Emission of polychlorinated dibenzop-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) have exerted more and more pressure on humans and the environment. The catalytic oxidation has been a good selection for eliminating dioxin in industries. Carbon-based catalysts were great potential to alleviate dioxin because of their large surface area and low cost. Catalytic oxidation of dioxin over metal oxide catalysts M/AC (M = V, Fe, Cu, Mn) was evaluated, and V/AC showed the highest catalytic activity at 300 °C. The catalysts surface acid amounts were improved through loading metal oxide, especially the Lewis acid, which could promote DBF adsorption on catalysts. Combined in-situ FTIR with GC–MS, two different reaction paths were provided on V/AC and Cu/AC catalyst. The C–C bond of DBF was priority broken to be oxidized on V/AC, and main transformation of DBF was from benzofuran, phenol and maleic acid to final products. The C–H bond of DBF was firstly activated on Cu/AC, and large unstable quinone species were produced. The main transformation of DBF was from DBF- quinone, benzofuran, furan to final products on Cu/AC. In this work, detailed reaction paths and by-products of DBF oxidation were provided.

In recent years, the invasive cypress bark beetle ( Phloeosinus aubei ) has caused extensive damage to Platycladus orientalis plants in China, but its infestation is hard to monitor in the early stages. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was initially employed to investigate the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of P. aubei- infested P. orientalis saplings. The emissions of total sesquiterpenes were dominating (84−86% of total VOCs) and increased by 3.09-fold in P. aubei- damaged P. orientalis samples compared to undamaged samples, and the monoterpenes, aromatic compounds, and ketone emissions also had varying degrees of increase between 1.39-fold and 5.65-fold. Based on this variation, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) was applied, as an untargeted analytical approach, to discriminate P. orientalis samples with different invasive severity. Two different features derived from GC-IMS data were adopted as the input information for classification and prediction models. Results showed that grid search support vector machine (GS-SVM) combined with multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA) based on spectral fingerprint achieved the best classification performances (> 88.98%), and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSR) method can accurately predict the pest numbers ( R 2 > 0.9423 and RMSE < 0.9827). In a word, the VOC profiling-based approach had the potential for evaluating P. aubei invasive severity and pest management.

Due to high-density farming methods and poor farming environments, freshwater fish often have poor muscle texture and a fishy odor before marketing, which impacts consumer acceptance. Short-term low-salinity seawater treatment of freshwater fish before marketing has been found to improve the quality of the fish, but the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have not yet been revealed. In this study, metabolomics technique was used based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) to screen different metabolites and predict potential metabolic pathways after treatment with low-salinity seawater. The results showed that 3838 metabolites were presented in all of the carp samples, while 62 and 64 differential metabolites were found in the comparative groups (FW, SW, and CK represented freshwater, seawater and non-transient group, respectively). Additionally, 25 and 26 metabolic pathways were enriched from these groups. Glutaric acid, PC, and creatinine might be potential biomarkers. Seawater aquaculture significantly altered the lipid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, and amino acid metabolism of carp, enhancing its freshness and having a significant impact on its quality. This study provided insights into the metabolic changes in carp under different rearing conditions and also served as a theoretical basis for salinity treatment before freshwater fish are brought to the market.

Yanyangke mixture (YM) is composed of 12 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used for the treatment of patients with cough, dry throat and other diseases caused by acute or chronic pharyngitis or patients with difficulty in expectoration. With the wide application of YM in clinical practice, its quality control has attracted huge attention. Based on the multi-component characteristics of Chinese herbal medicines, it is pertinent to establish a quality evaluation system. A new idea is to adopt gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) chemical composition identification, GC–MS fingerprint, and GC content determination as a potential quality control index of the volatile oil in YM. In this study, the volatile oil of YM was extracted by steam distillation, and the chemical components of the volatile oil were analyzed by GC–MS, and 43 chemical components were identified. The fingerprint of the volatile oil from YM was established and the similarity evaluation was performed. Combined with chemometric methods, such as cluster analysis, principal component analysis and partial least squares analysis, the chemical composition differences of the volatile oil from different batches of YM were compared and the symbolic components affecting the quality of the volatile oil from different batches of YM were excavated. Finally, three components were selected as the potential active component markers of YM and the GC content determination method of these three components was established. A rapid, reasonable, and effective quality evaluation and control method of YM volatile oil was established, which provided a reference for further development and research on YM, as well as a new idea for research on other TCM prescriptions.

A method was developed for simultaneous determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in milk by gas chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Cyanide and thiocyanate were derivatized with pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) as PFB-CN and PFB-SCN, respectively. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was employed both as a phase transfer catalyst and a protein precipitant in the sample pretreatment, which facilitates the separation of the organic and aqueous phases, and greatly simplifies the pretreatment procedures to achieve simultaneous and rapid determination of cyanide and thiocyanate. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) of cyanide and thiocyanate in milk were 0.006 mg/kg and 0.015 mg/kg, and the spiked recoveries ranged from 90.1% to 98.2% and from 91.8% to 98.9% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 18.9% and 15.2%, respectively. The proposed method was validated as a simple, fast and highly sensitive method for the determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in milk.

