Effect of CoFe2O4 content in iron-cobalt bimetallic catalysts on the activity of methane decomposition for hydrogen production

Yichi Zhang,Jingang Zhang,Dongping Sun,Jean-Marie Basset,Jingxia Qian,Lu Zhou

This study employed nonahydrate ferric nitrate and hexahydrate cobalt nitrate as precursors to fabricate catalysts via calcination, varying the iron-cobalt molar ratios (1: 5, 3: 4, 1: 1, 4: 3, 5: 1). It identified the optimal ratio for catalytic decomposition of methane (CDM) performance. Furthermore, adjusting the calcination temperature enabled control over the spinel content in catalysts with the optimal Fe: Co ratio (3: 4), resulting in a range of single and bimetallic catalysts with diverse spinel contents. Comparative analysis revealed the superior performance of bimetallic catalysts compared to single-metal counterparts. Specifically, under the conditions of 800 °C and GHSV 6 L/(g cat. ·h), Fe 3 Co 4 -700 °C achieved a maximum methane conversion of 75.6%, after maintaining a CDM test for 6 h, there is no decrease in stability. This is because the synergistic effect of Fe and Co bimetallic in the Fe 3 Co 4 -700 °C catalyst facilitates the transfer of charges between the bimetals, alters the surface charge density of the catalyst, enhances the electron donation capability of active sites, thereby favoring the adsorption and cracking processes of methane. XRD indicates that this catalyst with smaller crystallite size benefits the dispersion of catalytic active sites, thus improving the CDM performance. Results underscored the significant impacts of calcination temperature and metal ratio on the catalyst's spinel content and crystallite size. Characterization of spent catalysts unveiled carbon products primarily comprising carbon nano-onions, graphite, and carbon nanotubes, with the optimal catalyst yielding 5.8 g C /g cat. . Increasing calcination temperatures facilitated the formation of the spinel phase. At 150 °C, the Fe: Co (3: 4) catalyst had minimal spinel content, whereas at 300 °C, 700 °C, and 1000 °C, the contents are 9%, 11%, and 24%, respectively. Notably, at 1500 °C, the spinel content dramatically surged to 62%. The relationship between spinel content and spent catalyst crystallite size is not linear, the smaller crystal size is more conducive to the dispersion of catalytic active sites, thereby improving the CDM performance. Catalysts without spinel doping exhibited a crystallite size of around 32.2 nm, which decreased to 25.6 nm with 11% spinel content, and increased to 42.7 nm with 62% content. These findings yield profound insights into the influence of calcination temperature and iron cobalt ratios on catalyst performance, providing valuable guidance for the production of efficient CDM catalysts.

CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles Coated with Mesoporous Silica and Loaded with Naringin and Levofloxacin for Repair of Infectious Bone Defects

Wei Xiong,Yuxiang Zhou,Xiaolin Shi,Chaoyi Liang,Wenfang Deng,Lingmei Yuan,Guowen Qian,Cijun Shuai,Zhikui Zeng

The treatment of infective bone defects remains a considerable challenge for orthopedic surgeons, primarily due to the complexities of infection control and the unsatisfactory healing of bone tissue. To solve this challenge, we have designed core/shell nanoparticles to loaded with antibacterial and osteogenic agents. Specifically, magnetocaloric CoFe2O4 (CF) nanoparticles loaded with naringin (NG) and coated with mesoporous silica (MS) were developed to construct NG-CF@MS nanoparticles. Subsequently, levofloxacin (LEV) was loaded into the MS coating, yielding NG-CF@MS-LEV nanoparticles capable of dual drug delivery. These nanoparticles were then incorporated into poly l-lactide (PLLA) powder to fabricate magnetically responsive scaffolds, which demonstrated enhanced osteogenesis and antibacterial activity under alternating magnetic field (AMF) conditions. Drug release studies showed a significant increase in NG and LEV release efficiency in the AMF setting, with a 337% increase in NG release and a 196% increase in LEV compared to non-AMF conditions. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that NG-CF@MS-LEV/PLLA scaffolds exhibited excellent osteogenic and antibacterial properties. Under the intervention of the AMF, the scaffolds displayed antibacterial rates of 98.67% and 99.38% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Moreover, the scaffolds significantly promoted osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (mBMSCs), highlighting their potential as a promising therapeutic approach for repair of infected bone defects.

