Photoactivatable carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs), typically based on transition-metal carbonyl complexes, have reliance on activation by UV or visible light that restricts their biomedical applications. To address this limitation, a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive nanoplatform is presented based on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) loading with manganese carbonyl complex Mn 2 (CO) 10 that concurrently releases CO and manganese ion (Mn 2+ ). With the UCNPs, the more tissue-penetrable NIR is used to locally generate UV light for photodecomposition of Mn 2 (CO) 10 into CO and manganese oxide (MnO X ), after which MnO X is reduced to Mn 2+ by the overexpressed glutathione in cancer cells. Moreover, the released Mn 2+ can serve as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent to monitor the NIR-controlled corelease of CO and Mn 2+ in real time. Therefore, this nanoplatform can provide a potential strategy for NIR-enabled spatiotemporally release of CO and Mn 2+ , enhancing the controlled delivery and biomedical application of CORMs.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising for optical encryption and anti-counterfeiting due to their tunable optoelectronic properties. However, conventional monochromatic photoluminescence systems are vulnerable to spectral decryption. This study proposes a universal strategy for synergistic anti-counterfeiting by fabricating (MTP) 2 MnBr 4 composites via solid-state melt processing. The controlled Mn 2+ doping (1–3 mol%) creates a dual-emission system with excitation-dependent colour modulation from green (520 nm) to red (620 nm) through selective activation pathways. The composites are processable into transparent bulk materials and printable inks, enabling multiscale anti-counterfeiting in currency, pharmaceuticals, and luxury packaging. This approach combines accessible materials with scalable protocols, offering a practical route for industrial security applications.

Mn 2+ doped CsPbCl 3 nanocrystals (Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs) show immense promise in lighting and display technologies owing to their outstanding optical characteristics. Nonetheless, high defect density, inefficient Mn 2+ doping, and poor structural robustness pose considerable challenges in the synthesis of Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and long-term stability. This study introduces an eco-friendly room-temperature post-treatment method utilizing MgCl 2 /oleylamine solution, boosting the total PLQY of the NCs from 65% to 98%, including a 30% increase for Mn 2+ emission. Additionally, the post-treatment significantly improves the NCs’ resilience against UV light, retaining 80% of their initial PL intensity after 120 hours of UV exposure. Comprehensive analyses including density functional theory simulation and temperature-dependent PL spectra suggested that the PLQY enhancement is due to the improved Mn 2+ doping efficiency and the effective passivation of native vacancy defects. The stability of the NCs is enhanced by replacing Pb 2+ with Mg 2+ and Mn 2+ , mitigating lattice distortions within the [PbCl 6 ] 4− octahedral framework. The color rendering index of white light-emitting diodes fabricated with the post-treated Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs achieves an exceptional value of 98. This work offers novel insights into the fabrication of high-PLQY Mn 2+ :CsPbCl 3 NCs, advancing the practical deployment of perovskite nanomaterials in various industries.

Nanoplatforms with high Mn 2+ coordination can display efficient T 1 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast enhancement. Herein, we firstly proposed an earth gravity-like method for enhanced interaction between Ferritin (Fn) and Mn 2+ by the growth of platinum nanoparticles (PNs) in Fn's cage structure via a biomineralization method. Fn has good biocompatibility and can provide a suitable growth site for PNs. PNs with negative charge have certain attraction to Mn 2+ with positive charge, improving Fn's loading capacity of Mn 2+ by attraction force and thus achieving efficient MRI contrast enhancement. In addition, PNs can be applied for efficient photothermal therapy (PTT) under near infrared ray (NIR) irradiation. Systemic delivery of this nanoplatform showed obvious MRI contrast enhancement and tumor progression inhibition after NIR irradiation, as well as no obvious side effects. Therefore, this nanoplatform has the potential to contribute to nanotheranostic for clinical transformation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

The rapid advancement of high-power solid-state lighting highlights the importance of developing phosphor ceramics with high resistance to thermal quenching of its luminescence. Herein, a series of Eu 2+ co-doping MgAl 2 O 4 : Mn 2+ phosphor ceramics were synthesized by spark plasma sintering. The significant green light enhancement at 516 nm is attributed to Eu 2+ -Mn 2+ energy transfer. The introduction of Eu 2+ increases the concentration of electron trap levels and improve the luminescence intensity at 423 K from 80% to 110%, compared with the counterparts at room temperature. The strong correlation between trap levels and oxygen vacancies was demonstrated by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Finally, the application demonstration of the optimized sample was explored through its integration with a 400 nm LED chip. This study proposes a strategy of leveraging trap levels to induce anti-thermal quenching behavior, providing some insights for the development of highly thermally stable phosphor ceramics.

