As atmospheric issues and energy crises worsen, developing environmentally friendly, low-cost, high-performance self-powered gas sensing systems for gas pollutant monitoring is crucial for the development of ecological civilization. In this work, an eco-friendly self-powered nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensor (EFNS) system based on an eco-friendly triboelectric nanogenerator (EF-TENG) is reported. The system comprises a power supply unit (EF-TENG) and a sensing unit (In 2 O 3 /PPy sensor), connected through a signal stabilization circuit. EF-TENG utilizes eco-friendly and biodegradable gelatin and PLA/PBAT as the friction layer. By introducing leaf structures on the gelatin surface using a template method , the output voltage and current of EF-TENG were increased by 1.44 and 1.67 times, respectively. The peak power density and root mean square power density of EF-TENG reached 1386 mW m −2 and 185.35 mW m −2 , respectively. Additionally, EF-TENG exhibited excellent long-term stability, maintaining a stable output voltage (∼24 V) after rectification and voltage stabilization treatment under conditions of 15–55°C and 40–80 % RH . Additionally, an In 2 O 3 /PPy heterostructure sensor was prepared, and the EFNS system was constructed through impedance matching effects, revealing the NO 2 response mechanism of the In 2 O 3 /PPy heterostructure . This achieved a wide detection range and highly sensitive (V g /V a = 355 %@30 ppm) detection of NO 2 . This work provides insights into eco-friendly self-powered gas sensors and sensing mechanisms, offering ideas for the development of environmental monitoring sensors and clean energy harvesting devices.

Until now, there have been many reports on the regulation of inorganic metal ions on the catalytic activity of nanozymes, but few reports on the regulation of anions (such as NO 2 − ) on enzyme activity. In this work, a copper-molybdenum doped carbon dots (Cu, Mo-CDs) with peroxidase-like (POD) activity was synthesized by simple one-step microwave digestion method. The Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system can promote 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidizing to blue oxidative product (oxTMB) due to the formation of ∙NO 2 free radical. While Hg 2+ was introduced into the system, the POD-like activity of Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system was inhibited due to the strong interaction and the electron transfer between Cu, Mo-CDs and Hg 2+ . The formation of ∙NO 2 and the electron transfer capability of Cu, Mo-CDs + Hg 2+ were confirmed through ESR spectra and FMN experiments. The bioenzyme-free colorimetric assay based on Cu, Mo-CDs nanozyme is used for detection of NO 2 − and Hg 2+ , showing lower detection limit (LOD) of 1.63 µg/L for NO 2 − , 0.13 µg/L for Hg 2+ , respectively and good recovery from 90.79 to 108.90%. The work paves a new way to design a nanozyme-based colorimetric protocol for traces NO 2 − and Hg 2+ residues in food analysis.

NO 2 is one of the most important air pollutant gases for the environment and human health. H 2 is seen as the next generation of clean energy to promote sustainable development. However, sensitive detection of NO 2 at room temperature is still a major challenge, and reliable H 2 sensors are also scarce. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are advantageous for detecting gas. Hence, we synthesized the unique hexahedral hollow mesoporous In 2 O 3 (h-In 2 O 3 ) derived from MIL-68 (In). The formation process and properties of h-In 2 O 3 were analyzed. The surface of h-In 2 O 3 is rich in hydroxyl groups , which are active sites for NO 2 adsorption at room temperature. Increasing working temperature up to 160 °C enables effective sensing reaction with H 2 . Based on different temperature-dependent gas sensing mechanisms, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits ultrasensitive response values of 400 towards 100 ppb NO 2 at room temperature (24 °C) and of 17.99 towards 10 ppm H 2 at 160 °C. In addition, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits reliable linear response, low theoretical detection limit of 1.8 ppt and 23 ppb for NO 2 and H 2 , excellent selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The synergistic effect of the unique structure, larger specific surface area , and abundant adsorbed oxygen plus oxygen vacancy contribute to the excellent gas sensing performance of the h-In 2 O 3 sensor. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of bifunctional gas sensors.

Electrochemical gas sensors (EGSs) are the most effective means for detecting NO 2 gas in industry, while facing the issue of exorbitant cost due to the use of expensive Pt catalyst. Herein, well-dispersed C-SiO 2 into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was adopt as high-stable gas diffusion membrane for ultrafast electrochemical NO 2 sensors. The nano-SiO 2 not only prevents material aggregation but also constructs porous networks between the gas diffusion electrode and gas molecules, providing a larger sensing area for high sensor performance. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent response linearity, short response time, and high stability. As compared with commercial Pt/C electrode, the sensor response is improved by 170 %. Moreover, a multiple linear regression model was introduced to predict the response values of NO 2 in the range of 5–100 ppm, achieving only 1.5 % deviation from the real values. This work not only demonstrates the feasibility of non-precious metals in gas diffusion membranes but also provides guide for designing next-generation low-cost EGSs.

