OER. The Na–O2 battery based on h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns displays an ultrahigh initial discharge capacity of 8400 mA h g−1, ultralow charge–discharge overpotential of 0.45 V, long cycling life of 135 cycles, and excellent rate capability.

In this study, Fe/Cu bimetal composite was prepared by high-energy ball milling (BM) method for the removal of refractory organics. The BM Fe/Cu bimetal was characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS. Evenly distributed Fe and Cu was observed in the EDS mapping. In contrasting experiments, the removal rate of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by BM Fe/Cu materials was about 10-fold faster than that by chemical substitution deposition (CSD) of Fe/Cu material. Complete 4-CP removal and 66.7% of total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization in the BM Fe/Cu–O 2 system were achieved. Dissolved oxygen plays a crucial role for 4-CP degradation through the in situ generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as H 2 O 2 , ·OH, and via oxygen activation reactions. The predominant reactive radicals were identified to be and ·OH through ESR technique and inhibition experiments. The coexistence of oxidation and reduction of 4-CP in the BM Fe/Cu-O 2 system was proposed. Practitioner points 4-CP removal rate by BM Fe/Cu is 10-fold faster than that by CSD Fe/Cu at the same conditions. Complete 4-CP removal and 66.7% of TOC reduction were achieved. All three ROS including ·OH, , and H 2 O 2 coexisted in the BM Fe/Cu-O 2 system. A harmonious coexistence of oxidation and reduction mechanism was proposed.

The design of a nanoporous cathode for Li–O2 batteries that can achieve high chemical stability and superior electrochemical performance remains a formidable challenge. A novel approach for the fabrication of nanoengineered PdNi alloys directly coated onto Ni nonwoven fabric (PdNi/NiNF) obtained through electrospinning has been proposed. On the basis of the contributions of the porous structure, the prepared metal-based cathodes can exhibit high chemical and mechanical stabilities, high catalytic activity, and high conductivity. In this design, the major side reactions were excluded when compared with popularly used carbon cathodes, and excellent cycling stability (266 cycles) could be achieved. The proposed cathode exhibited a high discharge capacity of 15 700 mA h g−1 at 500 mA g−1, which was 5 times higher than those reported for carbon-free cathodes.

A lithium (Li)–oxygen (O 2 ) battery based on an inorganic solid-state air cathode was fabricated, and the influence of water vapor (key component in the air) on the electrochemical behavior of the proposed Li–O 2 battery was deeply investigated. Excluding the negative influence of the corrosion of Li anode that existed in organic-based electrolyte Li–O 2 battery when operated in wet environment, our results showed that water vapor has a positive effect on the discharge and cycling performances of the Li–O 2 battery using a solid-state air cathode. The discharge capacity reached 11734 mA h g −1 (7.8 mA h cm −2 ) in wet O 2 , which was not markedly different with that in dry O 2 (11956 mA h g −1 (8.0 mA h cm −2 )). However, the discharge voltage in wet O 2 was about 110 mV higher than that in dry O 2 . Although the formation of LiOH increased the charge overpotential, the formed LiOH in turn minimized the decomposition of carbon to form Li 2 CO 3 , and enhanced the cycling performance to a certain extent. In addition, we showed that the polarization involved by water vapor could also be largely decreased by slightly increasing the operating temperature; the charge voltage plateau decreased from 4.04 to 3.3 V when the temperature increased from 25 to 50 °C. These results suggest that the Li–O 2 battery using a solid-state air cathode is promising for practical application, especially in wet environment.

Among all the factors that restrict the application of Li–air battery, large charging polarization, due to the poor bulk charge transport ability of discharge product Li 2 O 2 , comes first. In this paper, we adopt the method of controlling discharging temperature to reduce the charging polarization during the first cycle of Li 2 O 2 based on the fact that controlling discharging temperature can reduce Li 2 O 2 bulk charge transport path since finer Li 2 O 2 particles can be observed at higher temperature. The mechanism of reducing charging polarization simply through increasing the discharging test temperature has also been researched in this paper.

Promotion of nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) by incorporation of ferric oxide (NG-Fe 2 O 3 ) is found to strongly enhance the activity in the catalytic oxidization of aldehyde to synthesize carboxylic acid with O 2 . The composite NG-Fe 2 O 3 catalysts can be fabricated by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The characterization results of the composite catalysts have revealed that the Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes of 40–90 nm are not only on both sides of NG sheets but also tightly enwrapped by the graphene layers. In comparison to NG and Fe 2 O 3 NPs, synergistic adsorption that confirmed by DFT studies has been created on the NG-Fe 2 O 3 composites, where both NG and Fe 2 O 3 are proposed to be involved in the adsorptive interaction. The synergistic adsorption can lead to strengthen O 2 molecule adsorption of NG and weaken O 2 molecule adsorption of Fe 2 O 3 NPs. More importantly, the NG-Fe 2 O 3 composite is found to considerably facilitate the longest elongation of O-O bonds and contribute to the striking enhancement of the catalytic performance. The highly active NG-Fe 2 O 3 composite shows wide scope for catalysis of oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids and good stability for recycle six times.

The selective two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for an onsite Fenton oxidation reaction over an integrated cathode is a promising method for environmental restoration. Here, an economic iron-copper-embedded carbon aerogel (FeCuC) exhibited high ORR activity (half-wave potential of −0.19 V vs SCE). The electron transfer number (n) over FeCuC was 2.9. Indeed, Fe@Fe 3 C promoted the ORR activity, while Cu enhanced the selectivity of the two-electron ORR. Meanwhile, the simultaneous incorporation of Fe and Cu simultaneously facilitated the sequential Fenton oxidation induced by H 2 O 2 . The individual rate constants for ORR and the oxidation reaction successfully revealed the fact that the efficient Fenton oxidation reaction again promotes again the 2-electron O 2 reduction pathway. The application of FeCuC as a cathode in the electro-Fenton (EF) process, involving both high ORR and high Fenton oxidation activities, exhibited efficient total organic carbon (TOC) removal (88–99%) in 240 min for dimethyl phthalate (DMP), imidacloprid (IMI), bisphenol A (BPA) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA). Moreover, five types of sanitary sewage were successively treated to meet the national discharge standards (chemical oxygen demand (COD) < 50 mg L −1 ) with relatively low specific energy consumption (20–40 kW·h·(kg COD ) −1 ) using FeCuC in the heterogeneous EF process.
