With the merits of high safety and energy density, all-solid-state zinc–air batteries possess potential applications in flexible and wearable electronic devices. Especially, the air cathodes with bifunctional catalytic activity, i.e. oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been received enormous attention. In this work, we provide a novel phosphorus/nitrogen co-doped and bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived cathode configurated with phosphorus-doped bimetallic FeNi alloys and a nitrogen-doped porous carbon layer loaded on graphene (P–FeNi/NC@G). The P–FeNi/NC@G electrode exhibits a superior OER activity with an overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and an ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.81 V. With P–FeNi/NC@G as the air cathode, the integrated all-solid-state rechargeable zinc–air battery presents a high open-circuit voltage of 1.53 V, a high peak power density of 159 mW cm−2, a small charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.73 V at 5 mA cm−2, as well as excellent long-term stability up to 144 cycles. This work not only expands the air cathode materials database but also develops a new co-doped synthesis method that can be utilized to fabricate a cathode with promoted catalytic efficiency, resulting in improved performance for an all-solid-state zinc–air battery.

A reasonable design of the pore structure of carbon nanofiber-based electrocatalysts can effectively accelerate the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we report an electrospinning method by adding supramolecular coordination polymers to selected polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) spinning systems. Benefiting from the difference in the thermal decomposition temperature of each component during the pyrolysis process, CA was applied as a sacrificial template to prepare a high-efficiency ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalyst (Co-N@PCNFs-0.2) with directional hollow channels and a hierarchical pore structure. This unique multichannel carbon nanofiber morphology and hierarchical pore structure led to abundant active sites while also boosting the electron transfer rates. Notably, applying Co-N@PCNFs-0.2 as an air electrode to Zn–air batteries results in a large specific discharge capacity of 884 W h kgZn–1 and a maximum power density of 151 mW cm–2.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), with precisely controlled metal atom distribution and adjustable coordination architecture, have gained intensive concerns as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in Zn-air batteries (ZAB). The attainment of a monodispersed state for metallic atoms anchored on the carbonaceous substrate remains the foremost research priority; however, the persistent challenges lie in the relatively weak metal-support interactions and the instability of captured single atom active sites. Furthermore, in order to achieve rapid transport of O 2 and other reactive substances within the carbon matrix, manufacturing SACs based on multi-stage porous carbon substrates is highly anticipated. Here, we propose a methodology for the fabrication of carbon aerogels (CA)-supported SACs utilizing papermaking nanofibers , which incorporates advanced strategies for N -atom self-doping, defect/vacancy introduction, and single-atom interface engineering. Specifically, taking advantages of using green and energy-efficient feedstocks, combining with a direct pore-forming template volatilization and chemical vapor deposition approach, we successfully developed N -doped carbon aerogels immobilized with separated iron sites (Fe-SAC@N/CA-Cd). The obtained Fe-SAC@N/CA-Cd exhibited substantially large specific surface area (S BET = 1173 m 2 /g) and a multi-level pore structure, which can effectively mitigate the random aggregation of Fe atoms during pyrolysis. As a result, it demonstrated appreciable activity and stability in catalyzing the ORR progress (E 1/2 = 0.88 V, E onset = 0.96 V). Furthermore, the assembled liquid electrolyte-state Zn-air batteries (LES-ZAB) and all-solid-state Zn-air battery (ASS-ZAB) also provides encouraging performance, with a peak power density of 169 mW cm −2 for LES-ZAB and a maximum power density of 124 mW cm −2 for ASS-ZAB.

It remains a major challenge to develop a facile method to prepare non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity and durability to drive the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, a highly efficient bimetallic Zn/Fe@N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Zn/Fe–N–C) catalyst derived from ZIF-8 and hemin (host–guest) was firstly reported by one-step thermal treatment. Fe2+ spatially separated by using the hemin guest in the ZIF-8 framework and hydrocarbon-branched chains form rich Fe–Nx active sites, and the evaporation of Zn2+ generates a highly porous structure in the Zn/Fe–N–C catalysts. Benefitting from this unique structure and composition, the resulting Zn/Fe2–N–C catalyst exhibits excellent ORR activities in both 0.1 M KOH (onset potential, Eonset = 1.08 V, and half-wave potential, E1/2 = 0.86 V vs. RHE) and 0.5 M H2SO4 media (Eonset = 1.04 V and E1/2 = 0.81 V), which are even comparable to those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, and ranks among the top reported electrocatalysts. In addition, it also has outstanding long-term durability and good methanol resistance, much better than those of Pt/C in both acidic and alkaline media, which makes it one of the best non-noble alternatives of Pt-based catalysts for ORR electrocatalysis. This work highlights the potential to rationally design and fabricate high-performance ORR catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) involve proton coupled electron transfer reaction (PCET), resulting in sluggish redox kinetics. At present, the development of high-efficiency bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is still a puzzling challenge. Herein, we propose a scalable strategy for embedding and beading ZIF-derived hollow Co–Nx nanocube cage dispersion implanted with porous carbonized nanofibers (EH/PCNFs and BH/PCNFs) through electrospinning and annealing. The cobalt species prevent themselves from agglomerating during the annealing process through the “fence” effect of the non-volatile Zn species, thereby synergizing with ligand volatilization to facilitate the formation of Co–Nx nanocube cages. Benefiting from the ultralong interconnected multi-layered carbon nanofiber matrix, the hollow Co–Nx nanocube cages can change the charge density and electron distribution of the carbon nanofiber matrix, endowing the carbonized nanofiber carrier with special surface polarization and accelerating the electrocatalytic kinetics. Remarkably, the integrated Li–O2 batteries (LOBs) based on BH/PCNFs and EH/PCNFs electrodes exhibit significantly decreased charge/discharge polarization (0.79 V) and a long-term cyclability (147 cycles) under a cut off capacity of 500 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1. This work might be beneficial for the practically viable design and manufacture of dual-function oxygen electrocatalysts.

