STUDY QUESTIONAre there new genetic factors responsible for male infertility with normal sperm quantity and morphology?SUMMARY ANSWERWe identified the bi-allelic variants in KCNU1 and confirmed it a novel pathogenetic gene for male infertility mainly due to impaired sperm acrosome reactions (ARs).WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADYUntil now, the underlying genetic determinants for male affected individuals exhibiting normal sperm quantity and morphology have been largely unknown. Potassium/calcium-activated channel subfamily U member 1 (KCNU1) is a sperm-specific potassium channel. The Kcnu1 null mutation in male mice causes infertility due to the impaired progressive motility and AR.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATIONWe recruited a cohort of 126 male infertility individuals with typical asthenospermia or fertilization failure and focused on two infertile males from two consanguineous families from 2015 to 2020; whole-exome sequencing and homozygosity mapping were performed. We identified a homozygous missense variant (c.2144A>G, p.His715Arg) and a homozygous donor splice-site variant (c.1295 + 3A>C, p.Val405Glyfs*8) in KCNU1. Then, we generated a knock-in (KI) mouse model in September 2020 and have now carried out functional studies and possible treatment strategies.PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODSThe affected individuals with infertility were recruited from the Shanghai Ninth Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Genomic DNA from the affected individual was extracted from peripheral blood. Whole-exome sequencing, homozygosity mapping and in silico analyses were used to screen and identify KCNU1 variants, and the variants were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. We used C57BL/6N mouse to construct KI mouse model to mimic the reproductive phenotype in vivo. We performed functional experiments by western blotting, AR assay and immunofluorescent Staining. Finally, we performed IVF and ICSI to explore the treatment strategies.MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCEWe identified a homozygous missense variant (c.2144A>G, p.His715Arg) and a homozygous donor splice-site variant (c.1295 + 3A>C, p.Val405Glyfs*8) in KCNU1 in two infertile males. We demonstrated that the splice-site variant affected normal alternative splicing of KCNU1, thus leading to the loss of function of KCNU1. Meanwhile, the missense pathogenic variant reduced the KCNU1 protein levels in sperm of both the affected individual and the KI mouse model, resulting in impaired ARs and male infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection was able to rescue the deficiencies.LARGE SCALE DATAN/A LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTIONThe exact molecular mechanism of KCNU1 and pathways need to be further explore in the future.WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGSThis is the first report that establishes a causal relationship between KCNU1 deficiency and male infertility, confirming the critical role of KCNU1 in human reproduction. Our findings expand our knowledge of the genes that play critical roles in the human sperm AR and provide a new genetic marker for infertility.STUDY FUNDING/COMPETING INTEREST(S)This work was supported by the SHIPM-pi fund no. This work investigates the effect of Bi addition on the formation of sulfide inclusions, and also aims to improve the machinability and mechanical properties of type 0Cr18Ni9 stainless steel. Smelting experiments as well as machining and tensile tests were carried out in various low and high Bi content steels. Results show that the forms of Bi-MnS inclusions were: isolated particle, cavity-bridge link, semi- and complete encapsulation. The forms of MnS inclusions were found as: mushroom or rod-like, long strip, spherical, and spindle shape. The normalized frequency of 0.065, corresponding to the inclusion area above 50 μm 2 , was the greatest at 2300 ppm Bi, reflecting an increase in the number of larger-sized inclusions. The averge hardness of steel matrix and the inclusions at 0 ppm Bi was 179 and 166 kgf/mm 2 , while that after Bi addition was 154∼168 and 155∼166 kgf/mm 2 , respectively. The Bi addition to steel improved the surface finish of the steels after machining and increased the ductility of steel, but had little effect on the yield strength of steel.

Integration of radiative cooling and heating within a single textile is essential for effectively maintaining human thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption. However, most existing radiative thermal-management textiles depend either on complex micro/nanostructure fabrication techniques or on the simple stacking of cooling and heating layers, both of which substantially limit their scalability and long-term durability in practical applications. Here, we report a scalable dual-mode thermal management textile with biomimetic asymmetric solar confinement (ASCT), achieved through the design of asymmetric micro/nano-structures guided by controlled fiber-orientation alignment. ASCT demonstrates excellent solar modulation capability, with the high solar confinement (HSC) side exhibiting a solar absorptance of 97%, while the low solar confinement (LSC) side maintains a significantly lower absorptance of only 4.9%. Additionally, the mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity contrast between the two sides reaches up to 40%. Compared to conventional textiles, ASCT significantly enhances the thermal modulation range by up to 15 °C. More importantly, ASCT has mechanical robustness, breathability, softness, and durability tailored for wearable applications. This work offers a novel path to the structural design and scalable fabrication of textiles, which is expected to accelerate their advancement and practical deployment. Graphical abstract

