Currently, the major challenge in terms of research on K-ion batteries is to ensure that they possess satisfactory cycle stability and specific capacity, especially in terms of the intrinsically sluggish kinetics induced by the large radius of K + ions. Here, we explore high-performance K-ion half/full batteries with high rate capability, high specific capacity, and extremely durable cycle stability based on carbon nanosheets with tailored N dopants, which can alleviate the change of volume, increase electronic conductivity, and enhance the K + ion adsorption. The as-assembled K-ion half-batteries show an excellent rate capability of 468 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , which is superior to those of most carbon materials reported to date. Moreover, the as-assembled half-cells have an outstanding life span, running 40,000 cycles over 8 months with a specific capacity retention of 100% at a high current density of 2000 mA g −1 , and the target full cells deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 146 mA h g −1 after 2000 cycles over 2 months, with a specific capacity retention of 113% at a high current density of 500 mA g −1 , both of which are state of the art in the field of K-ion batteries. This study might provide some insights into and potential avenues for exploration of advanced K-ion batteries with durable stability for practical applications.

Transition metal oxides have attracted extensive research interest for supercapacitors due to efficient ion accessibility of nanostructures. Here, hierarchically hollow α-K0.2MnTi0.07O0.8 nanotubes with high K content are prepared via a self-sacrificial template method. The electrochemical performance of α-K0.2MnTi0.07O0.8 nanotubes is significantly improved when beneficial K+ is intercalated into a considerably ordered α-MnO2 phase with exchangeable Mn–K slabs by a K-pre-reserved reaction. Significantly, the α-K0.2MnTi0.07O0.8 nanotubes activated in a K2SO4 electrolyte exhibit highly capable capacitance behavior with high specific capacitance (334.5 F g–1 at 1 A g–1) and superior cycling stability (88% capacitance retention of the initial after 60,000 cycles). The well-designed α-K0.2MnTi0.07O0.8-based supercapacitor device exhibits an energy density of 25.16 Wh kg–1 at 1600 W kg–1. The morphological electrode-structured designer could be a promising attempt for applications in energy-related fields and even beyond power and storage sources.

Background Ginsenoside compound K (GC-K) potentially alleviates ulcerative colitis involved in gut microbiota, which is significantly associated with the occurrence and development of colitis. However, the effect and mechanism of GC-K on anti-colitis in relation to gut microbiota are not clear. This study focused on the prevention and mechanism of GC-K on Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis of mice pertinent to gut microbiota. Methods DSS was used to establish a chronic colitis mouse model. Body weight analysis, colon length measurement, HE staining, and inflammatory factors levels were processed in animal experiments. Flow cytometry was employed to analyze Th17/Treg cells in the mouse spleen and blood. 16S rRNA sequencing was utilized to analyze gut microbiota. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment was employed to verify the anti-colitis efficacy of GC-K by reshaping gut microbiota. Results GC-K significantly relieved colitis-related symptoms due to decreased disease activity index (DAI) scores, spleen weight, and increased colon length. Additionally, the tight junction proteins were increased, and the pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-17, were decreased after GC-K treatment. Furthermore, Bacteroides spp. significantly increased after modeling. Moreover, FMT experiments confirmed that GC-K-driven gut microbiota greatly relieved DSS-induced colitis. Conclusion GC-K alleviated colitis via the modulation of gut microbiota. Graphical Abstract

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a multifunctional carbon nanomaterial have drawn great attention in the field of energy attribute to quantum size, various functional groups and unique physicochemical properties. In this work, the CQDs were prepared from soybean by a simple hydrothermal method , then further pyrolyzed into honeycomb carbon (HC), spherical pore carbon (SC) and bulk porous carbon (BC) with the assistance of templates, respectively. As the anode materials in potassium ion battery (PIBs), HC delivered a high specific capacity of 280.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and a superior rate performance (136 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), ascribing to its abundant surface active sites of potassium ion storage and special structures conducive to potassium ion diffusion. This study provides an excellent anode for PIBs from a simple route to construct CQDs-derived carbon.