In the present work, a novel metal-free ORR electrocatalyst, with large specific surface area (2600 m 2 g −1 ), high content of N dopants (3.12 at.%) and 3D cross-linking hierarchically porous structure (abbreviated as LHNHPC) is readily prepared by using a modified classical carbon-aerogel method with NH 3 as the activating agent. Compared with benchmark Pt/C catalyst, it is found that, LHNHPC exhibits similar electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), superior durability and excellent methanol tolerance in basic media. The above electrochemical properties of LHNHPC are mainly attributed to the synergistic contribution of its unique hierarchical pore structure, the rich N doping and the large surface area. It can be anticipated that the proposed two-step process could be used for mass production of metal free electrocatalysts for a wide range of electrochemical devices including fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Effective bifunctional catalysts play a vital role in large-scale commercial applications of rechargeable lithium-air batteries. In this article, a metal-organic framework, MOF(Fe), was prepared by a hydrothermal process using ferric nitrate as the metal ion precursor and trimesic acid as an organic ligand. The structure of the MOF(Fe) was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption-desorption, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Thermo-gravimetric analysis. The activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the kinetic behavior of the ORR using the MOF(Fe) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry, respectively, using an alkaline electrolyte. The characterization results showed that the MOF(Fe) was highly crystalline with abundant micropores, large specific surface area and high thermal stability. The MOF(Fe) exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the ORR. The ORR mechanism varies with the applied potentials. The ORR occurs through a two-electron pathway at potentials in the range of −0.30 to −0.50 V, but shifts to four-electron pathway with the potentials in the range −0.50 to −0.95 V. In addition, the MOF(Fe) shows excellent catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline electrolyte. This work opens a new route for the development of effective non-precious metal catalysts based on MOFs for the ORR and OER.

Transition metal sulfides embedded in co-doped porous carbon materials with nitrogen and sulfur are a promising catalyst that can effectively solve the problem of slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. However, monometallic sulfides consisting of a single active component only have monofunctional catalytic activity and cannot effectively increase the rate of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), thus limiting the energy conversion efficiency of Zn-air batteries (ZAB). Herein, a unique silica template assisted in situ pyrolysis strategy is used to synthesize iron (Fe)-doped cobalt sulfide (Co 9 S 8 ) nanoparticle embedded in a honeycomb nitrogen (N), sulphur (S) co-doped porous carbon (Fe/Co 9 S 8 @NSC) electrocatalyst. The introduction of Fe increases the active component of the catalyst and further enhances the catalytic ability of Co 9 S 8 by optimizing the electronic structure through charge transfer effect. Therefore, the rich active sites of Fe/Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles anchored in N, S co-doped carbon materials with rich pore structure enable the catalysts to have good bifunctional catalytic activities of ORR and OER. In particular, the Fe/Co 9 S 8 @NSC has a high half-wave potential of 0.82 V for catalytic ORR and only needs low overpotential of 332 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for catalytic OER. In addition, the Fe/Co 9 S 8 @NSC catalyst based rechargeable ZAB also exhibits a significant specific capacity of 734 mAh g −1 and prolonged stability of 270 h, which outperforms the bulk of recently reported catalysts based on transition metal sulfides-based catalysts. This research offers a workable method for producing metal sulfides catalysts with bifunctional catalytic activity.

It is highly desirable to develop low-cost and high-efficient non-precious electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in attempt to replace the expensive Pt based catalysts for fuel cells and metal-air batteries . Herein, a novel, facile and cost-effective strategy is reported to in situ synthesize isolated single iron (Fe) atoms anchored on nitrogen doped carbon (Fe-ISA/NC) with renewable Auricularia auricular-judae as the biomass precursor. The best performing Fe-ISA/NC exhibits high specific surface area of 1107 m 2 g −1 and excellent activities for ORR in 0.1 M KOH, in terms of an onset potential of 1.0 V vs. RHE and a half-wave potential of 0.89 V vs. RHE, surpassing that of Pt/C and most reported non-precious metal catalysts . Furthermore, superior methanol tolerance and outstanding stability are observed. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Fe-N 4 moieties together with pyrrolic-N are responsible for the enhanced catalytic performance for ORR.

Nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts have been intensively investigated, but how to keep a balance between their sustainability and competitive performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is still a big challenge for energy applications. In this work, a type of bimetal- and nitrogen-codoped mesoporous carbon electrocatalyst (FeCo-N/C-800) was successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method , followed by a calcination process at 800 °C in nitrogen atmosphere and an acid-etching process. The obtained FeCo-N/C-800 can act as a high-performance ORR catalyst with high onset and half-wave potentials (0.94 and 0.85 V), a large limiting current density (5.94 mA cm −2 ) and a four-electron reaction process in 0.1 M KOH solution, which can be comparable with commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, the FeCo-N/C-800 exhibited superior long-term durability and high methanol tolerance. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of the FeCo-N/C-800 can be ascribed to the mesoporous structure (bimodal pores system), the synergetic interaction of the multiple ORR active sites, suitable N-doping level and the highly conductive carbon matrix. These structural features can promote efficiently the mass and electron transfer , provide abundant active sites for the adsorption and reaction of oxygen molecules, and thus improve the reaction kinetics. The present study not only provides a strategy for the synthesis of carbon-based electrocatalyst with high ORR catalytic activity and stability, but also demonstrates that the bimetal- and nitrogen-codoped carbon materials could be a class of competitive candidate for non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.
