All-inorganic lead-free metal halide (MH) nanocrystals (NCs) have shown great promise for various optoelectronic applications; however, achieving efficient luminescence in the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) region remains a persistent challenge. Herein, we developed a new class of NIR-II-emitting materials based on Sb 3+ /Ln 3+ (Ln = Nd, Yb, Er) co-doped 0D Rb 3 InCl 6 NCs. By leveraging the spin-orbit allowed 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition of Sb 3+ as a sensitizer, we achieve intense multi-wavelength NIR-II emission arising from the 4f → 4f transitions of Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ , and Er 3+ under single-wavelength near-ultraviolet excitation, with a notable quantum yield of 7.1% for Er 3+ emission. The resulting NCs also demonstrate excellent ambient stability, enabling their use as visible/NIR dual emitters for applications such as bioimaging and night vision. This work provides a versatile co-doping strategy involving s- and f-electron ions to realize efficient NIR-II luminescence in lead-free MH NCs.

Conventional fluorescence imaging in the visible and first near-infrared (NIR-I, 700–900 nm) windows is limited by tissue scattering and autofluorescence. The second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000–3000 nm) window offers deeper penetration depth and higher signal-to-noise ratio due to reduced photon scattering. Among the high-performance probes, atomically precise gold clusters emerge as a promising class of materials, as their defined structure can be engineered for enhanced NIR-II emission. Here, we report controllable Au 18 clusters for NIR-II bioimaging, which exhibit superior brightness, stability, and biocompatibility. We successfully dope a single Zn atom into the Au 18 cluster structure, thereby optimizing optical properties and improving photostability. Zn atom doping shifts the energy levels downward by approximately 1.2 eV and induces local charge redistribution, resulting in enhanced photoluminescence. The Au 17 Zn 1 clusters exhibit a 4.1-fold NIR-II fluorescence enhancement and high temporal stability with excellent biological safety. Furthermore, Au 17 Zn 1 shows potential for visualizing liver tissue in mice with hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI). In addition, three-dimensional (3D) imaging of HIRI mice using light-sheet microscopy (LSM) reveals vascular dilation from approximately 120 to 300 µm, clearly delineating the different stages of HIRI. Therefore, Au 17 Zn 1 shows potential as a tool for HIRI assessment.

Lead-free halide perovskites have drawn considerable interest, owing to their low-toxicity and favorable photophysical characteristics. However, achieving efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission often suffers from a trade-off between the red shift and quantum yield. Herein, we report a synergistic host-dopant strategy in zero-dimensional Cs2-xRbxInBr5·H2O perovskites. Controlled Rb+ alloying induces lattice contraction, which unexpectedly weakens electron–phonon coupling and suppresses nonradiative decay, leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 53.2%. Subsequently Mn2+ doping further passivates defect states, boosting the PLQY to 67.5%. Density functional theory calculations and temperature-dependent spectroscopy elucidate the role of the lattice strain in regulating self-trapped exciton emission. A prototype NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) fabricated from the optimized material demonstrates a promising performance in night-vision imaging and plant growth applications. This work provides a viable design strategy for efficient and stable NIR phosphors via a coupled lattice and defect engineering.

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–2000 nm) provides an ideal window for multichannel photoluminescence lifetime imaging (mPLI) because of its exceptional tissue penetration depth and minimal scattering. However, the inevitable spectral crosstalk that is caused by the broad and overlapping emissions of traditional luminescent materials (e.g., organic dyes and quantum dots) has restricted the scalability of mPLI channels. Herein, we developed a series of Ln 3+ -doped (Ln = Nd, Er, Tm, or Ho) stratified nanoparticles (Ln-SNPs) that enable highly efficient multiwavelength NIR-II luminescence. These nanoparticles can be further engineered into concentration-mediated Yb 3+ energy relay nanoparticles to enable the precise tuning of the luminescence lifetime across the 1060–2050 nm range, thereby expanding the NIR-II imaging channels in mPLI. Notably, the engineered Tm-SNPs exhibit optimized downshifting emission at ∼1850 nm (NIR-IIc subwindow) with distinguishable luminescence lifetimes that span three orders of magnitude at similar emission intensities. This advancement establishes a powerful toolkit for multidimensional information encryption and multiplexed bioimaging applications.

Achieving efficient ultra-broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission in Cr 3+ -doped traditional spinel remains a challenge owing to the inherent rigidity of the host lattice and the dominant strong crystal-field effect. Herein, we demonstrate multiple crystal-field engineering to realize efficient broadband NIR emission in Cr 3+ -activated spinel phosphors. A low-symmetry Mg 4 InSbO 8 spinel with mixed-cation octahedral sublattices is employed to construct diversified weak crystal-field environments for Cr 3+ . Through synergistic site and valence regulation, the occupation of Cr 3+ at various octahedral sites is optimized, while the unfavorable formation of high-valent Cr 4+ is suppressed. Specifically, partial Ga substitution in In/MgO 6 octahedra mitigates lattice mismatch and weakens electron-phonon coupling. Meanwhile, LiF acts as a flux agent and charges compensator under an N 2 atmosphere to further restrict Cr 4+ generation. The optimized phosphor exhibits a broadband NIR emission centered at 783 nm with a full width at half maximum of 203 nm and an internal quantum efficiency of 89.1%. The integrated emission intensity at 423 K remains 46.2% of the intensity at room temperature. The as-fabricated phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) enables clear target imaging at a distance of 2.7 m through dense smoke at night, outperforming a conventional visible pc-LED that achieves only an imaging distance of 0.4 m.