Curcumin (CUR) is a natural bioactive compound that has attracted attention as a “golden molecule” due to its therapeutic properties against several types of tumors. Nonetheless, the antitumor application of CUR is hampered due to its extremely low aqueous solubility and chemical instability. Herein, a novel type of CUR-loaded polymeric micelles with intracellular K+-responsive controlled-release properties is designed and developed. The polymeric micelles are self-assembled by poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acryloylamidobenzo-15-crown-5-co-N, N-dimethylacrylamide)-b-DSPE (PNDB-b-DSPE) block copolymers, and CUR. CUR is successfully loaded into the micelles with a CUR loading content of 6.26 wt%. The proposed CUR-PNDB-DSPE polymeric micelles exhibit a significant CUR release in simulated intracellular fluid due to the formation of 2 : 1 ‘‘sandwich’’ host–guest complexes of 15-crown-5 and K+, which lead to the hydrophilic outer shell of micelles to collapse and the drug to rapidly migrate out of the micelles. In vitro, the B16F10 cell experiment indicates that CUR-PNDB-DSPE micelles exhibit a high cellular uptake and excellent intracellular drug release in response to the intracellular K+ concentration. Moreover, CUR-PNDB-DSPE micelles show high cytotoxicity to B16F10 cells compared to free CUR and CUR-PEG-DSPE micelles. The polymeric micelles with intracellular K+-responsive controlled release properties proposed in this study provide a new strategy for designing novel targeted drug delivery systems for CUR delivery for cancer treatment.

Background and Purpose Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common metabolic and endocrine disease affecting women of reproductive age. Due to its complex aetiology, there is no currently effective cure for PCOS. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity is significantly decreased in PCOS patients, and BAT activation has beneficial effects in animal models of PCOS. Here, we investigated the effect of ginsenoside compound K (CK) in an animal model of PCOS and its mechanism of BAT activation. Experimental Approach Primary brown adipocytes, Db/Db mice and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-induced PCOS rats were used. The core body temperature, oxygen consumption, energy metabolism related gene and protein expression were assessed to identify the effect of CK on overall energy metabolism. Oestrous cycle, serum sex hormone, ovarian steroidogenic enzyme gene expression and ovarian morphology were also evaluated following CK treatment. Key Results Our results indicated that CK treatment could significantly protect against body weight gain in Db/Db mice via BAT activation. Furthermore, we found that CK treatment could normalize hyperandrogenism, oestrous cyclicity, normalize steroidogenic enzyme expression and decrease the number of cystic follicles in PCOS rats. Interestingly, as a potential endocrine intermediate, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand-14 protein (CXCL14) was significantly up-regulated following CK administration. In addition, exogenous CXC14 supplementation was found to reverse DHEA-induced PCOS in a phenotypically similar manner to CK treatment. Conclusion and Implications In summary, CK treatment significantly activates BAT, increases CXCL14 expression and ameliorates PCOS. These findings suggest that CK might be a potential drug candidate for PCOS treatment.

The concentration of potassium ion is an important indicator for human health, and its abnormality is often accompanied by various diseases. However, most tools currently used to study potassium ion transport are low throughput. Herein, we reported a new K + fluorescent nanoprobe CP1-KS with high selectivity and sensitivity to K + (fluorescence enhanced factor was up to 9.91 at 20 mM K + ). The polymeric fluorescent probe CP1-KS was composed of the small-molecular K + indicator KS and amphiphilic copolymer CP1. This sensor can be easily and uniformly dispersed in cell culture medium and is suitable for high throughput analysis. To assess the utility of the probe CP1-KS in biological field, this probe was employed as an extracellular fluorescent probe to monitor the efflux of K + from cells ( E coli , B. Subtilis 168, Hela and MCF-7 cells) under various stimulation including lysozyme, nigericin, digitonin, and ATP. Results demonstrated that CP1-KS is an effective analysis tool for extracellular K + concentration. We believe that the nanoprobe has great potential in antibacterial drug screening, K + ionophore function, K + channel activity, cell membrane permeability analysis or other K + related field in the future.