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is an exercisable way to achieve large-scale application of hydrogen energy. It is of great significance to develop an effect, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalyst. Here, we applied the two-dimensional (2D) bismuth (Bi) to the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and proposed the strategies to enhance the catalytic performance of the catalyst. Due to more active sites located along the edges of 2D structure, Bi nanosheets revealed a higher electrocatalytic activity (overpotential of −958 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope of 122 mV/dec) than the bulk counterpart. To further evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of Bi nanosheets, the typical parameters measured in different H + concentration (C[H + ]) are carried out. The improved catalytic activity obtained in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 is attributed to enhancing the hydrogen adsorption and accelerating the charge transport on the surface of catalyst. Moreover, the durability of Bi nanosheets has been texted, where the current is not evident fluctuation during the 40,000 s electrolysis measurement indicating its excellent stability. The present work expands the application of Bi in the catalysis and provides the simple strategies to improve its hydrogen evolution performance.

The optimized design of size effects and interface effects can enhance the electron/Na-ion migration kinetics for energy-storage materials. Herein, small-size pomegranate-like Bi@C nanospheres (PBCNSs) are synthesized via a simple method and used as the anode of sodium-ion batteries. The composite has a hierarchical structure with ultra-small Bi nanoparticles embedded within carbon spheres which enable fast kinetics and efficient alleviation of stress/strain from the electrodes, and the conductive carbon matrix provides an interconnected electron transportation pathway. Moreover, the hierarchical structure can efficiently prevent the aggregation and pulverization of Bi nanoparticles. The PBCNSs anode delivers excellent sodium-storage performance with an outstanding rate performance (400.3 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, 372.8 mA h g−1 at 25 A g−1) and long-term cycle stability (340 mA h g−1 after 16 000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A g−1). More importantly, even at a high mass loading of 11.33 mg cm−2, a stable reversible capacity of 327.2 mA h g−1 can be obtained. The mechanism of the high performance was studied by electrochemical measurement and computer simulation.

The crossover of anolyte and catholyte during cycling places a serious obstacle for the performance of non-aqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs). Employing symmetric RFB is an effective strategy to alleviate this issue. A new bi-redox material, 1-(ferrocenylmethyl-amino)-anthraquinone (FcMeAAQ) composed of ferrocene and anthraquinone two moieties, is designed for symmetrical NARFB. Both experimental and density functional theory calculational results show the relatively good stability of FcMeAAQ when one-electron redox reaction is involved. The assembled symmetric NARFB with the Daramic AA-250 porous membrane delivers an open circuit voltage of 1.42 V, Coulombic efficiency of 90.8%, and energy efficiency of 81.8% over 100 cycles at the current density of 2 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, a peak power density of ~16 mW cm −2 is achieved at the state of charge of 100%.

Bi is a semimetal with unusual and attractive electronic properties. However, synthesis of nanoscale 0-2D Bi single crystal with good dispersity and quality without surfactants and substrates is still a challenge. In this paper, a novel, simple and low-cost solvothermal method for synthesis of 0-2D nanoscale Bi at mild conditions and without a surfactant/substrate is reported. By using Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O or NaBiO 3 ·2H 2 O as Bi sources and environmental friendly C 3 H 8 O 3 as solvent, we synthesized nanospheres , nanowires and nanoribbons characterized with monodispersity, high purity and crystallinity. The growth mechanism of the 0-2D nanostructure was discussed. It is found that the Bi source, concentration and solvent significantly influences the morphology and size. Single crystal free-standing nanoribbon has large magnetoresistance up to 540% at 100 K. This novel approach can be applied in synthesis of nanostructured Bi single crystals and the large-scale fabrication of some other nanostructured semimetals.