Fungal infections pose a severe global health threat, exacerbated by limited treatment options and increasing drug resistance. Ruthenium (Ru) complex based photodynamic therapy (PDT) presents a promising alternative that circumvents drug resistance, but its application has been constrained by poor tissue light penetration and limited accumulation within pathogens. To address these challenges, we developed a drug-loading core-shell nanosystem based on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), designated as UCNP@dmSiO 2 -Ru, which integrates Yb/Tm-doped UCNPs with a polypyridine ruthenium (II) photosensitizer. Upon 980 nm irradiation, the UCNPs emit visible light that activates the ruthenium complex through energy transfer, resulting in localized singlet oxygen generation. In vitro , this nanoparticle could adhere to fungal cells, and demonstrated potent antifungal activity. In murine wound infection model, topical application followed by near-infrared light irradiation significantly accelerated the wound healing and reduced fungal burden, with no observable toxicity. This work provides a fungus-adherent PDT nanosystem with NIR-activation, overcoming the tissue penetration limitation and offering a promising strategy for treating deep-seated fungal infections.

The advancement of novel detection strategies, especially those activatable by near-infrared (NIR) light, is of great importance for advancing biomedical sensing. Herein, we report a rationally designed, NIR-excitable nanoprobe, UCNP‑hemin@F127, for the sensitive detection and imaging of peroxynitrite (ONOO - ). The central design feature is the dual role of the biological molecule hemin, which acts simultaneously as a luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) acceptor to quench the emission of core‑shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) and as a specific recognition unit for ONOO - . Co‑encapsulated with the UCNP donor within an amphiphilic F127 matrix, hemin enables a highly efficient “turn‑on” sensing mechanism. Upon interaction with ONOO - , the porphyrin ring of hemin is cleaved, disrupting the LRET process and restoring the fluorescence. This nanoprobe allows rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of ONOO - in solution, achieving a detection limit of 37.41 nM and a signal enhancement of up to 7.7‑fold. It demonstrates good biocompatibility and has been successfully applied for visualizing both exogenous and endogenous ONOO - in live cells under 980 nm excitation. This integrated quencher‑sensor strategy, employing a native biomolecule as a key functional module, provides a reliable tool for monitoring ONOO - and offers a versatile design platform for the development of advanced LRET‑based bio-probes.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment is often compromised by acquired resistance and, in the context of photothermal therapy (PTT), by tumor thermotolerance─a protective stress response mediated by the molecular chaperone heat shock protein 90 (HSP90). To address this dual challenge, we developed a multifunctional nanoplatform (Cu9S8@Lum NPs) that synergistically integrates NIR-II PTT with HSP90 inhibition. This nanosystem is based on a Cu9S8 nanocore with high photothermal conversion efficiency, loaded with the HSP90 inhibitor Luminespib and designed for pH-responsive drug release. This spatiotemporally coordinated strategy enables concurrent tumor hyperthermia and molecular interference with the heat-shock defense mechanism. In vitro, the nanoparticles effectively suppressed HSP90 expression, exacerbated cellular oxidative stress, and induced mitochondrial apoptosis, resulting in markedly enhanced cytotoxicity compared to PTT alone. In vivo, the nanoplatform demonstrated effective tumor accumulation and, under mild NIR-II irradiation, achieved significant tumor growth inhibition in a syngeneic model. This work presents a mechanism-informed nanomaterial strategy to overcome thermotolerance in NSCLC, advancing the development of synergistic cancer nanotherapeutics.

Spectral-selective photodetection across the visible
to short-wave
infrared (VIS–SWIR) range is highly desirable for advanced
imaging and sensing applications. Here, we report a bias-switchable
colloidal quantum-dot (CQD) n – p – n photodetector based on vertically stacked
PbS and PbSe CQD heterojunctions with oppositely oriented built-in
electric fields. This architecture allows electric-field redistribution
under external bias, enabling controllable carrier transport and wavelength-dependent
response. A ZnTe interlayer is introduced to suppress dark current
and enhance bias-polarity-dependent spectral selectivity. By reversing
the bias polarity, the device electrically switches between VIS +
near-infrared (NIR) and NIR + SWIR detection modes within a single
pixel. The photodetector exhibits low dark current densities and high
detectivities of 4.3 × 10 11 , 2.6 × 10 11 , and 1.6 × 10 11 Jones at 600, 1000, and 1550 nm,
respectively. Integration with a silicon thin-film transistor readout
circuit enables multimodal VIS–NIR–SWIR imaging, and
multilayer perceptron–assisted learning further enables high-quality
spectral reconstruction. These results highlight the potential of
this CQD n – p – n architecture for multispectral imaging and compact computational
spectrometer applications.