Microstructure of porous network CoFe2O4@Co3O4/CNT based on zeolitic imidazolate framework as electrode materials for supercapacitors application

Ding Xiaojun,Liu Dingbang,Wang Zihao,Peng Yilin,Fu Shuqi,Zhan Na,Jiang Qing,Li Mingyang,Wan Haiyang,Liu Jiansheng,Zhao Xinsheng,Gao Fei,Zhou Weiping,Cheng Zhenzhi,Wu Zhongkai,Luo Guangsheng

Transition metal oxides (TMOs), especially spinel-type iron oxides, are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high specific capacitance. However, as a kind of pseudocapacitive electrode material, transition metal oxide undergoes volume changes during the charge–discharge process, leading to a decrease in its cycling stability. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as a common carbon-based material, exhibit excellent cycling stability. In this study, we have successfully synthetized CoFe 2 O 4 @Co 3 O 4 /CNT by utilizing zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) as a template. The resultant material exhibits a porous network architecture and the synthesized material was subsequently utilized as an electrode in supercapacitor applications, exhibiting a remarkable specific capacitance of 641 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The stability of the electrode were evidenced by its ability to retain 62.3% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles at the high current density of 10 A g −1 , indicating its potential for long-term energy storage applications.

Waste self-heating bag derived CoFe2O4 composite enhances peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance, mechanism, and adaptability under high-salinity conditions

Zhian Jin,Xuanting Zhao,Min Zhang,Ying Li,Jing Guo,Yeqing Lan,Cheng Chen

In order to achieve the environmental goal of waste treatment by waste, waste self-heating bags, a common household waste rich in iron oxide , activated carbon, and vermiculite , were reutilized as the raw material for the one-pot fabrication of a CoFe 2 O 4 composite (CoFe 2 O 4 -CV). The performance, mechanism, and application potential of CoFe 2 O 4 -CV for high-salinity wastewater remediation were investigated. The results indicated that the presence of activated carbon and vermiculite promoted the dispersion of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles , which enhanced the catalytic performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. At a concentration of 0.1 g/L CoFe 2 O 4 -CV and 0.5 mmol/L PMS, > 99% of RhB was eliminated within 15 min. CoFe 2 O 4 -CV also exhibited splendid recyclability due to its strong magnetism and stability. Quenching experiments and spectroscopic studies showed that dissolved free sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), surface-bound SO 4 •- (≡SO 4 •- ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and high-valence metal-oxo species (≡Co(IV)=O/≡Fe(IV)=O) jointly contributed to RhB degradation. Non-radical pathways involving ≡SO 4 •- , 1 O 2 , and ≡Co(IV)=O/≡Fe(IV)=O also played a crucial role. Moreover, ion competition experiments indicated that the CoFe 2 O 4 -CV activated PMS system showed anti-interference ability towards humic acid and high-concentration anions. Thus, the CoFe 2 O 4 -CV/PMS system achieved the effective removal of RhB and other dye contaminants under high-salinity conditions. This work demonstrates the practical possibility of waste reutilization treating high-salinity wastewater based on an advanced oxidation process .

Photoelectrochemical cell with Co3O4/BiVO4 photoanode and CoFe2O4 cathode: An efficient persulfate activation system for organic pollutants degradation

Xuanran Geng,RenFu Zhang,Peiyun Zhang,Xiaoying Yuan,Can Yang,Yidong Hou,Jinshui Zhang,Meirong Huang

The integration of photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology with persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes has emerged as a promising approach for efficient pollutant removal in environmental remediation. Herein, we developed a novel PEC system combining a Co 3 O 4 /BiVO 4 (CO/BVO) photoanode with a CoFe 2 O 4 /carbon paper (CFO/CP) cathode for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward bisphenol A (BPA) removal. The enhanced photogenerated charge separation in CO/BVO and the PMS activation by CFO/CP in the PEC system enabled complete BPA degradation within 60 minutes under optimized conditions (1.0 V bias, 1.0 mM PMS). The influence of PMS concentration, applied bias, pH, and coexisting anions on BPA degradation was thoroughly investigated. Radical scavenging experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance analysis identified •SO 4 - , •OH, and photogenerated holes as dominant reactive species. The system also exhibited good stability over five consecutive cycles, with minimal metal ion leaching. This work demonstrates the potential of an efficient PEC system integrated with sulfate radical-based AOPs, offering an innovative approach for organic pollutant remediation in wastewater treatment.

