The main purpose of this study was to control membrane fouling by degrading natural organic matter, mainly based on free radicals, with a dead-end ultrafiltration system integrated with pretreatment . Four advanced oxidation processes , namely, ultraviolet (UV)/Fe(II), UV/persulfate (PS), Fe(II)/PS and UV/Fe(II)/PS, were used to pretreat raw water prior to ultrafiltration. The priority of the pretreatment effect followed the order of UV/Fe(II)/PS > Fe(II)/PS > UV/PS > UV/Fe(II). In the UV/Fe(II)/PS pretreatment (Fe(II) = 100 μM and PS = 400 μM), the removal rates of UV 254 with a UV irradiation time of 60 min reached 93.07%. Degradation experiments of free-radical probes (carbamazepine) and free-radical scavenger addition (sodium hyposulfite or tert-butanol) showed that the sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) was dominant in degrading organic compounds. The specific flow rate ( J / J 0 ) increased by 139.13% and the irreversible fouling resistance was reduced by 69.94%. The total interfacial energy of the colloid-membrane interaction decreased by 84.42% and the separation distance was shortened to ~2 nm. The release of Fe(III) from water under UV radiation and its possible conversion to Fe(II) were observed on the surface of the fouled membranes. After UV/Fe(II)/PS pretreatment, bulky and rough pollutant particles were transformed into a slew of sheet-contaminated layer with the appearance of numerous permeable holes, and the average surface roughness was reduced to 38.1 nm according to atomic-force-microscopy characterization.

Hydroxylated fullerene, Fullerol, has applied in many areas because of its high electron affinity and antioxidant potential, while it was few used in wastewater treatment. In this study, the mechanism involved that Fullerol accelerated the regeneration of Fe(II) in the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system under dark condition, which was investigated with chloramphenicol (CAP) as a model pollutant. In Fullerol/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system, CAP removal was completely achieved at 60 min via a non-photochemical pathway. In addition, the quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) results indicated that hydroxyl radical ( OH) was the main reactive oxygen species (ROSs). The Fullerol/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system had a rate constant of CAP degradation about 5.0 × 10 −2 min −1 , which was about 22 times higher than it in Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 Fenton-like system (2.3 × 10 −3 min −1 ). Fe(II) was ascertained the effective component that was responsible for H 2 O 2 activation to produce OH, which derived from 1) the first pathway: Fullerol complexed with Fe(III) and the redox potential of the complex is much lower than Fe(III)/Fe(II); 2) the second pathway: Fullerol acted as an electron donor to reduce Fe(III) into Fe(II). Moreover, CAP degradation intermediates were identified and its degradation pathways were proposed. This study suggested a new approach for improving the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system by accelerating Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles with Fullerol.

The remediation of organic-contaminated water is a critical environmental challenge, and iron-based persulfate (PS) activation processes have emerged as a promising solution. However, the introduction of reductive sulfur species, while accelerating the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, may also quench reactive species, potentially compromising the efficiency of Fenton-like systems. Here we systematically investigate the trade-off between accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling and quenching effects in the zerovalent iron/PS (ZVI/PS) system using thiosulfate (TSF) as an activator. Our results show that low-level TSF (0.03–1.00 mmol/L) effectively facilitated the removal of naphthalene (Nap) and atrazine (ATZ), respectively. This enhancement is attributed to accelerated ZVI dissolution and FeS x formation, which promote the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, with Fe(IV) was identified as the primary active species. However, high-level TSF (>1.0 mmol/L) drastically reduced Nap removal due to PS consumption and active species elimination. The optimal TSF dosage of 0.20 mmol/L (TSF/PS molar ratio of 1:10) demonstrated robust organic pollutant degradation, achieving a 22-fold increase in the rate constant ( k obs ) for Nap removal and 0.47–7.5-fold increases for ATZ removal. These findings highlight the potential of the TSF-ZVI/PS system as a versatile and efficient solution for degrading a wide range of organic pollutants, including PAHs and herbicides, in water treatment applications.

To degrade high-concentration and toxic organic effluents, we developed Fe-Cu active sites loaded on biomass-source carbon aerogel (CA) to produce a low-cost and high-efficiency magnetic Fenton-like catalyst for the catalytic oxidative decomposition of organic pollutants. It exhibits excellent performance in catalytic Fenton-like reactions for RhB removal at an ultrahigh initial concentration of up to 1000 ppm. To be specific, Fe3O4and Cu nanoparticles are generated in situ on a mesoporous CA support, denoted as an Fe3O4-Cu/CA catalyst. Experimentally, factors including initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, H2O2dosage, pH, and temperature, which significantly influence the oxidative degradation rate of RhB, are carefully studied. The RhB (1000 ppm) degradation ratio reaches 93.7% within 60 min under low catalyst and H2O2dosage. The catalyst also shows slight metal leaching (almost 1.4% of total Fe and 4.0% of total Cu leached after a complete degradation of 25 μmol RhB under conditions of 15 mg catalyst dosage, 20 mL RhB solution (600 ppm), and 200 μL 30 wt% H2O2dosage, at pH of 2.5, at 40 °C), good catalytic activity for degrading organic pollutants, excellent reusability, and good catalytic stability (the degradation ratio is nearly 82.95% in the 8th cycle reaction). The synergistic effect between Fe and Cu species plays a vital role in promoting the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and enhancing the generation of ·OH. It is suitable for ultrahigh-concentration organic pollutant degradation in practical wastewater treatment applications.

