Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) present significant advantages in energy applications; however, their incorporation into functional systems remains challenging, primarily due to issues such as pronounced agglomeration and insufficient interfacial interactions with host materials. In this study, we present a versatile in situ growth strategy for N-CNTs using a liquid-phase precursor and silica nanospheres as sacrificial templates. The silica nanospheres are demonstrated to play a pivotal role in promoting the controlled growth of N-CNTs during the pyrolysis of an ionic liquid, thereby effectively mediating the composition and structural evolution of the resulting carbon material. This method achieves a nitrogen doping content of 5.5 wt%, predominantly consisting of pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species, and a specific surface area of 698.7 m² g–1, both of which contribute to significantly enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic activity under alkaline conditions. The proposed strategy offers a scalable and facile route for integrating N-CNTs into carbon-based electrocatalysts, providing significant potential for advanced applications in fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

A rationally designed three-dimensional (3D) heterostructure integrating anisotropic low-dimensional materials (such as one-dimensional nanotubes and two-dimensional crystals) exhibits synergistic properties unattainable in individual components. By combining the axial anisotropy of 1D materials with the in-plane characteristics of 2D materials, such architectures offer broad application prospects in areas such as out-of-plane electrical conduction and 3D thermal diffusion. In this study, a 3D chemically bonded heterostructure comprising vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) and defect-free graphite was synthesized via optimized Al 2 O 3 /Fe/graphite catalytic system, forming a 3D VA-CNTs/graphite allotropic heterostructure without an intermediate dielectric layer. Experiments have proved that the presence of amorphous Al 2 O 3 effectively confines lateral migration of Fe nanoparticles and suppresses their ripening, thereby reducing the size dispersion of the catalyst particles, ultimately facilitating an ordered growth of VA-CNTs. Furthermore, this confinement mechanism shows its applicability to other 2D materials like h-BN, which broadens its potential applications. This reveals a new way of developing novel anisotropic 3D nanostructures based on hierarchical CNT grafting, allowing the utilization of the intrinsic properties of both nanomaterials, with potential applications in various fields.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ideal 1D materials with nanometer-scale diameters, offering outstanding electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, making them widely used in thermal management applications. In this study, high-density CNTs were grown perpendicular to the fiber axis on the carbon fiber (CF) surface to synthesize an innovative CF-CNTs filler. This filler manifests multi-directional thermal conductivity, meaning that heat can be conducted along the axes of both CF and CNTs simultaneously. Then, CF-CNTs were vertically oriented and combined with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare the dual-oriented elastic composite, VACPCN. CF-CNTs hybrid and composites have been tested in multiple dimensions to characterize their unique morphology and physicochemical properties, confirming the successful preparation of CF-CNTs. Due to composite’s fabulous thermal conductivity and elasticity, VACPCN-15 was employed for chip thermal management, reducing the chip’s operating temperature by 6.9 °C. Meanwhile, the composite demonstrated high absorbance (23) and absorptivity (97.9 %) under low load (5 %). After irradiation with a simulated sunlight for 600 s, its temperature rose to 120.1 °C, which is 35.1 °C higher than that of PDMS. Furthermore, VACPCN indicated outstanding thermal cycling and photothermal cycling stability. Overall, the VACPCN exhibits substantial promise for transformative applications in the fields of microelectronic thermal management and solar energy conversion, offering a compelling solution for addressing the growing demands for efficient heat dissipation and renewable energy utilization.

In this study, through a targeted experimental approach, polyethersulfone/carbon nanotubes (PES/CNTs) films with variable carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents were fabricated by the phase inversion approach and employed in carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites prepared by the vacuum-assisted resin infusion process to upgrade the toughness of composites. The dissolution of the PES/CNTs films in the epoxy resin was revealed to be controllable, which guaranteed a gradient distribution of polyethersulfone and CNTs between the layers. As observed, the CF/EP composites with PES/CNTs films containing 0.5 phr CNTs provided the optimized mode I fracture toughness with a 120.4% increase in G IC compared to the reference. Whereas, the G IIC of the composites with PES/CNTs film containing 1.0 phr CNTs was increased by 92.5%. Additionally, observation of the fracture surfaces of mode I and mode II specimens by scanning electron microscopy revealed that PES/CNTs films toughened CF/EP composites via three mechanisms: i) crack deflection and secondary microcracks initiation caused by polyethersulfone microspheres, ii) cracks bridging effect and pull-out from the epoxy matrix of CNTs and iii) CNTs distributed between epoxy matrix and polyethersulfone microsphere led to more energy consumption, which had a synergistic effect. This method overcomes the trade-off between toughness and stiffness in traditional interleaving methods, providing a new approach for the manufacturing of high-performance CF/EP composites.

