Tuning the Electronic Structure of CoP Embedded in N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanocubes Via Ru Doping for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Yi-Ru Hao,Hui Xue,Jing Sun,Niankun Guo,Tianshan Song,Jiawen Sun,Qin Wang

Designing and synthesizing stable electrocatalysts with outstanding performance for water splitting is an arduous and urgent task. Herein, Ru-anchored CoP embedded in N-doped porous carbon nanocubes (Ru-CoP/NCs) is successfully prepared. The Ru-CoP/NC reveals superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties and stability under alkaline conditions, and the corresponding overpotentials are 22 and 330 mV at 10 mA·cm–2, respectively. The unique N-doped porous carbon nanocube could boost the conductivity, and the electronic structure of CoP can be adjusted by the anchoring of Ru. Therefore, the strong interaction between Ru atoms and CoP improves the hydrogen adsorption on the catalyst, hence boosting the HER/OER performance of the Ru-CoP/NC catalyst. This work provides a facile method to exploit high-performance catalysts for water splitting.

The construction of CoP nanoparticles coated with carbon layers derived from core-shell bimetallic MOF for electrochemical detection of dopamine

Lili Xiao,SiYan Zheng,Kaixiu Yang,Jiaxing Duan,Jin Jiang

Design of catalysts with unique structures in enhancing electrochemical activity and stability has still been pursued. An eco-friendly method for preparing CoP with improved electrochemical performances was proposed in this work. A novel P-doped bimetallic [email protected] ( [email protected] ) was prepared as the precursor for constructing of [email protected] /NCS, in which CoP nanospheres coated with carbon layers ( [email protected] for short) were well-dispersed on N-doped carbon spheres (NCS for short). P was strategically pre-introduced into [email protected] for preparing of [email protected] through the selective phosphorylation on ZIF-8 shell. DA was selected to investigate the electrochemical properties of [email protected] /NCS. Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by [email protected] /NCS exhibited excellent properties in detection of DA by square wave stripping voltammetry (SWV), that a high sensitivity of 9.4 μA μM −1 , and low limit of detection of 0.03 μM. In addition, [email protected] /NCS showed enhanced performances on electrocatalytic oxidation of DA than that of CoP/C prepared based on ZIF-67 by the common phosphorization method reported in literatures. Moreover, a wide linear range from 5.0 μM to 400.0 μM was achieved at [email protected] /NCS/GCE by amperometric i-t. The practical application of CoP/NCS/GCE was evaluated by detection of DA in human serum. The satisfactory recoveries in diluted serum demonstrated the promising application of [email protected] /NCS.

Hierarchically porous CoP@CNR nanorod derived from metal-organic frameworks as noble-metal-free catalyst for dehydrogenization of ammonia-borane

Rui Jiang,Weizhe Wang,Xue Zheng,Qian Li,Zhimou Xu,Jing Peng

The development of effective and inexpensive catalysts for hydrogen release from hydrogen-storage compounds such as ammonia-borane (AB) is crucial in academic and industrial fields for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions . Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate well-dispersed CoP nanoparticles (NPs) with an average particle size of 4.3 nm. The CoP NPs were encapsulated in carbonaceous nanorods (CoP@CNR) using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a sacrificial precursor. The CoP@CNR catalysts were characterized, and their catalytic performance for the dehydrogenization of AB at 25 °C in an alkaline solution was determined. CoP@CNR (400) with a hierarchically meso-microporous structure (micropore area = 73.6 m 2  g -1 and micropore volume = 0.19 cm 3  g -1 ) and a specific surface area of 88.4 m 2  g -1 was synthesized during the phosphorization process. The hierarchically porous structure was instrumental in immobilizing metal NPs and accelerating mass diffusion. Moreover, the incorporation of P into Co NPs modified the electronic structure of the latter and accelerated the dehydrogenization of AB. This resulted in a hydrogen release rate of 10,014 mL/(min·g), which was 13 times higher than that of the pure Co nanocatalyst. In addition, we reported the kinetic studies for AB hydrolysis catalyzed by CoP@CNR (400) in terms of the temperature effect, isotope effect , catalyst concentration, AB concentration, and NaOH concentration.

