Synthesis of Au/lignin–tannin particles and their anticancer application

Zhicheng Jiang,Jinjie Duan,Xingjie Guo,Ya Ma,Chunjiong Wang,Bi Shi

Gold (Au) nanoparticles are widely adopted as nonbiological-toxic and biocompatible biomaterials. In this study, Au nanoparticles supported on lignin–tannin (LT) micro-/nanoparticles were prepared via a green and novel method without the use of an additional reducing agent. Soluble lignin oligomers and tannin were first obtained from H2O–tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvothermal treatment of the corncob residue and bayberry bark, which are industrial and forestry wastes of biomass, respectively. With outstanding self-assembly capability, the lignin oligomers induced the co-self-assembly of tannins into LT particles considerably, which enhanced the density of ortho-phenolic hydroxyls on the hydrophilic shell. Consequently, Au3+ can be stabilized and subsequently reduced into Au0 particles that were highly dispersed on the LT particles. Upon increasing the proportion of tannins, the amount of Au species on LT particles and the Au0/Aun+ ratio increased, accompanied by the inferior thermal stability of the particles. In addition, the as-prepared Au/LT particles can be taken up by cells and can reduce the vitality of several cancer cells, indicating a potential biotherapy application.

Dynamic interfacial structure of au/CeO2 catalyst upon thermal activation

Hongpeng Liu,Zhongliang Cao,Siyuan Yang,Zejian Dong,Zi-An Li,Xing Chen,Langli Luo

The dynamic behavior of oxide-supported metal catalyst interfaces under thermal and gaseous activation critically determines their catalytic performance. Using in situ TEM, we reveal the atomic-scale evolution of Au nanoparticles on CeO 2 supports during thermal treatment. The Au/CeO 2 interface structure depends on three key factors: epitaxial matching, nanoparticle morphology, and metal-support interactions, all governed by the balance between Au surface energy, cohesive energy, and interfacial energy with CeO 2 . Thermal activation induces significant structural reorganization in Au nanoparticles, exhibiting size- and support-dependent facet reorientation that follows temperature-driven wetting and sintering trends. These transformations are facilitated by crystalline defects (e.g., twin boundaries and dislocations) that reduce the energy barrier for atomic rearrangement.

Urchin-like Au/Pd Nanobranches for the Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Qiuxiang Wang,Junlin Cai,Yu Sun,Weizhen Chen,Hongpu Huang,Shupeng Wang,Luhong Fu,Shuifen Xie

Three-dimensional (3D) porous heterogeneous metallic nanomaterials hold remarkable competitiveness in electrocatalytic fields due to their flexible porous structure and the electronic effect between heteroatoms, but challenges in synthesis still remain. Here, we design a facile stepwise reduction method to successfully synthesize urchin-like Au/Pd nanobranches (NBs). In a one-pot synthesis, small Au nanoparticles were initially generated. Later, numerous Pd nanotwigs were epitaxially grown and interlaced on the Au seeds to create unique channels, forming an Au-core/Pd-branches structure eventually. The as-prepared Au/Pd NBs exhibit greatly improved activity and stability for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis compared to the commercial Pt/C, with mass activity (1.4 A mg–1) and specific activity (2.4 mA cm–2) increased by 8.8 and 8.9 times, respectively. The excellent ORR performances of Au/Pd NBs are mainly attributed to the optimized electronic structure, improved utilization of surface active sites, and accelerated mass and charge transfer, which derives from the strong ligand effect, as well as the abundant porous channels of the Au/Pd NBs structure. The controllable design and synthesis of 3D porous Pd-based nanomaterials sheds light on a gigantic potential for ORR electrocatalysis.

