Due to their high persistence and ecotoxicity, developing a green and efficient approach to remove antibiotic residuals from aquatic environments becomes a challenging task. Efficient, visible light-active and reusable semiconductor photocatalyst is a promising solution to address this issue. In this work, Z-scheme CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructure photocatalysts were prepared by a hydrothermal method and the photocatalytic performance of as-prepared samples was evaluated by degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-H) under visible-light irradiation. The optimal performance was achieved for CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructure photocatalyst grown at 120 °C, which can decompose 78% TC-H after 30 min irradiation. The improved photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to synergistic effects including excellent visible-light absorption, efficient charge separation and relatively high redox potentials of electrons and holes associated with Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The possible degradation byproducts and stability of CdTe/TiO 2 heterostructures for TC-H degradation are also elucidated. This Z-scheme CdTe/TiO 2 photocatalysts may present a new strategy for degradation of antibiotics, providing an invaluable methodology for alleviation of aquatic environment pollution.

Ag + as one of the most commonly seen toxic heavy metal ions is involved in numerous vital biological processes, which would cause fatal damages and environmental contamination when Ag + is excessive. In the present work, CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with green, orange, and red emission capped by mercaptoacetic acid (TGA) were synthesized at one time by controlling the synthesis time and utilized for Ag + detection. Both fluorescence spectral red-shift and intensity decrease could be used for Ag + discrimination. Fluorescence lifetime , Zeta potential , and XRD, etc. were carried out to analyze the detection mechanism. Results displayed that surface passivation and electron transfer due to binding effects of Ag + to Te atom on traps of QDs could be relied on to explain the sensing mechanism. Additionally, in accordance with PCA analysis, Ag + could be also be successfully differentiated from Hg 2+ and the other metal ions. Importantly, a home-made portable device based on a 32 bit embed Micro Control Unit (MCU) system was first proposed for Ag + detection. The power supply system adopt the mini-sized lithium cell instead of the power supply system, which ensure its practical applicability. The relative position of light source and detector is set at 90° to minimize the interference. According to the detection results, the linear detection range using the device was from 5 nM to 200 nM (with a larger coefficient of determination, R 2 ), and the detection limit was calculated to be about 5 nM, which indicated that this proposed method and device could fulfil the practical application requirements.

Quantum dots luminescent films have great potential for application in lasers, optoelectronics , solid-state light-emitting diodes, and optical devices. This work describes multilayer ordered vermiculite-based luminescent thin films (VLFs) with 2D architecture via layer-by-layer assembly of PDDA-modified CdTe QDs on exfoliated vermiculite (VMT). The assembly of negative CdTe QDs and negative VMT was achieved, overcoming the nonluminance of solid CdTe QDs. The ordered VLFs possess periodic layered structures involving heterogeneous superlattices associated with individual VMT layers. The rational combination of luminescent components affords precise control of the emission wavelength and intensity, resulting in a gradual change in luminescence intensity in the selected light-emitting spectral region upon increasing the number of deposition cycles. Compared to the CdTe QDs, the fluorescence lifetime of VLFs is improved owing to the ordered structure. This work provides a facile approach to fabricate heterogeneous VLFs with high luminous properties and optical stability, which is expected to prevent easy aggregation of luminescent materials and can be potentially applied in light displays and multicolor optical and optoelectronic devices .

