The hydrophobic soft coating has low ice adhesion strength and hydrophobic stability in low-temperature and high-humidity environments, which is crucial for preventing ice formation on infrastructure and transportation systems. However, creating mechanically durable hydrophobic soft coatings using simple methods remains challenging. In this study, a high-hardness particle-toughened, self-stratifying organic layer with high photothermal conversion rate was developed to enhance coating durability and ice-repellent performance. By optimizing the ratio of dopamine (DA) and sodium alginate (SA), a hydrophobic photothermal agent (DPSn) with high hardness and a significant light-heat effect was synthesized. A durable, hydrophobic photothermal anti-ice coating (AR/20 %PDMS/x%DPS1) with varying DPS1 amounts was successfully created using a straightforward one-step spray method, utilizing the self-stratification characteristics of acrylic resin (AR) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), along with the toughening effect of DPSn. The fiber cross-linked structure of DPS1 achieved a photothermal conversion rate of 87.5 %. Adding 4 wt% DPS1 increased the surface temperature of the AR/20 %PDMS coating to 96.5 ± 2.4 °C and boosted the coating’s adhesion strength from 6.70 ± 0.3 MPa to 7.23 ± 0.7 MPa. The AR/20 %PDMS/4%DPS1 coating demonstrated excellent anti-/de-icing performance after 60 friction cycles, 60 icing/de-icing cycles, and 132 h of acid-base immersion. Its simple preparation process and durable ice-repellent properties make it highly suitable for practical applications in photothermal hydrophobic soft coatings.

The low viscosity of water-lubricated films compromises their load-bearing capacity, posing challenges for practical application. Enhancing the lubrication stability of these films under load is critical for the successful use of seawater-lubricated bearings in engineering. Polydopamine (PDA) shows great potential to address this issue due to its strong bio-inspired adhesion and hydration lubrication properties. Thus, PDA nanoparticles and seawater suspensions were synthesized to promote adhesive lubricating film formation under dynamic friction. The lubrication properties of PDA suspensions were evaluated on Cu ball and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) tribo-pairs, with a detailed comparison to seawater. The results show PDA nanoparticles provide excellent adhesion and lubrication, enhancing the formation of lubricating films during friction with seawater. Under identical conditions, PDA suspensions demonstrated the lowest friction coefficient and minimal wear. At 3 N, friction decreased by 56% and wear by 47% compared to distilled water. These findings suggest a novel strategy for using PDA as a lubricant in seawater for engineering applications.

Epoxy resin (EP), widely used in composites, exhibits brittleness and high internal stress due to its high cross-linking density after curing, driving extensive modification studies. This work integrates polyurethane (PU) via interpenetrating networks and polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles to fabricate PU-PDA/EP composites, investigating their mechanical and self-healing properties. Tensile/hardness tests reveal improved mechanical strength, while infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy clarify the self-healing mechanism: PDA forms hydrogen bonds with epoxy groups, enabling autonomous repair within the matrix. Digital scattering correlation method analysis tracks deformation behavior, showing stress–strain, gray coefficient (Stc), and X-direction strain (Sts) evolution under load before/after repair in diverse environments. Optimal self-healing occurs at 0.6% PDA: specimens regain 104.45% of initial strength (28.57 MPa postrepair vs. 28.16 MPa initial) after 3-day ambient healing, surpassing original performance. The study confirms PDA's dual role in enhancing toughness and triggering reversible hydrogen-bond-driven repair, offering a facile strategy to overcome EP's brittleness.

Implants and other medical devices are prone to bacterial infections on their surface due to bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. In this study, silver nanoparticles were generated in situ onto regulated synthesized polydopamine particles, and the optimal amount of silver nitrate was determined. Composite micro–nano particles were then deposited on a titanium alloy surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to confirm that the titanium alloy surface was successfully coated with PDA-Ag. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and three-dimensional optical profilometry were utilized to analysis the morphology of the micro–nano particles and the surface morphology after deposition. The diameters of the polydopamine particles and silver nanoparticles were 150 nm and 25 nm, respectively. The surface roughness values decreased from 0.357 μm to 25.253 μm because of the coated PDA-Ag. Morphology and chemical composition analyses of the modified surface indicated that the PDA-Ag particles were uniformly bonded to the substrate surface. Antimicrobial assays illustrated that the PDA-Ag-modified surface possessed resistance againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureusattachment, with an effectiveness of 96.14 and 85.78%, respectively. This work provides a new strategy and theoretical basis for tackling medical-related surface infections caused by bacterial adhesion.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by dental plaque biofilm. To prevent disease progression and achieve successful periodontal tissue repair, it is necessary to simultaneously address the need for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic effects within deep lesions. This study proposes a novel approach using a NIR light-responsive nanocomposite for enhanced ossification and combating bacterial biofilm infections in periodontitis. The nanocomposite incorporates polydopamine-coated calcium carbonate nanoparticles and BMP-2, which exhibits excellent photothermal conversion efficiency for bacterial eradication. Additionally, polydopamine also serves as an efficient ROS scavenger, thereby reducing the inflammatory response associated with periodontal disease. The core CaCO 3 interacts with BMP-2 to promote bone regeneration. This strategy demonstrates a synergistic effect by integrating PTT, ROS therapy, and osteogenic therapy in treating biofilm-induced periodontitis. Moreover, the CaCO 3 @BMP-2/PDA NPs reduced the protein expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β and mitigated LPS-induced inflammation. This combination not only achieved critical protective effects but also fostered the promotion of osteoblast differentiation.

