BiVO 4 is known for its ability to decompose water under visible light irradiation. However, BiVO 4 overall suffers from rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, low photochemical conversion efficiency, low specific surface area, poor conductivity, and weak adsorption capacity of dye. These features limited its application in photocatalysis. In this work, ternary Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 nanocomposites were successfully fabricated by in situ electrostatic adsorption of g-C 3 N 4 sheets on RGO/BiVO 4 surface using hydrothermal and thermal oxidations processes. The ternary Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 nanocomposites were then tested for photodegradation of Rhodamine B. The introduction of graphene into direct Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 nanocomposites as an electronic accelerator efficiently enhanced the photocatalytic properties. The as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 composites exhibited optimal visible light responses with significantly improved photocatalytic performances toward degradation of Rhodamine B. The degradation efficiency using ternary photocatalyst reached 100% after 20 min of irradiation time. The reaction rate constant was estimated to 1.537, which was almost 29- and 20-folds higher than those of pure g-C 3 N 4 and binary g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 , respectively. The synergistic effect between BiVO 4 , RGO and g-C 3 N 4 yielded g-C 3 N 4 /RGO/BiVO 4 composites with Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, promoting rapid separation and slow recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs with strong photocatalytic activity. Overall, these findings look promising for design of future Z-scheme photocatalysts for environmental degradation of organic dyes.

In this work, a BiVO 4 /ZnO composite film was fabricated via a combination of the liquid phase deposition technique and the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction observations revealed that wurtzite ZnO and monoclinic BiVO 4 were successfully formed in the composite film. UV–visible spectra indicated that the formation of the BiVO 4 /ZnO film resulted in improved absorption and an obvious redshift. Photoluminescence analysis revealed that the BiVO 4 /ZnO film exhibited superior charge-transfer properties to pure ZnO and BiVO 4 films. The fabricated BiVO 4 /ZnO film was applied to the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of tetracycline. The BiVO 4 /ZnO film showed higher visible-light PEC activity than did pure ZnO and BiVO 4 films. Moreover, the tetracycline degradation efficiency achieved by the PEC process over the BiVO 4 /ZnO film was higher than those achieved using the photolysis, electrochemical oxidation , and photocatalysis processes. The BiVO 4 /ZnO film was able to effectively remove more than 90% tetracycline when the initial concentration of tetracycline was lower than 10 mg/L.

BiVO 4 is one of the most promising photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting but their performance is still limited by charge recombination and sluggish surface kinetics. To deal with these limitations, various Co:BiVO 4 /CoO x photoanodes were prepared in this work. Photocurrent density was increased by a factor of 2-3 by optimizing Co-doping. To find out the enhance mechanism, photoinduced absorption spectroscopy (PIAS) was employed to establish the relationship between photocurrent density and concentration of the photogenerated holes on surface. Meanwhile, intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) was applied to measure the rate constant of charge transfer and surface recombination. The improved PEC performance was attributed to the synergy effect of Co-doping that increased the bulk charge separation efficiency and significantly suppressed surface recombination by two orders of magnitude at high potentials. More importantly, our investigation reveals that not all the surface holes could participate in water oxidation reaction and the utilization proportion of them was strongly dependent on Co-doping and potential. Not more than 12 % of the photogenerated holes were used for water oxidation on the pristine BiVO 4 surface over a wide potential range. In contrast, as high as 80 % of the photogenerated holes participated in water oxidation with the assistance of the CoO x nano-catalysts. It is the critical enhancement mechanism of the Co:BiVO 4 /CoO x photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water oxidation.

Rechargeable neutral aqueous zinc−air batteries (ZABs) are a promising type of energy storage device with longer operating life and less corrosiveness compared with conventional alkaline ZABs. However, the neutral ZABs normally possess poor oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and oxygen reduction reactions performance, resulting in a large charge–discharge voltage gap and low round-trip efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate a sunlight-assisted strategy for achieving an ultralow voltage gap of 0.05 V in neutral ZABs by using the FeOOH-decorated BiVO 4 (Fe-BiVO 4 ) as an oxygen catalyst. Under sunlight, the electrons move from the valence band (VB) of Fe-BiVO 4 to the conduction band producing holes in VB to promote the OER process and hence reduce the overpotential. Meanwhile, the photopotential generated by the Fe-BiVO 4 compensates a part of the charging potential of neutral ZABs. Accordingly, the energy loss of the battery could be compensated via solar energy, leading to a record-low gap of 0.05 V between the charge and discharge voltage with a high round-trip efficiency of 94%. This work offers a simple but efficient pathway for solar-energy utilization in storage devices, further guiding the design of high energy efficiency of neutral aqueous ZABs.

