Highly Conductive and Stable Composite Polymer Electrolyte with Boron Nitride Nanotubes for All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Qian He,Xiongxiong Liu,Guang Xiao,Xuhua He,Wenbin Gong,Lingfei Tang,Qi Chen,Qichong Zhang,Yagang Yao

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have emerged as the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. However, the unsatisfactory ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes at room temperature has impeded the advancement of solid-state batteries. In this work, a multifunctional composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is developed by incorporating boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) into polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP). BNNTs, with a high aspect ratio, trigger the dissociation of Li salts, thus generating a greater population of mobile Li + , and establishing long-distance Li + transport pathways. PVDF-HFP/BNNT exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 8.0 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and a Li + transference number of 0.60. Moreover, a Li//Li symmetric cell based on PVDF-HFP/BNNT demonstrates robust cyclic performance for 3400 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 . The ASSLMB formed from the assembly of PVDF-HFP/BNNT with LiFePO 4 and Li exhibits a capacity retention of 93.2% after 850 cycles at 0.5C and 25 °C. The high-voltage all-solid-state LiCoO 2 /Li cell based on PVDF-HFP/BNNT also exhibits excellent cyclic performance, maintaining a capacity retention of 96.4% after 400 cycles at 1C and 25 °C. Furthermore, the introduction of BNNTs is shown to enhance the thermal conductivity and flame retardancy of the CSE.

Enhanced cycling performance for all-solid-state lithium ion battery with LiFePO4 composite cathode encapsulated by poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) based polymer electrolyte

Huihui Zeng,Xiaoxiao Ji,Fangchang Tsai,Qunchao Zhang,Tao Jiang,Robert K.Y. Li,Hengchong Shi,Shifang Luan,Dean Shi

The poor contact between the cathode and the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is one of the primary causes for the low specific capacities of lithium ion batteries . In this work, a composite cathode material containing LiFePO 4 nanoparticles encapsulated by PEG-based polymer electrolyte (coated LiFePO 4 ) are prepared in order to increase the interfacial contact area between SPE and cathode materials. The LiFePO 4 /SPE/Li half-cell battery with coated LiFePO 4 (C-LFP) and uncoated LiFePO 4 (U-LFP) are assembled and their electrochemical performances are studied. The optimal LiFePO 4 /SPE weight ratio in the composites cathode is 60/15. When the cathode thickness is 100 μm, the specific capacity of battery with C-LFP can reach up to 138 mAhg −1 , which is 2.5 times higher than that with U-LFP under 1C charge-and-discharge rate at 60 °C. Moreover, the capacity retention of C-LFP is 91% after 300 cycles, while that of U-LFP is only 18%. Large cracks emerge in the cathode with U-LFP, while no damage can be found in that with C-LFP after 300 cycles at 1C. This should be ascribed to the existence of polymer buffer layers among LiFePO 4 nanoparticles to alleviate the stress induced by their volume changes during the charge-and-discharge cycling process. This enhancement effect increases along with the increase of cathode thickness. When the cathode thickness increases up to 200 μm, the specific capacity of battery with C-LFP cathode is almost 4 times higher than that with U-LFP.

Synergetic effects of FeNC and LiFePO4 in modified separator on improved adsorption and catalytic conversion reaction of soluble LiPSs for Lithium-sulfur batteries

Zehao Shi,Tiancheng Wang,Zeyuan Shi,Shengrui Cui,Zengqi Zhang,Wei Liu,Yongcheng Jin

“Shuttle effect” is a serious obstacle in the development of high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries and modified separator is considered an effective strategy to prevent the shuttle effect of soluble polysulfides (LiPSs). Herein, we demonstrate a modified polypropylene (PP) separator composed of nitrogen-doped carbon coated LiFePO 4 (NC-LFP), Ketjen black carbon (KB) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) (NC-LFP interlayer), which can improve adsorption and catalytic conversion toward LiPSs. The analysis shows that NC-LFP interlayer could effectively adsorb LiPSs and therefore suppress its shuttle effects due to the Fe N C functional groups in the nitrogen-doped carbon coated on LFP polar particles. The DFT analysis and the electrochemical performance test demonstrate the Fe N C functional groups in NC-LFP interlayer provide lower activation barrier for catalytic conversion reaction of LiPSs to Li 2 S and vice versa. The coin cells with NC-LFP modified separator exhibit an initial discharge specific capacity of 907 mAh/g at 1C. After 500 cycles, the specific capacity is 702 mAh/g with a retention rate of 79.5 %. Moreover, at 8C rate, the discharge-specific capacity of 667.5 mAh/g is achieved. The use of NC-LFP interlayer modified separators realizes lithium-sulfur batteries with long-cycle life and high-rate performance, providing an emerging strategy for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Molten salt of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) as electrolyte for the natural graphite/LiFePO4 lithium-ion cell