Developing deep-red to near infrared (NIR) materials with multi-mode luminescence is challenging, which has promising utilization in various applications such as stress sensing and dynamic signature anti-counterfeiting. Different to the mainstream non-centrosymmetric mechanoluminescence (ML), a centrosymmetric perovskite compound (MgGeO 3 : Mn 2+ ) ML material is reported. Deep-red to NIR light (600–800 nm) from Mn 2+ ion is confirmed, which is attributed to the strong crystal field within the [MgO 6 ] polyhedron. The stiffness tetrahedral units and large defect accommodating space within the host are favorable for both ML and persistent luminescence (PersL). Mn 2+ ion is the only luminescent center, which is confirmed by spectral characterizations. Based on diffuse reflectance spectra, thermoluminescence analysis and density functional theory calculations, the inherent relationship between PersL, ML and PL is further clarified in detail. Due to the formation of Mn Mg defects, shallow trap significantly become shallower after adding Mn 2+ ions. This study reports a Mn 2+ -doped deep-red to NIR ML phosphor, and further describes the PersL and ML mechanisms via defect engineering regulation. In general, this study may also open up a new approach for the development of efficient NIR ML materials, and show various potential applications such as in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption fields.

The unavoidable Mn 2+ ions in pulp were considered in the flotation of rhodochrosite, and its effect and relative interaction mechanism on the floatability of calcite served as a typical gangue mineral were investigated through microflotation tests, zeta potential measurements, SEM-EDS detection, solution chemistry calculation, adsorption experiments, FTIR and XPS analyses. There exhibited a good separation performance of rhodochrosite against calcite with OHA collector, but in the presence of Mn 2+ ions, the floatability of calcite was closed to rhodochrosite within a pH of 8.0–10.0, which resulted in the separation difficulty between them. As evidenced, the surface of calcite could be modified by Mn 2+ ions, its isoelectric point shifted positively from 8.91 to 10.06, and Mn 2+ species detected on calcite surfaces were in close proximity to rhodochrosite. It indicated that MnCO 3 precipitates were generated on the surface of calcite. After modified by Mn 2+ , the calcite surface became more active and obviously increased the adsorption amount of OHA. It was verified from zeta potential and XPS analyses that Mn species on the surface of calcite were active sites for OHA adsorption, likely the hydroxamate group of OHA collector chelated with Mn species to form hydrophobic compounds. As a result, Mn 2+ ions in pulp would reduce the flotation selectivity of rhodochrosite from calcite, thus it is necessary to eliminate the disadvantage of Mn 2+ for strengthening flotation.

Single-crystalline (HPPh3)2MnCl4 was synthesized via antisolvent vapor diffusion. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/n space group and features a distorted tetrahedral [MnCl4P] core with Mn–Cl bond lengths of 2.3 Å and Cl–Mn–Cl bond angles ranging from 104–116°. Narrowband green emission (516 nm, full width at half-maximum (fwhm) = 47 nm, photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) = 49%) is achieved due to suppressed Jahn–Teller distortion, which results from the structural rigidity imparted by interligand π-π stacking and C–H···Cl hydrogen bonds. Spectroscopic and theoretical analyses confirm that the luminescence is dominated by the crystal field (10Dq = 8723 cm–1). Furthermore, spin-phonon engineering drives an anomalous thermal response, characterized by a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-mediated intensity enhancement between −50 and 75 °C (4T1–2E gap <1500 cm– 1) and Jahn–Teller quenching with an activation energy of 0.36 eV. For radiation detection, the crystal achieves record light yield (47950 photons/MeV) and ultralow detection limit (0.25 μGy·s–1). A 150 μm flexible scintillator screen demonstrates real-time X-ray imagingat clinical dose rates (1 μGy·s–1). This work establishes supramolecularly engineered Mn2+ phosphors as the next-generation scintillators.