The effects of the type and content of alkali/alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) on the co-pyrolysis of cellulose/high density polyethylene (HDPE) were studied using TGA and Py-GC/MS. AAEMs showed different effects on the decomposition characteristics of cellulose/HDPE mixtures. During cellulose/HDPE co-pyrolysis, AAEMs present in char could act as a base catalyst, with different catalytic effect on products distribution depending on the types of AAEMs. Na showed stronger catalytic cracking effect to promote alkenes formation compared to the use of K, Ca, and Mg. The comparison of experimental and calculated products distributions of raw cellulose/HDPE confirmed the existence of synergistic effect , which facilitated the cleavage of glycosidic linkages to form anhydrosugars and promoted the scission of HDPE chains to produce hydrocarbons. The effect of potassium on this synergy was also investigated. With increased potassium content, the yields of anhydrosugars and hydrocarbons decreased while the yields of furans and ketones increased, suggesting that potassium inhibited the cleavage of glycosidic bonds and promoted ring-opening reactions. This indicated that addition of potassium inhibited the synergy between cellulose and HDPE.

The origin of malt is a crucial factor influencing malt flavor. In this study, the volatile compounds of barley malt from four different producing areas were comprehensively characterized by gas chromatography electronic nose (GC-E-Nose), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). GC-E-Nose analysis revealed significant differences in volatile flavor compounds among malt samples from different origins. GC-MS identified 71 volatile compounds, with aldehydes being the most abundant in all four samples. GC-IMS identified 50 volatile compounds, and obtained the most abundant aldehydes included butyraldehyde, 3-methyl-2-butyraldehyde. etc not detected by GC-MS. The combination of GC-MS data with odor activity value (OAV) analysis identified 24 flavor compounds as key aroma compounds (OAV ≥1). Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model combined with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to screen out seven volatile markers: 1-penten-3-ol, decanal, ethyl butyrate, ethyl acetate, ethyl isovalerate, isoamyl acetate, and dimethyl sulfide. The integration of these techniques provided a better characterization of flavor compounds and their differences in malt from different origins. The results provided theoretical guidance for the factory to improve malt flavor quality.

To analyze the components of the fatty oil extracted from Antrodia camphorata fungus powder and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of A. camphorata crude oil. A derivatized gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was developed for the quantification of 19 fatty acids in extracts of A. camphorata obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ). Good separation was obtained under the optimized chromatographic conditions and 19 target compounds after methyl-esterification were identified by GC–MS on a HP-VOC capillary column (60 m × 320 μm × 1.8 μm) with an initial temperature set at 80 °C. The validity of the established method was examined experimentally with good linearity, intra-assay precisions, repeatability, stability and recovery. The antioxidant activity of A. camphorata crude oil was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay. Nineteen fatty acids showed good linearity over the tested ranges (r > 0.9956) and the recovery ranged from 93.47 to 104.89 %. The crude oil extracted from A. camphorata fungus powder also revealed its antioxidant activity. It was the report about simultaneous determination of 19 fatty acids in A. camphorata and antioxidant activity of its crude oil for the first time. The established method might also be utilized for the investigation of edible plant materials and agricultural products containing fatty acids.

White Peony Tea (WPT) is valued for its unique flavor and pleasant sensory effects. However, the specific aroma compounds in WPT contributing to this pleasant sensation and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study integrates GC–MS, computational modeling, and sensory evaluation to systematically explore the key pleasant aroma compounds in WPT and their potential mechanisms. Seven key components were identified as eliciting the pleasant sensation of WPT, including cedrol and β -ionone. These compounds activate human pleasure receptors, influencing neurological pathways to enhance sensory pleasure. Molecular simulations validated the stability of the interactions between the aroma compounds and their targets, specifically cedrol–CHRM4, cedrol–ADORA1, β -ionone–ADORA2A, and cedrol–MAOB. Sensory evaluation revealed pleasantness scores for these aroma compounds between 2.60 and 6.80, supporting the positive effects on sensory experience. This research provides scientific insight into the relationship between tea aroma and sensory pleasure, providing a foundation for the development of tea products.

Twelve kinds of base oils were characterized by a series of analytical methods to obtain detailed composition and structure information. Mineral oil and poly alpha olefin oil were mainly composed of long-chain alkanes, while ester oil was mainly composed of ester compounds. Ten of the 12 base oils were selected to synthesize barium lubricating greases . Both base oils and greases were evaluated by molecular simulation , and the corresponding molecular models were constructed based on the structural information of base oils. Grease models constructed by barium 12-hydroxystearate and ester oil exhibited the largest surface adsorption energy and intermolecular interaction energy, respectively, because polar groups in lubricant tend to adsorb on metal surface and form an absorbing film. Comparing physicochemical properties of the synthesized barium lubricating greases. The temperature resistance of grease presents a positive correlation with the simulated intermolecular interaction energy.