Fei Xu,Chengyong Liu,Wenfang Feng,Jin Nie,Hong Li,Xuejie Huang,Zhibin Zhou

The binary eutectic mixture of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) with a molar ratio of x LiFSI : x KFSI   =   0.41: 0.59 has been investigated as molten salt electrolyte for natural graphite/LiFePO 4 lithium-ion cells at 80   °C. The electrochemical performances of the Li/natural graphite, Li/LiFePO 4 , and natural graphite/LiFePO 4 cells using this molten salt electrolyte have been evaluated, in terms of cycling performances and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) at 80   °C. Both the Li/natural graphite and Li/LiFePO 4 cells show good cycling performances. The initial specific capacities after conditioning for the natural graphite and LiFePO 4 electrodes are 353 and 150 mAh g −1 , respectively, and the corresponding capacity retention rates are 98% and 97%, respectively, after 100 cycles at 80   °C, except for a large irreversible capacity (162 mAh g −1 ) observed for the natural graphite at the first cycle for forming solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film. The natural graphite/LiFePO 4 lithium-ion cell using this molten salt electrolyte shows a low capacity in the range of 71–86 mAh g −1 , due to the large irreversible capacity (71 mAh g −1 ) at the first cycle, but it shows a good cycleability after the first cycle, and provides a specific capacity of 71 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 80   °C. The variations of cycling performances of these cells can be well correlated with their impedance evolution with cycling.

Herein, porous activated carbon was synthesized from highland barley straw by phosphoric acid activation and used as a conductive agent for LiFePO 4 cathodes. The morphology and microstructure are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The results show that the porous activated carbon convenient three-dimensional porous microstructure. Compared with the conventional conductive agent carbon black Super P, the obtained porous activated carbon presents a high capacity of 153.63 mA h g -1 at 0.1 C, as well as an excellent rate performance and cycling stability. The simple method for the preparation of porous activated carbon as a conductive agent with an excellent electrochemical performance opens up a new opportunity of LiFePO4 cathodes for widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries.

One-step fabrication of nanosized LiFePO4/expanded graphite composites with a particle growth inhibitor and enhanced electrochemical performance of aqueous Li-ion capacitors

Shixian Lv,Xugang Zhang,Pengxue Zhang,Junyu Xiang,Yawen Li,Shen Qiu,Chuanli Qin

It is reported that olivine-type lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for Li-ion batteries is one of the most widely utilized cathode materials, but its high-power applications are limited due to its intrinsically poor ion transfer rate and conductivity. Therefore, it is highly desired to fabricate LFP Li-ion capacitors (LICs) with high power performance and excellent cyclic reversibility, especially in safe, low cost and environmentally friendly aqueous electrolytes. Here, we fabricate LFP/expanded graphite (EG) nanocomposites by a one-step process, in which polyethylene glycol (PEG) is used as the particle growth inhibitor combined with vacuum infiltration of the LFP precursor into EG as a conductive sub-phase, and further investigate their high-power performance in aqueous LICs. Embedding spherical LFP nanoparticles with well-controlled size and agglomeration into the pores of EG and wrapping LFP nanoparticles by EG films contribute to the rapid electron and ion diffusion in LFP/EG composites, resulting in excellent cyclic reversibility and rate performance of LFP/EG composites. The aqueous LFP/EG//active carbon (AC) LICs were assembled in LiNO3 electrolytes with LFP/EG composites and AC as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively. The optimal LIC shows a power density of 2367.9 W kg−1 at an energy density of 6.5 W h kg−1, dramatically favorable rate characteristics and excellent cycle life with 82.1% capacitance retention of its primary capacitance at 2 A g−1 after 6000 cycles, markedly higher than those of the commercial LFP LIC. The presented aqueous LFP/EG//AC LICs with excellent electrochemical performance are expected to have broad high-power appliances that are cost-sensitive and highly secure.