The constant and noninvasive tracking of the distribution and degradation of engineered hydrogel scaffolds using fluorescent probes is considered to be one of the important research studies. Conventional fluorophores were simply mixed into hydrogels by physical doping, and they suffered from photoinstability or UV–vis light excitation, which usually led to the potential leak of the fluorescent tag and imprecise tracking results. In this article, upconversion nanoparticles, NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaGdF4 (UCNPs) with near-infrared light (NIR) excitation, were synthesized and were coated with polydopamine (PDA). A biodegradable composite hydrogel OSA-I-CMCS-I-UCNPs@PDA (“I” means “linked-by”) was constructed by the UCNPs@PDA, serving as both the construction unit and NIR-excited fluorescent probe, where carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) was used as the cross-linker to chemically cross-link UCNPs@PDA and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) based on dynamic covalent Schiff-base linkages. It is demonstrated that the composite hydrogels possess enhanced mechanical strength, excellent self-healing capacity, injectable performance, and good biocompatibility with the tissue. In addition, the composite hydrogels possess a deep penetrating ability from UCNPs@PDA in vitro through about 10 mm thick chicken strips. A mimetic lysozyme biodegradation test was performed for 108 h in vitro for evaluating the feasibility and accuracy of UCNPs@PDA in tracking the hydrogel degradation. The degradation signals were obtained by the decrease in fluorescence intensity, which were well consistent with the weight changes in composite hydrogels, suggesting the accuracy of the UCNPs@PDA in consecutively monitoring the hydrogel degradation in vitro. With these superior properties, the composite hydrogels are expected to be promising candidates for various biomedical fields, for example, as tissue engineering or delivery carriers in vivo.

To avoid false response caused by increase of environmental humidity is important for hydrophilic polydopamine (PDA) based QCM formaldehyde sensor. In order to achieve this purpose, superhydrophobic polymerized n -octadecylsiloxane (PODS) nanostructure is used to cover the surface of PDA film to prevent false response from happening. Compared with pristine PDA based QCM sensor, the sensor based on PODS-PDA composite sensing material shows satisfactory performance on avoiding false response and long-term stable formaldehyde sensing properties. This novel strategy offers a new method to reduce probability of false response resulted from humidity change.

Periodontitis is a chronic oral inflammatory disease with the characteristic of excess oxidative stress in the inflammatory site, dramatically decreasing the quality of life. Studies show that nanozymes can be ideal candidates for ROS scavenging in periodontitis. Here, we design a multipath anti-inflammatory mesoporous polydopamine@cerium oxide nanobowl (mPDA@CeO2 NB) with multienzyme mimicking properties, which combines the advantages of both CeO2 NP and mPDA NB for synergistically eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS), including hydroxyl radical (•OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide (O2•–). Besides, the erythrocyte-like structure of mNBs makes them a facility for cell uptake, and the mesopores can load both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs for combined anti-inflammatory therapy. In vitro and in vivo experiments prove that the combination of CeO2 and mPDA can synergistically achieve multiple complementary ROS eliminations and suppression of ROS-induced inflammation. Moreover, the ROS regulation plus anti-inflammatory drugs in one mPDA@CeO2 NB prevents the progression of periodontitis in a mouse model. Therefore, the design of mPDA@CeO2 NB with these excellent properties provides a therapeutic strategy for inflammatory diseases.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has attracted considerable focus for preparing porous bone repair scaffolds to promote bone regeneration. Inspired by organic-inorganic components and the porous structure of natural bone, novel porous degradable scaffolds have been printed using hydroxyapatite (HA), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), and polydopamine (PDA). The well-designed HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds exhibited a porous structure with 60.5 ± 4.6% porosity and 415 ± 87 μm in mode pore diameter. The weight loss percentage (WL%) of the HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds reached about 17% during a 10-week degradation in vitro . The degradation process between the CMCS and HA induced the release of calcium ions. Using commercial product as the contrast material, the osteogenic properties of the scaffolds were assessed in vivo . The implantation and degradation of HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds had no adverse effects on the kidney and liver of rabbits with no inflammatory response in the implantation sites. The micro-CT and histology data suggested that the HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds could effectively stimulate new bone formation within the femoral lacuna defect region of rabbits versus blank control at 12 weeks after implantation. Surface cortical bone was generated in the defect area in the HA/CMCS/PDA group; the defect in the blank group remained obvious. HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds had excellent biodegradability matching the formation of new bone during implantation. In conclusion, 3D-printed HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds have remarkable potential as a new material for repairing bone defects.

