Fabrication of a PCN/BiOBr 2D hybrid with improved photocatalytic performance of 2,4-dichorophenol degradation

Shuangying Chen,Fushui Guo,Liantao Hao,Xuliang Zhang

Photocatalysis has received much attention as an environmentally friendly route to manage the emerging organic pollution problems. Herein, BiOBr nanosheets have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and then PCN/BiOBr hybrids are designed via a facile wet chemical method. The as-prepared PCN/BiOBr hybrids are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PCN/BiOBr composite exhibits remarkable improved activity in the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as compared to the pristine BiOBr. Based on the ·OH amount-related fluorescence spectra fluorescence and the photoelectrochemistry (PEC) tests, it is confirmed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of PCN/BiOBr is attributed to the promoted charge separation. Moreover, by means of the radical-trapping experiments it is demonstrated that the formed ·O2− species, as the electron-modulated direct products, are the primary active species during the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-DCP. This work would provide a feasible design strategy to fabricate high-activity photocatalysts for 2,4-DCP degradation.

pH-responsive ZnNb2O6/BiOBr-based membranes with photocatalytic, oil-water separation, and flame-retardant multifunctionality

Hang Xu,Feng Li,Taohai Li

Responsive superhydrophobic films have gained increasing interest for their tunable wettability and adaptive functionality, yet their poor environmental stability limits use in complex wastewater treatment. Herein, a multifunctional membrane integrating pH-responsive wettability, photocatalytic activity, efficient oil–water separation, and strong flame retardancy is reported. A ZnNb 2 O 6 /BiOBr composite with superior photocatalytic activity achieved 80% degradation of hydrochloric tetracycline (HTC). Based on this material, a ZnNb 2 O 6 /BiOBr/ODA patterned coating strategy was developed to construct a pH-responsive superwetting membrane capable of reversible transitions between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic states, serving as a conductive/non-conductive liquid identification based on wettability differences and response under extremely acidic (pH ≤ 3) conditions indicator. The membrane also exhibits remarkable flame suppression, >97% oil–water separation efficiency, and excellent reusability under harsh conditions, including crude-oil-contaminated seawater. This work provides a robust and intelligent membrane platform for environmental monitoring, wastewater purification, oil spill remediation, and fire-safe applications.

Hierarchical multilayer EDTA-BiOBr superamphiphobic coatings for enhanced eco-friendly photocatalytic degradation of nitric oxide

Huiyun Xia,Ningning Li,Minjie Yan,Wenshuo Zhang,Lifang Song,Liying Cui

In this study, a BiOBr nanomaterial with a hollow microsphere structure was successfully prepared through ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) assisted morphology control. Based on this photocatalytic material, epoxy resin was utilized as the film-forming material, and perfluorodecyl triethoxysilaneserved as the low surface energy component. A superamphiphobic self-cleaning coating with photocatalytic was fabricated using the layer-by-layer spray method. The microstructure, NO oxidation performance, liquid wettability, self-cleaning, and durability of the coating were tested. The surface of the coating presents rough micro-nanostructures, endowing the coating with superior superhydrophobicity, the degradation rate of NO by the coating reached 61.2 % and has a low NO 2 conversion rate. The water contact angle and olive oil contact angle of the coating are 164.2° and 151.5°, respectively. After soaking 10 % aqueous solutions of NaCl, HCl, and NaOH for 48 h, the water contact angle remains above 150°, suggesting that the coating exhibits remarkable superamphiphobicity and chemical stability. Ultimately, a sustainable and efficient long-term NO purification and degradation mechanism of the coating is proposed. The design method and application of this coating are expected to have a positive impact on the purification treatment of automobile exhaust inside tunnels.

Construction of BiOBr/Bi2WO6 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic degradation for tetracycline removal

Lan Zhang,Zhipeng Zou,Baofei Hao,Huizhong Ma

In this study, Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction composites were synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method. The experimental results demonstrate that the Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr composites exhibit a significant redshift in the light absorption edge and a reduction in bandgap compared with that of individual Bi 2 WO 6 and BiOBr. Meanwhile, the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers were accelerated in Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr composites. In the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline, the best composite displayed the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 91.3% after 60 min of light irradiation. Moreover, it maintained good stability even after four cycles. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity is primarily attributed to the formation of the S-scheme heterojunction and the strengthened interfacial interactions.

La-loaded BiOBr enhances photocatalytic nitrogen fixation activity by reducing energy barriers for ammonia release

Pingyu Yang,Junquan Chen,Yanqi Guo,Yupeng Yan,Guanjie Jiang,Qin Zhang,Yang Li

Rare earth element-loaded photocatalysts represent a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process for photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR). However, the underlying catalytic mechanisms remain insufficiently elucidated. In this work, lanthanum (La)-loaded bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) nanoflower-like spherical photocatalyst was employed as a model system to investigate the mechanistic role of rare-earth metal La in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Characterization results indicate that La 3 + incorporate into the BiOBr lattice, likely preferentially near or influencing the electronic environment of the pre-existing oxygen vacancies (OVs). Combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is shown that the introduction of La accelerates the subsequent steps: reducing the energy barriers for N hydrogenation (N→NH) and NH 3 desorption (*NH 3 →NH 3 ), facilitating both H addition to N and NH 3 release. La-loaded BiOBr (xLBOB) exhibits enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance, with 0.2LBOB (0.2 wt% La) showing the highest ammonia yield. This study provides theoretical insights for designing rare earth-modified photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials via local electron modulation and elucidates the reaction mechanism in depth.