Homologous Co3O4‖CoP nanowires grown on carbon cloth as a high-performance electrode pair for triclosan degradation and hydrogen evolution

Chaojie Lyu,Jinlong Zheng,Rui Zhang,Ruqiang Zou,Bin Liu,Wei Zhou

As a widely used antimicrobial agent in toothpastes and body washes for decades, triclosan (TCS) is causing great harm to the environment through wastewater. Herein, we used a two-electrode system to remove TCS comprising Co3O4 nanowires/carbon cloth (Co3O4 NWs/CC) as anode and CoP nanowires/carbon cloth (CoP NWs/CC) as cathode. At a constant current density of 10 mA cm−2, the degradation efficiency for TCS is 95% in 60 min and it is transformed into important chemical raw materials, including phenol, 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, and 2-phenoxyphenol. Subsequently, hydrogen is generated on the CoP NWs/CC cathode with Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100%. The synergetic effect of the superhydrophilic surfaces of the Co3O4 NWs/CC anode and the CoP NWs/CC cathode as well as the superaerophobicity of the cathode assures full contact of the electrolyte solution and the active materials and high-efficiency generation of H2 bubbles.

Construction of N-doped carbon encapsulated CoP hollow nanofibers as multifunctional electrode materials for potassium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries

Yueyue Ma,Ling Li,Yiman Zhu,Yajing Zhu,Ruqian Lian,Wenming Zhang

Herein, a composite of N -doped carbon coated phosphating cobalt hollow nanofibers (N/C@CoP-HNFs) was synthesized by electrospinning, phosphating, and carbon coating processes. When employed as multifunctional electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the N/C@CoP-HNFs demonstrated notable electrochemical properties. Specifically, it delivered an initial specific capacity of 420.4 mA h g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , with a sustained capacity of 190.8 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles in PIBs, and a specific capacity of 1448 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.5C in Li-S batteries, which is considered relatively high for these types of battery technology. This good performance may due to the combination of the carbon nitrogen layer and cobalt phosphide bilayer hollow tube structure, which is conducive to telescoping the diffusion length of ions and electrons and buffer volume variation, and effectively inhibits the shuttle effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also used to explore the energy storage mechanism of the material. The possible adsorption sites and corresponding adsorption energy of K + were analyzed, and the advantages of the material were explored by calculating the diffusion barrier and state density. The theoretical simulations further validated the strong adsorption capability of CoP for polysulfides. This work is expected to provide new ideas for new energy storage materials.

Preparation of hollow CoFe Prussian blue analogues and their derived CoP-FeP nanoboxes as efficient electrocatalysts as oxygen evolution reactions

Shiqi Zhang,Ying Cheng,Zhiyuan Ni,Xuefei Lei,Biao Wang,Xuanwen Liu,Rui Guo

Reasonably designing and constructing transition metal based compounds with controllable composition and structure is a promising option for obtaining economically efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. This paper presents a one-pot self-templated epitaxial growth, phase transition and self-dissolution strategy for constructing hollow nanoboxes/solid nanocubes of CoFe bimetallic Prussian blue analogues (PBAs). The CoFe mixed phosphide with a porous hollow nanoboxes structure obtained after subsequent phosphating heat treatment exhibite enhanced OER electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media, exhibiting a low overpotential of 230 mV and a Tafel slope of 35.5 dec −1 at 10 mA cm −2 , as well as excellent stability for 48 h. The excellent OER activity of CoP-FeP nanoboxes (CoP-FeP NBs) can be attributed to the combination effect between their composition and structure. Structurally, the exquisite porous hollow nanoboxes structure greatly expands the surface area, reduces ion diffusion pathways, and reduces charge transfer resistance. Compositionally, the inner transition metal phosphide exhibits good conductivity and undergoes surface reconstruction during OER, forming high valence Co(Fe)OOH active substances in situ. The strong interface coupling effect of CoOOH/FeOOH optimizes the electronic structure. This work presents a facile and efficient strategy for the construction of PBAs hollow structural materials and the exploitation of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts.

