CO2-induced phase separation in ionic liquid aqueous solutions: enhancing CO2 storage capacity in CO2 flooding

Xingyu Lin,Hongsheng Lu,Ruoxin Zhang,Ziteng Yang,Yingjiang Chen,Baiwen Huang

CO 2 flooding offers dual benefits by enhancing oil recovery and facilitating CO 2 storage. However, reservoir heterogeneity and clay swelling can significantly limit CO 2 storage capacity. Here, a novel strategy for in-situ formation of particle profile control agent and clay swelling inhibitor was established by CO 2 -responsive ionic liquids (ILs). Two fatty acid (FA)-based ILs were synthesized by reacting N, N -dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA) with myristic acid (C14) and palmitic acid (C16). After CO 2 injection, FA was precipitated again as a particle profile control agent with a particle size exceeding 10.65 μm, while the protonated DMCHA in the remaining liquid phase serves as a clay swelling inhibitor. Notably, the precipitation of FA within the core increases the CO 2 storage capacity by 1.96 times. This innovative approach holds great promise for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of CO 2 injection, benefiting both the petroleum industry and environmental protection.

Reversibly Phase-Transformative Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-108 and the Membrane Separation Utility

Yingwu Zhou,Yujie Ban,Weishen Yang

Reversible phase transformations (RPTs) of metal–organic frameworks not only create material diversity but also promise a self-restoration of crystals in a controllable manner. However, there are only limited examples because seeking for a convenient and effective trigger for RPTs, especially for RPTs with respect to spatiotemporal harmony in cleavage and reconstruction of metal–linker chemical bonds, is challenging. In this work, we found that zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-108 with Zn–N coordination bonds showing moderate strength was an ideal platform. We reported three crystal phases of ZIF-108, namely, sodalite (SOD), diamondoid (DIA), and large pore_sodalite (lp_SOD) topologies, and identified RPTs between phases: (1) when exposed to water or water vapor, the SOD structure could transform to a compact DIA version as a result of the decomposition of four-membered rings and synchronous reorganization of six-membered rings. Then, the DIA structure could also return back to SOD when soaked in dimethylformamide (DMF) or DMF vapor. (2) High-temperature treatment of SOD gives rise to lp_SOD, which then reverts to SOD by DMF. (3) lp_SOD could also be compressed into the DIA phase by water or water vapor and can then be restored via a two-step treatment, namely, soaking in DMF (DIA → SOD) right before a high-temperature therapy (SOD → lp_SOD). From the perspective of the separation utility, we found that the lp_SOD version of ZIF-108, relative to SOD-structured ZIF-108, can produce mixed matrix membranes having an interesting interfacial structure with the polymer chains, though both share the same chemical composition. We verified that the large pore of lp_SOD can allow being penetrated by polymer chains, which contributed to not only reinforcing the bi-phase interface but also sharpening the molecule sieve properties of fillers toward CO2 and CH4.

Porous Membrane-Mediated CO2 Delivery for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Hongyu Sun,Fuju Qi,Zilong Zhou,Jianquan Luo,Hao Zhang,Wei Wei,Weijie Song,Yinhua Wan

Microenvironment engineering offers a promising route to overcome CO2 mass transport limitations in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, constructing a robust gas–liquid–solid triple-phase boundary (TPB) and ensuring continuous and sufficient CO2 supply at a high current density remain challenging. Here, a poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP)-modified macroporous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane, serving as both a gas–liquid distributor and a localized CO2 reservoir, is assembled on the bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) electrocatalyst. The superhydrophobic PTFE membrane provides gas-filled highways for rapid CO2 transport, while the CO2-affinitive P4VP maintains a high local free CO2 concentration near the electrode, jointly ensuring a sufficient CO2 supply and a stable TPB. The resulting electrode achieves a maximum formic acid (HCOOH) partial current density of 31.13 mA cm–2. The HCOOH Faradaic efficiency (FEHCOOH) is up to 90.45% at −1.1 V in the H-cell. Moreover, it sustains a stable reaction over 27 h, markedly surpassing the durability of the unmodified electrode. In addition, its FEHCOOH remains above 80% over a broad potential range from −0.55 V to −1 V and reaches 92.9% at a constant current density of 150 mA·cm–2 in a flow cell. This work provides a novel approach to overcome the limited access of CO2 in the CO2RR.

