Hydrogels with intrinsic antimicrobial capabilities based on natural strategies have been studied as a hot topic in biomedicine. Nevertheless, it is highly challenging to thoroughly develop a bacteriostatic natural hydrogel. Borneol as a traditional Chinese medicine possesses a unique broad-spectrum antibacterial activity under a membrane-breaking mechanism. In this study, a range of fully natural antibacterial hydrogels are designed and synthesized via the Schiff base cross-linking of carboxymethyl chitosan and dialdehyde dextran grafted natural borneol. The borneol with three configurations is hydrophilically modified onto dextran to boost its antibacterial activity. Also, the synergism of hydrophilic-modified borneol groups and positively charged ammonium ions of carboxymethyl chitosan make the hydrogels totally constrict the E. coli and S. aureus growth during 24 h. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibit good in vitro cytocompatibility through cytotoxicity, protein adhesion, and hemolytic tests. In view of the injectability, the hydrogels can be delivered to the target site through a minimally invasive route. In short, this work offers a potential tactic to develop antibacterial hydrogels for the treatment of topical wound infections.

Sorption dehumidification, as an energy-saving and eco-friendly approach, has been emerging in application for air dehumidification. Here, a prospective method is proposed to prepare biomass-based hygroscopic aerogels that are easily applicable, sustainable, high-efficient, and recyclable. The chitosan-based aerogel with a porous and hydrophilic network acts as the carrier and water reservoir for the uniformly distributed lithium chloride hygroscopic salt, and provides the hygroscopic salt with more liberal water channels to facilitate moisture capture and transfer. As a consequence, the prepared chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol@lithium chloride (chitosan/PVA@LiCl) hygroscopic aerogel exhibits an excellent moisture absorption capacity of up to 2.77 g g −1 at a relative humidity of 90 %. Meanwhile, as the chitosan/PVA@LiCl aerogel is set in a closed space about 2200 times larger than its own volume, the relative humidity can be reduced from 90 % to 32 % within 2 h, and further lower to 25 % after 4 h. Furthermore, combined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes, the photothermal hygroscopic aerogel is obtained that can rapidly desorb water under sunlight, thus to realize energy-free cycle. Overall, the renewable biomass-based aerogel materials with the advantages of simple preparation and excellent hygroscopic performance provides a new path for the development of sorption dehumidification technology.

The work aims to study the effects of the mixing order of chitosan, gum Arabic and cinnamaldehyde and the concentration of cinnamaldehyde on the structure and functionality of complex particles. The results showed that non-covalent and Schiff base reactions occurred between cinnamaldehyde, chitosan and gum Arabic. When chitosan and gum Arabic (CS-GA-1:0.3) were mixed first, the complex particles were flat spherical and more compact and existed in aggregate state, with higher particle size, Zeta potential and wettability, and lower interfacial tension. When mixing cinnamaldehyde with chitosan or gum Arabic first (CS-CA-1:0.3 and GA-CA-1:0.3) and adding high concentration of cinnamaldehyde (CS-GA-1:0.9 and CS-GA-1:1.2), the structural compactness and morphological regularity of the complex particles got weakened, leading to the decrease in contact angle and increase in interfacial tension. All complex particles could be effectively used as Pickering emulsion stabilizers. When chitosan:cinnamaldehyde mass ratio reached 1:0.6 and below, the complex particles showed obvious antibacterial properties . The above results laid a foundation for the application of chitosan-based complex particles in the food and medical field.

Microencapsulation technology is a versatile approach that offers effective protection for core materials while also solving issues such as leakage and interface bonding. In this study, a simple yet efficient method for producing multifunctional fabric coatings has been proposed by utilizing chitosan/silica hybrid microcapsules. The synthesis of the microcapsules was achieved through a combination of the single condensation method and the sol-gel method. These microcapsules were specifically designed to encapsulate octadecane and paraffin. The microcapsules were structured with a core-shell configuration, and the shell was functionalized with both fluoroalkyl silane (FAS) and choline phosphate (CP) grafts. The resulting microcapsules were added to silicone resins to produce multifunctional fabric coatings. The desired coatings improved the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the fabrics, with a hydrophilic side contact angle of less than 10 ° and a hydrophobic side contact angle of up to 156 °. In addition, compared with untreated fabrics, coated fabrics can achieve a temperature difference of over 6 °C, demonstrating certain thermal insulation properties. Moreover, the coated fabric exhibits excellent antibacterial properties, with an inhibition rate of over 98% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The proposed method provides a promising solution for developing advanced multifunctional fabrics with enhanced properties. Graphical Abstract

Polymer gels are usually used for crystal growth as the recovered crystals have better properties. Fast crystallization under nanoscale confinement holds great benefits, especially in polymer microgels as its tunable microstructures. This study demonstrated that ethyl vanillin can be quickly crystallized from carboxymethyl chitosan/ethyl vanillin co-mixture gels via classical swift cooling method and supersaturation. It found that EVA appeared with bulk filament crystals accelerated by a large quantity of nanoconfinement microregions resulted from space-formatted hydrogen network between EVA and CMCS when their concentration exceeds 1:1.4 and may occasionally arise when the concentration less than 1:0.8. It was observed that EVA crystal growth has two models involving hang-wall growth at the air-liquid interface at the contact line, as well as extrude-bubble growth at any sites on the liquid surface. Further investigations found that EVA crystals can be recovered from as-prepared ion-switchable CMCS gels by 0.1 M hydrochloric acid or acetic acid without defects. Consequently, the proposed method may offer an available scheme for a large-scale preparation of API analogs. Keywords:EVA;CMCS;crystallization;nanoconfinement

