Enhanced photo-Fenton degradation for amoxicillin in aqueous by halogen-facet synergistic regulation of BiOX: Insights into photogenerated electron migration and oxidant activation

Li Wang,Chenyu Wang,Fan Li,Dongyao Yue,Chen Li,Yatao Liu,Zhenbei Wang,Fei Qi,Amir Ikhlaq,Jolanta Kumirska,Ewa Maria Siedlecka,Oksana Ismailova,Zukhra Kadirova

Halogen selection and facet engineering were effective strategies for catalyst optimization, however, their synergistic mechanism in enhancing photo-Fenton performance remained unclear. In this study, the effects of halogens (Br and I) and facets ({001}, {010} and {110}) on the photo-Fenton degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) by BiOX were systematically investigated. The results revealed that halogen selection and facet engineering enhanced the photo-Fenton performance by improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron ( e − ) and their activation capability toward oxidants. Among them, halogen selection (Br) played a dominant role in enhancing the degradation performance, while facet engineering ({010} facet) contributed secondary optimization. Experimental results demonstrated that in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS, 0.065 mM) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 , 0.065 mM), BiOBr exhibited superior photo-Fenton performance to BiOI on all facets. For the same halogen, the BiOX with the {010} facet (BiOX-010/vis/oxidant) outperformed BiOX-001/vis/oxidant and BiOX-110/vis/oxidant in degradation activity. Further analysis from the perspective of band structure and photoelectrochemical properties revealed that BiOBr enhanced photogenerated e − separation efficiency and reduction capacity by modulating its band structure. Work function calculations indicated that exposure of the {010} facet facilitated the migration of photogenerated e − through Br–Bi/Br–O–Bi bonds, reducing its interfacial work function (2.72 eV), thereby significantly improving interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Under this synergistic regulation strategy of halogen and facet, BiOBr-010 exhibited the strongest PDS adsorption affinity ( E ads  = 2.78 kJ/mol), enabling BiOBr-010/vis/PDS to achieve excellent AMX degradation performance ( k obs  = 0.028 min −1 ). This study elucidate the contributions and mechanisms of halogen and facet types to the photo-Fenton performance, providing design strategies for the development of efficient and stable photo-Fenton systems.

Dual-function MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets enable both ROS clearance and enhanced angiogenesis for myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury therapy

Shen Jiayi,Luo Yuwen,Hu Wuming,Zhang Susu,Yang Yu,Lan Linwen,Liu Enqian,Xu Jian,Hu Tingting,Nie Jingjun,Chen Dafu,Liang Ruizheng,Lyu Lingchun

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury represents a major global health concern, driven by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), which closely correlates with subsequent myocardial infarction and fibrosis. Combining ROS scavenging with ischemic myocardium revascularization holds therapeutic promise. However, developing multifunctional therapeutic agents that can simultaneously scavenge ROS and promote angiogenesis remains unreported. Herein, we propose MgSrCeAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets as a multifunctional ROS scavenger and angiogenesis promoter for efficient myocardial I/R injury treatment. MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets not only exhibit exceptional hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anions (·O 2 − ) scavenging capabilities, which is 1.78 times and 1.61 times that of CeO 2 , respectively, but also respond to the ischemia-induced acidic microenvironment to release angiogenic Sr 2+ with a concentration of 32.65 ppm (pH 5.0), which is conducive to efficient angiogenesis. Specifically, the ROS levels in I/R-injured myocardium decreased to 66.2% of its original value following intervention with MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets, while the vascular density in the peri-ischemic myocardium increased by approximately 3.6-fold. Ultimately, the infarcted myocardial area is reduced 60.9% compared to the group without MgSrCeAl-LDH intervention. Mechanistically, MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets alleviate myocardial infarction and fibrosis caused by I/R injury through activating PI3K/Akt pathway and inhibiting TGF-β pathway, ultimately improving cardiac function and inhibiting ventricular remodeling. Rapid recovery of precious metals via photocatalytic-assisted solvometallurgy using an ethylene glycol-based solvent

Anting Ding,Qibin Yan,Chenchen Zhu,Ming Li,Chuanying Liu,Chengliang Xiao

Precious metals are critical to electronics and catalysis because of exceptional conductivity, corrosion resistance, and unique physicochemical properties. However, the surge in demand driven by the expansion of the electronics and automotive industries has intensified the environmental and economic pressures associated with the accumulation of precious metal waste. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for resource recovery; however, its dependence on toxic acetonitrile solvents limits industrial applicability. Here, we present a photocatalytic-assisted solvometallurgical approach employing ethylene glycol-a benign, low-volatility solvent-to achieve complete leaching of precious metals from various industrial waste catalysts within 10 min. Field-scale experiments conducted under solar irradiation processed 125 g of spent catalyst in a single batch, yielding 0.45 g of high-purity palladium (>99%). This approach expands the solvent scope for photocatalysis, eliminates the need for hazardous reagents, and facilitates solar-powered operation, thereby offering a practical and scalable pathway for sustainable precious metal recycling.