Enhanced dielectric polarization loss of CoFe2O4/CeO2 @ amorphous carbon sponge-structured nanocomposites enables high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption

Xinyang Liu,Fengyu Wu,Tongbo Zhang,Fenyang Tian,Menggang Li,Weiwei Yang,Yongsheng Yu

The multi-interface structure plays a crucial role in facilitating the effectiveness of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption in nanomaterials. However, designing and fine-tuning such structure remain challenging due to the limited understanding of the relationship between structural characteristics and dielectric loss properties. Herein, we present a sponge-structured dual-core @ shell CoFe 2 O 4 /CeO 2 @C nanocomposite featuring abundant heterojunctions and robust dielectric-magnetic coupling networks. This design aims to attain excellent impedance matching and significantly enhance EMW absorption performance of the nanocomposite. Specifically, CoFe 2 O 4 /CeO 2 @C nanocomposite achieves an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.13 GHz with a thickness of merely 2.2 mm. The exceptional EMW absorption performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of multi-loss mechanisms, including interfacial polarization induced by the porous dual-core @ shell structure, oxygen vacancy defects arising from the intrinsic structural characteristics of CeO 2 and conductive loss brought by reversible migration of Co 2+ /Fe 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ . This study offers a robust strategy for the advancement of ferrite-based composites with enhanced dielectric properties and offers novel insights for the design of broadband EMW absorbing materials.

Catalyzing the metabolism through CoFe2O4 magnetic photocatalyst for photo fermentative biohydrogen production: Selectivity and recyclability across diverse strains

Muhammad Usman,Faiqa Nadeem,Hina Ramzan,Muneeb ur Rahman,Fuhua Shen,Muhammad Shahzaib,Reeta Rani Singhania,Anil Kumar Patel,Zhiping Zhang,Shengyong Liu,Nadeem Tahir

The interaction between the photo-induced charges from photo nanocatalysts (PNCs) and biohydrogen production strains plays a key role in controlling the metabolism mechanism in fermentative biohydrogen production from lignocellulosic biomass wastes. Thus, in the present study, two strains of Rhodopseudomonas palustris (PNSB) and a mixed consortium of HAU-M1 were evaluated for their biohydrogen production potential from corn stover (CS), whereas metabolism was catalyzed through photo-induced electrons from magnetic PNCs of cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ). The threshold concentration of CoFe 2 O 4 (400 mg/L) produced 428.62 mL and 373.30 mL biohydrogen in PNSB and HAU-M1, which is 129.0 % and 81.12 % higher as compared to respective control groups (CGs), respectively. The presence of PNCs provides the photo-induced electrons, which catalyze the metabolic processes as butyric acid increases by 96.29 % and 94.87 % in PNSB and HAU-M1, respectively, hence increasing hydrogen production. The results were supported by microbial community investigation, which showed that the incorporation of the appropriate concentration of PNCs effectively changes the bacterial community dynamics and diversifies the phyla ( Firmicutes , Proteobacteria , and Bacteroidetes ) and hydrogen-producing genus Clostridium . The recovered yield of CoFe 2 O 4 PNCs from PNSB and HAU-M1 fermentative mediums in three consecutive cycles was (90.87 %, 88.94 %), (80.25 %, 72.25 %), and (69.75 %, 60.80 %) respectively showing potential for recycling catalysts during the fermentation process. Thus, selecting the right photocatalysts and strain can affect metabolism and biohydrogen production, while recyclability reduces environmental leaching.