To combat the kumquat rot triggered by food-borne microorganisms, this work pioneered the concept of pseudo-pasteurization and integrated it with packaging technology to develop a novel antibacterial packaging film for the storage and preservation of kumquats. In detail, ZnO-doped carbon nanoparticles (ZnO/C) with excellent photothermal properties were first constructed by annealing the ZIF-8 precursor, and then incorporated into the K-carrageenan (KC) matrix as a filler to obtain a series of ZnO/C-KC nanocomposite films. The as-prepared ZnO/C-KC films exhibited the outstanding antibacterial properties (Antibacterial rate ≥99.8%) by virtue of the synergistic effect between NIR-induced autogenous heat and coexisting ZnO components, wherein the equilibrium temperature (60–62 °C) and holding time (5 min) of the film sterilization were significantly lower than that of the traditional pasteurization . The extended shelf-life of kumquats further confirmed the enhanced preservation capacity of ZnO/C-KC films. Furthermore, with the embedding of ZnO/C particles, although the color and transparency of films were slightly lost, the tensile strength, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and barrier ability have been improved to varying degrees. Finally, the qualified safety of films was also verified through hemolysis and cell cytotoxicity experiments. The successful construction of this antibacterial film may provide new ideas for the innovation of traditional pasteurization and the functionalization of packaging films.

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?A styrene yield of 91.4% was found for 10% k/CeO2at 500 °C and CO2-O2mixed atmosphere. The excellent catalytic performance of 10% k/CeO2is attributed to the alkali metal oxide modified cerium oxide and carbon dioxide induced oxygen vacancies to promote the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. What is the implication of the main finding? The proposed ODH strategy by using oxygen vacancies enriched catalysts offers an important insight into the efficient dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene at mild conditions.AbstractOxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) is an alternative for styrene (ST) production compared to the direct dehydrogenation process. However, ODH with O2or CO2suffers from either over-oxidation or endothermic property/low ethylbenzene conversion. Herein, we proposed an ODH process with a CO2-O2mixture atmosphere for the efficient conversion of ethylbenzene (EB) into styrene. A thermoneutral ODH is possible by the rationalizing of CO2/O2molar ratios from 0.65 to 0.66 in the temperature range of 300 to 650 °C. K modification is favorable for ethylbenzene dehydrogenation, and 10%K/CeO2achieved the highest ethylbenzene dehydrogenation activity due to the enhanced oxygen mobility and CO2adsorbability. The catalyst achieved 90.8% ethylbenzene conversion and 97.5% styrene selectivity under optimized conditions of CO2-4O2oxidation atmosphere, a temperature of 500 °C, and a space velocity of 5.0 h−1. It exhibited excellent catalytic and structural stability during a 50 h long-term test. CO2induces oxygen vacancies in ceria and promotes oxygen exchange between gaseous oxygen and ceria. The ethylbenzene dehydrogenation in CO2-O2follows a Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) reaction mechanism via Ce3+/Ce4+redox pairs. The proposed ODH strategy by using oxygen vacancies enriched catalysts offers an important insight into the efficient dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene at mild conditions. Keywords:ethylbenzene;oxidative dehydrogenation;ceria;CO2

The K + -doped (Na 1− x K x )GdF 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ upconversion materials were successfully synthesized by solvothermal method. The doping of K + was testified to have great influences on improving upconversion properties as it directly affects the morphology of the material matrix. In addition, by coating the doped material with a homogeneous shell layer, a newly developed core–shell (Na 0.9 K 0.1 )GdF 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ @NaGdF 4 nanomaterials were produced. Surprisingly, its light emission intensity was 2 times of that for the uncoated material, although the crystal structure and the emission color of the nanoparticles did not change. The upconversion mechanism has also been studied, and the results show that there is a two-photon mechanism of (Na 1− x K x )GdF 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ . The work provides a new strategy for enhancing the luminescence density of upconversion materials by coating a homogeneous shell after doping.

Sodium-ion batteries (NaIBs) have attracted extraordinary attentions as a promising scalable energy storage alternative to current lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), owing to their natural abundance and low costs. Sodium trititanate (Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 ) is a promising material as the material of NaIBs with low potential and high theoretical capacitance. In order to better understand their service performance when utilized in rechargeable NaIBs, studies on thermodynamic properties of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 are indispensable. However, an extensive literature review revealed that the heat capacity of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 is established with divergences, especially for high-temperature region. Therefore, the 99.5% purity of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 powder was first Synthesized through solid-state reaction with sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as raw materials. The as-prepared samples were used to measure the heat capacity from 573 to 1323 K which was carried out with multihigh temperature calorimeter (MHTC) 96 line. The temperature dependence of heat capacity was modeled as a function: Cp =255.51073 + 0.06059 T − 3.86912 × 106 T −2 (J mol −1 K −1 ) (298.15 - 1403 K), and then used for computing changes in enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy. Heat capacity of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 from 0 to 1403 K was given for future application of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 in rechargeable batteries.
