To enhance the photocatalytic performance of Cu 2 O, the spent activated carbon (SAC) directly supported CuO powder and then was heated by microwaves to prepare an economical photocatalyst copper-loaded activated carbon (Cu/AC). The prepared Cu/AC catalyst was characterized by N 2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and the zero charge point (pH pzc ). The analysis results indicated that Cu/AC had an important specific surface area of 1135 m 2 /g and mainly contained Cu 2 O and metallic copper (Cu 0 ). The Cu 2 O particles were successfully loaded on the activated carbon. The photocatalytic activity of prepared Cu/AC was evaluated by means of methylene blue (MB) degradation. The effects of reaction parameters such as the pH, initial concentration and dose of Cu/AC were investigated for dye degradation . The data showed that the MB solutions were degraded using Cu/AC under UV irradiation . These results indicated that the Cu/AC photocatalyst may be conceived as a method for the treatment of dye wastewater.

A novel environment-friendly all oxide semiconductor Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction was first applied in photoelectrochemical biosensing. The heterojunction was prepared by facile two-steps of electrodeposition and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer. The enhancement of photocurrent is attributed to the rapid and efficient electron transition and the inhibition of photo-induced electron–hole pairs recombination, which stems from the formation of energy level matching Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction. Using glutathione (GSH) as a model, the fabricated photoelectrochemical sensor showed good performances with a rapid response, facile preparation, wide concentration range, excellent stability and low detection limit (0.8 μmol L −1 ). It had been successfully applied to the detection of GSH in glucose injection and the result agreed well with that given in the instruction. This strategy opened a new channel for Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction in photoelectrochemical sensing.

The fabrication of multi-component hybrid nanostructures is of vital importance because their two-phase interface could provide a rich environment for redox reactions, which are beneficial for enhancing catalytic performance. Inspired by the above consideration, strongly coupled Cu 2 O@CeO 2 core@shell nanostructures have been successfully prepared via a non-organic and clean aqueous route without using any organic additive. In this process, an auto-catalytic redox reaction occurred on the two-phase interface, followed by a triggered self-assembly process. Additionally, the size, morphology and composition of the as-obtained nanostructures can be tuned well by varying the reaction temperature, as well as the species and the amount of Cu precursors. The catalytic tests for peroxidase-like activity and CO oxidation have been conducted in detail, and the results confirm a strong synergistic effect at the interface sites between the CeO 2 and Cu 2 O components.

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce multicarbon products (C2+) holds immense potential for reducing carbon emissions and realizing high-valued CO2 utilization. However, the development of efficient catalysts still remains challenging. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) has been identified as a promising candidate, yet its C2+ selectivity and stability require further improvement. In this study, we, for the first time, blended Cu2O with cerium oxide (CeOx) nanoparticles, forming a Cu2O/CeOx hybrid catalyst which greatly enhanced the selectivity and durability for C2+ production. The optimized catalyst achieved a remarkable carbon product Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 79.6% and a C2+ product FE of 58% (±2.4%) in an H-type electrolytic cell. Our findings provide a novel strategy for significantly improving the selectivity, efficiency, and catalyst stability of CO2 electroreduction.

The Cu₂O/CoO/FeOOH heterostructure achieves high Faradaic efficiency and ammonia yield at low applied potential. • Further analysis reveals heterointerface‑tuned electronic structure and accelerated synergistic electron transfer. • The Cu₂O/CoO/FeOOH heterostructure exhibits excellent long‑term durability. Electrochemical nitrate into ammonia is a feasible and promising wastewater recovery strategy. In this work, a ternary Cu 2 O/CoO/FeOOH heterogeneous structure catalyst with rich interface has been reasonably designed. In the complex system, the electron-rich Cu active center enhances the adsorption of nitric acid radical ions, while Co and Fe species promote the generation of reacted hydrogen (H*) intermediates. The synergistic effect between multiple active sites effectively reduces the energy barrier of the eight-electron nitrate reduction reaction. Therefore, the optimized catalyst achieved a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.75% and a significant NH 3 yield of 9.83 mg h −1 cm −2 under the condition at −0.4 V vs. RHE. This study confirms the key role of interface electronic regulation in improving the electroreduction performance of nitrates, and provides a simple and reliable strategy for the rational design and construction of high-efficiency heterogeneous structural electrocatalysts. Download: Download high-res image (151KB) Download: Download full-size image A rationally designed ternary Cu 2 O/CoO/FeOOH heterostructured catalyst abundant in heterogeneous interfaces is reported, in which electron-enriched Cu sites strengthen nitrate adsorption and Co/Fe species facilitate the formation of reactive H* intermediates; the multi-site synergism substantially lowers the energy barrier for the eight-electron nitrate-to-ammonia reduction.

Nitrite is a widespread contaminant in environmental and food systems, and its excessive intake poses significant risks to human health, creating an urgent need for sensitive and robust detection technologies. The performance of conventional electrochemical sensors is often limited by the limited conductivity, aggregation tendency, and interfacial instability of copper-oxide-based materials. A CuO/Cu 2 O/C composite electrode was developed through controlled thermal treatment, where mixed-valence copper oxides are integrated into a conductive carbon framework to address these intrinsic limitations. The optimized CuO/Cu 2 O/C electrode exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance toward nitrite oxidation, delivering a broad linear range (2 μM–5000 μM), high sensitivity (52.32 μA μM −1 cm −2 ), and a low detection limit (0.101 μM). The results indicate that the prepared CuO/Cu 2 O/C composite material promotes charge separation and transfer through the heterojunction interface, utilizing the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox couple to provide abundant active sites. Moreover, the carbon substrate not only improves conductivity, inhibits particle aggregation, and increases the electrochemical active area, but also optimizes the oxidation state of copper to the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox pair. These findings provide a promising materials platform and meaningful guidance for the rational design of copper-oxide-based composites tailored for high-performance electrochemical sensing.

