Separation of soy isoflavones from soy sauce residue by MIL-100(Fe)

Yunhui Cheng,Shihua Luo,Fuqi Huang,Xiangyi Yang,Maolong Chen,Ye Jiao,Li Wen,Zhou Xu

Soy sauce residue (SSR) is a valuable biological resource, which contains soy isoflavones (SIs) with antioxidant activity and can be used to scavenge radicals. Herein, MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized for the extraction of SIs from SSR. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, the adsorption capacity of MIL-100(Fe) for SIs was 51.81 mg/g, which could achieve a purity of 56.17% and a recovery of 93.8%. These results demonstrated MIL-100(Fe) possessed effective properties of adsorption and purification for SIs. The content of SIs in the purified product was 167 times than that of SSR. The purified total SIs had a good antioxidant activity. The established method had a good scavenging ability toward 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, with IC 50 values of 0.177, 0.116 and 0.082 mg/mL, respectively. Besides, the ferrous ion chelating potency was better than others, with IC 50 values of 0.63 ± 0.0044 mg/mL. The established method was suitable for large-scale separation of purified total SIs and provided a reference for purification of bioactive factors from complex substrates.

Synthesis of high-crystallinity MIL-125 with outstanding xylene isomer separation performance

Liping Yang,Jiacheng Xing,Danhua Yuan,Lin Li,Yunpeng Xu,Zhongmin Liu

MIL-125 is a metal-organic framework with great potential for the adsorption and separation of xylene isomers. However, MIL-125 is usually synthesized under anhydrous and anaerobic conditions. In this study, homogeneously shaped and highly crystalline MIL-125 was synthesized by introducing water-resistant titanium-containing oligomers into the synthesis process. With the assistance of the novel oligomers, MIL-125 can be synthesized in the presence of water, which meets batch-production requirements. The adsorption separation performance of the obtained highly crystalline MIL-125 was also significantly enhanced. The para- xylene/ meta- xylene selectivity can reach 13.5 in mesitylene, which is higher than the selectivity values of most previously reported para -selective adsorbents. The MIL-125 xylene separation performance was verified using both batch adsorption and breakthrough experiments in the liquid phase. In addition, the influence of the solvent effect was evaluated through microcalorimetric experiments, liquid-phase adsorption experiments, and theoretical calculations.

Anatase TiO2@MIL-101(Cr) nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Yuan Tang,Xiaohong Yin,Manman Mu,Yue Jiang,Xiaoli Li,Hao Zhang,Tianwei Ouyang

A series of anatase TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) was synthesized using the solvothermal method for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The characterization of the composites showed that they had an octahedral shape that was similar to that of MIL-101(Cr), but the particle size was reduced to about 300–500 nm. The amount and surface area of the TiO 2 in the composites jointly influenced the photocatalytic degradation; in optimal conditions, 59 % TiO 2 @MIL-101(Cr) could achieve 99.4 % BPA degradation in 240 min under UV irradiation. This superior photocatalytic performance was the result of the effective separation of electron-hole pairs and a narrow band gap. Moreover, the optimal composite exhibited excellent stability, indicating its suitability for reuse. Reasonable pathways of BPA degradation were proposed based on the detected intermediates during the degradation, where the oxidative radical O 2 − played a dominant role.

A novel heterogeneous MOF membrane MIL-121/118 with selectivity towards hydrogen

Jianhua Liu,Yumei Wang,Hao Guo,Songjie Fan

A novel heterogeneous membrane-MIL-121/118 were successfully synthesized on the surface of macroporous glass frits by increasing the content of aluminum nitrate in the starting solution. For the gas mixtures of H 2 /CO 2 , H 2 /CH 4 and H 2 /N 2 , the membrane exhibits permselectivity towards H 2 . Specifically, the separation factors are 10.7, 8.9 and 7.5 respectively with average H 2 permeance of 7.83 × 10 −8 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 . As far as we know there is no report of any heterogeneous MOF membranes and the diversity of membrane structure certainly facilitates its versatility.

Preparation of Efficient BiOBr/MIL-88B(Fe) Composites with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activities

Xinxin Yue,Weilin Guo,Xianghui Li,Xiaomei Gao,Guangyou Zhang

In this study, a novel composite containing an iron based metal-organic framework (MOF) and BiOBr was successfully synthesized by a simple method, and was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectra, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of BiOBr/MIL-88B(Fe) composites and the pure materials were evaluated by measuring the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light. The results show that the composite exhibits better photocatalytic activities than pure materials, which can be ascribed to the high adsorption capacity of MIL-88B(Fe) and the enhanced separation of photogenerated charge carriers from assembly of MIL-88B(Fe) on BiOBr. And the effects of various operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, medium pH, the mass ratio of BiOBr, and MIL-88B(Fe) and the dye initial concentration on the degradation of RhB have been studied.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized MIL-101 as a highly recyclable catalyst for esterification