Against the backdrop of the increasingly severe global water crisis, solar-powered interface evaporation technology is widely regarded as a highly promising alternative seawater desalination strategy due to its outstanding energy conversion efficiency, sustainability advantages, and significant cost-effectiveness. In this study, a Janus-structured Porous Cobalt Carbon Nanotubes/Carbon (Porous-Co-CNTs/C) fiber evaporator was successfully fabricated via multi-fluid electrospinning combined with thermal treatment and vapor deposition. The evaporator features a unique design: The modified CNTs exhibit hydrophilicity and act as a light-absorbing layer, while the relatively hydrophobic carbon fibers act as a heat-insulating layer. This phenomenon is attributed to the remarkably high photothermal conversion capability of CNTs, in conjunction with the thermal localization property of porous carbon fibers. The results reveal an evaporation rate of 1.46 kg m −2 h −1 and a remarkable energy conversion efficiency of 97.2% under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ). Furthermore, the evaporator exhibits robust treatment capabilities for organic dyes and acidic/alkaline wastewater. Coupled with its long-term stability, these findings underscore the great potential of the Porous-Co-CNTs/C Janus fiber evaporator in desalination and wastewater reclamation applications.

Carbon nanotube–polydimethylsiloxane (CNT–PDMS) composites hold significant potential using in flexible electronics and sensors, owing to their remarkable synergy between electrical conductivity and flexibility. However, current fabrication techniques face critical challenges such as the limited structural versatility of conventionally thermally cured PDMS, and the uneven dispersion and agglomeration of CNTs, hindering their fabrication and performance. This study tries to strike a balance between structural design flexibility and functional performance enhancement through the implementation of electric field-assisted strategies, offering a novel approach for the customization of flexible electronic devices. The electric field-induced alignment mechanism of CNTs and fibers within PDMS composites is studied. A comprehensive analysis of CNTs and fiber alignment in the PDMS solution is conducted, followed by characterization of CNT–PDMS. Ternary composites consisting of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS)-structured carbon fibers and CNT-reinforced PDMS are fabricated by integrating liquid crystal display 3D-printed sacrificial templates with electric field-assisted alignment. Different TPMS structures and the effect of relative density on the compressive properties of the composites are studied.

The π–π interactions in the sp 2 -C surfaces result in low electronic activity, necessitating the functionalization of CNTs to reduce surface energy and form carbon-based composites. However, current efforts to improve the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of carbon-based composites have largely focused on composite design, overlooking the changes in the intrinsic electromagnetic properties of CNTs after functionalization. Herein, three commonly used functionalized CNTs were designed and synthesized, and their kinetic processes and changes in electromagnetic wave dissipation mechanisms were systematically investigated. The results show that the functionalization of CNTs disrupts their original π-conjugated system; although dipolar polarization effects are introduced, their charge transport capability is significantly reduced, leading to a decrease in conductive losses. Furthermore, the disruption of electron transport pathways has a more pronounced impact on electromagnetic wave absorption performance, becoming a key factor influencing the overall electromagnetic wave absorption effectiveness. These findings provide important guidance for the design of novel carbon-based electromagnetic wave absorption materials. During composite design, in addition to incorporating other absorption mechanisms, particular attention should be paid to the repair of electron transport pathways to ensure excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a crucial half-reaction of water splitting to produce possible future energy carrier: H 2 , which is directly associated with the conversion and storage of clean energy. There is a great demand on efficient earth-abundant electrocatalysts to replace Pt, especially in alkaline medium . Herein, we report Co 2 Ni alloy anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co 2 Ni alloy/N-CNTs) as an efficient alkaline HER electrocatalyst. The alloy is prepared from a straightforward hydrothermal reaction and a post-annealing process in NH 3 atmosphere, which in situ reduces the nickel cobalt carbonate hydroxide precursor to alloy and brings N-doping to CNTs without changing original morphology. The as-obtained Co 2 Ni alloy/N-CNTs hybrids exhibit superior alkaline HER performance with a small Tafel slope of 87 mV dec −1 , high exchange current density of 0.8 mA cm −2 and a low overpotential of 100 mV to drive current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is comparable to commercial Pt/C and surpasses numerous reported earth-abundant electrocatalysts . This electrocatalyst can also endure long-time HER process (>24 h). The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to accelerated charge transfer, more exposed active sites and structural robustness which all benefit from the structural and component configuration that brought by alloy and N-doped CNTs.