Ultrasonic enhanced Fe-C/PDS system for sludge dewatering and carbon source release: synergy of oxidation and cracking processes

Wenye Li,Binghan Xie,Zhipeng Li,Guoyu Zhang,Zhiying Lv,Qinghao Li,Shuyu Zhao,Mu Tong,Yuanyuan Gao,Langming Bai

The effective dewatering of waste activated sludge (WAS) and the utilization of resources are crucial for the sustainable development of wastewater treatment plants. Ultrasonic (US) collaborative iron-carbon (Fe-C) activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupling system was constructed to investigate the transformation of physicochemical properties and explore the mechanisms during the cracking and oxidation of WAS. The ultrasonic enhanced Fe-C/PDS system, which exhibited excellent oxidation capacity under the conditions of PDS, Fe-C, and ultrasonic power levels at 0.12 g/g TS, 0.3 g/g TS, and 0.3 W/mL. The water content of the sludge cake was reduced to 61.71 %, while the specific resistance to filtration was lowered to 1.12 × 10 12  m/kg (decreased by 88.2 %). Furthermore, ultrasonic improved the WAS cracking capacity with a satisfying SCOD production (630.64 mg/L) and a dramatic reduction of 9.16 % in volatile solids. Compared to Fe-C/PDS, the addition of ultrasonic enhanced the leaching of Fe, released carbon source and promoted the formation of various reactive oxidative species to degrade bound EPS. The contribution of O 2 − and 1 O 2 was 37.00 % and 43.17 %, indicating the oxidation process of free radicals and non-free radicals in Fe-C/PDS/US system. Additionally, the concentration of short-chain fatty acids was increased by 96.7 %, which significantly accelerating the quality of carbon source suitable for recycling. The positive improvement of sludge physicochemical properties revealed the disintegration-degradation synergistic effect of the Fe-C/PDS/US systems. These findings provide a novel strategy for effective disposal and reduction in WAS while also offering valuable insights into resource utilization.

Efficiency and mechanism of electrically activated persulfate-coupled N-doped graphene membrane electrode for removal of PPCPs from wastewater

Junjing Li,Xingzhou Mu,Di Wu,Ganhua Liu,Liang Wang

The development of efficient electrochemical coupling systems for persulfate activation is crucial for expanding the treatment of pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater. In this study, we present an electrically activated persulfate-coupled N-doped graphene membrane electrode system, which achieves complete (100 %) removal of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) within 90 min. Nitrogen doping significantly enhances the catalytic activity of graphene membrane electrodes for PMS activation, improving CTC degradation by 45 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) identified pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen as the dominant PMS-active sites. Free radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy elucidated the reaction mechanism. Under an external electric field, the N-doped graphene membrane electrode functions as an anode, triggering PMS activation and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), including SO 4 •- , •OH and 1 O 2 . Furthermore, high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was employed to analyze intermediate products and assess the toxicity of CTC. The system exhibited excellent pH adaptability and broad applicability for PPCPs removal. This innovative electrochemical coupling system with N-doped graphene membrane electrodes advances the prospects of electrochemical technology in water pollution control. Environmental Implication In this study, we propose an innovative “electrochemically activated persulfate coupled N-doped graphene membrane electrode system” strategy. Using this strategy, we successfully fabricated a graphene membrane electrode material with N-active sites for persulfate activation. The N-sites in this structure enhance the charge distribution, electronic density, and spin density of the graphene material, thereby facilitating the activation of persulfate. The electrode material not only exhibits facile synthesis, excellent activity, and high stability, but also demonstrates considerable promise for applications in the field of environmental remediation.