The regulation of product selectivity in electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) remains fundamentally constrained by the dynamic equilibrium between intermediate transport and surface coverage. In this study, we report a progress in catalytic architecture through precision-engineered Au@Cu 2 O yolk-shell tandem nanoreactors featuring dual-tunable parameters: cavity confinement dimensions and shell thickness gradients. This structural modulation enables dynamic control over both *CO intermediate enrichment and reaction pathway bifurcation. ECO 2 R performance evaluations demonstrate significant product selectivity switching at −1.31 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The Faradaic efficiency (FE) for CH 4 exhibits significant architectural dependence, increasing from 43.02% (thick-shell/large-cavity) to 65.54% (medium-dimension) and then decreasing to 23.26% (thin-shell/small-cavity). Conversely, the FE for C 2 H 4 demonstrates an inverse structural correlation, improving from 6.68% (medium-dimension) to 38.73% (thin-shell/small-cavity). The spatial domain-limiting mechanism of the yolk-shell structure directly controls the transition between protonation-dominated CH 4 formation and coupling-driven C 2 H 4 production. This work establishes a pioneering paradigm for dynamically steering catalytic selectivity through purely geometrical modulation, bypassing traditional compositional tuning limitations, thereby opening avenues for precision design of advanced electrocatalytic systems.

The increasing demand for potash has led to the increased use of 4-dodecyl morpholine (DMP), an important froth flotation agent for the extraction for potash extraction by “reverse flotation-cold crystallization”. As it is not easy to be stable and decompose in its natural state, it has seriously endangered the environment of salt lakes and the development of salt lake resources. The development of a safe and harmless catalytic system to accomplish the degradation and removal of DMP is urgent. Herein, A Cu 2 O/SnO 2 /PDA (CSP) nanoparticle with a synergistic effect of photocatalysis and Fenton-like catalysis was developed, and the CSP had a good photothermal conversion efficiency. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, not only the catalyst activity was enhanced, but also the complexation rate of electron-hole pairs was reduced, which effectively increased the degradation efficiency of DMP (an increase of about 31.56 %). In addition, by analyzing the degradation products of DMP, the possible pathways of the DMP degradation process were proposed and, at the same time, the degradation catalytic system we used was proved to be safe and harmless. A new pathway is provided for the degradation and removal of DMP in the salt lake environment.

Aqueous-phase reforming of methanol represents a promising avenue for hydrogen (H2) production. However, developing highly efficient and low-cost nonprecious catalysts remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of Cu-based catalysts with Cu, Cu2O, and CuN3 nanoparticles anchored on the nitrogen-doped carbon, forming Cu0/Cu+/Cu-N3 active sites. This catalyst achieves a H2 production rate of 140.1 μmol/gcat/s at 210 °C, which is several times to 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of Cu-, Ni-, even Pt-based catalysts, demonstrating excellent long-term stability over 350 h at 210 °C. A mechanism investigation reveals that the Cu-N3 site facilitates water dissociation into *OH and improves *CO and *OH conversion, leading to enhanced CO conversion and H2 production kinetics.

In this paper, we built the Cu 2 O@Ag nanocomposites-catalyzed 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)–H 2 O 2 system for sensitive, rapid, and low-cost colorimetric sensing of uric acid (UA). Firstly, Ag nanotriangles were synthesized by dynamic method, and then Cu 2 O was encapsulated on the nanoflakes to synthesize Cu 2 O@Ag nanocomposites. Characterization of the structure and morphology of nanocomposites material were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cu 2 O@Ag nanocomposites could catalyze the oxidation of TMB by H 2 O 2 (which is produced by enzymatic oxidation of UA), and the color changes from colorless to blue can be observed directly with the naked eyes or can be detected by UV–Vis spectrophotometer. The colorimetric sensor provided a linear absorbance response in the 0.5–100 μM UA concentration range with a 0.4 μM detection limit (S/N = 3). The recovery of UA in human serum by the proposed sensor is over 95.7%. Thus, these results imply that the UA sensor provides an effective tool in fast clinical analysis of gout without the need for expensive and advanced equipment.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to high-energy multi-carbon compounds is a significant challenge. Efforts have been made to design efficient catalysts for high selectivity toward multi-carbon products. In this study, granular protruded irregular Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) nanoparticles were synthesized using a simple water bath wet chemical reduction method. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was utilized as a directing agent to control the morphology of Cu 2 O in the process. The optimized irregular Cu 2 O (ir-Cu 2 O) catalyst exhibits a remarkable faraday efficiency of 69.3% (±3.3%) for double-carbon compounds (C 2 ), which is significantly higher than that of polyhedral Cu 2 O (p-Cu 2 O) (50.4%±1.1%) synthesized without adding PEG . Cu 2 O nanoparticles with irregular shape featuring randomly distributed spherical protrusions offer more active sites for CO 2 adsorption than p-Cu 2 O catalysts, which is beneficial for the conversion of CO 2 to C 2 . In addition, in situ infrared spectra reveal that ir-Cu 2 O reduces CO 2 to C 2 mainly through the coupling of the CO* and CHO*, thereby promoting the formation of C 2 . These findings provide valuable insights for the design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts for CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 .