This paper presented the plasmonic Bi in-situ deposited on the surface of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 nanoplates forming plasma enhanced Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction photocatalyst through a facile one-pot solvothermal method by using methanol as both solvent and carbon source. The water splitting efficiency of the as-prepared Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction photocatalyst was much better than that of pure phase Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 due to the Bi nanoparticles surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect for promoting light response and the charge carriers separation and transfer. The experimental results also showed that the H 2 O played an important role in the fabrication of Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction photocatalyst, furthermore, the content of Bi in Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 changed with the variation of additional H 2 O which impacted photocatalytic activities . The method of semimetal in-situ deposition without reductants in this work also provided new perspectives into the rational design and facile synthesis of bismuth based semiconductor photocatalysts.

A novel hydrophilic/hydrophobic bi-comb-shaped amphoteric membrane was for the first time designed by the one-pot reactions of PBI with bromohexane and 1,3-propanesultone. The sulfonic acid chain promotes the formation of amphoteric ion clusters, while the alkyl side chain enhances the packing of hydrophobic segments. This unique structure design optimizes the segregated microphase morphology of the membrane, which is proved by TEM. Compared to the membrane without alkyl side chain, the bi-comb-shaped membrane shows a lowered area resistance (0.58 vs. 0.96 Ω cm 2 ) as well as a reduced swelling ratio (11.7% vs. 14.3%). As a result, the cell with the bi-comb-shaped membrane exhibits improved voltage efficiency, thus achieving increased energy efficiency. In addition, the membrane of this structure occupies excellent cycle stability. The cell efficiencies maintain almost stable for 250 cycles, and the chemical structure has no change after immersing in the electrolyte solution for 28 days.

The guided bone regeneration (GBR) concept has been extensively utilized to treat periodontal defects in clinical practice. However, the repair efficacy of the currently available GBR membranes is often compromised by their limited alveolar bone regeneration potential, insufficient mechanical strength and inadequate space maintenance duration. In this paper, a novel hybrid bi-layer scaffold was fabricated using electrospun polycaprolactone/gelatine (PCL/Gel) nanofibre membranes combined with 3D printed PCL/Gel/nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) scaffolds. Their manipulation parameters and microstructures were investigated, and biological studies of in vitro and in vivo bone regeneration were carried out. The heparin-conjugated PCL/Gel fibrous membrane could significantly promote L929 fibroblast adhesion and proliferation. The PCL/Gel/n-HA (PGH) scaffold could promote attachment, growth and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. After 20 weeks, the defect sites in the hybrid bi-layer scaffold group showed a higher degree of new bone formation than that in the control group, indicating that this is a promising material combination for GBR.

Bi-doped La 1.5-x Bi x Sr 0.5 Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 4+δ (LBSNM-x, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) was investigated as a potential air electrode for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC). The effect of Bi doping on the structure, electrical conductivity , chemical compatibility with GDC electrolyte, electrochemical performance and thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) were investigated. XRD characterization results show that the solid solution content of Bi is less than or equal to 0.1. XPS characterization results indicate that Bi doping increases the oxygen vacancy content of LBSNM-x air electrode and thus greatly benefits its oxygen evolution reaction . Among the Bi-doped samples, LBSNM-0.1 electrode has the best electrochemical performance with its lowest Rp (polarization resistance) of 0.28 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C based on LBSNM-0.1/GDC half-cell. LBSNM-0.1 single cell with 70%CO 2 + 30%CO fuel gas feed on the fuel electrode has achieved current density of 811 mA cm −2 at 800 °C and 1.4 V, a 62.2% increase relative to that of LSNM single cell. In addition, LBSNM-0.1 single cell exhibits excellent stability at 800 °C and 1.3 V with 70%CO 2 + 30%CO feed gas on the fuel electrode. These results prove that Bi-doped LBSNM-0.1 is an efficient air electrode for SOEC.

A multicomponent Bi-based Z-scheme photocatalyst, BISB, was developed through a hydrothermal method. In this sample, two semiconducting nanostructures, BiOI and Bi2S3, were linked together with the metal Bi nanoparticle. As compared with BiOI (BI) and heterojunction BiOI/Bi2S3 (BIS) samples, the BISB had optimal Rhodamine B (RhB) photodecomposition performance. High efficiency separation of photoexcited electrons and holes, decreased band gap energy, extended specific surface area, and promotional redox potential were key factors for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the prepared sample. The photoexcited holes were the key active radicals during the RhB photodecomposition process over the BISB catalyst, while ·O2¯ was also involved to a smaller extent. Additionally, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent reusability and stability during the photoreaction process, suggesting that the BISB sample could be a candidate for water purification applications.
