Interface-Induced Self-Assembly Strategy Toward 2D Ordered Mesoporous Carbon/MXene Heterostructures for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Zhilin Liu,Hailong Xiong,Yaxiao Luo,Liangliang Zhang,Kuo Hu,Ling Zhang,Yu Gao,Zhen-An Qiao

Graphical The best of both worlds : An interface-induced self-assembly strategy is employed to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbon/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures with high specific surface area and excellent thermostability. The obtained samples combine the advantages of ordered mesoporous carbon and MXene and exhibit superior electrochemical performance. Two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides (MXene) have demonstrated great potential in many fields. However, the serious aggregation and poor thermodynamic stability of MXene greatly hinder their applications. Here, an interface-induced self-assembly strategy to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbon/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures (OMCTs) was developed. In this method, the composite monomicelles formed by Pluronic F127 and low-molecular-weight phenolic resol self-assembled on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x to prevent the restacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x and maintain its thermostability. The obtained OMCTs possessed high specific surface areas (259–544 m 2 g −1 ), large pore volumes (0.296–0.481 cm 3 g −1 ), and excellent thermodynamic stability (up to 600 °C). Benefiting from these advantages, OMCTs serving as the electrode materials for supercapacitor exhibited superior supercapacitor performances, including high capacitance of 247 F g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , satisfactory rate performance of 190 F g −1 at 5 A g −1 , and cyclability.

Research on the modification of magnesium hydride by two-dimensional layered Mo2Ti2C3 MXene

Xiaohui Lu,Xinglin Yang,Jie Kong,Jianye Su,Quanhui Hou

One of the most important technologies for the sustainable development of energy in the future is solid-state hydrogen storage. This study employed etching methods to fabricate two-dimensional layered catalyst Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 MXene, which was compared with unetched MAX phases Mo 2 Ti 2 AlC 3 and Ti 3 C 2 , as well as Mo 2 C. Through mechanical ball milling, these materials were mixed with MgH 2 to prepare composite materials, including MgH 2  + Ti 2 C 3 , MgH 2  + Mo 2 C, MgH 2  + Mo 2 Ti 2 AlC 3 , and MgH 2  + Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 . According to the study, Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 demonstrates the synergistic catalytic actions of Ti and Mo in contrast to Ti 2 C 3 and Mo 2 C. The composite material MgH 2  + Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 lowers the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 180 °C, which is 165 °C lower than pure MgH 2 . After 30 min at 250 °C, the dehydrogenation amount is approximately 5.85 wt%. Hydrogen absorption begins at 40 °C and reaches approximately 5.75 wt% at 150 °C. Additionally, it maintains a reversible hydrogen storage capacity of up to 96 % even after 20th cycles at 300 °C. This is because Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 has one less layer of Al than Mo 2 Ti 2 AlC 3 , which results in a wider interlayer spacing, more active sites for MgH 2 , and facilitates hydrogen molecule dissociation and recombination.

Bioinspired 3D-Printed MXene and Spidroin-Based Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Microneedle Scaffolds for Efficient Wound Management

Yun Shao,Kaiyi Dong,Xinyu Lu,Bingbing Gao,Bingfang He

Biomedical dressings have been comprehensively explored for wound healing; however, the complicated manufacturing process and mono-function of the dressing remain critical challenges for further applications. Here, a versatile extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing strategy to prepare MXene and spidroin-incorporated microneedle scaffolds with photothermal responsive and self-healing properties for promoting wound healing is proposed. Inspired by the cactus, the microneedle scaffold is composed of a top porous scaffold, and microneedles whose inverse opal (IO) photonic crystal (PC) structure and the ample space between the scaffold gaps endow the microneedle scaffold with high drug-carrying capacity. Furthermore, the excellent electrical and photothermal properties of MXene allow the microneedle scaffold to perform sensitive wound movement monitoring and controlled drug release under near-infrared irradiation. Moreover, the extensive hydrogen bonding and Schiff base between the spidroin, polyurethane (PU), and aloe vera gel (avGel) molecules conferred high self-healing and mechanical performance to the microneedle scaffold. In vivo experiments with rat models of wounds have shown that drug-laden microneedle scaffolds under near-infrared (NIR) light can promote the recovery of full-skin wounds. These unique characteristics suggest that 3D-printed multifunctional microneedle scaffolds show great potential for applications in facilitating wound healing and will find widespread applications in wound management.