Fluorescent/ratiometric colorimetric dual-node sensor based on Fe/N co-doped carbon dots for nitrite detection

Tiechun Li,Mengjia Guo,Weiwei Luo,Quanping Diao,Linlin Lv,Pinyi Ma

Nitrite (NO2−) has been extensively utilized in the food industry as a preservative and colorant; however, excessive intake can lead to serious health issues, highlighting the need for accurate and efficient detection methods. In this work, blue fluorescent iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Fe/N-CDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using ferric chloride, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as precursors. The prepared Fe/N-CDs exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity. By leveraging the catalytic activity of Fe/N-CDs and the oxidation and diazotization reactions induced by NO2−, we developed a dual-mode fluorescent and ratiometric colorimetric sensor for nitrite detection. The fluorescence and colorimetric methods had linear detection ranges of 2.5–75 μM and 2.5–100 μM, with detection limits of 0.68 μM and 1.19 μM, respectively. The developed dual-mode sensing platform was successfully applied to detect NO2− in both pickled vegetable and cured pork samples, demonstrating its feasibility in practical applications. Furthermore, the color of the reaction changed from blue to yellow as the NO2− concentration increased. Quantitative nitrite analysis was further achieved by capturing RGB values with smartphone-assisted color-recognition software, using the green-to-red (G/R) ratio as the analytical signal.

Crystalline boron-boosted Fenton-like activation of persulfate by carbon-coated nano zero-valent iron for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Song Li,Chen Chen,Jingshu Wang,Xiaoqing Min,Xinyue Xu

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have broad application prospects in environmental remediation, but the surface passivation of nZVI severely limits their performance. Although carbon coating can inhibit the oxidative passivation of nZVI in air, the deposition of iron ions on its surface during the reaction still leads to its rapid deactivation. In this study, crystalline boron was introduced as a novel co-catalyst to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) in conjunction with carbon-coated nZVI (Fe 0 @C) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The results showed that the Boron/Fe 0 @C/PDS system achieved complete removal of TC within 1 min. Free radical scavenging and chemical probe experiments confirmed the generation of multiple reactive oxygen species, with singlet oxygen being primarily responsible for the degradation of TC. Mechanism investigations revealed that crystalline boron can accelerate the redox cycle of iron ions by donating electrons, thereby inhibiting the deposition of iron ions on the Fe 0 @C surface and achieving the stable release of ferrous ions and the continuous activation of PDS. Furthermore, crystalline boron gradually undergoes surface oxidation during the electron donation process, but its surface self-cleaning effect can continuously expose new active sites. The synergistic effect of crystalline boron and carbon coating prevents passivation of nZVI throughout its lifecycle, thereby ensuring excellent catalytic efficiency and long-term stability. This study provides a practical anti-passivation strategy and offers new insights into the rational design of nZVI-based AOPs.

Oxygen vacancies self-modulating through phosphate to boost photocatalytic H2O2 generation

Yinghao Li,Ying Li,Qinglong Meng,Jingyi Zhang,Ke Jing,Qingyu Guan

Oxygen vacancies (OVs) are widely used in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation for water remediation, and phosphate is a common ion in natural water. However, the potential mechanism regarding how phosphate influences the photocatalytic performance of OVs remains unclear. The role of phosphate in the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation by the OVs and subsequent contaminant degradation during OVs photocatalysis was investigated. Phosphates primarily formed complexes with Bi at OVs, altering the local electronic structure and O 2 adsorption pattern of this active site. This reduced the energy barrier for the formation of reactive oxygen species. The formation of complexes at OVs transforms H 2 O 2 generation pathway changed from two-step one-electron to one-step two-electron, thereby increasing H 2 O 2 generation. The H 2 O 2 product exhibited excellent in-situ pollutant treatment performance. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing environmental remediation strategies by exploring the effect of phosphate on the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation.

Hongmei Liu,Boyue Zheng,Zhengxue Ge,Mengyun Liu,Caihong Tao,Fangbin Fan

The analysis and treatment of hazardous substances in food have long been constrained by the dual challenges of limited single-target recognition capability and low resource utilization efficiency. To overcome these limitations, this study developed an ionic liquid-hydrogel material using a polymerization technique. The material featured a stable porous nanostructure and exhibited dual functionality, enabling highly efficient photo-catalytic degradation and adsorptive extraction. Under optimized conditions, it achieved a degradation rate of over 90 % for the dye Amaranth and extraction recovery exceeding 85 % for three benzoylurea pesticides. Mechanistic studies using in-situ IR spectroscopy revealed that the material's efficient and synergistic pretreatment capability for the two distinct classes of pollutants was attributed to the high substrate specificity of its active sites, which ensured that the two pathways operated independently without interference, guaranteeing the reliability of the treatment process. In conclusion, the developed dual-functional material combining with the advantages of low cost, ease of preparation and environmental friendliness provided an innovative strategy for the simultaneous pretreatment of multiple food contaminants and represented a significant advancement in this field.

