The construction of binder-free electrodes with well-defined three-dimensional (3D) morphology and optimized electronic structure represents an efficient strategy for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts for the development of efficient green hydrogen technologies. Herein, Ru nanocrystals were modified on 3D interconnected porous FeOOH nanostructures with open network-like frameworks on NiFe foam (Ru/FeOOH@NFF), which were used as an efficient electrocatalyst. In this study, a 3D interconnected porous FeOOH with an open network structure was first electrodeposited on NiFe foam and served as the support for the in-situ modification of Ru nanocrystals. Subsequently, the Ru nanocrystals and abundant oxygen vacancies were simultaneously incorporated into the FeOOH matrix via the adsorption-reduction method, which involved NaBH 4 reduction. The Ru/FeOOH@NFF electrocatalyst shows a large specific surface area , abundant oxygen vacancies , and modulated electronic structure, which collectively result in a significant enhancement of catalytic properties with respect to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The Ru/FeOOH@NFF catalyst exhibits an outstanding OER performance, requiring a low overpotential (360 mV) at 200 mA cm −2 with a small Tafel slope (58 mV dec -1 ). Meanwhile, the Ru/FeOOH@NFF catalyst demonstrates more efficient UOR activity for achieving 200 mA cm −2 at a lower overpotential of 272 mV. Furthermore, an overall urea electrolysis cell using the Ru/FeOOH@NFF as the anode and Pt as the cathode (Ru/FeOOH@NFF||Pt) reveals a cell voltage of 1.478 V at 10 mA cm −2 and a prominent durability (120 h at 50 mA cm −2 ). This work will provide a valuable understanding of the construction of high-performance electrocatalysts with 3D microstructure for promoting urea-assisted water electrolysis.

Integrating multifunctional nanomaterials with phase change material (PCM) provides great potential in the fields of thermal management, energy storage, infrared stealth and thermal camouflage. Herein, shuttle-shaped β-FeOOH nanoparticles were firstly prepared and coated with one layer of poly(pyrrole) (PPy) as the photothermal agent. The β-FeOOH@PPy nanocomposites can easily thermally transfer into Fe 3 O 4 @PPy at a low calcination temperature of 300 °C while maintaining their shuttle-like morphology. The obtained Fe 3 O 4 @PPy exhibited a wide-spectral strong absorption over the UV-Vis-NIR region, excellent photothermal conversion effect, and magnetic properties. To fabricate the composite film, the β-FeOOH@PPy nanocomposites were dispersed into the matrix of polyimide (PI) precursor, and then freeze-dried to acquire hybrid aerogel. During the thermal treatment at 300 °C, both the thermal imidization of polymer backbone into PI and crystal transformation of β-FeOOH into Fe 3 O 4 took place at the same time, resulting in PI/Fe hybrid aerogel. By vacuum impregnation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the PCM into the aerogel framework, a flexible PI/Fe/PEG composite film was obtained, which possessed strong wide-spectral absorption, magnetic property, and thermal regulation capacity. Taking advantages of the thermal energy absorption capacity of PEG and the reduced radiation via the wide NIR absorption of Fe-based nanocomposites, the PI/Fe/PEG composite film could achieve superior performance in infrared stealth and thermal camouflage.

As an alternative to noble metal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, iron-based materials face limitations in their practical applications due to their relatively low activity and conductivity, despite their cost-effectiveness. In this study, we developed a Ce-doped amorphous FeOOH catalyst (Ce-FeOOH) using an electron modulation strategy, leveraging the strong electron-absorbing capability of Ce 4+ ions to regulate the electronic structure of the FeOOH active site. Experimental results and characterizations demonstrated that Ce 4+ extract electrons from the iron sites via the Ce(IV)-O-Fe electronic bridges, generating highly active iron species with elevated oxidation states, thereby effectively enhancing the OER catalytic performance. The optimized Ce-FeOOH-3:2 exhibited outstanding OER performance in 1.0 M KOH, achieving a low overpotential of 248 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec −1 . Moreover, the material exhibits stable continuous electrolysis performance for 100 h at overpotentials of 250 mV and 384 mV, respectively. This work provides a novel approach to synergistically modulating the electronic state of iron-based catalysts through high-valent metal doping and structural amorphization, offering valuable insights of the design and development of highly efficient and stable non-precious metal OER catalysts.