Washing oil, a petroleum product, is a mixture of naphthalene, fluorene, biphenyl, quinoline, pyridine, indole, and their substitutes. Emulsified washing oil wastewater contains small oil droplets that are stably dispersed in water, making oil recovery difficult. Therefore, advanced oxidation is used for removal, and a Fenton-like oxidation reaction using sodium percarbonate (SPC, Na2CO3·1.5H2O2) rather than hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) offers a safer alternative. In this study, Fe(II)-catalyzed SPC (Fe(II)/SPC) oxidation and ceramic membrane filtration were combined to achieve the continuous purification of emulsified washing oil wastewater. Fe(II) and SPC were injected at dosages of 144 and 96 mmol/h, respectively, and the washing oil removal efficiency from the 100 mg/L influent emulsion wastewater reached 98.77%. The significant reduction in total resistance indicated that the oxidation process effectively alleviated membrane fouling and enhanced the membrane’s reusability. Quinoline was selected as the target analyte in the washing oil emulsion, and its degradation pathways via Fenton-like oxidation were proposed. The findings of this study provide a reference for the research on advanced oxidation-coupled membrane filtration for petroleum wastewater treatment.

Photocatalysis water treatment without artificial energy is cost-effective, waste-free and sustainable. Coventional powder photocatalysts have tiny contact surfaces, low catalytic efficiency, and are difficult to recycle and reuse, restricting their usage. Herein, a Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 material is developed by engineering hollow quadrangle t-FeC 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets on lignin membranes through facile impregnation coating and precipitation reaction. Fast mass transport, catalytic activity and accessibility characterize hollow tetragonal FeC 2 O 4 · 2H 2 O. TEM, SEM and FTIR show that lignin binds t-FeC 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 . The g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets are uniformly wrapped on the surface of lignin fibers, and t-FeC 2 O 4 is loaded between them. This structure increases visible light absorption and active site-contaminant contact. The chain reaction produces extremely active hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide because the Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 modules are rich inFe II , according to XPS. Transient photocurrent response curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggest a promoted charge migration and isolation at the redox reaction interface in the Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 system. As a result, Lignin@t-FeC 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 degrades 99% Rhodamine B within 40 minutes, and this performance is stable even under difficult conditions, such as low hydrogen peroxide concentration and high pH. This study combines lignin membranes with the photo-Fenton reaction, and thus provides new concept for the development and application of membranes and photocatalysis.

In this work, Ag/AgCl/FeOCl (Ag–Fe) catalysts were successfully prepared via multistep routes in which Ag was uniformly anchored to the enriched Cl sites provided by exfoliated FeOCl nanosheets. Among these Ag–Fe catalysts, 5% Ag–Fe exhibited the highest pseudo first-order kinetic constant 0.1056 min −1 for photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), which was 11 times higher than that of FeOCl (0.0096 min −1 ). Ag–Fe catalysts exposed more coordinatively unsaturated Fe active sites to coordinate with H 2 O 2 due to the cleavage of Fe–Cl bond. The exposed coordinatively unsaturated Fe(III) active sites could capture the photoinduced electrons and reduce them to Fe(II), which boosted the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons of Ag 0 transferred to the FeOCl, promoting the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). In addition, the intensified visible light adsorption (SPR effect) was achieved after introducing Ag/AgCl nanoparticles on exfoliated FeOCl. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and holes (h + ) were determined as the main reactive oxidative species (ROS) in the photo-Fenton degradation process.

Suppression of tumor development by inducing ferroptosis may provide a potential remedy for triple-negative breast cancer, which is sensitive to intracellular oxidative imbalance. Recently, artemisinin (ART) and its derivatives have been investigated as potential anticancer agents for the treatment of highly aggressive cancers via the induction of ferroptosis by iron-mediated cleavage of the endoperoxide bridge. Owing to its poor water solubility and limited intracellular iron content, it is challenging for further application in antitumor therapy. Herein, we developed ferrous-supply nano-carrier for ART based on tannic acid (TA) and ferrous ion (Fe(II)) coated on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF) with ART encapsulated (TA-Fe/ART@ZIF) via coordination-driven self-assembly. Drug release experiments showed that ART was not nearly released in pH 7.4, while 59% ART was released in pH 5.0 after 10 h, demonstrating the excellent pH-triggered release. Meanwhile, a high level of intracellular ROS and MDA, accompanied with decreasing GSH and GPX4, displayed a newly developed nano-drug system displayed markedly enhanced ferroptosis. Compared with monotherapy, in vitro and vivo tumor inhibition experiments demonstrated higher efficiency of tumor suppression of TA-Fe/ART@ZIF. This work provides a novel approach to enhance the potency of ferroptotic nano-medicine and new directions for TBNC therapy.