A facile methodology is presented to construct a multifunctional nanocomposite that integrates photothermal therapy and specific drug release into a single nanostructure. Firstly, magnetic Fe3O4@polydopamine core–shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA) were synthesized via a reversed-phase microemulsion approach. By varying the amount of DA, Fe3O4@PDA with a particle size of 28–38 nm can be obtained. To further ensure the monodispersity, biocompatibility and specific uptake, PEG and lactobionic acid (LA) were grafted onto Fe3O4@PDA (LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG), whose fast photothermal conversion is derived by the combination of Fe3O4 and PDA with high near infrared (NIR) absorption. Then, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was adopted as the typical anticancer drug, which was loaded onto LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG via electrostatic and π–π stacking interaction. The release kinetics investigation further demonstrated the acid/heat-triggered DOX release. HepG2 cells (hepatocellular cell line) were used as the target cancer cells, and the fast uptake was due to the nanoparticle size and abundant asialoglycoprotein receptors on HepG2 cells. Besides, an external magnetic field also can improve the uptake, especially when the magnet is placed at the bottom of the cell disk. The enhanced specific cytotoxicity toward HepG2 cells was also ascribed to the synergistic effect of chemo- and photothermal therapy. Based on the novel properties, the LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-DOX nanocomposite showed its potential application in hepatocyte therapy.

An ascorbic acid (AA) sensor was constructed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CdS quantum dots (CdS QDs) and polydopamine (PDA) to detect trace AA sensitively. FRET occurred due to the broad absorption spectrum of PDA completely overlapped with the narrow emission spectrum of CdS QDs. The fluorescence of CdS QDs was quenched and in the “off” state. When AA was present, the conversion of DA to PDA was hindered and the FRET disappeared, resulting in the fluorescence of CdS QDs in an “on” state. Importantly, the degree of fluorescence recovery of CdS QDs displayed a desirable linear correlation with the concentration of AA in the range of 5.0–100.0 μmol/L, the linear equation isy=0.0119cAA+0.3113, and the detection limit is 1.16 μmol/L (S/N = 3,n= 9). There was almost no interference with common amino acid, glucose and biological sulfhydryl small molecules to AA. Trace amount of AA in vitamin C tablets were determined and satisfactory results were obtained; the recoveries were observed to be 98.01–100.7%.Keywords:CdS quantum dots;PDA;fluorescence resonance energy transfer;ascorbic acid

Although membrane separation technology has been widely used in the treatment of oily wastewater, the complexity and high cost of the membrane preparation, as well as its poor stability, limit its further development. In this study, via the vacuum-assisted suction filtration method, polydopamine (PDA)-coated TiO2nanoparticles were tightly attached and embedded on both sides of laboratory filter paper (FP). The resultant FP possessed the typical wettability of high hydrophilicity in the air with the water contact angle (WCA) of 28°, superoleophilicity with the oil contact angle (OCA) close to 0°, underwater superoleophobicity with the underwater OCA greater than 150°, and superhydrophobicity under the water with the underoil WCA over 150° for five kinds of organic solvents (carbon tetrachloride, toluene, n-hexane, n-octane, and iso-octane). The separation efficiency of immiscible oil/water, oil-in-water, and water-in-oil emulsions using the modified FP is higher than 99%. After 17 cycles of emulsion separation, a high separation efficiency of 99% was still maintained for the FP, along with good chemical and mechanical stability. In addition, successful separation and purification were also realized for the oil-in-water emulsion that contained the methylene blue (MB) dye, along with the complete degradation of MB in an aqueous solution under UV irradiation.Keywords:TiO2@PDA;filter paper;oil/water separation;emulsion separation;purification