Yindi Zang,Jing Shi,Fumin Zhang,Yijun Zhong,Weidong Zhu

The sulfoxy or sulfonic acid-functionalized MIL-101 catalyst was prepared by either post-functionalization or pre-modification of the organic linkers with the functionalized ligands, respectively, the latter is the so-called one-pot synthesis method. These catalysts were systemically characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption, acid–base titration, and FT-IR techniques and applied in the liquid-phase esterification of monocarboxylic acids with monohydric alcohols. The results show that the sulfonic acid-functionalized MIL-101 (S-MIL-101) prepared by the one-pot synthesis method possesses a higher catalytic activity in the esterification than its counterpart the sulfoxy acid-functionalized MIL-101 (S/MIL-101) prepared by the post-functionalized method, due to the fact that S-MIL101 has a higher acid loading and a high utilization efficiency of the functionalized acid sites. Moreover, S-MIL-101 is stable to leaching, behaves as a true heterogeneous catalyst, can be easily recovered by filtration, and can be reused five times in succession without any loss of its catalytic activity.

Enhanced Cataluminescence Sensor Based on SiO2/MIL-53(Al) for Detecting Isobutylaldehyde

Qianchun Zhang,Xixi Long,Shan Tang,Li Jiang,Zhaoru Ban,Yanju Chen,Runkun Zhang

A simple, rapid, and reliable method for detecting harmful gases is urgently required in environmental security fields. In this study, a highly effective cataluminescence sensor based on SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al) composites was developed to detect trace isobutylaldehyde. The sensor was designed using isobutylaldehyde to generate an interesting cataluminescence phenomenon in SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al). Under optimized conditions, a positive linear relationship was observed between the signal intensity of the cataluminescence and isobutylaldehyde concentration. The isobutylaldehyde concentration range of 1.55–310 ppm responded well to the sensing test, with an excellent correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The minimum detectable concentration signal-to-noise ratio ( S/N = 3) was found to be 0.49 ppm. In addition, the sensor was effectively utilized for analyzing trace isobutylaldehyde; the analysis resulted in recoveries ranging from 83.4% to 105%, with relative standard deviations ( RSDs ) of 4.8% to 9.4%. Furthermore, the mechanism of cataluminescence between SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al) and isobutylaldehyde was explored using GC–MS analysis and density functional theory. We expect that this cataluminescence methodology will provide an approach for the environmental monitoring of isobutylaldehyde.

Highly efficient hexavalent chromium removal on polyethylenimine@NH2-MIL-101(Cr) composite

Zhenpeng Li,Dongmei Yan,Jun Li,Ziwei Mai,Fuchuan Huang

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is regarded as a water pollutant because of its high toxicity in aquatic environments. In this study, polyethyleneimine-functionalised NH2-MIL-101(Cr) (PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr)) was fabricated by a facile wet impregnation method, and its effectiveness at removing Cr(VI) from wastewater was systematically investigated. As suggested by the experimental findings, pH was a significant determinant of Cr(VI) uptake by the fabricated PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr). Preferable depiction of adsorption system was achievable with the Langmuir adsorption model and the pseudo-order 2 kinetic model. At 288, 298, and 308 K, the highest adsorbability values were 241.55, 310.56, and 408.16 mg g−1, respectively. Processes like electrostatic attraction, reduction and chelation helped promote the Cr(VI) elimination. SO42− ions had a relatively large impact on the Cr(VI) adsorption compared with other coexisting ions such as NO3−, Cl− and H2PO4−1. Because of its properties of high adsorption capacity and Cr(VI) detoxification, the potential of PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr) in the Cr(VI) elimination from wastewater appears to be promising.

Liquidizing crystal MIL-100(Fe) to coating silica powder for purifying wastewater

Shiyong Wei,Aijia Cao,Siyuan Huang,Yao Shen,Ting Lei,Songmei Luo,Mingjun Cai,Wenjun Xiang,Anying Chen,Rui Wang

Although MIL-100(Fe) was regarded as an ideal material for the environmental remediation, it could not be applied in practical because of the potential eco-environmental risk and cost. In this work, a novelty strategy of liquidizing crystal MIL-100(Fe) was posted for the first time through inhibiting the crystallization process and forming physical MIL-100(Fe) gel. Due to this MIL-100(Fe) sol–gel, MIL-100(Fe) could easy cover on the surface of silica powder (SiO 2 ) through simple soaking operation. MIL-100(Fe) covering on SiO 2 (MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 ) could be quickly separated from wastewater spontaneously owing to the carrier of SiO 2 , even in a tank of 2.0 m, which made it possible for purifying wastewater in practical. MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 could remove phosphate with a removing ratio of closing 100 % at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, while more than 95 % towards methyl orange (MO). The removing ratio of MO by MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 did not obviously decrease when the concentration of MO increased to 100 mg/L. And the adsorption performance of phosphate did not affect by pH among 3.0–9.0. The adsorption amount exceeded 50 % of maximum adsorption capacity for phosphate within 30 min, while 90 % for MO. Monodentate mononuclear coordination could explain the adsorption of phosphate by MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 . The N atom in MO might be acted as Lewis acid to coordinate with MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 . After adsorption, the P-saturated and MO-saturated MIL-100(Fe)@SiO 2 could be effectively regenerated by the dilute HCl and NaOH solution, respectively. The recovery ratio of adsorption capacity for phosphate and MO were up to 97.7 % and 71.6 %.