Gold nanoparticles are extensively employed in the field of electrocatalytic nitrite reduction for ammonia synthesis, due to their exceptional conductivity and remarkable stability. However, the performance of a single metal is often limited and by combining different metals, the overall performance can be significantly improved to meet specific needs and application scenarios. The regulation of the interaction between loaded gold nanoparticles and metal oxide support materials represents an effective strategy for facilitating the reduction of nitrite to ammonia. In this work, we prepared three different structural morphologies of cerium dioxide (CeO2) – cubic (c-CeO2), rod-like (r-CeO2) and granular (p-CeO2), by modulating the hydrothermal temperature. The effect of the morphology of the CeO2 carriers on the surface structure of the composite catalyst, CeO2@Au, was systematically studied and its performance of the electrocatalytic reduction of ammonia from nitrite was explored. It was found that c-CeO2 loaded with Au nanoparticles possessed better electrocatalytic performance with an ammonia yield of 4007.9 μg h−1 mgcat−1 and a Faraday efficiency of 91.2% compared to r-CeO2 and p-CeO2. The results of the characterisation tests, conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental mapping analysis (EDS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP), demonstrate that c-CeO2 exhibits enhanced crystallinity, a reduced particle size and a more uniform dispersion. Therefore, c-CeO2 is able to load more Au nanoparticles during the complexation process with Au, which in turn possesses more reactive active sites. In addition, the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that after the complexation of c-CeO2 with Au, some of the lattice fringes of c-CeO2 were distorted with defects leading to an increase in the content of oxygen vacancies, which greatly improved the active area of the catalyst. These physicochemical properties endow the c-CeO2@Au catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic nitrite-to-ammonia activity.

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is emerging with dazzling visibility as a “layered material beyond graphene and molybdenum disulfide” due to its exquisite tunable electronic, surface structure, high carrier mobility, and physicochemical stability. In this article, In2O3 and Au nanoparticles (NPs) co-modified WS2 microsheets were prepared for detecting NO2 at room temperature (RT). The In2O3 and Au NPs were anchored on the surface of WS2 microsheets, which could be observed by the characterization. The NO2 sensing performance at RT was optimized by adjusting the contents of In2O3 and Au NPs. The proposed gas sensor based on Au1WIn6 (WS2 microsheets co-modified with 6 wt% In2O3 and 1 wt% Au NPs) showed the highest response (46.91 to 50 ppm NO2), limit of detection (LOD; 18.9 ppb), excellent linearity within the test range, and good stability under various relative humidity (RH), bending degrees, and bending times. The excellent result is attributed to the formation of a heterojunction, which increases the number of ionized oxygen adsorption sites and facilitates the reaction between NO2 gas and Au1WIn6. Therefore, it is believed that decorating WS2 microsheets with metal oxide and noble metal NPs is a promising strategy to improve the NO2 sensing property at RT.

Pt-loaded In 2 O 3 mesoporous nanofibers (NFs) have been prepared by electrospinning, followed by a facile reduction method. The sample obtained by adding tea saponin into the spinning solution, sample In-TS, displays a more than 4 times higher specific surface area, value of 86.9 m 2 g −1 , than that of conventionally prepared samples. The loading with small-sized Pt nanoparticles (NPs) determines excellent gas sensing performance towards NO 2 down to ppb level (R g /R a = 2.8 to 10 ppb and 23.9–1 ppm) at room temperature (RT), by that significantly lowering the power consumption. The reason is that the open pores and channels on the mesoporous NFs generated by the foaming agent not only promote the adsorption and desorption of NO 2 molecules on the sensing layers, but also improves the transduction function of the sensors by ensuring that there are no parts of the fiber that are not accessible to the gases. The introduction of Pt to the mesoporous NFs could accelerate the dissociation of absorbed oxygen and the active surface reactions in NO 2 owing to the catalytic property and chemical sensitization of well-dispersed Pt NPs. Due to the unique gas sensing performance, sample In-TS-Pt has a prospect for applications in low-concentration NO 2 detection at RT.