Qi Liu,Ming-Dan Yao,Zi-Long Yang,Fu-Gui Yang,Zhe Feng,Ji Cai-Rang,Yu-Long Xie

ZIF-8-derived ZnO/CoFe 2 O 4 removes 99.12% ciprofloxacin in 6 min under visible light. • Type II band alignment drives directional electron transfer, suppressing carrier recombination. • Dual-channel PMS activation via photoelectron reduction and Co/Fe redox cycling. • Over 99% efficiency retained after five cycles in actual surface water and groundwater. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics in aquatic environments threaten ecosystems and human health by spreading antimicrobial resistance. This study synthesized a magnetically recoverable ZnO/CoFe 2 O 4 heterojunction using ZIF-8-derived porous ZnO as substrate via solvothermal method. The optimized composite achieved 99.12% ciprofloxacin removal within 6 min under visible light with peroxymonosulfate. XPS evidence supports Type II heterojunction formation with directional electron transfer with directional electron transfer from ZnO to CoFe 2 O 4 . A dual-channel PMS activation mechanism is proposed involving direct PMS reduction by photogenerated electrons and SO 4 ⁻ generation through Co 2 ⁺/Co 3 ⁺ and Fe 2 ⁺/Fe 3 ⁺ redox cycles. EPR identified 1 O 2 and SO 4 ⁻ as dominant reactive species. The catalyst maintained excellent stability with over 99% efficiency after five cycles. LC-MS revealed piperazine ring cleavage, decarboxylation and defluorination pathways leading to deep oxidative degradation. This work provides an efficient strategy for antibiotic wastewater treatment using magnetically separable photocatalysts with synergistic photo-oxidation and persulfate activation capabilities. Heterojunction-engineered two-dimensional Ti3C2–CoFe2O4 nanozyme with oxidase-like activity for SERS detection of glutathione in human serum

Huiqi Zhu,Ying Chen,Weiqing Yang,Zunxiang Zeng,Yuling Hu,Ji Zhang

The inherently weak Raman signals from molecules with small scattering cross-sections pose a significant challenge for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a technique that is further limited by its reliance on costly precious metal substrates and exogenous labeling strategies. To address these limitations, this study constructs a Ti3C2–CoFe2O4 heterostructure by anchoring oxidase (OXD)-like CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on two-dimensional (2D) conductive Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. The resulting interface forms a Mott–Schottky junction, which facilitates rapid charge transfer and synergistically enhances both catalytic and SERS performance. Structurally, the 2D Ti3C2 framework provides abundant anchoring sites for the uniform dispersion of CoFe2O4 NPs. This effectively prevents particle aggregation and maximizes the exposure of catalytic active sites, thereby enhancing both stability and catalytic activity. Additionally, the Ti3C2–CoFe2O4 heterojunction effectively suppresses the recombination of charge carriers and promotes the separation of photogenerated charges, generating abundant superoxide anion radicals that oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for catalytic signal amplification. Therefore, the ingenious combination of nanozymes and SERS technology enables the generation of SERS-active reporters via nanozyme-catalyzed reactions, thus avoiding the need for external labeling modifications. The strategy simultaneously enhances Raman signals through the synergistic effect of photoinduced charge transfer and localized surface plasmon resonance. This Ti3C2–CoFe2O4 heterojunction exhibits integrated OXD-like activity and SERS enhancement, enabling sensitive glutathione (GSH) detection in human serum samples. Through catalytic oxidation of TMB to oxidized TMB, a distinct Raman peak emerges at 1615 cm−1, with its intensity reduction quantitatively correlating with GSH concentration via competitive reactive oxygen species scavenging. Quantitative analysis demonstrates a linear response range of 0.50–200 μmol L−1 and a detection limit of 0.073 μmol L−1, with serum sample recoveries ranging from 94.7%–115%. This study provides a paradigm for designing non-precious metal nanozyme materials with integrated catalytic and SERS capabilities, demonstrating significant potential for practical applications in clinical diagnostics and biosensing.