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory immune and lubrication dysfunction disease that causes great damage to the joints. Herein, inspired by the unique biochemistry structure and excellent hydration of chondroitin sulfate (CHI) existing in joint system, one kind of novel polysaccharide nanoparticle lubricant, that is chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) grafting CHI (CS-CHI), is synthesized by one-step surface chemistry reaction. CHI with negative charges can form hydration layers on the surface of CS NPs, thus improving the lubricity of nanoparticles. Simultaneously, CS-CHI NPs have effective loading and sustained drug release ability for anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac sodium (DS), along with good biocompatibility. Finally, based on a collagen-induced rat RA model, in vitro animals experimental results indicate that the as-synthesized CS-CHI@DS NPs has obvious inhibitory effects on inflammatory factors and can effectively prevent the damaged cartilage from further destruction.

Stimulus-responsive injectable hydrogels with self-healing properties are promising materials for the delivery of bioactives owing to their protection of the payloads, minimally invasive procedures and site-specific administration. In this work, we report on a type of thermoresponsive dendronized chitosan-based (G1-CS) injectable hydrogel and its potential as scaffolds for stem cell delivery. G1-CS was synthesized through dendronization of chitosan with dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) to afford characteristic thermoresponsiveness, and its further crosslinking through dynamic covalent Schiff-base chemistry generated the hydrogels. The mechanical properties of the obtained hydrogels are weak with a storage modulus around 0.2 kPa at room temperature, which can be significantly improved to about 1.4 kPa at 37 °C. This feature comes remarkably from thermally induced aggregation and a simultaneously enhanced Schiff-base reaction in an aqueous phase, resulting in promoted crosslinking of the hydrogel network and immediate gelation under physiological conditions. The Schiff-base linkage also endows the hydrogels with shear-thinning and self-healing properties, which facilitate the injection process of the hydrogels and maintenance of their stability. G1-CS hydrogels were examined to encapsulate stem cells. After long term (14 days) culture, the cells exhibited high viability and well maintained their differentiation potential. We therefore believe that hydrogels from this dendronized chitosan, featuring biocompatibility, thermoresponsiveness, self-healing ability, and enhanced mechanical properties, can serve as promising scaffolds for drug delivery and tissue engineering.

Bacterial cellulose is an attractive material due to its outstanding biocompatibility, nanometer size and high purity, but the difficulty of dispersing has restricted its wide applications. In this study, chitosan was grafted onto bacterial cellulose by Schiff base reaction, and then obtained the nano-sized fibrils by ultrasonic dispersion process. Different concentrations of NaIO 4 with various time and temperature were applied, and the maximum grafting amount of chitosan was 12.38%. The obtained products were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. From the dispersibility and stability behavior research, the suspension containing chitosan was more uniform and showed better acid and temperature stability. It can also be observed in SEM and TEM images that the bacterial cellulose were dispersed into single ones and the diameter of the isolated fibril was 30–80 nm.

Elastic carbon materials with high compressibility are ideal candidates for flexible piezoresistive sensors. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising nanoblocks for fabricating compressible and elastic carbon aerogels because of their excellent conductivity and mechanical strength. However, insufficient interaction among CNTs makes them difficult to assemble in an elastic macrostructure. Herein, a facile yet effective method was proposed to fabricate a compressible and elastic carbon aerogel from multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using chitosan as a binder. The biopolymer can link MWCNTs into continuous lamellas and lead to three-dimensional architectures with excellent structural stability. The carbon aerogel can withstand a high compression strain (90%) and exhibits excellent fatigue resistance, with only 8% plastic deformation after 50 000 cycles at 50% strain. It also shows a high resistance stability after 50 000 compression cycles and good sensitivity (4.45 kPa–1) and can detect human biological signals. Satisfactory mechanical and sensing properties enable its application in wearable piezoresistive sensors.

Fabrication of nitric oxide (NO) donors with good biocompatibility and high NO loading efficiency for antibacterial applications remains a big challenge. In the present work, using low molecular weight chitosan (CS) with high water solubility as the backbone, we designed and synthesized a poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendron-grafted CS using a fast and simple copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cyclization reaction of azide-modified CS (CS-N 3 ) and propargyl focal point PAMAM dendrons with the third generation. NO was loaded on CS-PAMAM via a reaction with its secondary amine groups, which resulted in the formation of CS-PAMAM/NONOate with a maximal NO loading amount of 1.7 μmoL/mg. The CS-PAMAM/NONOate showed significant antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus , where 2.5 mg of CS-PAMAM/NONOate showed an inhibition zone with a diameter of about 20 mm. Moreover, the CS-PAMAM/NONOate presented negligible toxicity on normal mouse embryonic fibroblast cells, suggesting excellent biocompatibility. These findings indicate that the prepared CS-PAMAM/NONOate is promising for use in wound dressing industry as wound healing and treatment of anti-bacterial infections.