Engineering an intimate BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunction with expanded graphite for enhanced photocatalytic antibiotic degradation

Tan Ye,Wu Xi,He Guoliang,Li Huilin,Zhou Jie,Tong Haixia,Yu Linping,Zeng Julan

With the advancement of the pharmaceutical industry and livestock farming, the increasing release of antibiotic-containing wastewater poses serious threats to both the natural environment and human health. Developing novel, efficient technologies to remove tetracycline from water is a critical priority. In this study, a ternary BiOBr/g-C 3 N 4 /EG composite was successfully synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method. Under optimal conditions, the composite achieved a tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency of 98.49% within 50 min of visible-light irradiation, with degradation rate constants 1.40 and 1.74 times higher than those of pristine BiOBr and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. XPS analysis revealed that the introduction of EG effectively suppressed the photoreduction of Bi 3+ to metallic Bi 0 , confirming that EG acts as an electron trap and establishes strong interfacial electronic interactions. BET analysis showed that the ternary composite possesses a specific surface area of 60.0 m 2 /g, which is significantly larger than that of BiOBr (28.9 m 2 /g) and g-C 3 N 4 (37.1 m 2 /g), promoting active site exposure and pollutant adsorption. PL spectroscopy demonstrated a marked decrease in emission intensity for the ternary composite, indicating effective suppression of electron–hole recombination. Mechanistic studies, including radical trapping and EPR, identified ·O 2 − and h + as the primary reactive species governing TC degradation. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of EG: (i) its oxygen-containing functional groups anchor BiOBr and g-C 3 N 4 , preserving heterojunction integrity; (ii) it serves as an electron trap to accelerate charge separation; and (iii) it enlarges the specific surface area and provides a conductive network for rapid charge transfer. This work offers a feasible and innovative strategy for designing high-performance carbon-supported semiconductor heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

Facile ion-exchange construction of Bi4Ti3O12/BiOBr heterojunctions for efficient charge transport: Mechanism and applications

Hongyang Wang,Chengqi Lu,Zilin Cao,Pengchang Sun,Zhongkang Han,Qianhong Shen,Zhongyuan Hu,Xudan Cao,Hui Yang

The pure Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 with a flower-like morphology followed by the controlled growth of BiOBr through a simple room-temperature ion-exchange process. This strategy enables the Aurivillius-type Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 and BiOBr share the (Bi 2 O 2 ) 2+ layers at the interface, which demonstrate by first-principles calculations and in-situ XPS. Benefiting from the coherent interface and type-II charge transfer pathway, the heterojunctions exhibited significantly enhanced charge separation, transport efficiency and significantly increasing the yield of photocatalytic reactive species. Thereby, the optimized sample achieved 91.3% degradation of 40 ppm tetracycline hydrochloride, 89.6% degradation of 15 ppm ciprofloxacin within 30 min,and 90.6% sulfamethoxazole after 120 min.Demonstrating superior photocatalytic performance compared to the previously reported analogous photocatalysts in recent years with respect to antibiotic degradation. The degradation efficiency of the as-prepared photocatalyst with a reduction of only 6% after three cycles. Therefore, this simple and scalable strategy of constructing coherent heterojunctions of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 /BiOBr exhibits immense potential for practical applications.

Synergistic antibiotic degradation by polydopamine/BiOBr-modified photocathode in self-powered photo-bio-electrochemical system

Mei-Qi Ren,Hong-Li Lu,Zhuo-Chao Liu,Tao Hou,Shuai Wang,Dan Cui,Yong-Zhen Peng

This study developed a self-powered photo-bio-electrochemical system (PBES) featuring a polydopamine/BiOBr (PDA/BiOBr) modified photocathode for sulfonamide (SA) antibiotic removal. The system achieved 96.5 ± 1.1 % SA removal at a rate of 21.2 ± 0.1 g/m 3 ·d while simultaneously generating a current density of 119.2 ± 10.4 mA/m 2 ,   significantly outperforming the efficiencies of both unmodified and PBES-BiOBr systems (2.0 ± 0.4 % and 64.5 ± 6.1 %). Mechanistic studies revealed that PDA facilitated electron transfer from the bioanode to the photocathode, where they reduced O 2 to form ·O 2 − . Photogenerated holes in the valence band of BiOBr oxidized surface-adsorbed H 2 O or OH − , producing ·OH under visible light. These radicals preferentially attacked high electron-density sites in SA, cleaning C S and C N bonds. Ecotoxicity assessment revealed that the degradation intermediates were fivefold less toxic than the parent SA compound. The PBES demonstrates great potential as a sustainable and effective strategy for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Efficient photocatalysis enabled by lignocellulose-derived carbon-modified BiOBr: Unlocking the key component in lignocellulose