In this study, a BiVO 4 photoanode was prepared via electrodeposition, and FeOCl was subsequently loaded onto its surface by calcination to construct a novel n–n type FeOCl/BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanode with a S-scheme charge transfer pathway. Using levofloxacin (LVF) as the target pollutant, the photoelectrocatalytic performance of various photoanodes was systematically evaluated. Under an applied bias of 0.6 V and 0.075 mM PMS, the FeOCl/BiVO 4 photoanode achieved a 79% LVF removal efficiency within 30 minutes, representing a 39% enhancement over pristine BiVO 4 , along with significant mineralization capacity. The addition of PMS notably improved the degradation performance. Photoelectrochemical analyses revealed that FeOCl suppressed charge recombination and enhanced PEC activity. Scavenger experiments demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 · − ), and photogenerated holes ( h + ) all contributed to the pollutant degradation. Furthermore, pH adaptability, anion interference, and cyclic stability tests demonstrated the photoanode’s broad pH tolerance, excellent anti-interference ability, and good reusability. Notably, the FeOCl/BiVO 4 photoanode also exhibited effective degradation of other typical organic pollutants, such as tetracycline, carbamazepine, and ciprofloxacin, highlighting its promising application potential.

To understand the consequence of an Fe2O3/BiVO4 heterojunction simply, we fabricated an FTO/Fe2O3/BiVO4 composite photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. We discovered that forming a heterojunction between the Fe2O3 underlayer and BiVO4 upper layer dramatically increased the photocurrent in the low bias region. This photocurrent density increased six-fold from 0.15 mA cm−2 at 0.6 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for BiVO4 to 0.95 mA cm−2 at 0.6 V vs. RHE for BiVO4 with the Fe2O3 underlayer. The faradaic efficiency of PEC water splitting was close to 100%, and the molar ratio of the generated hydrogen to oxygen was 2 : 1. However, the photocurrent did not improve in the high bias region; at higher than 1.23 V vs. RHE, the photocurrent density of the FTO/Fe2O3/BiVO4 electrode was lower than that of the bare BiVO4 electrode. The effects of the Fe2O3 underlayer greatly improved the charge separation efficiency, but such improvements were noted only in the low bias region. In addition, the PEC performance was observed to depend on the thickness of the Fe2O3 underlayer. The optimised FTO/Fe2O3/BiVO4 electrode was achieved when the Fe2O3 underlayer was approximately 350 nm thick and when the BiVO4 upper layer had approximately the same thickness as the underlayer.

A MoO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction film consisting of dispersed nano-MoO 3 on the surface of BiVO 4 nanoflake was constructed for photoelectrochemical water oxidation . In comparison with bare BiVO 4 and MoO 3 film, the MoO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction film shows enhanced water oxidation activity. At 0.8 V vs. SCE, the photocurrent on the optimal MoO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction film increases by up to about 6 times compared to that on the bare BiVO 4 film. The conduction and valence band potential of MoO 3 are found to be more positive than those of BiVO 4 , and the electric conductivity for MoO 3 and BiVO 4 is on the order of 10 −6 S cm −1 and 10 −9 S cm −1 , respectively. Thus, the origin of enhanced water oxidation activity on the MoO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction film can be primarily ascribed to the band potential and conductivity differences between MoO 3 and BiVO 4 , which are advantageous for separating and transferring the surface charge of BiVO 4 .

Solar energy is used as a driving force to create electron-hole pairs on the surface of electrodes, releasing hydrogen and oxygen through oxidative reductionism, which can directly generate clean energy by a lower resource and environmental costs. The novel ternary photoanode was successfully prepared by Bi nanoparticles modified on BiVO 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction using simple and effective SILAR and impregnation reduction method. Based on the successful construction of heterostructure to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs, the addition of plasmonic nanoarchitectures can effectively capture photons and improve the water oxidation performance of semiconductors through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The ternary photoanode shows a significant improvement with bare BiVO 4 photoanode, its photocurrent density reachs 2.72 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is 4.2 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 photoanode (0.65 mA cm −2 ). The IPCE and the ABPE are substantially increased by 2.7 times and 5 times higher than single component, respectively.