Enhanced CO2 injection and hydrate conversion in unsealed submarine sediments for CO2 hydrate sequestration by CO2-H2O emulsion injection

Hong-Nan Chen,Yi-Fei Sun,Ming-Long Wang,Jin-Rong Zhong,Dan Rao,Chang-Yu Sun,Guang-Jin Chen

CO 2 hydrate provides an important alternative solution for CO 2 geological sequestration. However, fingering flow of liquid CO 2 and hydrate membrane effect can severely restrict flowing CO 2 conversion to hydrate. Here we report an enhanced CO 2 hydrate sequestration method via CO 2 -H 2 O emulsion injection, and its effectiveness has been proven in a three-dimensional system. Compared to liquid injection, emulsion injection demonstrated higher displacement efficiency of pore water and larger sweep area, finally increasing CO 2 sequestration density by 142 %. The highly dispersed CO 2 micro-droplets significantly increase CO 2 -H 2 O contact capability and weakens the hydrate membrane effect, thereby greatly increasing the rate and quantity of hydrate conversion. For different water contents, the highest CO 2 sequestration density of 148 kg/m 3 is achieved at 40 % water content, with hydrated CO 2 accounting for 71.45 %. The excellent performance of CO 2 -H 2 O emulsion provides a green and high-efficient approach to CO 2 hydrate sequestration.

Sunlight-controlled CO2 separation resulting from a biomass-based CO2 absorber

Shiming Zhang,Qianhao Pan,Yapei Wang

Renewable solid sorbents for CO 2 capture and storage have shown great potentials for the sake of gaseous separation, tail gas treatment, environmental regulation and climate governance. However, current existed preparation and reusability of solid sorbents are generally subject to high energy consumption and complicated procedure. Herein, a light-controlled CO 2 separation system with high working temperature resulting from natural sawdust combined with polyethyleneimine is fabricated, which involves low energy input and few operating sequences. This system shows a direct and ratiometric response to sunlight illumination by which CO 2 can be reversibly adsorbed and released. This light-controlled CO 2 separation process is prospective to become an attractive alternative to traditional alkaline CO 2 collection method in terms of its convenience and low cost. As a practical demonstration, CO 2 mixed with N 2 is successfully separated through this light-controlled carbon capture and storage (CCS) system, which offers great promise for CO 2 capture and enrichment with applicability across a wide range of scales.

SO42− mediated CO2 activation on metal electrode for efficient CO2 electroreduction

Yongxiao Tuo,Wanli Liu,Qing Lu,Xingzhao Wang,Jiabing Luo,Shutao Wang,Yan Zhou,Min Wang,Xiaohui Sun,Xiang Feng,Mingbo Wu,De Chen,Jun Zhang

The most difficulty of efficient CO 2 electroreduction lies in the activation step that turns CO 2 into the CO 2 − radicals or other intermediates that can be further converted. To overcome this bottleneck, many efforts have been devoted to develop electrocatalysts to lower the overpotential of CO 2 activation, but they inevitably involve complicated or/and unscalable synthesis methods. Here we reported that the SO 4 2− ion modified metal foils, including Zn, Ag, Au and Cu, demonstrated ∼6.5, 1.4, 14 and 2.5 times of CO faradaic efficiency in K 2 SO 4 electrolyte compared to KHCO 3 electrolyte at −1.05 V vs. RHE. According to both experimental and DFT studies, the electron-rich metal-SO 4 adlayer can activate CO 2 by bending the linear molecule of CO 2 through donating electrons to the antibonding orbital of CO 2 , thus facilitating the formation of key intermediate *CO 2 − . Moreover, the adsorption of H + on metal sites is restrained by the metal-SO 4 adlayer, leading to a suppressed H 2 evolution activity. From a broader perspective, many catalysts can benefit from this approach to achieve more efficient CO 2 electrochemical reduction.