Au Nanocluster-Based Smart Multicolor Luminescent Hydrogels for Encryption Applications

You Yu,Xianghui Zhang,Minggan Wang,Jingyan Luan,Xinmeng Liu,Jinglin Shen,Wei Qi

The development of nanocluster (NC)-based luminescent functional materials has gained tremendous attention recently owing to their unique optical properties. Herein, we studied the coassembly behavior of AuNCs modified using 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PRT-AuNCs) with trimesic acid (TA). Microrods were formed through the coassembly, accompanied with enhanced photoluminescence emission. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking between TA and PRT ligands were verified to be the main driving forces for the formation of ordered aggregates and consequently the improvement of the luminescence of PRT-AuNCs. Furthermore, inspired by the outstanding optical properties of the PRT-AuNCs/TA complex, we prepared a luminescent nanocomposite hydrogel through loading the PRT-AuNCs/TA complex into κ-carrageenan networks. The obtained hydrogel showed strong luminescence, high strength, and self-healing properties. Moreover, by doping blue emission quantum dots (QDs), a type of multicolor hydrogel was obtained. The different pH-responsive behaviors of QDs and PRT-AuNCs render the multicolor hydrogel a candidate with potential applications in information encryption. This study proposes a new method for the development of AuNC-based nanomaterials through coassembly and provides a perspective for the potential usage of AuNCs as smart luminescent devices.

Melting and phase diagram of Au-Cu alloy at nanoscale

M.Z. Chu,C. Zhang,X.H. Liang,C.H. Hu,G.T. Ma,R.Y. Fang,Chengying Tang

The Au-Cu nanoalloys (NPs) were produced by NaBH 4 co-reduction from the mixture precursor solution of component Au and Cu, under the protection of sodium citrate stabilizer . The Au-Cu NPs encapsulated in SiO 2 , Au 5 Cu 5 @SiO 2 NPs, were then synthesized by the Stöber method based on the obtained Au-Cu NPs. The microstructure and particle sizes were characterized by TEM observation. The phase transition temperature of Au-Cu@SiO 2 was determined by DSC measurement. The surface tension, surface segregation and surface energy of Au-Cu NPs as a function of particle size and temperature were calculated by the theoretical model based on the thermodynamic properties of pure component of Au and Cu NPs, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters of Au-Cu system at various nanoscales were optimized on the basis of experimental and theoretical results in this work and previous results in literature. Based on the obtained the thermodynamic data set, the nano phase diagrams of the Au-Cu system at nanoscale were calculated, and the thermodynamic properties of Au-Cu nanometer system were obtained. The results show that the calculated results agree well with experimental work.

MnO2 coated Au nanoparticles advance SERS detection of cellular glutathione

Caiyin Wang,Yun Gao,Sen Hu,Anni Zhu,Ye Ying,Xiaoyu Guo,Yiping Wu,Ying Wen,Haifeng Yang

Glutathione , referred to as GSH, abnormal physiologic level of GSH is an indication to some neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. A measurement of cellular GSH calls for rapid, sensitive, and selective methods. In this work, we rationally design and prepare Au@MnO 2 core-shell composite nanoparticles combining with tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) molecules to determine intracellular GSH by Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. MnO 2 plays multifunctional roles in the method, including the participation in catalyzing TMB to molecules form dimer charge-transfer complex (CTC) which own a great SERS signal reporter. With the addition of GSH, the MnO 2 will be dissolving detaching CTC molecules from the surface of Au@MnO 2 and resulting in a signal-off off SERS response and indirect and sensitive detection of GSH could be realized. The limit of detection of GSH by SERS method is as low as 0.1 μmol/L and a good linear relationship of GSH is found in the range from 0.5 to 30 μmol/L. Au@MnO 2 -SERS assay is successfully applied to detect cellular GSH, which is validated by using Enzyme-linked-immunoassay-based Kit. The Au@MnO 2 -SERS protocol has promising potential for clinical application.

