In situ synthesis of calcium pimelate as a highly dispersed β-nucleating agent for improving the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene

Li Xie,Jin-Rong Zhong,Yan Li,Yue-Fei Zhang

The reaction precursors pimelic acid (Pi) and calcium stearate (CaSt) were added in situ during extrusion of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) to generate self-dispersed calcium pimelate (CaPi[IS]). The results reveal that the nucleating agents (NAs) synthesized in situ obviously affected the nucleation effect in iPP. The crystallization, mechanical properties and melting behavior of nucleated iPP were investigated. The crystallization temperature ( T c ) of iPP modified with CaPi(IS) increased by 4–5°C when compared to that of pure iPP. Especially, when the addition amount of CaPi(IS) in iPP was 0.30 wt%, the relative β-crystal concentration of iPP/CaPi(IS) reached the highest level of 96.47%, 22.71% higher than that of iPP/CaPi. However, Pi and CaSt has hardly impact on the nucleation effect in iPP. The mechanical properties of iPP show that CaPi and CaPi(IS) have excellent toughening effect on iPP while Pi and CaSt greatly improved the stiffness of iPP. Furthermore, the dispersion of these NAs in iPP was investigated by scanning electronic microscope (SEM). It can be clearly seen that the CaPi(IS) particles are uniformly distributed in the iPP after magnification.

Excellent flame retardancy and air stability through surface coordination of few-layer black phosphorus with TiL4 in epoxy resin

Wenjie Diao,Kunxin Wang,Enxiang Jiao,Hui Yang,Zhao Li,Kun Wu,Jun Shi

Black phosphorus (BP) has been attractive for many research groups as its promising properties. However, the poor air stability of BP has limited its practical applications. To simultaneously address this problem and improve the flame retardancy of BP in epoxy resin (EP), a surface coordination strategy was proposed. Herein, a titanium ligand (denoted as TiL 4 ) was designed to coordinate BP nanosheets, which can occupy the lone pair electrons of BP. The Ti–P coordination contributed to the improvement of ambient stability of BP. The serious degradation was observed from pure BP owing to the oxidation. Whereas, the surface coordination can impede the ambient degradation rate of BP by 74.07%. With the addition of 1.5 wt% TiL 4 @BP, the char yield of EP nanocomposites was increased by 20.55% due to the catalytic charring effect of TiL 4 @BP. The incorporation of 1.5 wt% TiL 4 @BP can reduce the peak of heat release rate and total heat release values of EP by 29.41% and 23.32%. The EP/TiL 4 @BP 1.5 also can pass the UL-94 V-0 rating, and its value of limiting oxygen index was enhanced by 13.60%. The improvement in the flame retardancy of BP in EP can be largely ascribed to synergistic catalytic charring effects between BP and TiL 4 . The condense and compact char layer can act as a physical barrier to restrict the exchange of pyrolytic products and the transfer of heat. In addition, the free radical quenching effect of BP nanosheets also accounted for the excellent flame retardant performance of EP. This work proposed a reference for synchronically obtaining the improvement for the air stability and flame retardant performance of BP.

Study on characteristics of the electric-field-sensitive hydrogel inspired by jelly in the ampullae of Lorenzini of elasmobranchs

Laiqian Ding,Mingyang Li,Chong Liu,Zhanwei Zhou,Jing Chen,Xueting Chen,Li Chen,Jingmin Li

