Presence, distribution and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rice-wheat continuous cropping soils close to five industrial parks of Suzhou, China

Yong Li,Ling Long,Jing Ge,Li-xuan Yang,Jin-jin Cheng,Ling-xiang Sun,Changying Lu,Xiang-yang Yu

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulated in agricultural soils are likely to threaten human health and ecosystem though the food chain, therefore, it is worth to pay more attention to soil contamination by PAHs. In this study, the presence, distribution and risk assessment of 16 priority PAHs in rice-wheat continuous cropping soils close to industrial parks of Suzhou were firstly investigated. The concentrations of the total PAHs ranged from 125.99 ng/g to 796.65 ng/g with an average of 352.94 ng/g. Phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLT), benzo [a] anthracene (BaA) and pyrene (PYR) were the major PAHs in those soil samples. The highest level of PAHs was detected in the soils around Chemical plant and Steelworks, followed by Printed wire board, Electroplate Factory and Paper mill. The composition of PAHs in the soils around Chemical plant was dominated by 3-ring PAHs, however, the predominant compounds were 4, 5-ring PAHs in the soils around other four factories. Meanwhile, the concentration of the total PAHs in the soils close to the factories showed a higher level of PAHs in November (during rice harvest) than that in June (during wheat harvest). Different with other rings of PAHs, 3-ring PAHs in the soils around Chemical plant and Steelworks had a higher concentration in June. The results of principal component analysis and isomeric ratio analysis suggested that PAHs in the studied areas mainly originated from biomass, coal and petroleum combustion. The risk assessment indicated that higher carcinogenic risk was found in those sites closer to the industrial park.

The mechanisms by which phenanthrene affects the photosynthetic apparatus of cucumber leaves

Liqiao Jin,Xingkai Che,Zishan Zhang,Yuting Li,Huiyuan Gao,Shijie Zhao

Phenanthrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is widely distributed in the environment and seriously affects the growth and development of plants. To clarify the mechanisms of the direct effects of phenanthrene on the plant photosynthetic apparatus, we measured short-term phenanthrene-treated cucumber leaves. Phenanthrene inhibited Rubisco carboxylation activity, decreasing photosynthesis rates (Pn). And phenanthrene inhibited photosystem II (PSII) activity, thereby blocking photosynthetic electron transport. The inhibition of the light and dark reactions decreased the photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR) and increased the excitation pressure (1−qP). Under high light, the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F v /F m ) in phenanthrene-treated cucumber leaves decreased significantly, but photosystem I (PSI) activity (Δ I/I o ) did not. Phenanthrene also caused a J-point rise in the OJIP curve under high light, which indicated that the acceptor side of PSII Q A to Q B electron transfer was restricted. This was primarily due to the net degradation of D1 protein, which is caused by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in phenanthrene-treated cucumber leaves under high light. This study demonstrated that phenanthrene could directly inhibit photosynthetic electron transport and Rubisco carboxylation activity to decrease net Pn. Under high light, phenanthrene caused the accumulation of ROS, resulting in net increases in D1 protein degradation and consequently causing PSII photoinhibition .

Biodegradation of phenanthrene by Rhizobium petrolearium SL‐1

Huang X.,Shi J.,Cui C.,Yin H.,Zhang R.,Ma X.,Zhang X.

AimsWe aimed to investigate the phenanthrene degradation characteristics and possible phenanthrene degradation pathways of Rhizobium petrolearium SL‐1.Methods and ResultsUsing high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV‐visible and gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) analysis, the phenanthrene‐degrading properties and metabolites of Rh. petrolearium SL‐1 were analysed, and then combined with genome‐based analysis to elucidate the possible biodegradation pathway of phenanthrene in Rh. petrolearium SL‐1. The results of the analyses showed that phenanthrene (100 mg l−1) was completely degraded by strain SL‐1 at 35°C, 0·02% salinity and pH 9·0 within 3 days. A wide range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including naphthalene, fluorene, anthracene and pyrene, could also be degraded by this strain.ConclusionsBased on the identified metabolites, the utilization of probable intermediates and the presence of putative phenanthrene catabolic genes, we concluded that phenanthrene was degraded via two different routes, namely the ‘naphthalene’ and the ‘phthalic acid’ routes.Significance and Impact of the StudyFor the first time, this study shows the degradation pathway of phenanthrene by a Rhizobium strain. Because of its excellent stress resistance, metabolic versatility, high degradation efficiency and potential application in phytoremediation, Rh. petrolearium SL‐1 is a potential candidate for the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons‐contaminated areas.