Sensitive acetone detection at ppb levels using MIL-125(Ti) derived TiO2

Qian Wang,Tingting Wang,Yongwei Huang,Liang Cheng,Ting Yang,Yali Ma

The modulation of the crystal phase structure can change the band gap and chemisorbed oxygen content of the metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) materials, thereby optimizing the gas sensing properties of the material. Herein, the effect of TiO 2 with different crystal phase structures derived from MIL-125 (Ti) calcined at different temperatures on the gas-sensitive properties of acetone is investigated. The study indicates that despite anatase TiO 2 -400 (derived from MIL-125 (Ti) under calcination at 400℃) having a large specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancies, rutile TiO 2 -700 (derived from MIL-125 (Ti) under calcination at 700℃) exhibits superior gas sensitive performance with the high sensitivity, good selectivity, fast response times, and an ultra-low detection limit (200 ppb) for acetone (biomarker of diabetes). In-depth discussion shows that the excellent sensing performance can be attributed to the regulation of the crystal phase structure of TiO 2 that is favorable for narrowing of band gap, the increase of chemisorbed oxygen content and adsorption energy of acetone molecules. In addition, TiO 2 -700 has excellent properties for diabetes detection in simulation. Our findings help to understand the effect of the crystal phase structure of the material on gas sensitive performance, paving the way for designing excellent TiO 2 -based gas sensors.

Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using a BiVO4/MIL-88B(Fe) heterojunction

Ziwei Zhao,Qi Ling,Shangkun Deng,Ziliang Li,Jianguo Lv,Lei Yang,Chunbin Cao,Zhaoqi Sun,Miao Zhang

A type II heterostructured BiVO4/MIL-88B(Fe) composite was successfully synthesised for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) by a simple hydrothermal method. Thin film materials avoid secondary pollution of powder materials. The samples were characterised by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, and PL. The samples were also characterised for their optoelectronic properties. 3-BV/MIL-88B(Fe) (3 mmol BiVO4) was the most effective catalyst for the degradation of TC-HCl, achieving 92.1% removal at 75 min with a degradation rate constant of 22.79 × 10−3 min−1. Moreover, durability evaluation and TC-HCl degradation potential evaluation were also performed. We looked into how TC-HCl concentration, pH and ions affect the degradation results. In order to determine the active ingredients, experiments for trapping free radicals and EPR tests were performed. The results indicated that the main active species were h+ and ˙OH. It is proposed that a reasonable type-II heterostructure can help to explain the photocatalytic mechanism. The current study creates a stable photocatalytic system by compositing electrocatalytic and photocatalytic materials to achieve efficient antibiotic degradation and provides a viable strategy for future applications.

Persistent glutathione-depleting MFO@MIL nanoreactors enhance antitumor efficiency of skin scaffold

Wenjing Yang,Yibing Ji,Lang Li,Chenhang Ding,Wurikaixi Aiyiti,Feilong Xiong,Cijun Shuai

The efficacy of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related skin tumor therapies is significantly restricted by intracellular overexpressed glutathione (GSH) which is a free radical scavenger. Herein, a GSH-depleting and high ROS production nanoreactor (MFO@MIL) is constructed by in-situ loading manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) onto the iron-based metal organic frameworks (MIL-101). The MFO@MIL is then incorporated into polycaprolactone (PCL) to prepare a porous skin scaffold, aiming to continuously release of MFO@MIL and simultaneously regulate intracellular reducibility and ROS yield to enhance anti-tumor efficacy. Particularly, the MnFe2O4 with GSH peroxidase-like ability can persistently deplete GSH to decrease the consumption of hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated by Fenton reaction between MIL-101 with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Meanwhile, the depletion process of MnFe2O4 will produce Mn2+, which collaborates with the MIL-101 to continuously catalyze H2O2 to produce •OH, remarkably increasing •OH yield and enhancing anti-tumor efficacy. Results showed that the depletion rate of GSH by the scaffold reached 84.4% within 24 hours. The •OH yield of the scaffold is significantly higher than that of the scaffold loaded with MIL-101 alone. Systematic cell experiments demonstrated the powerful anti-tumor efficacy of the scaffold. This study proposes a versatile strategy to significantly enhance ROS-based anti-tumor efficacy and potentially extend it to multiple tumors.