The elasmobranchs can sense the weak electric field signals of marine environment and other lives to adjust follow-up activities by the jelly in their ampullae of Lorenzini, which provides a new research route for the development of ocean exploration, locating of underwater object, underwater navigation and communication. Inspired by such a characteristic of jelly, this paper presents a novel electric-field-sensitive hydrogel in response to weak electric field stimuli in surroundings. The hydrogel is made from I-carrageenan (IC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by the way of blending. The effects of CNCs on the performances of hydrogels have been investigated via the characterization of both IC/CNC blending hydrogel and pure IC hydrogel. Swelling experiments show that the equilibrium swelling ratio of hydrogel is positively related to the mass ratio of IC to CNCs. Electric field sensitivity experiments indicates that the IC/CNC blending hydrogel has a higher sensitivity than the pure IC hydrogel by comparing the bending angles of hydrogels under different electric fields, and the maximum bending angle, 0.5°, of blending hydrogel remains under the 1 mV/cm electric field. The blending hydrogel sensitive to weak electric field stimuli in this paper may provide an alternative strategy to develop intelligent response-type materials for applications of efficient underwater sensors and actuators.

Hierarchical structure and properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microporous films fabricated via thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS): Effect of presence of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)

Bin Yang,Shun Wang,Mengya Ding,Chengjun Wang,Cheng Lv,Yang Wang,Yuqing Yang,Nuo Zhang,Zhiqiang Shi,Jiasheng Qian,Ru Xia,Yirong Fang

In this study, HDPE/UHMWPE microporous films were prepared by blending UHMWPE and HDPE with DOP as the diluent via thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) method. Morphological studies showed that the phase separation mode of the mixed systems was hardly changed in the presence of UHMWPE. Both average pore size and porosity of the blend films increased firstly and then decreased with increasing UHMWPE content. When UHMWPE content reached 1.5 wt%, both porosity and average pore size of the film reached their maximum values (with a porosity of 84.8% and an average pore size of 0.79 μm). The addition of UHMWPE was found to not only enhance the thermal stability of the HDPE/UHMWPE blend films, but also greatly reduce their thermal shrinkage rate as well as the closed cell temperature, which made the diaphragms containing UHMWPE have good prospect for the application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Microparticle-hydrogel hybrids for sustained release of dual bioactive compounds

Zhicheng Deng,Jinjun Li,Yun Chen,Chao Huang,Nanjing Zhong,Yong Hu

A novel Cur/TPP-β-CD/CS/Vc microparticles (MPs) filled CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel was prepared by dispersed the chitosan/vitamin C (CS/Vc) complex and curcumin/TPP-β-cyclodextrin (Cur/TPP-β-CD) complex in the hydrogel precursor of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Structural properties of the MPs/CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, TG, rheological, and texture analyzer. It was found that the polymeric MPs with a diameter of about 2.5 μm were homogenously embedded in the composite hydrogel by hydrogen bonding and electronic force, resulting in obvious enhanced mechanical strength and stability of the MPs hybrid hydrogel. In vitro release studies show that the release of Cur and Vc can be more efficiently controlled by the different encapsulation pathways. Moreover, the preferential release of the Cur than that of Vc has been confirmed by the two-dimensional ultraviolet correlation spectroscopy. Therefore, the MPs/CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel can be used for independently controlled release of dual bioactive compounds during codelivery.

A DOPO-anchored benzothiadiazole derivative toward efficiently P/N/S synergistic flame retarding of epoxy thermoset

Wu Zhang,Weikang Xia,Yasheng Shi,Changlin Zhou,Ran Chen,Lei Wang,Jinqing Qu

Flame-retarded epoxy thermosets are highly desirable for electronics-related basic materials in the new-generation information applications. Herein, a DOPO-anchored benzothiadiazole flame retardant, namely DOPO-BTD , is designed and synthesized for P/N/S synergistic flame-retarded epoxy thermosets. DOPO-BTD possesses good thermal stability and excellent compatibility with the epoxy matrix. As reflected by UL 94 test, the DOPO-BTD coated EP passes the V0 rating and achieves a higher LOI value of 34.6% at ultralow P content of 0.39 wt%. The investigation of the DOPO-BTD -triggered P/N/S synergistic flame-retarded effect by thermal images further validated the flame retarded efficacy and dramatic inhibition of the flame. Meanwhile, the incorporation of 4.8 wt% DOPO-BTD into the epoxy matrix, the PHRR, THR, SPR, TSP, and COP are significantly decreased by 37.97%, 27.44%, 25.49%, 19.83%, and 31.70%, respectively. Additionally, the fire growth index (FGI) is sharply dropped 26.06%. Moreover, the TGIR and TGMS results convince the flame-retarded mechanism of DOPO-BTD through the combination of the gas-phase and condensed-phase pathways. The P/N/S synergistic DOPO-BTD can serve as a promising flame retardant for efficiently fabricating the flame-retarded epoxy thermosets, and this study sheds light on the development of multiple elements synergistic flame-retardants for functional polymers with great application potential.