Rationally designed Au-ZrOx interaction for boosting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation

Yunlei Zhang,Yu Cao,Changhao Yan,Wenyun Liu,Yao Chen,Wen Guan,Fang Wang,Yiran Liu,Pengwei Huo

Upgrading bioderived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to high value-added bioplastic monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising route for biomass conversion. Developing an efficient supported metal catalyst and clarifying the structure–activity relationship between the support and active sites is the key to boost FDCA production. Herein, ZrO 2 coated on natural and abundant halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was synthesized and employed as a support for Au nanoparticles loading. The Au-ZrO x interface active sites were successfully engineered, and the active site amount can be rationally tailored by adjusting the crystal phases of ZrO 2 via changing calcination temperature. A combination study of catalysts surface physicochemical properties and catalytic activity reveals that oxygen vacancies (O v ) play a vital role in enhancing the adsorption of O 2 . Meanwhile, interface active sites facilitate the chemisorption and activation of O 2 molecules, which makes it easier to produce oxygen active species (superoxide radicals). More importantly, in-situ infrared spectroscopy and adsorption experiments also demonstrate that the catalyst with a higher O v concentration not only contributes to a stronger Lewis acid intensity, but also enhances the adsorption capacity of a key intermediate 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), thus leading to an acceleration of the rate-determining step of hydroxyl group oxidation. The highest 99.4 % of FDCA yield can be obtained in 3.0 h. This newly proposed model of interface active sites may shed a light on the design of novel heterogeneous catalysts for the related biomass oxidation reactions.

Graphene-Au nanosphere composite arrays and their enhanced SERS performance

Xiaoxu Zhang,Chengxu Song,Shilun Li,Liang Chen,Jing Xu,Wei Liu,Shangshen Feng

The effective regulation of the absorption properties of Au nanosphere arrays, as well as effective enhancement of its SERS performance, are of great significance for its applications in the field of optical sensing. In this paper, the polyol synthesis method was used to fabricate monolayer and bilayer periodic Au nanosphere arrays, onto which monolayer graphene was coated, and the optical properties of the obtained composite structures were investigated. The results showed that the coverage of graphene enhances the absorption peak intensities of the monolayer and bilayer Au nanoarrays by up to 32.92%, and the resonance peaks were red-shifted by up to 17 nm. The Raman signals of graphene-covered monolayer and bilayer Au nanosphere composite arrays are 180 and 280 times stronger than that of pristine graphene, due to the combination of chemical enhancement and electromagnetic enhancement. And the detection sensitivity of R6G molecules by graphene-bilayer Au nanosphere composite arrays is 10 −6  M. In addition, the staggered stacking of bilayer Au nanosphere arrays can provide more plasmonic hotspots, resulting in higher Raman intensity of the substrate. These results will pave the way for the fabrication of highly efficient SERS substrates by providing various promising candidates.

Au Nanocage/In2O3 Nanoparticle-Based Hybrid Structures for Formaldehyde Sensors

Jinyu Huang,Zichao Ma,Junda Li,Zhonglei Zhang,Jihua Tang,Xiangdong Cao,Wei Xu,Xiaojin Zhao,Yatao Yang,Xiaofang Pan,Yu Du

Detecting the trace ppb level of formaldehyde (HCHO) in indoor ambient and human exhaled breath using a metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor has attracted increasing attention. A hybrid nanostructure consisting of In2O3 nanoparticles grown on a Au nanocage (NC) surface was synthesized using a one-step solvothermal method, which was then used to be fabricated as HCHO sensors. The 0.5 wt % Au NC/In2O3 sensor featured an ultrahigh response of 8.8 for 1 ppm of HCHO at a low operating temperature (145 °C), which was nearly 2.5 times higher than that of the pure In2O3 sensor. Furthermore, it possessed outstanding selectivity and a low detection limit (25 ppb) toward HCHO. This excellent sensing property was possibly due to the increase in chemisorbed oxygens on its surface due to the Au NC spillover mechanism, an enhanced adsorption capability for HCHO because of the phase transition from cubic to rhombohedral In2O3, good gas diffusion, and a large surface area with a Au NC/In2O3 3D hierarchical structure, as well as the widened electron depletion layer derived from the Schottky barriers and homojunctions between the components of Au NC/In2O3.