With the widespread use of electronic devices, electromagnetic radiation pollution has become increasingly severe, posing potential threats to human health and the ecological environment. This study successfully prepared a tough, adhesive, green, and multifunctional semi-interpenetrating network organic hydrogel using a three-step method, and enhanced its electromagnetic shielding performance by incorporating CNTs@ZIF-67 composite nanoparticles. An environmentally friendly semi-interpenetrating network organic hydrogel was constructed using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and bio-based gelatin (Gel). Through an in-situ growth method, ZIF-67 was grown on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to prepare CNTs@ZIF-67 composite nanoparticles. Using a one-pot approach, these composite nanoparticles were dispersed in a precursor solution containing gelatin and polyvinyl alcohol, followed by cyclic freeze-thaw processing to fabricate a novel hydrogel material that combines high toughness with outstanding electromagnetic shielding performance. When incorporating 50 mg of CNTs@ZIF-67, the organic hydrogel achieves a conductivity of 0.512±0.026 S/m, a compressive modulus of 41.8±2.09 kPa, a compressive deformation rate of 66.33±3.01%, a moisture content of 88.99±0.89%, and a water absorption rate of 265.92±1.33%. The PGZC1 organic hydrogel with a thickness of 3 mm exhibits an average electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 33.32±1.67 dB within the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), thus providing an innovative material solution for mitigating electromagnetic wave pollution.

As a green technology with great development potential, solar-driven interfacial evaporation is considered to be an effective way to alleviate the freshwater crisis and achieve efficient water treatment. However, there are still great challenges in preparing evaporators with efficient evaporation, continuous water supply, and structural stability. In this paper, a low-cost CS/PVA@CNTs composite aerogel solar evaporator was prepared by freeze-drying method. CS and PVA form a stable three-dimensional hydrophilic porous backbone through hydrogen bond interactions, ensuring continuous and efficient water transport. At the same time, the introduction of photothermal CNTs realizes the excellent light absorption capacity and efficient photothermal conversion efficiency of the evaporator. Under the condition of 1 kW·m −2 light condition, the evaporation rate of CPAC-5 samples reached 1.73 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and the evaporation efficiency was as high as 99.73%. Moreover, beyond its efficient evaporation performance, the CPAC-5 evaporator also exhibits excellent purification capabilities for various industrial pollutants. The experimental results show that the evaporator can effectively purify heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ and Co 2+ ), organic dyes (MO, MB) and strong acid and alkaline industrial sewage. It is worth noting that the purified condensate can be used for the germination and growth of soybean and mung bean seeds, which verifies its practical feasibility in agricultural irrigation. This research provides new technical ideas for sustainable water treatment and agricultural irrigation driven by solar energy.

The silicon/carbon (Si/C) material is greatly expected to be the most potential anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Incorporating nanoscale Si with a suitable carbon matrix is desirable but remains challenging. Here, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified porous hard carbon (PCCN) is designed to carry Si nanoparticles (Si NPs), encapsulated with the outermost carbon layer to form the PCCN@SC material. DFT calculations reveal that the ordered lattice structure of CNTs facilitates the uniform deposition of Si NPs, suppressing the continuous growth of the particles and mitigating volume expansion ratios. The mechanical rigidity of PCCN is enhanced through CNT incorporation, effectively mitigating stress accumulation during lithiation and ensuring structural stability under cycling strain, which has been confirmed by theoretical simulations. Besides, the uniform pore distribution accelerates the transport of electrons and Li ions, thereby improving reaction kinetics through optimized ion diffusion pathways. As a result, the prepared PCCN@SC anode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, and the PCCN@SC||NCM811 full cell depicts a capacity retention of 86.9% after 110 cycles and achieves an ultrahigh rate of 8 C.

Efficient lithium polysulfides (LIPSs) conversion is essential for enhancing the kinetics and suppressing the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Metal tetraaminophthalocyanines (TaPcM), with abundant amino functional groups and stable metal-centered sites, exhibit remarkable catalytic activity and strong LIPSs adsorption capability in Li-S systems. In this study, nickel and copper atoms were individually anchored at the central coordination sites of tetraaminophthalocyanine (TaPc) molecules. The amino groups of TaPc served as branching points to establish chemical cross-linking bonds and π-π interactions with the surface of carbon nanotubes, thereby forming robust and stable cross-linking junctions. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that the as-designed S/TaPcNiCu/CNTs composite cathode delivers an impressive initial discharge capacity of 1139.7 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and retains 600.6 mAh g −1 after 500cycles at 1.0C, demonstrating excellent catalytic conversion of LIPSs and outstanding cycling stability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate the synergistic roles of Ni and Cu active centers in LIPSs adsorption and catalytic conversion. This work highlights the promising potential of bimetallic TaPc for Li-S cathode applications, paving a new pathway for advancing Li-S battery technologies.