A room-temperature NO2 gas sensor with excellent performances is fabricated using an MAPbI3 (MA = CH3NH3+) thin film. It presents a high response even under extremely low NO2 concentrations. Its average response and recovery times are only ∼5 s and ∼25 s at room temperature, respectively, exhibiting its quick-responsive character. In addition, the MAPbI3-based NO2 sensor exhibits good selectivity. Interestingly, the sensitivity of the MAPbI3-based NO2 sensor is strikingly improved under high-pressure gas conditions. This phenomenon can be used for the online monitoring of chemical reaction processes and in situ detection of trace-level gas impurities under high-pressure conditions. Furthermore, based on theoretical calculations, a simple model is proposed to illustrate the corresponding gas-sensing mechanism.

NO 2 is a dangerous gaseous pollutant, which is also a precursor to the formation of photochemical smog and ozone. It has negative impacts on the environment and human beings at local, regional and even the whole global scale. In this context, it is imperative to develop the efficient sensing materials for detecting NO 2 gas. In this study, a near room temperature NO 2 sensing material (In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructure) with “4S” index (selectivity, sensitivity, speed, stability) was constructed, it overcomes the drawbacks of traditional detection techniques and solves the unavoidable problems of metal oxide semiconductors in the sensing process (high temperature, cross response, weak response at low concentration, etc.). Meanwhile, the synergy between the surface structure and heterostructure interface of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 has been thoroughly analyzed. More importantly, this study also sampled and monitored ambient air samples from different geographical locations and different time points in cities, which provides strong support for promoting the application of MOS sensors in real environment.

Wearable gas sensors, possessing the advantages of high sensitivity, excellent flexibility, high permeability, low weight, and workability at ambient conditions, hold great promise for real-time health monitoring and early warnings of poisonous gases. However, obtaining high-performance wearable gas sensors utilizing the current well-developed inorganic semiconductor oxide sensing materials is still very limited due to their fragile and rigid nature. Herein, a newly designed wearable gas sensor based on an all-inorganic ASZ (Al2O3-stabilized ZrO2)/ZnO/SnO2 nanofibers is introduced for the first time. The flexible ASZ ceramic sponge substrate (with a Young’s modulus of 4.15 MPa) and ultrathin ZnO/SnO2 sensing layer endow the wearable gas sensor with promising properties such as super flexibility (with a bending radius of 5 mm), high gas permeability, and low weight. Furthermore, driven by UV light irradiation, this all-inorganic wearable sensor also demonstrates a stable NO2 sensing response under different bending states at room temperature, which enables the gas sensor to be more compatible with wearable sensing applications. This work offers a general method to achieve a high-performance wearable gas sensor based on inorganic materials and provides new insights into their potential in wearable gas-sensing applications.

Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) nanoplates demonstrate remarkable potential in NO 2 detection due to their unique physical affinity to NO 2 . However, SnS 2 nanoplate-based sensors suffer from high operating temperatures, inadequate sensitivity, and slow recovery due to intrinsic low conductivity and self-stacking issues. To address these challenges, we fabricated vanadium tetrasulfide/SnS 2 (VS 4 /SnS 2 ) composites via a facile hydrothermal method. Results reveal that the addition of VS 4 significantly reduces the resistance of SnS 2 -based sensor. The sensitivity (1.64 ppm −1 ) of the optimized VS 4 /SnS 2 (1:1) sensor to 1 −5 ppm NO 2 is 546.67 times higher than that of the pristine VS 4 sensor. The sensor exhibits ultrafast complete recovery (2.25 s) and a low limit of detection (90 ppb) at 25 ℃. In addition, the VS 4 /SnS 2 (1:1) sensor displays reliable repeatability, outstanding selectivity and long-term stability. These breakthroughs originate from the formation of n-n junctions and a unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure. This work demonstrates a scalable approach for developing highly sensitive and rapid SnS 2 -based NO 2 sensors operating at room temperature.

Real-time, room-temperature nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) monitoring is crucial for protecting human health and the environment, yet conventional sensors face limitations on high-temperature operation and external power dependence. Here, we report a self-powered zinc-air battery-driven NO 2 gas sensor based on a multiple grain boundary-engineered CeO 2 (MGB-CeO 2 ) air cathode. Abundant grain boundaries in MGB-CeO 2 promote oxygen vacancy formation, providing more active sites that facilitate NO 2 adsorption and charge transfer. Compared to nanorod CeO 2 (NR-CeO 2 ) sensor, the MGB-CeO 2 sensor achieves a 3.5-fold higher response of 21.2 % to 10 ppm NO 2 , along with shorter response and recovery times. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm significantly higher NO 2 adsorption energy for MGB-CeO 2 than that for NR-CeO 2 , which can be attributed to its defect-rich structure. The MGB-CeO 2 sensor presents outstanding selectivity, low practical limit of detection, and excellent long-term stability. This work provides a novel strategy for the development of self-powered gas sensors, offering valuable insights into electrochemical sensing for practical implications.