Owing to the high risk to human and environmental health , heavy metal pollution has become a global problem. Rapid, accurate and multiplexed determination of heavy metal ions is critical. In this work, we reported a promising approach to designing ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobes for multiplexed determination of Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Ag + ions. The nanoprobes (CDs-QDx) were designed by mixing the CDs and multicolor CdTe QDs without the involvement of recognition elements. The CDs were insensitive to heavy metal ions while CdTe QDs showed the size-dependent fluorescence response to different heavy metal ions, thereby establishing a ratiometric detection scheme by measuring the fluorescence intensity ratios of CDs-QDx systems. By evaluating the detection performance, the CDs-QDx (x = 570, 650, and 702) were successfully used for differentiation and quantification of Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Ag + ions. In addition, we also carried out the detection of heavy metal ions in actual samples with acceptable results. We believed that this work offers new insight into the design of ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe for multiplexed determination of not only heavy metals but also some other analytes by combining the CDs with CdTe QDs with fine-tuned sizes.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection inflicts significant economic and social burdens on many countries worldwide. Given the substantial morbidity and mortality from HIV infection, there is an urgent need for accurate and early detection of the virus. In this study, immunofluorescence and visual techniques are described that detect the HIV-1 p24 antigen, which relied on selective recognition of Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + using cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). After the sandwich immunoreactions were accomplished, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) hydrolyzed L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) to form ascorbic acid (AA) that further reduces Ag + and Cu 2+ to Ag NPs and Cu + , respectively. This method was highly sensitive and selective and could detect as low as 1 pg/mL of p24 antigen by naked eyes and had a good linearity in the concentration range 1–100 pg/mL. When using Ag + and Cu 2+ as media, the limit of detection (LOD) of the new method was 0.3 pg/mL and 0.2 pg/mL, respectively. Compared with clinical electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) results and clinical data, this method demonstrated good consistency for the quantification of HIV-1 p24 antigen in 34 clinical serum samples. In addition, this method could accurately distinguish HIV from other viruses and infections such as hepatitis B virus , systemic lupus erythematosus , hepatitis C virus , Epstein-Barr virus , cytomegalovirus , lipemia , and hemolysis . Therefore, our dual-mode analysis method may provide additional solutions to identify clinical HIV infection. Graphical abstract An immunofluorescence and visualization dual-mode strategy for the detection of p24 antigen was constructed based on immune recognition reaction and a phenomenon that cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) can selectively recognize Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + .

Nano-light materials have attracted great interest in materials research due to their excellent fluorescent properties. The hybrid assembly of various nano-optical materials combines their advantages, extending the scope of potential applications. Herein, we report a fluorescence organic–inorganic hybrid nanostructure (T-PNI@QDs) based on binding red-emitting CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to blue-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymeric micelles in aqueous media with dual-channel emission. The AIE-active polymeric micelles were obtained by the self-assembly of thiol-terminated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized poly(N-isopropylmethacylamide) (T-PNI-SH) in water. An interesting assembly behaviour of transformation from a worm-like to a core–shell structure was observed by controlling the ratio of QDs/polymers due to the coordinated interaction between the QDs and the thiol groups. The dual-emission of T-PNI@QDs has obvious temperature-sensitive behaviour on account of PNIPAM. The novel fluorescent hybrid nanostructure was used as a probe to selectively detect picric acid (PA) in pure water. We expect this work will open up a new perspective for the construction of organic–inorganic hybrids based on different nano-light materials.

Residues in animal food and drinking water caused by the abuse of antibiotics lead to cell resistance and many chronic diseases in the human body. Therefore, it has become an inevitable trend to develop a fast, easy-to-use, on-site/real-time visualization method for the detection of antibiotics. Herein, we report a dual-response ratiometric fluorescence sensor which is fabricated by chelating europium ions (Eu 3+ ) onto cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) for real-time and visible detection of tetracycline (TC). With the TC addition, the fluorescence of probe can be seen by the naked eye, from green to yellow and finally to red, exhibiting a dosage-sensitive and broad-chromatic detection strategy for TC. The fluorescence intensity ratio of I 616 /I 512 of Eu/CdTe QDs sensor displays a good linear relation to TC concentrations in the range of 0–80 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.2 nM. In addition, the sensor can visually detect 200 nM TC in actual samples, which is lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL) of the safety standard. The methodology reported here opens a window toward the real applications of fluorescent and shows the wide applicability in pursuing the concepts simple, rapid, visual, and real-time for food safety and environmental protection.

The composite of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with ZIF-8 was elaborately designed and synthesized as an enzyme-free fluorescent probe for the sensitive determination of uric acid (UA), based on the fluorescence detection property of CdTe QDs and the signal amplification function of ZIF-8. The structure and feature of the composite were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and fluorescence spectrometry. With adding UA to the composite, the emission of CdTe QDs reduced due to the inner filter and dynamic quenching effects of UA, and the adsorption ability of ZIF-8 toward UA promoted the response signal of CdTe QDs. On this basis, UA was quantified by the composite in the concentration range 0.05 to 10 μM with excitation/emission wavelength at 287/615 nm, and the detection limit of the composite toward UA was 32 nM. The reproducibility of the composite for determining UA was further evaluated, and the relative standard deviations were below 10.2%. The composite also exhibited the merits of enzyme-free analysis such as low testing cost, short analysis time (1 min), and loose pH condition (application in whole physiological pH range, 5.0 − 8.0). The composite was applied to the determination of UA in human urine with recoveries of spiked samples in the range 99 to 113%. Graphical abstract