Developing novel luminescent materials with ideal properties is an endless project, urged by growing requirements of advances in energy saving, healthy lighting and environmental friendliness. Herein, a series of ScCaOBO3:Ce3+,Mn2+ phosphors with excellent luminescence properties were synthesized by the high temperature solid state method. X-ray diffraction was applied to analyse the phase composition of the obtained phosphors. The morphology and dopant distribution were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), respectively. The Rietveld refinements and luminescence spectra indicate that Ce3+ preferentially occupies the Sc3+ site and produces a blue emission band at around 460 nm, which originates from the characteristic 5d–4f transitions, while Mn2+ preferentially occupies the Ca2+ site and emits red light due to its characteristic 4T1(4G)–6A1(6S) transitions. Upon excitation at 354 nm, both Ce3+ and Mn2+ emissions can be obtained and further investigations evidenced that the broad and intense light emission of Mn2+ located in the red spectral region is the result of energy transfer from Ce3+ to Mn2+. Theoretical calculations reveal that the energy transfer process from Ce3+ to Mn2+ is of the resonance type and is governed by electric dipole–dipole interactions. Since the ScCaOBO3:Ce3+,Mn2+ phosphors are capable of producing broadband emissions that widely cover the blue and red spectral regions, the introduction of a green light-emitting phosphor CMA:Tb3+ can conveniently generate high quality white light. Therefore, a white light-emitting diode device with extremely high color rendering indices, Ra = 93.7 and R9 = 91.9, was successfully obtained.

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is one of the most toxic and widely distributed subtypes of the 20 fumonisins, which has attracted much attention in food and feed safety. In this study, a convenient colorimetric immunoassay was proposed for the detection of FB1 based on Mn 2+ -mediated aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). After hydrolyzing of ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) by alkaline phosphatase (ALP), the generated ascorbic acid (AA) decomposes brown MnO 2 shell to Mn 2+ , which growth onto AuNPs and inducing the aggregation of AuNPs. The color change of the solution induced by aggregating of AuNPs can be read by smartphone to avoid subjective differences. The limit of detection (LOD) of this assay was 0.15 ng/mL and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.50 ng/mL. The method has not cross-reaction with other mycotoxins . The average recoveries of FB1 in the maize flour samples ranged from 86.4 % to 110.9 %, which met the food and Drug Administration (FDA) restrictions on FBS in agricultural products. The colorimetric immunoassay can be potentially used for mycotoxin-related food safety monitoring.

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides are promising for solid-state lighting and optical encryption because of their strong quantum confinement and structural versatility. However, achieving precise and independent regulation of multiple emissive channels in a single-component host remains challenging. Here, we report Sb 3+ /Mn 2+ -co-doped (C 4 H 12 N) 2 ZnCl 4 , which exhibits dual emission centered at 520 nm from Mn 2+ and 670 nm from Sb 3+ -associated self-trapped excitons under 365 nm excitation. The two bands show distinct decay lifetimes of 0.83 ms and 7.7 μs, respectively, consistent with independent emissive pathways. Importantly, the emission color reversibly changes from green to orange-red across a series of solvents with different polarities. Combined with the dual-band emission, this solvent-responsive behavior enables multichannel optical logic operations and information encryption. This work offers a route to multifunctional 0D hybrid halides featuring spectrally and kinetically differentiated emission channels.

Persistent luminescence (PerL) materials have garnered immense research interest on account of their distinctive luminescent features, and the rational design of such materials together with the elucidation of their underlying PerL mechanisms remain prominent research frontiers. Nevertheless, realizing tunable multicolor PerL within a single-phase material still poses a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a novel Mn 2+ -doped germanate glass and glass ceramic (GC) with tunable PerL. In the pristine glass, abundant oxygen vacancy defects enable intense red PerL with a persistence time exceeding 420 s. After heat treatment, ZnAl 2 O 4 nanocrystals are homogeneously precipitated within the glass matrix, accompanied by the generation of new defects; as a result, the derived GC material exhibits green PerL that also persists over 420 s. Owing to divergent excitation spectral profiles of Mn 2+ centers residing in these two dissimilar coordination environments, the GC sample achieves reversible green-to-red PerL emission simply by modulating the excitation wavelength. Benefiting from such unique luminescence behaviors, the as-fabricated glass and GC show great promise for applications in emergency illumination, information display, and advanced optical anti-counterfeiting. Beyond reporting a facile strategy for multicolor PerL material construction, this work also provides fundamental guidance for defect engineering and emission color manipulation of future PerL systems.