Facile synthesis of coral-like Pt nanoparticles/MXene (Ti3C2Tx) with efficient hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Li Bishan,Ye Rongkai,Wang Qianyu,Liu Xiaoqing,Fang Pingping,Hu Jianqiang

Exploring efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of focus points of energy research. In this work, a series of MXene/Pt- x (wherein, x is the adding amount of 6.2 mM H 2 PtCl 6 solution) nanomaterials were fabricated via a facile synthesis method, in which coral-like Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. The Pt-loading amounts on the MXene could be simply controlled by varying the adding amounts of H 2 PtCl 6 , which would influence the sizes of Pt NPs on the MXene. The optimum catalytic activity was obtained on the MXene/Pt-3 with a low overpotential of 302 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 , which was about 84 mV less than MXene/Pt-2. The efficiently electrocatalytic HER activity of MXene/Pt- x nanomaterials was due to the electron transfer from MXene to Pt NPs. The HER performance of the MXene/Pt- x nanomaterials was influenced by both Pt-loading amounts and Pt particle sizes. This work expands future applications of MXene-based nanomaterials in clean energy conversion reactions.

Ultrafast kinetics net electrode assembled via MoSe2/MXene heterojunction for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Enze Xu,Yan Zhang,Hui Wang,Zhifeng Zhu,Junjie Quan,Yajing Chang,Pengcheng Li,Dabin Yu,Yang Jiang

Establishing advanced sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with high energy density and eco-friendly electrode materials are still far from satisfactory due to the large-size of sodium-ions and sluggish redox kinetics during electrochemical processes. Herein, a novel ultrafast kinetics net electrode assembled via MoSe 2 /MXene heterojunction is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing. Featuring the Van der Waals force interaction between MoSe 2 and MXene , the volumetric change during the sodium ions insertion/extraction courses is effectively restrained, and the reaction kinetics is greatly enhanced further. Meanwhile, both the high electrical and ion conductivity (lower diffusion barrier between Na + /MXene ~0.066 eV) provided by the unique MXene based net heterostructure of our hybrid materials, as evidenced by DFT calculations, are beneficial to the transportation of sodium ions, thus enabling an outstanding rate and long-cycling capability. As a result, the fabricated cells exhibit high reversible capacities of 490 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , as well as 250 mAh g −1 at a high current of 10 A g −1 with a coulombic efficiency of 99.8%, indicating the excellent electrochemical performance of our hybrid materials, especially at high current. This novel net MoSe 2 /MXene heterostructure, combined with our simple synthesis strategy together, are expected to have great potential in sodium-ions storage application.

Synthesis of MoS2@N-MXene/C Heterogeneous Nanosheets and its Enhanced Pseudocapacitance Effects for NIBs

Wei-Xiang Cheng,Yi-Zhao Chen,Song-Yi Liao,Jun-Qi Hu,Cun-Sheng Liu,Shuai-Fu Cui,Xing-Wen Huang,Yidong Liu,Yonggang Min