Although integrated energy storage devices, such as in-plane micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), are attractive for powering portable microelectronic devices, it is still challenging to develop patterning techniques with high practicability and to rationally design and fabricate electrochemically active materials using feasible procedures. Here, we propose a facile solution-immersion method of fabricating interdigitated copper electrodes with an in situ converted array of Cu(OH)2@FeOOH nanotubes (NTs). A copper current collector can be patterned together with widely employed copper circuits by a facile copper-patterning approach based on cost-effective electroless catalytic deposition of copper with patterned Ag catalysts, which is greatly conducive to the integration of in-plane energy storage devices into microelectronic systems. Furthermore, the rationally designed array of Cu(OH)2@FeOOH NTs, which was converted in situ from the patterned copper electrodes, was demonstrated to be an excellent electrochemically active material with advantages that included a porous structure with a large specific surface area, excellent wettability by the electrolyte, short ion diffusion lengths and one-dimensional electron transport pathway. The resulting MSC devices that were fabricated with the interdigitated Cu(OH)2@FeOOH/Cu electrodes exhibited a high specific capacitance (58.0 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2), a high energy density (18.07 μW h cm−2), excellent cycling stability and desirable flexibility.

In this study, α-FeOOH on reduced graphene oxide (rGO-α-FeOOH) supported on an Al-doped MCM-41 catalyst (RFAM) was optimized for the visible-light photo-Fenton oxidation of phenol at neutral pH. The stability of the catalysts, effect of bubbling aeration, and degradation intermediates were investigated. Results indicated that RFAM with a large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) area and mesoporous structure displayed excellent catalytic activity for the visible-light-driven (VLD) photo-Fenton process. Phenol degradation was well described by a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics model. Raman analysis demonstrated that an rGO-α-FeOOH (RF) composite is formed during the ferrous-ion-induced self-assembly process. Al-MCM-41 could uniformly disperse RF nanosheets and promote the mobility and diffusion of matter. The activity of the main catalyst α-FeOOH was enhanced after the incorporation of rGO nanosheets. The α-FeOOH crystal in RFAM showed catalytic activity superior to those of Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 . The RFAM catalyst, with an optimal GO-Fe 2+ mass ratio of 2.33, exhibited a larger BET area, pore size, and pore volume, and thus exhibited high performance and energy utilization efficiency in the VLD photo-Fenton reaction with remarkable stability. Bubbling N 2 inhibited catalytic performance, while bubbling O 2 or air only slightly accelerated the phenol degradation. Visible light played an important role in accelerating the formation of reactive oxygen species (·OH) for the highly efficient phenol degradation. Analysis of degradation intermediates indicated a high phenol mineralization level and the formation of low-molecular-weight organic acids. This work would be helpful in providing an insight into a new type of catalyst assembly and a possible route to a promising heterogeneous catalyst applicable in the visible light photo-Fenton process for effective wastewater remediation at neutral pH.

Slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis limits hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a lower thermodynamic potential (0.37 V vs. RHE) than OER, offers an energy-saving alternative. Designing robust, multifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation by water electrolysis remains challenging. In this work, a universal two-stage solvothermal strategy was developed to synthesize α/β-FeOOH-based self-supported hierarchical structure catalysts on arbitrary metal substrates, evading polymeric binders. FeOOH/Fe achieves exceptional HER performance, while FeOOH/Ni delivers superior OER/UOR activity, exhibiting extremely-low UOR kinetics with a 12.24 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope. Asymmetric FeOOH/Ni (+)||FeOOH/Fe (−) electrolyzer requires ultralow voltages of 1.799 V (1.0 M KOH), 1.888 V (seawater/1.0 M KOH), and 1.627 V (0.33 M urea/1.0 M KOH) to drive 300 mA cm −2 , surpassing most similar systems. It maintains >9 Faraday efficiency over 100-h at ≥ 300 mA cm −2 , demonstrating industrial-grade stability. The catalysts’ accessible active sites, accelerated charge transfer, rapid kinetics, and superhydrophilicity synergistically enable rapid mass/electron transport and durable operation. This work provides a scalable platform for binder-free electrocatalysts, advancing practical hydrogen production through urea-assisted electrolysis and seawater utilization.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered extensive attention in the area of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis because of their remarkable specific surface area and tunable morphologies and composition. However, the low electrical conductivity and poor stability severely hinder their potential as high-performance OER catalysts. Herein, we employed 2-thiobarbituric acid as etching agent, sulfur source and ligand, and nickel-iron foam as the metal source and substrate, to synthesize Ni 3 S 2 /FeOOH@iron thiobarbituric acid-based framework (Fe-TBA) composite on the nickel-iron foam via a one-step hydrothermal method. Experimental findings reveal that Ni 3 S 2 can modulate the morphological structure of FeOOH@Fe-TBA as well as boost its stability, consequently delivering exceptional OER activity. It requires merely an overpotential of 232 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is 43.1 mV dec −1 . Furthermore, when an overall water-splitting system is constructed where Ni 3 S 2 /FeOOH@Fe-TBA and Pt/C act as the anode and cathode, respectively, it operates at a mere 1.52 V under a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and maintains the stable performance for more than 100 h. This study offers a new strategy for fabricating sulfides/MOFs composites to realize highly efficient water oxidation.

Super-wetting membranes with outstanding permeation and anti-fouling performance are promising candidates for highly-efficient oily wastewater treatment . Herein, we designed a facile strategy to fabricate the super-hydrophilic/underwater super-oleophobic two-dimensional MXene-based composite membrane via vacuum-assisted self-assembly of two-dimensional MXene nanosheets on porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate and in situ mineralization of photocatalyst β-FeOOH on the membrane surface. Benefiting from the inherent super-wettability and regulated lamellar structure (Short transport pathway and abundant nanochannels), the resultant MXene-based composite membrane displayed fast permeation flux (500.38–1022.7 L m −2 h −1 ) and favorable separation efficiency (99.32–99.72%) for a series of micro-scaled oil-in-water emulsions. Importantly, the excellent photo-induced self-cleaning capability and low oil-adhesion contributed to the high anti-fouling resistance, outstanding reusability, and durability of 2D MXene composite membrane. Moreover, the 2D MXene composite membrane exhibited superior chemical stability, which enabled it to maintain highly efficient oil/water separation performance in high-temperature, high salty, and strongly corrosive conditions. This work provides a feasible route to fabricate durable super-wetting 2D membranes with photo-Fenton self-cleaning capability for the oily wastewater treatment in harsh environments.

This study investigated phosphorus release, iron reduction, and the generation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during the anaerobic co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and starchy food waste (SFW). Meanwhile, the formation of vivianite crystals was compared between two different iron sources: ferric oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) and iron citrate (FeC 6 H 5 O 7 ). The results showed that when the amount of SFW added was 30%, phosphorus release increased by 3.5-5 times, and the VFAs yield reached 2857.85 mg/L. When using FeC 6 H 5 O 7 as the iron source, the production of vivianite and VFAs increased by 2 times and 5 times, respectively. Additionally, citric acid enhanced the metabolic activity of acid-producing bacteria, promoting the conversion of more substrates into VFAs. The addition of organic substrates during co-fermentation promoted the growth of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria, enhancing hydrolysis and acidogenesis. These changes were beneficial to the biological processes of Fe 2+ and PO 4 3− release and VFAs production. The experiment further revealed that in the organic iron source FeC 6 H 5 O 7 experimental group, the acid-producing bacterial consortium preferentially utilized tyrosine-type substrates, ultimately achieving coupling between VFAs accumulation and Fe 3+ reduction. Overall, this study provides new insights into vivianite formation and VFAs production during the co-fermentation of WAS and SFW with different iron sources, offering a potential pathway for simultaneous nutrient recovery and waste valorization.