CO2/N2-Responsive Nanoparticles for Enhanced Oil Recovery During CO2 Flooding

Lai Nanjun,Zhu Qingru,Qiao Dongyu,Chen Ke,Wang Dongdong,Tang Lei,Chen Gang

During CO2 flooding, serious gas channeling occurs in ultra-low permeability reservoirs due to the high mobility of CO2. The chief end of this work was to research the application of responsive nanoparticles for mobility control to enhance oil recovery. Responsive nanoparticles were developed based on the modification of nano-silica (SiO2) by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (KH540) via the Eschweiler-Clark reaction. The proof of concept for responsive nanoparticles was investigated by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, TEM, DLS, CO2/N2 response, wettability, plugging performance, and core flooding experiments. The results indicated that responsive nanoparticles exhibited a good response to control nanoparticle dispersity due to electrostatic interaction. Subsequently, responsive nanoparticles showed a better plugging capacity of 93.3% to control CO2 mobility, and more than 26% of the original oil was recovered. Moreover, the proposed responsive nanoparticles could revert oil-wet surfaces to water-wet, depending on surface adsorption to remove the oil from the surface of the rocks. The results of this work indicated that responsive nanoparticles might have potential applications for improved oil recovery in ultra-low permeability reservoirs.

Supramolecular Metal–Organic Framework for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 Separation

Juanjuan Dai,Danyan Xie,Ying Liu,Zhiguo Zhang,Yiwen Yang,Qiwei Yang,Qilong Ren,Zongbi Bao

Supramolecular metal–organic frameworks (SMOFs) are emerging as a new family of porous materials. In this work, a SMOF, [Cu2(ade)4(H2O)2](SiF6)2 (SMOF-SIFSIX-1, ade = adenine) was successfully synthesized from the cationic complex of copper and adenine and hexafluorosilicate anions by a slow diffusion method and was demonstrated for trapping carbon dioxide in preference to methane and nitrogen. With one-dimensional pores of about 3.6 × 3.6 Å to induce their distinguishing interactions with the three components, SMOF-SIFSIX-1 exhibited excellent selective gas sorption behaviors for CO2/CH4 (50:50) and CO2/N2 (15:85) gas mixtures with ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivities of 21.1 and 131.7 at 273 K and 100 kPa pressure, respectively, outperforming most of reported hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks so far. Neutron powder diffraction and DFT-D calculations were also carried out to investigate the CO2 adsorption configuration on SMOF-SIFSIX-1a, which suggested that this framework catch CO2 due to “C···F” and “O···H” supramolecular interactions between CO2 molecules and SMOF-SIFSIX-1a. This study demonstrates that the rarely studied SMOF material shows promising potential in gas adsorption separation.

A CO2-responsive hydrogel film for optical sensing of dissolved CO2

Ruiqin Wang,Mengxin Zhang,Ying Guan,Mao Chen,Yongjun Zhang

CO2-monitoring plays an important role in medicine, environmental sciences, and food industries. Here, a new CO2-responsive hydrogel film was fabricated from branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and partially oxidized dextran (PO-Dex) via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly, based on the in situ Schiff base reaction between the two polymers. The swelling behaviours of the films were studied using Fabry–Perot fringes on their reflection spectra. Like ordinary hydrogels, the BPEI/PO-Dex films swell in water. In addition, they swell to a larger degree when CO2 is introduced, due to the reaction between CO2 and the amino groups in BPEI. The CO2-induced swelling can be reported by the shift of the Fabry–Perot fringes on their reflection spectra; therefore, the BPEI/PO-Dex film can be used as an optical sensor for dissolved CO2. In the new sensor, the BPEI/PO-Dex film acts as a CO2-sensing material and Fabry–Perot cavity simultaneously. The introduction of ordered structure is no longer required. The response of the sensor to CO2 is linear and reversible. Unlike other hydrogel-based sensors that suffer from a slow response, the new sensor can respond to CO2 quickly, making it applicable for real-time, continuous monitoring of CO2 levels in solution.