In this study, heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst, nano-Fe° encapsulated in hydrothermal carbon (Fe°/HTCC), was prepared via a green chemistry route, aiming at increasing the degradation efficiency of p-chlorophenol (4-CP) by controlling the stability of the catalyst and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling in the advanced oxidation process. The degradation of 4-CP by heterogeneous Fenton reactions was conducted with the assistance of visible light, which was monitored with the aid of the HPLC and total organic carbon analysis. The results revealed that Fe°/HTCC composite markedly enhanced both the degradation (100 %) and the mineralization efficiency (∼73.9 %) for 100 mg/L 4-CP within 60 min at pH 4.0. More importantly, the catalyst presented a high stability to resist the side oxidation, where the removal efficiency was maintained even after 5 successive cycling experiments. Electron spin resonance confirmed that in the presence of both HTCC and visible light irradiation greatly enhanced the production of •OH for the degradation and mineralization of 4-CP, which can be attributed to the enhancement of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling. This study paves a new way toward the rational design of Fe°–carbon composites as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for potential applications into wastewater treatment.

The Fenton reaction, an effective advanced oxidation process (AOP) for degrading organic pollutants, requires the addition of H 2 O 2 that is expensive and not environmentally friendly to some extent. It has been reported that piezocatalysis can generate H 2 O 2 under mechanical excitation. Therefore, it is promising to carry out the Fenton catalysis utilizing in situ H 2 O 2 generated by piezocatalysis. However, the current piezocatalysis-assisted Fenton (Piezo-Fenton) reaction was realized by adding piezoelectric nanoparticles and Fe(II) ions to pollutant solutions, which would induce more iron-based chemicals that are not easy to recycle. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 -BaTiO 3 nanocomposites were prepared to demonstrate the feasibility of piezo-Fenton catalysis without the addition of H 2 O 2 or Fe(II) ions. The organic dye degradation efficiency of 98.2% is obtained using Fe 3 O 4 -BaTiO 3 nanocomposites in the acidic solution, one-third and two-thrid greater than that of pure piezocatalysis and that of iron-based Fenton reaction , respectively. Moreover, since the piezocatalysis process is the rate-determining step of the whole piezo-Fenton reaction, all the H 2 O 2 generated can be consumed. Considering that the solid nanocomposites can be magnetically recycled, piezo-Fenton catalysis leaves no additional chemicals in clean water and thus provides an environmentally friendly and low-cost approach for organic dye degradation.

ABSTRACT Zinc deplating waste liquid is considered hazardous due to the presence of heavy metal Zn(II) and hydrochloric acid, along with Fe(II). This study aims to develop a new adsorbent for efficient separation of zinc (II) from deplating waste liquid in a real factory. The novel adsorbent, PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 , was prepared by grafting home-made amino-rich carbon quantum dots (CQDs-NH 2 ) onto a chloromethyl polystyrene resin matrix. It has been observed that amino groups can be protonated under strongly acidic conditions, enabling them to adsorb negatively charged Zn(II)-Cl complexes while repelling positively charged Fe(II)-Cl complexes. The grafted nano-size CQDs-NH 2 can offer more adsorption positions to improve the adsorption properties. The results shown that PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 presented higher Zn(II) adsorption capacity and better performance in separating Zn(II) from Fe(II) compared to the conventional anion exchange resin (717). At 298 K, PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 showed a maximum Zn(II) adsorption capacity of 201.77 mg/g, and a selective Zn(II)/Fe(II) separation factor of 3033.72, which were 54.7% and 45.4 times higher than those of 717 resin. In the fixed bed adsorption process, PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 exhibited 61.5% higher adsorption performance than 717 resin when treating actual zinc deplating waste liquid. Moreover, the water consumption during regeneration of PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 is reduced by 10.3% compared to the 717 resin. These findings indicate that PSCL-CQDs-NH 2 is an effective material for the treatment of industrial zinc deplating waste liquid.

The ferrous species (Fe(II))-periodate (PI) system employs efficient decontamination by generating ferryl species (Fe(IV)-oxo) under acidic pH conditions. However, the mechanisms by which the Fe(II)/PI system operates across a broad pH range remain elusive. In light of the rapid oxidation and consumption of Fe(II) at neutral pH, we developed an electro-Fe(II) system utilizing an iron plate anode to activate PI (E(Fe/C)/PI). Efficient sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was achieved under the E(Fe/C)/PI system across a range of pH values. Quenching and chemical probe experiments revealed a transition from Fe(IV)-oxo to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the predominant reactive species from acidic to near-neutral pH, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the differences in one-electron transfer capacity and hydrolysis pathways for various protonated Fe(IV)-oxo species underlie the variations in catalytic mechanisms. This study not only enhances the efficiency of the Fe(II)/PI system but also provides a comprehensive understanding of the activation mechanisms at different pH levels.