Graphical NIB news : MoS 2 anchored on nitrogen-doped MXene nanosheets with carbon coating were prepared and applied in Na-ion batteries (NIBs). It remained at ∼308 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 300 cycles and showed higher rate performance of ∼189 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 . The MoS 2 @N-MXene/C heterogeneous nanosheets showed enhanced pseudocapacitance effects of 84.5 % at a scan rate of 2 mV s −1 according to CV curves simulation. Currently, Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have emerged as a new generation of energy storage devices. However, due to the lack of suitable anode materials, the large-scale practical application of NIBs is still greatly limited. Therefore, to address this issue, an effective strategy towards an advanced NIBs anode was developed by achieving MoS 2 anchored on nitrogen-doped MXene nanosheets with carbon coating (shorten as MoS 2 @N-MXene/C). The structure, surface chemistry state and micromorphology of MoS 2 @N-MXene/C were carefully analyzed and characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM/TEM, respectively. It was shown that MoS 2 was loaded on N-MXene to form a heterogeneous nanosheets structure. When applied to the anode of NIBs, MoS 2 @N-MXene/C delivered ∼189 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 and remained at ∼308 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Moreover, based on the simulation and calculation from CV curves, the enhanced electrochemical performances of MoS 2 @N-MXene/C was assigned to its high pseudocapacitance-dominated contribution (84.5 % at a scan rate of 2 mV s −1 ). Therefore, owing to the highly conductive N-MXene and the actively anchored MoS 2 , MoS 2 @N-MXene/C could effectively provide efficient channels for charge transfer and ionic diffusion. The presented design strategy may provide a guidance for developing more-efficient NIBs anode.

Junwen Xie,Yinhang Zhang,Jinming Dai,Zuoxiang Xie,Jie Xue,Kun Dai,Fei Zhang,Dan Liu,Junye Cheng,Feiyu Kang,Baohua Li,Yun Zhao,Lin Lin,Qingbin Zheng

A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe 2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe 2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm −2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli , Bacillus subtilis , and Staphylococcus aureus ). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

3D Porous Ti3C2 MXene/NiCo-MOF Composites for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Yijun Liu,Ying He,Elif Vargun,Tomas Plachy,Petr Saha,Qilin Cheng

To improve Li storage capacity and the structural stability of Ti3C2MXene-based electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a facile strategy is developed to construct three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous Ti3C2/bimetal-organic framework (NiCo-MOF) nanoarchitectures as anodes for high-performance LIBs. 2D Ti3C2nanosheets are coupled with NiCo-MOF nanoflakes induced by hydrogen bonds to form 3D Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF composite films through vacuum-assisted filtration technology. The morphology and electrochemical properties of Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF are influenced by the mass ratio of MOF to Ti3C2. Owing to the interconnected porous structures with a high specific surface area, rapid charge transfer process, and Li+diffusion rate, the Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF-0.4 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 402 mAh g−1at 0.1 A g−1after 300 cycles; excellent rate performance (256 mAh g−1at 1 A g−1); and long-term stability with a capacity retention of 85.7% even after 400 cycles at a high current density, much higher than pristine Ti3C2MXene. The results highlight that Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF have great potential in the development of high-performance energy storage devices.

Ti3C2 MXene derived carbon-doped TiO2 multilayers anchored with Fe2O3 nanoparticles as anode for enhanced lithium-ion storage

Xiaoxin Lv,Zixiao Deng,Menglian Wang,Jiujun Deng

Transition-metal carbides, carbonitrides , and nitrides (MXene) as an emerging two-dimensional semiconductor has open an ideal pathway for fabricating various TiO 2 -based functional materials . In this work, we demonstrate a simple and one-step heat treatment for the fabrication of Ti 3 C 2 MXene-derived carbon-doped TiO 2 /Fe 2 O 3 composite for superior lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As an anode, the as-fabricated composite delivers an excellent lithium-ion storage of 538 mA h/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g and superior rate performance of 152.6 mA h/g at a higher current density of 5 A/g, which is 6 times higher than that of C-doped TiO 2 electrode. In addition, a remarkable cyclic stability with 88.46 % capacity retention is also obtained for the composite anode at a current density of 1 A/g after 1000 cycles. Based on various characterizations, the greatly enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of carbon doping, layered structures of TiO 2 , and the anchoring of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles , which effectively promote the charge transport kinetics. This study will broaden the Ti 3 C 2 MXene application in LIBs and meanwhile provide an alternative method for synthesizing more efficient anode materials .