Effective CO2 activation of enriched oxygen vacancies for photothermal CO2 methanation

Peipei Du,Guoqiang Deng,Zhonghua Li,Junchuan Sun,Lu Wang,Yongqiang Yang,Jun Wang,Yaguang Li,Xiaoming Xu,Yuanming Zhang,Wangxi Liu,Gang Liu,Zhigang Zou,Zhaosheng Li

Oxygen vacancies have been widely concerned with the facilitation effects of CO 2 activation for CO 2 methanation. However, little attention has been paid to the generation of active intermediate species induced by enriched oxygen vacancies. Herein, we discovered that CeNiO 3− δ catalyst enriched oxygen vacancies can efficiently activate CO 2 and realize high activity for photothermal CO 2 methanation. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) proved that oxygen vacancies are beneficial to the formation of reactive intermediate species of polydentate carbonate over CeNiO 3− δ , which is crucial for efficient CO 2 methanation. These results revealed mechanistic insights into how effective CO 2 activation induced by oxygen vacancies can be manipulated by adjusting the adsorption intermediate species.

TiO2 hybrid material film with high CO2 adsorption for CO2 photoreduction

Zhengfeng Huang,Kaiming Xue,Yanzhao Zhang,Xudong Cheng,Peimei Dong,Xiwen Zhang

To integrate the CO 2 capture and photoreduction processes into a single system, MOFs-derived TiO 2 was loaded onto polyethersulfone (PES) or polyethylenimine (PEI)/PES electrospun mats using electrospray method. The mats incorporated with PEI has exhibited excellent CO 2 capture capacity and MOFs-derived TiO 2 doped with C (denoted as C/TiO 2 ) extended the absorption edge to >400 nm. The introduction of PEI that resulted in the C/TiO 2 -PEI/PES sample has significantly increased the CO 2 photoreduction yield by 81% when compared to C/TiO 2 -PES sample. The C/TiO 2 -PEI/PES sample could still capture and convert CO 2 into CO even in the low CO 2 atmosphere.

CO2-Responsive Foam (CRF) for Mitigating CO2 Channeling in Heterogenous Reservoirs

Qi Gao,Xingguang Xu,Shuai Liu,Athumani Omari Mmbuji,Yunkun Wu

CO2 foam has been identified as having significant applications in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS). This is attributed to its proven capability to mitigate channeling during CO2 injection effectively; meanwhile, the majority of injected CO2 can be safely stored in reservoirs through geo-sequestration. However, the high injection pressure and poor foam stability severely affect the wide employment of CO2 foam flooding. In this study, comprehensive investigations on a novel CO2-responsive foam (CRF) with desirable injectivity and noticeable longevity are presented. This novel foam system employs lauryl ether sulfate sodium (LES) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as foaming agents, and it exhibits notable reversible CO2-responsive properties. This property enables the fluid to transit between low and high-viscosity states, enhancing foam injection performance and reducing the injection pressure. CRF is less detrimental to reservoirs compared to conventional polymer-enhanced foam (PEF) due to its ability to switch between gel-forming and gel-breaking phases using CO2/N2. In addition, rheological tests demonstrate that CRF exhibits superior high shear tolerance compared to PEF. Moreover, CRF shows greater stability and higher salt resistance compared to PEF. At a NaCl concentration of 5 × 104 mg/L, the half-life of CRF (152 min) was nearly 13 times longer than that of PEF (11 min). It is noted that CRF exhibits a higher resistance factor in high-permeability cores compared to low-permeability cores, indicating its outstanding capacity to block the channels and mitigate CO2 breakthrough. The results of the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) experiments indicated that CRF is capable of displacing more oil than PEF in fractured cores with identical experimental conditions. It is believed that CRF may be applied as a viable CCUS technique and may enlighten investigations on novel CCUS strategies.