Study on a newly proposed ZnO-LiFePO4 piezoelectric composite-based lithium-ion sieve for extracting lithium from saline lake brine under natural conditions

Qian Liu,Meitang Liu,Haisheng Hu,Xiaoyu Song,Lu Xiong,Xinyu Li

Lithium is a crucial strategic resource that plays a pivotal and instrumental role in facilitating the advancement of new energy technologies. The rapid growth of the renewable energy industry has resulted in a critical shortage of lithium salt supplies. The extraction of lithium from saline lake brine is characterized by its low energy consumption and cost-effectiveness, making it a prominent area of research in the field. However, the development and widespread application of lithium extraction technology under natural settings have tremendous relevance for lithium extraction in this region because of the severe natural environment and limited industrial base in the majority of saline lake areas. In this paper, zinc oxide with piezoelectric properties was prepared using hydrothermal method, and it was combined with lithium iron phosphate through sintering method to create a piezoelectric adsorbent capable of responding to mechanical energy. The adsorbent can capture wave energy in the saline lake and generate polarized electrons to accelerate theredox process, resulting in selective lithium ion adsorption. After 48 h of reaction with a 20 % zinc oxide loading and a sintering temperature of 200℃, the capacity of the piezoelectric adsorbents for lithium increased to 35.27 mg/g, as shown by experimental results. This study proposes a novel method for extracting lithium directly from saline lake brines under natural conditions, as well as a new application of piezoelectric materials.

Self-shutdown function induced by sandwich-like gel polymer electrolytes for high safety lithium metal batteries

Binxuan Xie,Shimou Chen,Yong Chen,Lili Liu

Lithium-ion batteries using either liquid electrolytes or solid electrolytes have been extensively studied in recent years, but both of these encounter safety risks such as flammability of liquid electrolytes and uncontrolled dendrite growth. In this study, a sandwich gel polymer electrolyte (SGPE) with a thermal shutdown function was developed to resolve the safety issues. By adjustment of surface pore size of the SGPE, lithium dendrite growth is suppressed. Due to the sandwich structure design, the SGPE can effectively respond to an overheating environment, regulate lithium ion transport and inhibit the penetration of lithium dendrite, demonstrating a remarkably high safety of the batteries, especially at high temperature or under thermal runaway circumstances. In addition, the LiFePO4/SGPE/Li battery exhibits a high reversible capacity of 135 mA h g−1 at 1C and maintains high capacity retention (>95%) after 200 charge–discharge cycles. This study shows a great advantage to handle thermal abuse and a stable lithium anode, suggesting a promising approach to the high safety lithium metal batteries.

Flexible Composite Solid Electrolyte Facilitating Highly Stable “Soft Contacting” Li–Electrolyte Interface for Solid State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Luyi Yang,Zijian Wang,Yancong Feng,Rui Tan,Yunxing Zuo,Rongtan Gao,Yan Zhao,Lei Han,Ziqi Wang,Feng Pan

A flexible composite solid electrolyte membrane consisting of inorganic solid particles (Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 ), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and boronized polyethylene glycol (BPEG) is prepared and investigated. This membrane exhibits good stability against lithium dendrite, which can be attributed to its well-designed combination components: the compact inorganic lithium ion conducting layer provides the membrane with good mechanical strength and physically barricades the free growth of lithium dendrite; while the addition of planar BPEG oligomers not only disorganizes the crystallinity of the PEO domain, leading to good ionic conductivity, but also facilitates a “soft contact” between interfaces, which not only chemically enables homogeneous lithium plating/stripping on the lithium metal anode, but also reduces the polarization effects. In addition, by employing this membrane to a LiFePO 4 /Li cell and testing its galvanostatic cycling performances at 60 °C, capacities of 158.2 and 94.2 mA h g −1 are delivered at 0.1 C and 2 C, respectively.