Multifaceted effects of HZSM-5 (Proton-exchanged Zeolite Socony Mobil-5) on catalytic cracking of pinewood pyrolysis vapor in a two-stage fixed bed reactor

Yimeng Wang,Jie Wang

The pinewood was pyrolyzed in the first reactor at a heating rate of 10   °C   min −1 from room temperature to 700   °C, and the vapor was allowed to be cracked through the second reactor in a temperature range of 450–750   °C without and with HZSM-5. Attempts were made to determine a wide spectrum of gaseous and liquid products, as well as the mass and element partitions to gas, water, bio-oil, coke and char. HZSM-5 showed a preferential deoxygenation effect via the facilitated decarbonylation and decarboxylation with the inhibited dehydration at 550–600   °C. This catalyst also displayed a high selectivity for the formations of aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins by the promoted hydrogen transfer to these products at 550–600   °C. The bio-oil produced with HZSM-5 at 500–600   °C had the yields of 14.5–16.8%, the high heat values of 39.1–42.4   MJ   kg −1 , and the energy recoveries of 33–35% (all dry biomass basis).

A solid-phase microextraction coating of sol–gel-derived perhydroxy cucurbit[6]uril and its application on to the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon

Nan Dong,Tao Li,Yujie Luo,Lin Shao,Zhu Tao,Chun Zhu

A novel solid-phase microextraction coating that contains perhydroxy cucurbit[6]uril((OH) 12 Q[6]) was prepared by a sol–gel method. (OH) 12 Q[6] was used as a starting coating material with hydroxy-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (OH-PDMS) to bond chemically to a fused-silica substrate using 3-(2-cyclooxypropoxyl)propyltrimethoxysilane as cross-linking agent; hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions then led to the formation of a (OH) 12 Q[6]/PDMS-coating. The coating has a high thermal stability (360   °C), long lifetime and can withstand organic and inorganic solvent rinsing because of the chemical binding between the coating and silica substrate. Its performance was tested by headspace (HS) solid-phase microextraction fiber coupled with gas chromatography to determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) compounds in water samples. The (OH) 12 Q[6]/PDMS-coated fiber exhibited higher enrichment factors from fourfold for naphthalene to tenfold for pyrene compared with commercial PDMS fiber, and the enrichment factors increased with the number of condensed PAH rings. The strong adsorption affinity is believed to be attributed to hydrogen bonding and C H⋯π interactions between PAHs and (OH) 12 Q[6], according to the results of quantum chemical calculations. In the PAH analysis, the (OH) 12 Q[6]-coated fiber showed a good repeatability (<   4.7%) and reproducibility between fibers (<   9.4%), low detection limits (0.03–0.15   μg   L −1 ), and a wide linearity (0.1–1000   μg   L −1 ) under optimized conditions. This method was used for the simultaneous determination of seven PAHs with satisfactory recoveries of 90.56%–107.4% for Huaxi river water samples and 90.23%–109.5% for local wastewater samples, respectively.

A simple method for the synthesis of a polar-embedded and polar-endcapped reversed-phase chromatographic packing with low activity of residue silanols