Biyao Fang,Jianhao Qiu,Guanglu Xia,Lu Zhang,Yixin Li,Lei Zhang,Jianfeng Yao

The adoption of green lignocellulose-derived carbon to modify semiconductors for efficient photocatalysis is highly important, and the key component of lignocellulose urgently needs to be defined since lignocellulose is composed of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. In this study, poplar wood-derived carbon-modified BiOBr (BiOBr/PWC) was facilely constructed via a hydrothermal method for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under visible light. BiOBr/PWC has a distinctive flower-like morphology with a relatively high surface area, and enables efficient charge carrier separation. The Cr(VI) reduction rate over BiOBr/PWC dramatically improves to 95 % in comparison with those over BiOBr (6 %) and PWC (14 %). Poplar lignin-, cellulose-, and hemicellulose-derived carbon were separately integrated with BiOBr for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, and the reduction rates are 87 %, 62 %, and 62 %, respectively. Poplar lignin-derived carbon possesses the maximum degree of graphitization, and the corresponding BiOBr/carbon has an open pore structure, which is more conducive to charge carrier transmission and light absorption. Thus, lignin in poplar wood plays a dominant role in achieving the efficient photocatalysis of BiOBr/PWC. This work is the first to reveal the role of components in lignocellulose-derived carbon for photocatalysis, which will greatly advance the development of biochar-based photocatalysts.

Construction of BiOBr/BiVO4 S-scheme heterojunctions photocatalyst for efficient oxygen evolution from water splitting

Rui Li,Jingjing Peng,Fangxia Xie,Qing Xi,Jilong Qin,Houfen Li,Yawen Wang,Jianxin Liu,Xiaoli Ma,Xiuping Yue

Semiconductor photocatalytic oxygen evolution via water splitting is one of the most effective ways to address energy and environmental challenges. However, rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes limits the performance of single photocatalysts. Herein, we employed a facile alcoholysis-calcination method to synthesize BiOBr/BiVO 4 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts through the in situ conversion of BiOBr. This preparation method ensures intimate contact between BiOBr and BiVO 4 , establishing an electronic transfer channel that reduces the charge transfer distance and enhances charge transfer capabilities. Simultaneously, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to analyze charge transfer behavior. The results show that the S-scheme heterojunction promotes photogenerated electrons to transfer from the conduction band (CB) of BiVO 4 to the valence band (VB) of BiOBr. This transfer process facilitates efficient charge separation and enhances the system’s redox capabilities. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the BiOBr/BiVO 4 photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic oxygen evolution activity, with a rate of 266.38 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 and a photocurrent density of 1.8 μA·cm⁻². This corresponds to a 1.60-fold enhancement over pristine BiOBr and a 2.20-fold increase relative to BiVO 4 . Finally, the possible reaction mechanism has also been discussed. This work has provided valuable insights for the effective design of Bi-based S-scheme catalysts, which play a critical role in facilitating efficient directional transfer of photogenerated charges.

High-efficiency composite photocatalyst of NaYF4:Yb,Er/BiOBr with visible-near-infrared light response

Zhenlin Wang,Anze Shui,Hulei Yu,Mei Cai

Photocatalysis presents a promising solution for environmental remediation, though conventional photocatalysts remain constrained to the ultraviolet and partially visible regions of the solar spectrum. To address this limitation, we developed a NaYF 4 :Yb,Er/BiOBr (N/B) composite photocatalyst, leveraging upconversion luminescence to convert near-infrared photons into visible light while utilizing BiOBr's narrow bandgap for enhanced visible-light absorption. The composite photocatalyst was fabricated via a two-step solvothermal approach and evaluated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). Remarkably, the N/B-120°C sample demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity, achieving degradation rates 2.4- and 5.4-fold higher than those of pristine BiOBr and commercial TiO 2 (P25), respectively. This enhanced performance is attributed to synergistic effects including an increased specific surface area (23.96 m 2 /g for N/B-120°C vs. 16.28 m 2 /g for BiOBr), reduced charge transfer resistance (as evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) Nyquist plots), elevated oxygen vacancy concentration (as verified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy [XPS]), and extended solar spectral utilization range (400–980 nm). This work presents a viable strategy to improve the efficiency of photocatalysis.

Regulation of visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B on BiOBr via zeta potential

Tang Chang-cun,Fang Yan-fen,Cao Xin-qiang,Tian Hai-lin,Huang Ying-ping

In this paper, bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) photocatalysts were synthesized in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at the different volume fractions of ethanol/water and named as BiOBr 0 , BiOBr 20 , BiOBr 50 , BiOBr 80 and BiOBr 100 , respectively. The samples were characterized and applied to the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation ( λ  ≥ 420 nm). The results indicated that both TBAB and ethanol significantly affected the crystal phase, morphology and surface charge distribution of BiOBr. The exposed (110) faces of BiOBr with Bi 3+ sites contributed to its photocatalytic activity via the enhanced separation of electrons and photogenerated holes as well as the better photo-stability. BiOBr 50 showed the optimal activity for the photodegradation of RhB. Superoxide radical (O ·− 2 ) as the dominant active species was responsible for the degradation of RhB.