Anchoring CoFe2O4 nanoparticles on ZnO for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation in tetracycline degradation: Performance, mechanism and degradation pathway

Qian Tang,Yixin Fan,Yin Zhu,Kai Wu,Jialin Song,Yuwei Sun,Yonghui Gao

The development of a catalyst with high efficiency and low metal leaching is highly essential for transition metal-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators. In this study, a composite catalyst of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles anchored on ZnO (CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO) was successfully synthesized through coprecipitation coupled with calcination. Given that CoFe 2 O 4 and ZnO have opposing zeta potentials, their combination was strengthened by electrostatic forces. Moreover, the pH buffering environment provided by the ZnO carrier considerably reduced the degree of metal leaching; furthermore, the degree of aggregation of the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles greatly decreased in the presence of ZnO, exposing more active sites for PMS activation. Consequently, a tetracycline (TC) removal rate of 96.5 % was achieved by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO within 10 min, with less than 0.5 % metal leaching, and the removal rates reached over 90 % over a wide range of pH values (3.0 11.0). Through the detection of reactive species, electrochemical analysis and comparison of catalyst components before and after the reaction, an activation mechanism for PMS mediated by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO was proposed, and SO 4 •− , 1 O 2 , and electron transfer played a dominant role in PMS activation for TC removal. HPLC MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed three main pathways for TC degradation, and the results of software prediction and hydroponic experiments with peas indicated a general reduction in the toxicity of intermediate products. This work provides valuable theoretical and technical insights into metal-based catalysts for PMS activation.

Huiren Yang,Dengjie Yang,Zhiqin Li,Jing Zhang,Kecheng Wen

Regeneration of Fe 2+ in the Fenton process using the catalytic properties of carbon materials to improve pollutant removal efficiency, but pure carbon materials have limited catalytic sites, and the modification conditions are complicated and costly. In this paper, more oxygen-containing functional groups were obtained by simple ball-milling treatment, and these functional groups adsorbed Fe 3+ to the surface for reaction, accelerated the regeneration of Fe 2+ , and obviously enhanced the catalytic effect of carbon black. After 5 h, 7 h, 9 h, and 11 h of ball milling treatment to carbon black, the AO7 removal rates were 83 %, 68 %, 74 %, and 77 %, respectively. Through kinetic studies of Fe 3+ reduction experiments, the secondary kinetic rates for oxygen-containing functional groups COOH, COOC, COH, and CO were quantitatively calculated as 0.00235–0.00288 µM −1 ·min −1 , 0.00061–0.00086 µM −1 ·min −1 , 0.00017–0.00034 µM −1 ·min −1 , 0.006–0.00659 µM −1 ·min −1 . Furthermore, kinetic analysis of small-pore activated carbon using the same method yielded similar results. It has been shown that this simple ball-milling method is useful for the addition of active sites to other pure carbon materials, as well as for determining the specific reaction equation for the reduction of Fe 3+ by oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the material in the future.

Construction of NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67-Decorated Polypropylene Nonwovens for Efficient Removal of Cr (VI) via Synergistic Adsorption and Photocatalytic Reduction

Yuhao Liu,Xuyi Wang,Liping Chen,Ming Cheng,Hua Wang,Jiaojiao Shang,Dan Zheng,Beibo Zhang,Jianwu Lan,Shaojian Lin

Heavy metal contamination in water poses a serious global environmental challenge. In particular, hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is particularly concerning due to its carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. In this work, core–shell NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67 nanoparticles (NPs) were in situ stepwise grown on sulfonated polypropylene (PP) nonwoven to fabricate a multifunctional composite (NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven) for efficient removal of Cr (VI). As expected, the resulting NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven exhibited dual functionality for efficient Cr (VI) remediation: simultaneous adsorption and visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction, accompanied by effective sequestration of the resulting Cr (III), due to the presence of NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67 NPs. Under visible light irradiation, the composite achieved exceptional performance, reducing Cr (VI) concentrations from 0.608 mg/L to below 0.004 mg/L and lowering total Cr concentrations from 0.876 mg/L to below 0.004 mg/L, corresponding to a removal efficiency of over 99.6%. The mechanism was elucidated as an integrated adsorption-reduction-fixation process. More importantly, the composite demonstrated outstanding recyclability, retaining 80.0% of its removal efficiency after five regeneration cycles, highlighting its practical potential. Therefore, the as-obtained NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven can be viewed as a highly efficient material for treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater through an adsorption-photocatalytic reduction pathway.