This paper demonstrates a facile method to synthesize surface molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) on SiO 2 -coated CdTe QDs for selective detection of sulfadimidine (SM 2 ). The fluorescent MIP sensor was prepared using cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) as the material of fluorescent signal readout, sulfadimidine as template molecule, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as functional monomer and tetraethyloxysilane (TEOS) as cross-linking agent. The CdTe cores were embed in the silicon shells by a sol-gel reaction and then the molecular imprinting layers were immobilized on the surface of the SiO 2 -coated CdTe QDs. Under the optimized conditions, the relative fluorescent intensity weakened in a linear way with the increasing concentration of sulfadimidine in the range of 10–60 μmol L −1 . The practical application of the fluorescent MIP sensor was evaluated by means of analyzing sulfadimidine in the real milk samples. The recoveries were at the range of 90.3–99.6% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranged from 1.9 to 3.1%, which indicates the successful synthesis of the fluorescent MIP sensor. This sensor provides an alternative solution for selective determination of sulfadimidine from real milk samples.

A novel visual detection method was developed for silver using CdTe quantum dot (QD) immobilized paper. CdTe QDs were synthesized in aqueous solution by hydride generation (HG) for the first time, with H2Te gas being introduced into the aqueous medium containing Cd2+ ions. The gaseous precursor, H2Te, is generated on-line by reducing TeO32− with KBH4. The visible fluorescence from the CdTe QDs immobilized on paper was quenched by Ag+. A limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 μg mL−1 and a relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 7) of 2.1% at a concentration of 1 μg mL−1 of Ag+ were obtained when using a commercial fluorescence spectrophotometer as the detector. In visual detection, as low as 1 μg mL−1 of Ag+ in antibacterial textiles and drugs can be easily discriminated from the blank with the naked eye. The proposed method has several unique advantages, including straightforwardness, rapidness, affordability and requirement of no equipment for visual detection.

A novel fluorescence method was established for detecting sialic acid (SA) by using phenylboronic acid (PBA)-functionalized Fe3O4/CdTe magnetic nanoparticles as fluorescence probe. Initially, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were modified with amino groups, and then 3-mercapto propionic acid-stabilized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were covalently linked to the amino-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles to form Fe3O4/CdTe magnetic fluorescence nanoparticles. Finally, PBA was introduced on the surface of Fe3O4/CdTe to form PBA-functionalized Fe3O4/CdTe magnetic fluorescence nanoparticles. This kind of nanoparticle can specifically recognize SA and its fluorescence intensity is quenched by SA. In addition, the conjugate of the nanoparticles and SA is easy to separate from the sample matrix due to its magnetic properties. Therefore, this nanoparticle can be used as a fluorescence probe to detect SA. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the nano probe was found to be inversely linear with the concentration of SA in a wide range of 50 μg ml−1–1.50 mg ml−1, and the limit of detection was 16 μg ml−1. The PBA-functionalized Fe3O4/CdTe nano probe was applied to the determination of SA in infant formula, and the result showed high accuracy and precision. The PBA-functionalized Fe3O4/CdTe nano probe has the potential to be used to monitor SA in food.

A sensitive chemiluminescence (CL) sensor based on chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) in CdTe quantum dots@luminol (CdTe QDs@luminol) nanomaterials combined with chitosan/graphene oxide-magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer (Cs/GM-MIP) for sensing chrysoidine was developed. CdTe QDs@luminol was designed to not only amplify the signal of CL but also reduce luminol consumption in the detection of chrysoidine. On the basis of the abundant hydroxy and amino, Cs and graphene oxide were introduced into the GM-MIP to improve the adsorption ability. The adsorption capacities of chrysoidine by both Cs/GM-MIP and non-imprinted polymer (Cs/GM-NIP) were investigated, and the CdTe QDs@luminol and Cs/GM-MIP were characterized by UV–vis, FTIR, SEM and TEM. The proposed sensor can detect chrysoidine within a linear range of 1.0 × 10 − 7 - 1.0 × 10 − 5 mol/L with a detection limit of 3.2 × 10 − 8 mol/L (3 δ ) due to considerable chemiluminescence signal enhancement of the CdTe quantum dots@luminol detector and the high selectivity of the Cs/GM-MIP system. Under the optimal conditions of CL, the CdTe QDs@luminol-Cs/GM-MIP-CL sensor was used for chrysoidine determination in samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 90-107%.