Hai-yan Liu,Zhi-yong Li,Dan Liu,Ying-Wen Xue,Zhi-guo Shi

Octadecyl bonded silica (ODS) is the most popular packing for reversed-phase chromatography. However, it generally demonstrates bad resolution for polar analytes because of the residue silanols and its poor stability in aqueous mobile phase. To address the problem, a new reversed-phase packing containing both polar-embedded and polar-endcapped moieties was proposed. It was prepared by a very simple method, in which the epoxide addition reaction of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane with 1-octadecanethiol proceeded simultaneously with the reaction of silane coupling onto silica particles. By controlling the molecular ratio of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane to 1-octadecanethiol higher than 1.0 (1.56 for the present study), both polar-embedded and polar-endcapped moieties were achieved onto the packing. The performance of the packing was evaluated in detail. The results demonstrated that neutral, acidic and basic analytes were well separated on the packing. The column efficiency for phenanthrene was 34,200 theoretical plates per meter. In addition, four nucleotides can be separated in 100% phosphate buffered saline solution with good reproducibility, which indicates the packing has good stability in aqueous mobile phase. Amitriptyline, a typical basic analytes, was eluted out with relatively symmetric peak shape (asymmetry factor of 1.36), which implies that the packing has not suffered from the negative effect of residue silanols significantly. Good stability in buffer solution of pH ranging from 2.0 to 10.0 was also documented for the packing.

High efficiency degradation of alkanes and crude oil by a salt-tolerant bacterium Dietzia species CN-3

Weiwei Chen,Junde Li,Xiangnan Sun,Jun Min,Xiaoke Hu

A bacterial strain , CN-3, was isolated from petroleum-contaminated sediment in Bohai Bay, China. Morphological, physiological and phylogenetic analyses indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Dietzia . It was capable of utilizing a wide range of alkanes (C 14 –C 31 ), aromatic compounds and crude oil as the sole carbon and energy sources. The bacterium showed high degradation rate (>80%) of the saturated hydrocarbons of crude oil in the pH range of 6–9. The degradation rate was hardly affected at a NaCl concentration up to 85 g L −1 , indicating that the strain can tolerate high salinities . The real-time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results showed that the CYP153 genes could be significantly induced by C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 26 and pristane, whereas the transcription level of alk B gene was increased moderately with C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 26 and pristane induction condition. A high degradation extent, wide substrate range and facile conditions enhanced the potential for this bacterial strain to be used in the bioremediation of crude oil pollution.

Dicationic polymeric ionic-liquid-based magnetic material as an adsorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organophosphate pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Qiong Jiang,Qin Liu,Qiliang Chen,Wenjie Zhao,Guoqiang Xiang,Lijun He,Xiuming Jiang,Shusheng Zhang

Magnetic particles modified with a dicationic polymeric ionic liquid are described as a new adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction. They were obtained through the copolymerization of a 1,8-di(3-vinylimidazolium)octane-based ionic liquid with vinyl-modified SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 , and were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The modified magnetic particles are effective in the extraction of organophosphate pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Also, they can provide different extraction performance for the selected analytes including fenitrothion, parathion, fenthion, phoxim, phenanthrene, and fluoranthene, where the extraction efficiency is found to be in agreement with the hydrophobicity of analytes. Various factors influencing the extraction efficiency, such as, the amount of adsorbent, extraction, and desorption time, and type and volume of the desorption solvent, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a good linearity ranging from 1–100 μg/L is obtained for all analytes, except for parathion (2–200 μg/L), where the correlation coefficients varied from 0.9960 to 0.9998. The limits of detection are 0.2–0.8 μg/L, and intraday and interday relative standard deviations are 1.7–7.4% ( n = 5) and 3.8–8.0% ( n = 3), respectively. The magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography can be applied for the detection of trace targets in real water samples with satisfactory relative recoveries and relative standard deviations.

Removal of phenanthrene from coastal waters by green tide algae Ulva prolifera

Cui Zhang,Jian Lu,Jun Wu,Yongming Luo

Ulva prolifera ( U. prolifera ) has been frequently involved in terrible algal proliferation in coastal areas. Although it is known to be associated with green tide, its contribution to the natural attenuation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater has not been evaluated. In this study, the removal of phenanthrene using U. prolifera collected from coastal water with green tide blooming was investigated. The results showed that phenanthrene could be removed efficiently in the presence of both the live and heat-killed U. prolifera . The phenanthrene concentrations of the live algae treatment decreased smoothly from 10.00 to 0.80   μg   L −   1 through the whole process, while those of the heat-killed algae treatment decreased sharply from 10.0 to 2.71   μg   L −   1 in one day and kept constantly after that. The in situ monitoring and visualizing using laser confocal scanning microscopy (LCSM) confirmed the accumulation of phenanthrene in U. prolifera . The increase in nutrient and temperature led to the increase of phenanthrene removal rate, while the salinity had less influence on the removal of phenanthrene. The removal efficiency by U. prolifera had a good linear relationship with phenanthrene initial concentration (r 2   =   0.999) even at 100   μg   L −   1 which was higher than its environmentally relevant concentrations. High removal efficiency (91.3%) was observed when the initial phenanthrene concentration was set at environmental relevant concentration (5   μg   L −   1 ). Results of this study demonstrate a potential new natural attenuation process for typical PAHs in coastal water during the outbreak of green tide. These findings indicate that the outbreak of harmful green tide algae may bring positive environmental benefits in the terms of the removal of harmful organic pollutants from coastal waters.

Heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene catalyzed by schwertmannite biosynthesized using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

Xiaoqing Meng,Su Yan,Wenzhu Wu,Guanyu Zheng,Lixiang Zhou

Heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene in aqueous solution was investigated using schwertmannite biosynthesized by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans LX5 as a catalyst. The effects of different reaction parameters including catalyst loading, H2O2 concentration, initial solution pH and inorganic anions on the Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene were studied. Results showed that the biosynthesized schwertmannite had an effective catalytic ability on phenanthrene degradation. The degradation efficiency of phenanthrene was 99.0% within 3–5 h reaction under conditions of H2O2 200 mg L−1, schwertmannite 1 g L−1, phenanthrene 1 mg L−1 and pH 3.0–4.5. The degradation was mainly via a surface mechanism, in which phenanthrene was readily adsorbed on the surface of schwertmannite and then oxidized by ˙OH produced from H2O2 decomposition. The XPS results of schwertmannite before and after Fenton-like degradation of phenanthrene revealed the change of Fe2+/Fe3+ species on the surface of schwertmannite. Moreover, phthalates, octadecanoic acid and 9,10-phenanthraquinone were identified by GC-MS analyses as the main intermediate compounds during phenanthrene degradation, and all the intermediates were finally mineralized. The repeated use of biosynthesized schwertmannite for phenanthrene degradation illustrated its stability and reusability as a Fenton-like catalyst. Therefore, schwertmannite biosynthesized using A. ferrooxidans is an excellent catalyst for the degradation of phenanthrene in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions.

Enhanced adsorbability and photocatalytic activity of TiO2-graphene composite for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal in aqueous phase

Hongzhen Bai,Jun Zhou,Hongjian Zhang,Guping Tang

Photodegradation via titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been used to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental media broadly. In this study, a series of TiO 2 -graphene composites (P25-GR) with different GR weight ratios were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide (GO) and P25. Their structures were characterized and the proprieties were tested in aqueous phase. Phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLAN), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) were selected as models of PAHs. The experiment indicated that P25-2.5%GR exhibited enhancement in both adsorption and photodegradation, ∼80% of PAHs were removed after 2   h photocatalysis. The influence of photodegradation rate was studied, including PAHs initial concentration and pH. Aromatic intermediates were identified during the reaction process and the degradation pathways were portrayed. This work explored the enhanced photocatalysis performance was attributed to the PAH-selective adsorbability and the strong electron transfer ability of the composite. The analysis of the degradation intermediates confirmed that the reaction proceeded with the formation of free radicals, leading to the gradual PAH mineralization.

Quantifying PAHs in water by three-way fluorescence spectra and second-order calibration methods

Ruifang Yang,Nanjing Zhao,Xue Xiao,Gaofang Yin,Shaohui Yu,Jianguo Liu,Wenqing Liu

It is still difficult to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accurately in natural water by fluorescence technique because of their low solubility, different fluorescent intensity, and the complex interferents from water environments. In this work, three-way fluorescence spectra combined with three methods including three-way parallel factor analysis, multi-way partial least square with residual bilinearization and unfolded partial least square with residual bilinearization were used to predict the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at the μg L−1 level in reservoir and river water, respectively. The prediction abilities of these methods on different analytes were evaluated by validation sets. The results demonstrate that unfolded partial least square with residual bilinearization yields the optimal results with relative error less than or equal to 6% for phenanthrene, pyrene, anthracene and fluorene, and 35% for acenaphthene and fluoranthene in different water backgrounds.