Lanthanum-doped LiFePO4 cathode materials for lithium ion battery by citric acid-assisted carbothermal reduction method using acid-washed iron red as raw material

Cong Jun,Luo Shao-hua,Li Peng-yu,Li Kun,Wang Ya-feng,Yan Sheng-xue,Li Peng-wei,Chen Huan-huan

To realize the high value–added utilization of acid-washed iron red, in this paper, acid-washed iron red is used as raw material. Aiming at the problem of low conductivity of iron-based lithium ion batteries (LIBs) LiFePO 4 /C materials, different metal ions are doped in the iron position, and the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the obtained material are systematically studied. Here, LiFePO 4 /C is synthesized through simple carbothermal reduction method using acid-washed iron red as the iron source. On this basis, La (1%, 2%, 3%) doping modification is carried out. Then doped modification is performed on this basis, preferably 2% La-doped LiFePO 4 /C materials. The XRD patterns show that the diffraction peaks of the samples prepared at all doping amounts can be perfectly matched with the standard card ( PDF # 40–1499), and there is no impurity peak, all of which are pure phases. According to the refined data, it is clear that minor amount of La has successfully replaced the position of Fe and incorporated into the lattice. Electrochemical tests show that LiFe 0.98 La 0.02 PO 4 /C has the highest charge and discharge capacity of 146.5/138.2 mAh·g −1 in the first cycle at 0.5C, and the reversible specific capacity of 136.5 mAh·g −1 remains after 50 cycles. Furthermore, the first-principles calculations more strongly confirm that La doping can significantly improve the defects of low electronic conductivity of LiFePO 4 .

A sustainable strategy for spent Li-ion battery regeneration: microwave-hydrothermal relithiation complemented with anode-revived graphene to construct a LiFePO4/MWrGO cathode material

Zhenyu Jiang,Jing Sun,Pingshan Jia,Wenlong Wang,Zhanlong Song,Xiqiang Zhao,Yanpeng Mao

With the upcoming retirement of widely employed LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries, a sustainable strategy for recycling their valuable components is urgent. In this work, spent LFP cathodes were revived through a microwave-hydrothermal relithiation process, complemented with microwave-reduced graphene oxide (MWrGO) derived from spent graphite anodes, to form a composite LFP/MWrGO cathode material. The defect–repair process, performed under optimal conditions (150 °C for 1 h), allows LFP cathodes to gain better morphology and electrochemical performance with a specific capacity of 150.5 mA h g−1 at 0.1C. The introduction of anode-revived graphene via electrostatic self-assembly helps form a hierarchical structure and conductive network for regenerated LFP, enabling fast ion and electron transfer for redox reactions. When doped with 5 wt% graphene, the regenerated LFP/MWrGO composite displays an enhanced specific capacity of 161.4 mA h g−1 and high capacity retention (i.e., 94.9% over 100 cycles) at 0.2C. Laboratory-scale economic and environmental analyses indicate that the entire regeneration process has a favorable atom economy of recovery with low energy/time/reagent consumption and greenhouse gas emission, owing to the featured microwave-material interaction. This study provides a green facile method as a reference for the regeneration of spent LFP batteries, which can be extended to other types of batteries, and promotes the sustainability of Li-ion battery downstream technology.

A simple green method for in-situ selective extraction of Li from spent LiFePO4 batteries by synergistic effect of deep-eutectic solvent and ozone

Shujie Tang,Ziyue Yang,Mei Zhang,Min Guo

Efficient and clean extraction lithium (Li) from spent LiFePO 4 batteries (LIBs) still remains a challenge. In this paper, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on ethylene glycol (EG) and choline chloride (CC), combined with ozone (O 3 ) from air source, realized highly selective leaching Li from LiFePO 4 in situ for the first time. The influence of experimental parameters on Li and Fe leaching efficiencies ( η Li , η Fe ) were studied by orthogonal and single-factor tests, and η Li  ≥ 92.2% while η Fe  ≤ 1.6% were obtained under the optimal conditions (6 h, 20 g/L, 8EG:1CC, 40 °C). The impurity Fe in the filtrate was completely precipitated as amorphous FePO 4 ·3H 2 O after heating (150 °C, 0.5 h), achieving a pure Li-solution. The leaching mechanism elucidated that the synergistic effect (acidification, replacement and oxidation reaction) between the DES and O 3 determined the phase transition of Li and Fe, promoting the efficient selective extraction of Li and in-situ separation of Fe (FePO 4 ). The average η Li and η Fe were separately 85.4% and 2.0% after ten cycles of the 8EG:1CC, indicative of its’ excellent reusability. Meanwhile, LiCl was recovered from the filtrate. This process avoided the use of strong acid/alkali and discharge of waste water, providing fresh perspectives on the green recovery of spent LiFePO 4 batteries.