A robust, stretchable, transparent, solvent-resistant, and fluorescent composite: Anchoring carbon dots in polyurethane to obtain new photoluminescent emissions

Na Li,Sha Wu,Dan Luo,Guangming Liang,Yulong Xiao,Lei Xu,Rui Wang,Yao Xiao,Ping He

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit vivid photoluminescence in solutions, but show no or weak photoluminescent emissions in solid state. In this paper, we prepared a polyurethane (PU)/CD composite with solid-state fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation by anchoring oil-soluble CDs in a crosslinked PU matrix through chemical reaction. This polymer composite has high robustness, transmittance, and organic solvent resistance, as well as good stretching ability. Interestingly, since the chemical reaction between the CDs and the PU matrix changes the UV absorption feature of the CDs, the PU/CD composite has blue (near 405 nm), cyan (near 470 nm), and green (near 495 nm) fluorescent emissions, even though the CD solution just possesses green (near 530 nm) fluorescent emissions. This PU/CD composite shows the possibility of application in optoelectronic devices.

A small addition of reduced graphene oxide to protect fluorosilicone rubber from thermal oxidative degradation

Yang You,Anna Zheng,Dafu Wei,Xiang Xu,Yong Guan,Jianding Chen

As an essential elastomer used in edge technologies, fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) suffers serious oxidative aging problem when serving at high temperature. In this study, a small amount of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was added to FSR, and the resulting rGO/FSR compounds were vulcanized using 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl) peroxyhexane as the vulcanizer. The dispersion of rGO was investigated using scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties and thermal-oxidative stability of the rGO/FSR vulcanizates were investigated via thermal aging test at 230°C for 72 h, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and isothermal degradation test at 280, 320, and 350°C. The results showed the small addition of rGO (0.5 wt%) significantly improved the thermo-oxidative stability of FSR. In particular, the FSR incorporating of 0.5 wt% of rGO could maintain more than 85% of tensile strength after aging at 230°C for 72 h. The FSR incorporating of 0.5 wt% of rGO can maintain more than 90% of initial weight after aging at 350°C for 12 h. The experiment of scavenging hydroxyl radical by rGO, and quantum chemistry calculation indicated rGO containing aryloxy radicals can scavenge the initial radicals during thermal degradation of FSR, which might be prime reason for the antioxidant properties of rGO.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates dynamically cross-linked by a tailored small molecule

Wei Liu,Jianping Ding,Yukun Chen

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) with more features and functions are able to find broader applications, which is increasingly desired in our daily lives. However, great challenges were facing to develop novel TPVs with integrated properties such as reinforcement, recycling, and shape memory. Herein, we report a simple and effective route to prepare mechanically robust, recyclable and shape memory-epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/polylactic acid (PLA) TPVs by employing a tailored cross-linker (FDP) containing triple dynamic covalent bonds instead of conventional cross-linkers. The ENR phase in ENR/PLA TPVs evolved into a regular continuous phase and PLA was grafted onto ENR chain segments through FDP. The TPVs exhibited a tensile behavior of classical elastomers rather than that of plastics, with a tensile strength of 7.8 MPa and elongation at break of 174%, increased by 1.5 times and 2.9 times, respectively as compared to the traditional TPVs vulcanized by peroxide. The topology rearrangement of the cross-linked ENR networks in the TPVs can be accomplished at high temperatures. Furthermore, its regular phase structure also bestowed an excellent shape memory ability on the TPVs. This work is promising to provide a new design idea for the development of high-performance TPVs using readily available raw materials.