Background: Cardiac sympathetic hyperactivation of the left stellate ganglion (LSG) critically promotes ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) following myocardial infarction (MI). Although neuromodulatory strategies targeting sympathetic activity have shown therapeutic potential, current strategies are limited by invasiveness, incomplete targeting and transient efficacy. Therefore, safe and precise approaches for modulating LSG activity are needed. This study aimed to investigate the enhanced neuromodulatory effects of phospholipid-coated carbon nanotubes (PC-CNTs) combined with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy on the LSG for preventing post-MI VAs.Methods: PC-CNTs were synthesized and characterized, followed by evaluation of their photothermal properties and in vitro/in vivo biocompatibility. In a canine MI model induced by left anterior descending artery occlusion (n = 18), animals were randomly assigned to PBS, PC-CNTs and PC-CNTs + NIR groups. PBS or PC-CNTs (30 μg mL− 1, 0.1 mL) were locally microinjected into the LSG, and animals in the PC-CNTs + NIR group subsequently received 808 nm NIR laser irradiation (1.0 W cm− 2 for 5 min). LSG neural activity, heart rate variability (HRV), ventricular effective refractory period (ERP) and VA incidence were assessed. Transcriptomic profiling of LSG tissue and molecular analysis of peri-ganglionic adipose tissue were performed to evaluate therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms. Results: PC-CNTs exhibited excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and favorable biocompatibility. In vivo, PC-CNTs treatment suppressed MI-induced LSG hyperactivity, improved cardiac autonomic balance, enhanced ventricular electrophysiological stability and reduced VA susceptibility compared with the PBS group. The addition of NIR photothermal therapy further enhanced these protective effects, resulting in further suppression of sympathetic activation and reduction of post-MI arrhythmias. Molecular analyses suggested that combined PC-CNTs and NIR treatment modulated the LSG microenvironment, as evidenced by reduced expression of inflammation-related genes (CXCL14, CSF3, TIMP1 and CRLF1), indicating attenuation of neuroinflammatory signaling. Additionally, NIR-induced local hyperthermia was associated with thermogenic browning of peri-ganglionic white adipose tissue, characterized by increased expression of thermogenic markers and reduced adipocyte size. These changes may contribute to reduced sympathetic hyperactivity and decreased arrhythmia susceptibility. Conclusion: The combination of PC-CNTs and NIR photothermal therapy provides enhanced anti-arrhythmic effects associated with suppression of LSG hyperactivity and modulation of neuroinflammatory signaling and peri-ganglionic adipose browning, representing a promising preclinical strategy for preventing VAs.

Phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) operating in the near-infrared (NIR) region are gaining attention as promising next-generation light sources for spectroscopy, bioimaging, and smart agriculture. However, developing NIR phosphors with emission spectra that match the absorption of phytochrome far-red (P fr ), a key photosensitizing pigment regulating plant photomorphogenesis, remains a major challenge for indoor agriculture applications. This study successfully synthesized the near-infrared phosphor GaBO 3 :Cr 3+ . Upon excitation at 420 nm, GaBO 3 :Cr 3+ shows an emission maximum centered at 710 nm, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 108 nm, demonstrating high spectral compatibility with P fr . Compared to room temperature intensity, the phosphor retains 85.6% of its emission intensity at 373 K. In conjunction with a 420 nm LED chip, GaBO 3 :Cr 3+ was employed to construct pc-LED devices for applications in night vision, non-destructive imaging, and plant growth experiments. Under near-infrared pc-LED illumination, Bidens pilosa exhibited a 133% increase in growth rate compared to natural sunlight conditions, confirming the efficacy of this NIR light source for plant growth promotion. This work demonstrates the potential applications of GaBO 3 :Cr 3+ phosphor for night vision, non-destructive imaging, and plant lighting.

With the growing threat of electromagnetic interference, developing lightweight and flexible multiband protection materials to shield humans from harmful electromagnetic interference is becoming particularly crucial. However, existing protection materials are bulky and designed primarily for single-band electromagnetic waves. This paper constructs bismuth/tungsten oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube/polyacrylonitrile (Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN) nanofiber composites with multilevel nanostructures through electrospinning and post-processing technology for effective NIR/UV/X-ray Multiband Electromagnetic Protection. The porous structure, combined with the strong absorption capabilities of MWCNTs for low-frequency electromagnetic waves and high photoelectric effects of high atomic number materials (Bi/WO 3 ), synergistically achieves remarkable electromagnetic protection performance. This includes 99.6 % near-infrared shielding and 99.95 % against ultraviolet (thickness: 0.12 mm), along with 55.2 % X-ray attenuation and a mass attenuation coefficient of 13.94 cm 2 g −1 at 33 keV (thickness: 1.92 mm). Light weight (0.3 g cm −3 ), fantastic flexibility, and moisture permeability (9.22 kg m −2 d −1 ) endow the material with outstanding wearable performance. In addition, Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN also possesses excellent thermal insulation performance (36.96 mW m −1 K −1 ), temperature resistance (289.8 °C), and good electrical insulation. These exceptional performances demonstrate its enormous potential for application in electromagnetic shielding and provide new ideas for designing advanced multiband electromagnetic protection materials.