Defect engineering and electronic modulation of heterostructured CoP/Co3O4/N-doped carbon nanofibers as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting

Zhe Guan,Lili Bo,Jiayao Zhu,Zhijie Feng,Qizhao Wang,Yupeng Li,Jianmin Gou,Xiaolu Yang,Fang Nian,Jinhui Tong

The development of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production. In this work, we introduce a novel CoP/Co 3 O 4 /N-doped carbon nanofiber (CoP/Co 3 O 4 /N-CNFs) catalyst, synthesized through a combination of electrospinning, carbonization, oxidation, and phosphorization. The resulting heterostructure exhibits outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The key innovations include the interface effect and synergistic interactions between CoP and Co 3 O 4 , enhanced by nitrogen doping and abundant oxygen vacancies, which significantly improve the catalyst's intrinsic activity, electrochemical surface area, stability, and near-unity Faraday efficiency. In situ structural evolution during electrolysis leads to the formation of active Co(OH) 2 and CoOOH species, further enhancing catalytic performance. The optimal CoP/Co 3 O 4 /N-CNFs-370-1:40 catalyst demonstrates exceptional HER and OER performances, requiring overpotentials of just 79 mV and 287 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 respectively, which is superior to many analogous non-noble electrocatalysts reported. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the CoP/Co 3 O 4 heterojunction facilitates efficient charge transfer and optimizes the adsorption of reaction intermediates by modulating the d-band center, which accounts for the superior catalytic activity. This work offers a promising strategy for designing efficient non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Hollow-structured CoP nanotubes wrapped by N-doped carbon layer with interfacial charges polarization for efficiently boosting oxygen reduction/evolution reactions

Bin Liu,Rongyue Wang,Yuan Yao,Jin Ma,Yubo Sun,Jiafeng Wan,Ying Zhang,Siqi Wang,Jinlong Zou

Structure engineering for electrocatalysts via interfacial charge redistribution plays a vital role in governing the electrocatalytic activity for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Herein, a hierarchical nanostructure consisting of one-dimension (1D) hollow CoP nanotubes wrapped by nitrogen-doped carbon layer (CoP-HNTs@NCL) is designed through a simple hydrothermal-phosphorization-annealing strategy. Morphology of [email protected] (mass ratio of GO to CoP is 0.4) shows that the exterior surface of hollow CoP-HNTs is firmly coated by NCL with a layer thickness of 5-8 nm. ΔE (E j10 (1.58 V, OER)-E 1/2 (0.91 V, ORR)) of [email protected] is as low as 0.67 V for ORR/OER, which outperforms commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 and ranks the top of nonprecious-metal catalysts. Excellent activity and stability of [email protected] for ORR/OER benefit from synergistic effects between CoP and NCL , enhanced mass transfer via 1D hollow structure, and abundant active sites exposed on the interior/exterior surfaces of nanotube wall. Density functional theory calculations confirm that strong coupling interactions lead to interfacial charge polarization to remarkably promote the ORR/OER activities. This study highlights the functions of 1D hollow structure and interface effects in oxygen electrocatalysis, and opens a new avenue for interface construction by synergistically integrating favorable thermodynamics with efficient kinetics through modification of electronic structure.

Porous CoP/P-C nanofilm grown on lightweight carbon cloth as a binder/additive-free lithium-ion anode with high-performance

Xuxu Wang,Wenhui Qu,Ruxiu He,Junling Meng,Fen Yao,Ping Nie,Hairui Wang,Limin Chang,Limin Wang

Cobalt phosphide is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to a high theoretical capacity at low potentials when reaction with lithium. While, capacity-decay upon cycling and unsatisfied rate performance limited the practical application in LIBs. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of free-standing electrode composed of CoP/P-C nanofilm and lightweight carbon cloth (denoted as PCC@CoP/P-C) as an anode material for LIBs. The facile and in situ strategy for the synthesis of PCC@CoP/P-C involves phytic acid (PA) complexed with Co 2+ and subsequent annealing treatments. Owing to the unique structural merits of CoP/P-C nanofilm and the lightweight PCC , the PCC@CoP/P-C free-standing electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific stability capacity and nice cycle stability when direct used as anode for LIBs. This work offers an easy and environment friendly method to boost lithium performance for transition metal phosphides anode materials.

