Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a common and outstanding plasticizer, exhibits estrogenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic properties. It is easily liberated from plastic materials and pollutes aquatic ecosystems, endangering human health. Therefore, highly sensitive and selective DBP detection methods are necessary. In this work, a free-of-electronic sacrificial agent photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for DBP detection was constructed using a novel Z-scheme Bi-doped BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 (Bi-BIS) p-n heterojunction. The Bi-BIS composites had higher visible-light absorption, charge transfer, and separation efficiency. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the formation of Z-scheme p-n heterojunction between BiOI and Bi 2 S 3 , the plasma resonance effect of metallic Bi and photosensitization of Bi 2 S 3 , thus exhibiting large and stable photocurrent response in the absence of electron sacrificial agent, that was 10.4 and 6.4 times higher than that of BiOI and Bi 2 S 3 , respectively. Then, a DBP PEC aptasensor was constructed by modifying the DBP aptamer on the surface of the ITO/Bi-BIS electrode. The aptasensor demonstrated a broad linear range (2–500 pM) and a low detection limit (0.184 pM). What's more, because there is no interference from electronic sacrificial agent, the aptasensor exhibited excellent selectivity in real water samples. Therefore, the proposed PEC has considerable potential for DBP monitoring.

It is challenging and still difficult to adjust and boost the catalytic performance of photocatalysts via the synergistic achievement of heteroatom doping, vacancies engineering, morphology regulation, and appropriate structural design. Herein, we developed an efficient method to synthesize 3D hierarchical porous BiOI–Bi 2 S 3 S-scheme heterojunction with oxygen vacancies (Ov-BBS) induced by sulfur doping and systematically investigated regulation of oxygen vacancies by sulfur doping and their effects on photocatalytic performance. Results showed that sulfur species promoted the formation of S-scheme heterojunction but depleted oxygen vacancies in Ov-BiOI. The optimal sulfur doped catalyst (Ov-BBS-0.1) exhibited excellent UV–vis light photocatalytic activity towards four representative pollutants, affording removal rate of 97.1 % for MB, 97.6 % for RhB, 99.4 % for Cr(VI), and 92.0 % for TC, respectively, which were higher than those of pristine Bi 2 S 3 , BiOI, Ov-BiOI, Ov-BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 mixture, Ov-BBS-0.05, and Ov-BBS-0.2. Deep characterizations and theoretical studies certified that the four-pronged enhancement strategy of 3D hierarchical porous structure, oxygen vacancies, sulfur doping and the constructed S-scheme heterojunction, not only enriched accessible active sites, but also promoted electronic polarization and modulated electronic structure, resulting in rapid separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, considering the excellent stability and cyclic photocatalytic performance, the film prepared by pumping Ov-BBS dispersion was also satisfactory in the practical application of circulating sewage treatment. Overall, the present work provides a novel approach for the design of more photocatalysts with high efficiency.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a refractory pollutant presents in water body that possesses serious threats to living organisms. To deal with it, we investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 composite as a novel photocatalyst for BPA removal from aqueous solutions under UV–vis irradiation. To enhance its removal for BPA, the surface of BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 is modified with graphene oxide (GO). This composite is named as ‘GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 ’. Changes in its physico-chemical properties after surface modification with GO are characterized by XRD, FTIR, FESEM-EDS, XPS, PL, and BET methods. Optimized conditions of BPA degradation by the composite are determined under identical conditions. Photodegradation pathways of BPA and its removal mechanisms by the same composite are presented. It is obvious that the GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 has demonstrated its potential as a promising photocatalyst for BPA removal under UV–vis irradiation. About 81% of BPA removal is attained by the GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 under optimized conditions (10 mg/L of BPA, 0.5 g/L of dose, pH 7 and 5 h of reaction time). The oxidation by-products of BPA degradation include p -hydroquinone or 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-phenol. In spite of its performance, the treated effluents are still unable to meet the maximum discharge limit of <1 mg/L set by national legislation. Therefore, subsequent biological processes are essential to maximize its biodegradation in the wastewater samples before their discharge into waterbody.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries emerge as a promising energy storage system with merits of high security, abundance, and being environmentally benign. But the low operating voltages of aqueous electrolytes restrict their energy densities. Previous reports have mostly focused on modifying the electrolytes to enlarge the operating voltages of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. However, either extra-expensive salts or potential safety hazards of organic additives are considered to be adverse for practical large-scale applications. Here, a proof-of-concept to enlarge the operating voltage of an aqueous zinc-ion battery by incorporating a well-designed semiconductor photocathode is proposed, which produces a photovoltage (Vph) across the semiconductor/liquid junction (SCLJ) interface to elevate the output voltage of zinc-ion battery under irradiation. The operating voltage of an aqueous zinc-ion battery can be markedly raised from 1.78 (thermodynamic limit) to 2.4 V when a BiOI nanoflake array photocathode with good surface modification is introduced, achieving a round-trip efficiency of 114.3% and a 34.8% increase of energy density compared to the theoretical value. The successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction modified surface effectively passivates surface trap defects of the BiOI photocathode and thus enlarges its Vph from 60 to 240 mV under irradiation. This study provides a design to enlarge the output voltages of aqueous zinc-ion batteries and other energy storage systems, providing insight into widening the voltage window, which is that the operating voltages are determined by photocathode under irradiation and not restricted by the electrochemical stability window of dilute aqueous electrolytes.

The narrow light-response range and high electron/hole recombination rate greatly restrict the widespread use of photocatalytic technology . The integration of exposing dominant facet of semiconductor and Z-scheme heterostructures designing is expected to break those barriers. Herein,In this work, hydrothermal and ultrasonic stirring methods were used to selectively exposed the (001) and (110) facet of BiOI to construct the BiOI/CdS heterostructures. The obtained BiOI(001)/CdS material shown the maximum degradation for tetracycline-based antibiotics (Oxytetracycline, Tetracycline and Doxycycline), and excellent reduction of hexavalent chromium. Combining the electron spin resonance and scavenger experiments, the superior photocatalytic capacity was attributed to the generation of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals . DFT calculation results shown BiOI(001)/CdS performed high binding energy and adsorption energy for hexavalent chromium, and the different work function between BiOI(001) and CdS confirmed the building of internal electric field, thereby increased the charge separation. Finally, the Gaussian 09 and HPLC-MS program investigated the attack sites of free radicals and degradation pathways in the degradation of antibiotics. This study not only provides a potential photocatalyst, also gives an in-depth understanding of the photocatalytic properties of heterojunctions constructed by different exposed crystal facets.

Critical to sensor performance in real agricultural matrices are high interference resistance and prevention of false-positive/negative signals. To address this, a Z-scheme BiOI nanoflakes (NFs)/Au NPs/TiO2 NPs heterojunction was designed with photocurrent-polarity-switching capability, an inherent feature that could minimize interference from oxidative and reductive species. Subsequently integrated Fe3O4 NPs with catalase-mimicking activity suppressed the photocurrent response to baseline levels, substantially reducing the background noise. In the presence of glyphosate (Gly), the quenching effect was inhibited, leading to a “signal on–off–on” photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection mode. In addition, the inherent magnetism of Fe3O4 NPs enhanced the specificity by facilitating the efficient removal of nonbound interferents and enabling “split-type” PEC detection processes. This approach achieved Gly quantification within a linear range of 0.05–5 mg·L–1, with practical applicability demonstrated in three agricultural matrices. By strategically integrating heterojunction engineering with magnetic nanozyme signaling, this work establishes a PEC sensing paradigm exhibiting exceptional anti-interference capability.