A microfluidic platform for minute-scale synthesizing Au@Ag nanocubes

Fuqi Yao,Jiamiao Wang,Wei Zhang,Zhetao Wang,Yunfeng Li,Hao Sun,Qiang Chen,Pei Liang

Noble metal nanoparticles are enduring primarily because of their unique Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) properties, which make them exciting for medical testing, biosensing, and other applications. The LSPR properties of nanoparticles with different shapes and different structures vary. The sharp edges of the cubic structure enable stronger LSPR performance making it more versatile for diverse applications. However, the fast and stable controlled synthesis of cubes, an anisotropic nanoparticle, has been an obstacle for researchers. Microfluidics has a reaction space that matches the scale of the nanoparticles, and the efficient heat and mass transfer capability in the tiny confined space ensures that the synthesis reaction proceeds more efficiently and reliably. Herein, we designed a microfluidic platform for the controlled synthesis of Au@Ag nanocubes, which can synthesize core-shell nanocubes of uniform shape and size in 15 min. Moreover, both Raman probe methylene blue and antibiotic sulfadiazine were detected using this material as a substrate for SERS detection, obtaining satisfactory results (10 −10  M and 10 −7  M, separately).

Au Doping PtNi Nanodendrites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Shan Wang,Lifeng Ma,Dan Song,Shengchun Yang

To boost the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of Platinum (Pt), making binary PtM (M = transition metals, for example, Fe, Cu, and Ni) with specific morphology is known as a promising method. Although great progress has been made in the synthesis of shaped PtM catalysts toward MOR, enhancing the catalytic performance of the PtM to enable it to be commercialized is still a hotspot. In this work, the Au-doped PtNi dendritic nanoparticles (Au-PtNi DNPs) were obtained by doping a small amount of gold (Au) into initially prepared PtNi DNPs, greatly improving their MOR catalytic activity and durability. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping (EDXS) indicates that the surface of DNPs is mainly composed of Au dopant and PtNi, while the core is mainly Pt, indicating the formation of Au-doped PtNi/Pt core-shell-like DNP structures. The electrocatalytic performance of the prepared Au-PtNi DNPs with different compositions for the MOR was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and CO-stripping tests. The experimental findings indicate that the Au-PtNi DNPs showed better MOR performance in comparison with PtNi DNPs and commercial Pt catalysts. Among all the catalysts, 6% Au-PtNi DNPs showed 4.3 times improved mass catalytic activity for the MOR in comparison with commercial Pt catalysts. In addition, all the prepared Au-PtNi DNPs display a remarkable CO tolerance compared to that of PtNi DNPs and commercial Pt catalysts. The dendritic structure of Au-PtNi DNPs can effectively enhance catalytic performance, combined with the electronic effect of Au, Pt, and Ni.Keywords:Au dopant;nanodendrite;AuPtNi shell;methanol oxidation reaction

Synthesis of Au or Pt@Perovskite Nanocrystals via Interfacial Photoreduction

Jing Zhang,Li Wang,Wenwen Liu,Mengsha Cao,Jing Zhang,Ningyi Yuan,Shuai Zhang,Zhongze Gu

The surface modification of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) (i.e., their decoration with noble metals) holds great promise with respect to the tailoring of their properties but has remained a challenge because perovskite NCs are extremely sensitive to water and alcohols. In this study, Au or Pt@CsPbBr3NCs were successfully synthesized by photoreduction at the water/hexane interface. First, Cs4PbBr6NCs were synthesized through the hot-injection method. Then, Cs4PbBr6was transformed into CsPbBr3and subjected to noble metal modification, both at the interface. The synthesized CsPbBr3NCs exhibited a cubic perovskite phase and had an average size of approximately 13.5 nm. The deposited Au and Pt nanoparticles were crystalline, with a face-centered cubic lattice and average diameters of approximately 3.9 and 4.4 nm, respectively. The noble metal modification process had almost no effect on the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelength but affected the charge-recombination kinetics of the CsPbBr3NCs. Time-resolved PL decay spectral analysis indicated that the fluorescence lifetimes of the Au and Pt@CsPbBr3NCs were shorter than those of the pure CsPbBr3NCs, probably owing to the quenching of the free charges because of electron transfer from the perovskite to the noble metal nanoparticles. Keywords:perovskite nanocrystals;noble metal;interface;photoreduction