The performance of BiVO 4 for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water decomposition is commonly limited by reaction kinetics. In this work, NiS and CoS nanospheres were respectively loaded on BiVO 4 thin films (NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 composites) to improve its reaction kinetics for PEC water decomposition. Both physical and chemical properties of these composites were characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM, PL and UV-DRS. The photoelectric properties of the samples were verified by testing LSV , i-t, EIS and IPCE. The formation of the composites can effectively prevent the recombination of carriers and consequently accelerate the separation of electrons and holes. NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 can reach photocurrent of 2.1 mA cm −2 and 2.7 mA cm −2 under light respectively, at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which are 1.75 times and 2.25 times that of BiVO 4 (1.2 mA cm −2 ). The hydrogen production of the NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 photoanodes was 4.7 and 7.3 times higher than that of BiVO 4 photoanode, respectively.

By virtue of the facile anion-exchange technique, smart BiOI/BiVO4 two-dimensional (2D) heteronanostructure (HNS) photocatalysts targeted for the degradation of organic pollutants have been developed by the in situ growth of BiVO4 on the scaffolds of BiOI nanoplates. The as-obtained BiOI/BiVO4 HNSs exhibited excellent 2D structure as templates of BiOI nanoplates and well structure stability due to the in situ growth pattern of BiVO4 on BiOI. The 2D HNSs exhibited superior photocatalytic activities, especially the V/I8 2D HNSs (V:I = 80%), exhibited the highest Rhodamine B (RhB) and salicylic acid (SA) degradation rates, which are 29.8 times (RhB) and 15.7 times (SA) those of the individual BiVO4 and 6.4 times (RhB) and 10 times (SA) those of BiOI, respectively. Such excellent photocatalytic activities should be attributed to the organic combination of the 2D structure and heterojunction, as verified by the detailed morphology and composition characterizations. The well-known unique advantages of 2D nanostructures such as efficient light harvesting, quick reactant transport, exposure of plenty of surface reactive sites, and significantly reduced perpendicular migration distances of photogenerated carriers from the interior to the surface of materials, coupled with enhanced carrier separation behavior due to the built-in field at the heterointerface endow the 2D HNSs with ultrastrong photocatalytic abilities. It is hoped that our work could offer a paradigm for the development of smart 2D HNS optoelectronic functional materials used in photosynthesis, solar cells, sensors, catalysis, and so on, in the future.

The low carrier mobility of BiVO4 is a bottleneck that limits its charge transfer in bulk or on the surface. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets as an effective electron mediator were successfully loaded on BiVO4 and NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) were decorated on BiVO4/rGO heterojunctions by two facile electrodeposition methods to construct a triadic photoanode of BiVO4/rGO/NiFe-LDH for improvement of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting efficiency of BiVO4. This photoanode significantly extends the absorption region of visible light, increases the photocurrent density, exhibits an onset potential with a significant cathodic shift, and enhances photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) compared with the pristine BiVO4 photoanode. The enhancement of PEC properties benefits from the formation of p–n heterojunctions between rGO and BiVO4 and the use of NiFe-LDH as a cocatalyst for accelerating the kinetics of oxygen evolution from water.

The sluggish surface reaction kinetic is the bottleneck limiting the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation of BiVO 4 photoanode, especially for the porous structured BiVO 4 with high surface area. Here, Co-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were modified on porous BiVO 4 photoanode followed by calcining in the N 2 atmosphere, forming BiVO 4 -MOF-N 2 photoanode. The MOF-derived heterostructural cocatalysts significantly enhanced the photocurrent density of BiVO 4 -MOF-N 2 , reaching 2.32 mA·cm −2 (1.23 V vs RHE), about 1.15 times that of BiVO 4 -MOF and 2.64 times that of pristine BiVO 4 . The comparative study of BiVO 4 -MOF-N 2 , BiVO 4 -MOF, and pristine BiVO 4 photoanodes suggested that the Co-MOF-derived heterostructural cocatalyst had a much stronger effect on promoting the surface reactions than pure MOF. The BiVO 4 -MOF-N 2 photoanode had the highest charge transfer efficiency of 63.1 % at 1.3 V vs RHE and the lowest charge transfer resistivity compared with BiVO 4 and BiVO 4 -MOF. Both Co-active centers and conductive carbon matrix contributed to the enhanced charge transfer of BiVO 4 -MOF-N 2 photoanode. A MOF-loading-time dependent PEC performance of BiVO 4 photoanode also indicated that the intermediate charge transfer process from BiVO 4 to active centers strongly affected the final charge transfer and PEC performances. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance photoelectrochemical electrodes based on heterostructural cocatalysts.