Constructing abundant interfaces by decorating MoP quantum dots on CoP nanowires to induce electronic structure modulation for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Yuanyuan Chen,Tingting Sui,Chaojie Lyu,Kaili Wu,Jiwen Wu,Meifang Huang,Ju Hao,Woon-Ming Lau,Chubin Wan,Dawei Pang,Jinlong Zheng

Interface engineering is a method of enhancing catalytic activity while maintaining a material's surface properties. Thus, we explored the interface effect mechanism via a hierarchical structure of MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF. Remarkably, the heterostructure MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF demonstrates an outstanding overpotential of 64.6 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 68.2 mV dec−1 in 1 M KOH. DFT calculations indicate that the MoP/CoP interface in the catalyst exhibited the most favorable H* adsorption characteristics (−0.08 eV) compared to the pure phases of CoP (0.55 eV) and MoP (0.22 eV). This result can be attributed to the apparent modulation of electronic structures within the interface domains. Additionally, the CoCH/Cu(OH)2/CF‖MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF electrolyzer demonstrates excellent overall water splitting performance, achieving 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution with a modest voltage of only 1.53 V. This electronic structure adjustment via interface effects provides a new and efficient approach to prepare high-performance hydrogen production catalysts.

A simple electrospinning strategy to achieve the uniform distribution of ultra-fine CoP nanocrystals on carbon nanofibers for efficient lithium storage

Wang Qinghua,Wang Wei,Huang Junlin,Yin Hong,Zhu Yucan,Wang Haitao,Zhou Minjie,He Binhong,Hou Zhaohui,Xu Wenyuan

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs), a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), are limited in application because of its serious volume effect in the cycle. In this work, a simple electrospinning strategy was proposed to restrict the grain size of CoP nanocrystals by nano-confined effect of carbon nanofibers with ligands. The addition of ligands not only could realize the uniform dispersion of CoP nanocrystals, but also strengthen the bond between the metals and carbon nanofibers. As a result, the CoP/CNF composite exhibits excellent lithium storage performance, and its reversible specific capacity could reach 1016.4 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . The research is anticipated to provide a new idea for the preparation of anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

A chiral porous organic polymer COP-1 used as stationary phase for HPLC enantioseparation under normal-phase and reversed-phase conditions

Yang Yu-Ping,Chen Ji-Kai,Guo Ping,Lu Yan-Rui,Liu Cai-Fang,Wang Bang-Jin,Zhang Jun-Hui,Xie Sheng-Ming,Yuan Li-Ming

A spherical chiral porous organic polymer (POPs) COP-1 is synthesized by the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction of Boc-3-(4-biphenyl)-L-alanine (BBLA) and 4,4′-bis(chloromethyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (BCMBP), which was used as a novel chiral stationary phase (CSPs) for mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) enantioseparation. The racemic compounds were resolved in normal-phase liquid chromatography (NPLC) using n-hexane/isopropanol as mobile phase and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) using methanol/water as mobile phase. The COP-1-packed column exhibited excellent separation performance toward various racemic compounds including alcohols, amines, ketones, esters, epoxy compounds, organic acids, and amino acids in NPLC and RPLC modes. The effects of analyte mass and column temperature on the separation efficiency of racemic compounds were investigated. In addition, the chiral resolution ability of the COP-1-packed column not only can be complementary in RPLC/NPLC modes but also exhibit a good chiral recognition complementarity with Chiralpak AD-H column and chiral porous organic cage (POC) NC1-R column. The relative standard deviations (RSD) ( n  = 5) of the retention time, resolution value, and peak area by repeated separation of 1-(4-chiorophenyl)ethanol are all below 3.0%. The COP-1 column shows high column efficiency (e.g., 17,320 plates m −1 for 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanol on COP-1 column in NPLC), high enantioselectivity, and good reproducibility toward various racemates. This work demonstrates that chiral POPs microspheres are promising chiral materials for HPLC enantioseparation. Graphical abstract