2D vanadium carbide (V2CTx) MXene supported NiIn intermetallic compounds for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol

Wang Yunqian,Shi Haixiang,Chen Liuyun,Su Tongming,Luo Xuan,Xie Xinling,Ji Hongbing,Qin Zuzeng

NiIn intermetallic compounds are constructed over V 2 CT x MXene for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL). Ni 4 In/V 2 CT x demonstrated a conversion rate of 93.6% for CAL, with a high selectivity of 77.4% for COL. The COL yield of Ni 4 In/V 2 CT x is much greater than that of Ni 4 In, Ni/V 2 CT x , and Ni 4 In/Al 2 O 3 . Moreover, the V 2 CT x support is the key to the formation of NiIn intermetallic compounds, which effectively inhibit the oxidation of metallic Ni. NiIn metal particles are uniformly distributed on the surface of V 2 CT x , increasing the metal‒support interaction. Electron-deficient metallic Ni and In inhibit the hydrogenation of the C=C bond. Furthermore, the introduction of In provides more abundant and stronger Lewis acid sites, facilitating the adsorption of C=O bonds and thereby enhancing the selectivity for COL.

A MXene modification strategy of Prussian blue cathodes toward a stable cathode electrolyte interphase and suppressed Mn dissolution

Zerui Chen,Yingxinjie Wang,Jie Wang,Xiaohui Li,Guohao Li,Ziying Zhang,Zhenjun Wu,Xiuqiang Xie,Nan Zhang

Manganese-based Prussian blue analogues (PBA) have garnered widespread attention as the promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the inevitable Jahn-Teller distortion and the formation of unstable and uneven cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) result in severe Mn dissolution and poor cycling stability. Herein, we report a simple MXene modification strategy cold pressing method to embed Prussian blue cathode materials into MXene nanosheets. This highly conductive protective barrier not only mitigates the Jahn-Teller distortion in Mn-PBA and maintains the integrity of the particles during charge–discharge cycles, but also partially suppresses side reactions between the electrolyte and cathode interface through surface functional groups (−F), resulting in a thin and uniform CEI. The protection of the stable CEI and MXene nanosheets simultaneously alleviate the Jahn-Teller effect and suppress the Mn dissolution during long cycling, thus allowing the cathode material to retain ∼ 80 % of its capacity after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g −1 . This study highlights the importance of stabilizing the cathode interface and provides a novel approach for preparing highly stable manganese-based PBA cathode.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane/MXene Nanosheet/SiO2 Nanoparticle Composites for Superhydrophobic Surfaces and Wearable Strain Sensors

Ying Huang,Hualong Huang,Yinghao Guo,Yulin Ding,Yifan Zhou,Hang Yu,Yinghao Liu,Wenmu Li

The poor inherent water resistance and electrical performance of paper-based electrodes restrict their applications in electronic products. Organic–inorganic nanocomposites, which can integrate the merits of various materials, are the best way to compensate for these shortcomings. In this study, a facile strategy was developed to fabricate a superhydrophobic tissue/MXene/TPU/SiO2 paper-based composite for multidimensional bionic surface and wearable strain sensor applications. Inspired by taro leaves, superhydrophobic surfaces consisting of TPU/SiO2 micronanospheres were prepared by electrospinning. High strain-sensing performance is achieved by the microcrack extension mechanism of the tissue/MXene electrode. The integrity of the tissue/MXene/TPU/SiO2 paper-based composites was enhanced by systematically optimizing the multilayered assembly processes and technologies. Our composite paper demonstrated high mechanical strength and highly effective antibacterial and self-cleaning properties (water contact angle, WCA = 157°), which could not only inhibit the adhesion of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus but also repel solid contaminants upon washing with water. The paper-based wearable strain sensor displayed a very high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 580) over a broad strain range (bending angle from 0 to 160°) and a fast response time (53 ms). Our e-skin sensor array can effectively capture the wrist motions of table tennis players. Moreover, this sensor also showed a very high breathability (56.5 g·m–2·h–1) for comfort of wear. Notably, our paper-based sensors can be disposed of by burning, which can mitigate potential electronic waste pollution. Our strategy for fabricating paper-based sensors with superhydrophobicity, breathability, and antimicrobial properties could potentially provide promising prospects for future flexible electronics.