A novel nanofibrous film with antibacterial, antioxidant, and thermoregulatory functions fabricated by coaxial electrospinning

Tianliang Dai,Zhuofan Qin,Shuoshuo Wang,Lina Wang,Juming Yao,Guocheng Zhu,Baochun Guo,Jiri Militky,Mohanapriya Venkataraman,Ming Zhang

Ordinary packaging film only has the functions of storing food and transporting food, while the external environment can affect the storage period of food. In this study, a common degradable material, polylactic acid (PLA), was chosen as the base material, and the material was endowed with antibacterial function by adding curcumin (Cur). Coaxial electrostatic spinning technology has a unique advantage in the preparation of core-sheath structured fibers, and a PLA/Cur/n-octadecane (OD) phase change thermoregulation fiber was prepared by selecting OD as the core material, which gives the fiber film thermoregulation function. The fiber structure, mechanical properties, and thermal properties were characterized. The antibacterial activity of the composite films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The temperature regulation function of the composite film was evaluated, and the unique core-sheath structure endowed the fiber film with a temperature regulation function. The storage of bananas was studied in which to explore the effect on food preservation. The composite films showed excellent bactericidal as well as antioxidant properties and successfully delayed the warming phenomenon.

Study on catechol/tetraethylenepentamine and nano zinc oxide co-modifying ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber surface to improve interfacial adhesion

Zhonghang Fang,Qunzhang Tu,Zhiyuan Chen,Xinmin Shen,Ming Pan,Kang Liang,Xuan Yang

To improve interfacial adhesion to rubber matrix, a lower cost surface modification strategy of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber was proposed by replacing expensive dopamine with the two-component system of catechol/tetraethylenepentamine (CAT/TEPA) and then depositing nano zinc oxide (ZnO NPs). By Michael addition reaction or Schiff base reaction between CAT and TEPA, the CAT/TEPA layer was coated on the fiber surface, and further served as a secondary functional platform to realize ZnO NPs deposition through coordination. The surface morphology, chemical structure and composition, wettability and thermal property of the UHMWPE fibers were investigated to evaluate the process and effect of the surface modification. The results of the single-filament tensile test indicated that the tensile strength of the UHMWPE fibers has no deterioration after the modification treatment. In comparison with the original fiber, the pull-out test showed that the highest interface adhesion between the modified UHMWPE fibers and rubber matrix increased by 80.4%. Additionally, it was found that the appropriate zinc ion concentration played an important role in the modification effect.

Double dynamic bonds tough hydrogel with high self-healing properties based on acylhydrazone bonds and borate bonds

Lijun Chen,Sui Wang,Zhiyong Guo,Yufang Hu

Hydrogels with excellent self-healing properties have specific applications in smart polymer materials, but they often do not have excellent mechanical properties, or the preparation process of hydrogels is too complicated. Here, we prepared a multi-functional intelligent hydrogel using a simple water bath one-pot method through the synergistic effect of dual dynamic cross-linked agents, including acylhydrazone bonds (the first cross-linked agent) and borate ester bonds (the second cross-linked agent), at the same time hydrogen bonds provided physical interaction. The hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing ability (up to 91%) and extraordinary mechanical strength (tensile stress 173.1405 kPa and hysteresis energy of 1.8659 MJ m −3 ). The research used chemical cross-linked (acylhydrazone bonds and borate ester bonds) and physical cross-linked (hydrogen bonds). The prepared hydrogel had the dual advantages of excellent self-healing performance and high mechanical strength. The hydrogel can be used in smart materials, such as working pressure tissues and sensing materials that require a certain degree of mechanical strength and self-healing properties, and also provides a design strategy for preparing hydrogels with high mechanical strength and excellent self-healing properties.