Rigid and Lightweight CoFe2O4/Carbon Nanofibers/Polyimide Composite Aerogel with Anisotropic Structure for Efficient Microwave Absorption and Thermal Insulation

Ru Wang,Huanyu Xu,Guiyu Chu,Zhuguang Nie,Yanmeng Peng,Zhiyue Zhao,Fengjiao Jiang,Mingyu Jiang,Shuhua Qi,Rumin Wang

Polymer-based aerogels are the primary choice for many researchers developing multifunctional materials with excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) attenuation capabilities. Based on the dielectric/magnetic synergistic loss mechanism, a structure-function integrated strategy was employed to construct CoFe 2 O 4 /carbon nanofibers/polyimide (CoFe 2 O 4 /CNFs/PI) composite aerogels with multidimensional heterogeneous structures. The composite aerogels were assembled from CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles, CNFs, and polyamic acid salt molecular chains by directional freeze-drying. The three-dimensional conductive skeleton of CNFs/PI aerogel provided conduction loss, interface polarization, dipole polarization, and multiple reflection and scattering of EMW, which synergized with the magnetic loss provided by the magnetic filler CoFe 2 O 4 to produce powerful attenuation capabilities. By adjusting the CoFe 2 O 4 content to optimize impedance matching, CoFe 2 O 4 /CNFs/PI-2 aerogel exhibited outstanding EMW absorption performance with a minimal reflection loss of -65.5 dB. At a low thickness of 2.17 mm, the maximal effective absorption bandwidth reached 6.08 GHz, successfully covering the entire Ku band and part of the X band. Furthermore, the oriented porous structure of composite aerogels endowed them with lightweight (density of 0.085 g/cm 3 ), superior anisotropic mechanical response, and excellent thermal insulation performance. These properties provide a solid foundation for electromagnetic protection in complex environments and aerospace applications.

Optimized impedance matching and enhanced attenuation by heteroatoms doping of yolk-shell CoFe2O4@HCN as highly efficient microwave absorbers

Chunhao Wan,Jiayi Wang,Zexuan Li,Shansheng Yu,Xiaoyi Wang,Hongwei Tian

Microwave absorbing (MA) materials with yolk-shell structures have been extensively studied in impedance matching. However, the impedance matching achieved by the complementary effect of the core and the shell does not determine the reflection of the microwaves upon the occurrence at the first incidence. The interaction between the outer layer of materials and the electromagnetic waves significantly impacts the MA properties of materials. In this study, the impedance matching improvement method of the shell structure was further explored by preparing CoFe 2 O 4 @HCN (honeycomb carbon with N-doping) through the hydrothermal method followed by hydrolysis, polymerization, etching, and annealing. The resulting structure with heteroatoms doping provided the novel CoFe 2 O 4 @HCN with excellent impedance matching and multiple loss mechanisms contributing to MA process. The absorber with a filler loading of 40% exhibited an RL min of −68.03 dB with a matching thickness of 2.5 mm. The efficient absorbing bandwidth reached 5.92 GHz (a change from 11.92 to 17.84 GHz) at 1.99 mm thickness. Interestingly, these findings look promising for future synthesis and application of yolk-shell structure microwave absorbers.

Rapid degradation of levofloxacin using peroxymonosulfate activated by SrTiO3/CoFe2O4/rGO magnetic nano-composite: Efficiency, stability, and mechanism investigation

Yuhang Zhang,Jin Qian,Peifang Wang,Yuxuan He,Bianhe Lu,Sijing Tang,Kailin Xu

In this study, ternary magnetic nanocomposites (SrTiO 3 /CoFe 2 O 4 /rGO, SCG) doped with cobalt ferrite and loaded with rGO were successfully synthesized, and utilized to rapidly activate PMS to degrade LVF. After evaluating the efficacy of samples with different loading loads, SCG-1 (1 % wt rGO loading) was selected for further testing due to its optimal catalytic activity (degradation efficiency reached 87.4 % in 5 min). Quench experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis showed that SO 4 − , 1 O 2 , OH were the main active substance involved in LVF degradation. Based on the redox cycle of Co and Fe ions and the platform provided by perovskite and rGO, the reaction can be carried out quickly. The vulnerable sites and possible degradation pathways of LVF were further analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and LC-MS/MS analysis, and the developmental toxicity and ecological risk of intermediate products were determined based on toxicity assessment software (T.E.S.T). This study provided a new vision for realizing rapid antibiotic degradation in water environments and provided theoretical support for the subsequent research on novel nanomaterials.
