Preparation of PVDF-TrFE based electrospun nanofibers decorated with PEDOT-CNT/rGO composites for piezo-electric pressure sensor

Ahmed Arsalan,Jia Yunming,Huang Yi,Khoso Nazakat Ali,Deb Hridam,Fan Qinguo,Shao Jianzhong

We developed a high-performance electrically conductive and transparent PVDF-TrFE based electrode for piezoelectric pressures sensor using the electrospinning technique. The electrode was produced by depositing the reduced graphene oxide (rGO), multiwall carbon nanotubes (rGO-MCNTs) via spray coating. Various concentration of rGO and MCNTs were used and optimized for improved electrical performance of the resultant electrode. The deposition of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was successfully achieved by using vapor phase polymerization (VPP). The morphological characteristics of the as-prepared hybrid composite nanofiber mats were analyzed by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and UV–visible spectroscopy. The electrical performance of the fabricated composite nanofibers was measured by using a four-point probe device. The results showed significant enhancement in electrical conductivity of the hybrid nanocomposite which increased up to 3916 S cm −1 and sensitivity of the developed pressure sensor was achieved 67.4 kPa −1 . This work suggests that the hybrid nanocomposite can be used for the transparent electrodes in a piezoelectric pressure sensor.

Modification of PEDOT: PSS to enhance device efficiency and stability of the Quasi-2D perovskite light-emitting diodes

Yueqiao Li,Wei Wang,Jie Dong,Yao Lu,Xiaofeng Huang,Yuan Niu,Bo Qiao,Suling Zhao,Zheng Xu,Aliaksandr Smirnov,Dandan Song

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) is a hole transport layer (HTL) that is often employed in a diverse array of optoelectronic devices, such as perovskite solar cells and perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). By simply doping lithium fluoride (LiF) into PEDOT: PSS, we demonstrate that the electrical characteristics of the HTL can be modified. Especially in quasi-2D perovskite LEDs, the crystallization process is regulated by LiF modification, leading to reduced phase impurity defects and improved carrier transport in the perovskite emission layer. Therefore, the luminance and efficiency of the quasi-2D PeLEDs are notably enhanced. The optimized PeLED with LiF modification exhibits a peak luminance of 21517 cd m −2 with 317% higher than the standard PeLED; and a high current efficiency of 39.8 cd A −1 with 237% higher than the standard PeLED. Moreover, the device stability is also improved with a nearly doubled half lifetime due to the reduced phase impurities. The work demonstrates a facile yet effective method for altering PEDOT: PSS hole transport layer, emphasizing the critical role of the underneath layer in the crystallization of quasi-2D perovskites.

Wearable Corneal Biosensors Fabricated from PEDOT Functionalized Sulfur-Doped Graphene for Use in the Early Detection of Myopia

Wenjing Zhang,Gongxian Dong,Haihua Feng,Suyan Shan,Libin Huang,Feng Yuan,Bijun Bao,Lu Yan,Zhaolin Xia,Tom Lawson,Jun Chen,Jia Qu,Yong Liu

Myopia is an irreversible visual disorder. Its pathogenic mechanism is not completely determined. This lack of understanding has led to difficulties in its early detection and prevention. Herein, it is reported that the content of dopamine (DA) inside tears is related to myopia diopter. Changes in DA are detected by the use of a wearable corneal biosensor. The biosensor is prepared by electrodeposition of the enzyme tyrosinase and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) functionalized sulfur-doped graphene onto a self-designed corneal microelectrode. This leads to a high-performance biosensor with a high sensitivity (of 12.9 µA × 10 −3 m −1 cm −2 ), a good detection limit (of 101 × 10 −9 m ), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. In vivo sensing tests on rabbits confirm a linear relationship between DA added to the animal eyes and the current response of the biosensor. Further tests on human tears sourced from defocus-induced myopia patients who have various myopia diopters show that the biosensor outputted a sensitive current signal that is related to the number of myopia diopters. This suggests there is an underlying relationship between myopia diopters and DA content in tears. It may provide a novel approach to a better understanding of myopia formation and its prevention.

Controllable vapor phase polymerization of PEDOT films using imidazole as an inhibitor and their electrical and electrochromic properties

Wei Wang,Di Xu,Aibin Huang,Huihui Yuan,Junjie Xie,Xinyu Chen,Yunlong He,Tao Zhang,Hujiang Shen

PEDOT films were fabricated by vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) with different inhibitor contents in oxidant-containing solutions, and were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV/vis transmittance spectra, atomic force microscopy, electrical conductivity and electrochromic measurements. The imidazole which serves as an inhibitor plays key roles on the polymerization reaction, and varying its content results in drastically different properties of the PEDOT films. In the imidazole/Fe(III) p -toluenesulfonate (Im/Fe) weight ratio range of 0∼0.25, the rate of polymerization can be significantly slowed down by increasing the Im/Fe ratio. The optimum Im/Fe ratio of 0.1 and polymerization time of 3 h results in PEDOT films with the highest conductivity on glass substrate (626 S/cm). Higher doping level is found in PEDOT films fabricated with the Im/Fe ratio above 0.1, causing low conductivity due to their loose morphology. The electrochromic properties of the films can be enhanced by prolonging the polymerization time to 3 h. It is found that the transmittance difference at 550 nm is above 10 % in PEDOT films fabricated with 3 h of polymerization. An electrochromic device is assembled and its coloring time is less than 3 s.

Synthesis of monodispersed PEDOT/Au hollow nanospheres and its application for electrochemical determination of dopamine and uric acid

Ahmat Ali,Ruxangul Jamal,Tursun Abdiryim,Xueli Huang

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/Gold (PEDOT/Au) hollow nanospheres with the ratio of EDOT and HAuCl 4 from 2:1 to 1:2 were synthesized by in-situ polymerization method. The synergism between the PEDOT and Au explored for detection of Dopamine (DA) and Uric acid (UA) in neutral phosphate buffer solutions (PBS 7.0). It was found that the monodispersed PEDOT and PEDOT/Au hollow nanospheres had been successfully prepared. Electrochemical experiments showed that the PEDOT/Au(1:1) modified electrode revealed excellent electrocatalytic activity with faster electron charge transfer kinetics. The results from differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) experiments revealed that the PEDOT/Au(1:1) electrode has excellent linear response with 0.15   μμ–330   μM and 1.5   μM–150   μM for the determination of DA and UA, respectively. The detection limits(S/N   =   3) were found to be 0.07   μM and 0.08   μM for determination of DA and UA, respectively. The PEDOT/Au(1:1) modified electrode also had good reproducibility, repeatability and excellent stability.

Light-driven self-powered biosensor for ultrasensitive organophosphate pesticide detection via integration of the conjugated polymer-sensitized CdS and enzyme inhibition strategy

Panpan Gai,Shuxia Zhang,Wen Yu,Haiyin Li,Feng Li

Herein, a light-driven self-powered biosensor based on a photoelectrochemical enzymatic fuel cell (PEFC) was proposed for ultrasensitive organophosphate pesticide (OP) detection. To construct this fuel cell, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-sensitized CdS quantum dot (PEDOT/CdS) photoanode and multiwalled carbon nanotubes/gold nanoparticals/bilirubin oxidase (CNTs/AuNPs/BOD) biocathode were elaborately designed. Initially, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) immobilized on the CdS/PEDOT photoanode could hydrolyze acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCh) into thiocholine as the electron donor to enhance the charge separation efficiency; thus, PEFC produced relatively high open circuit voltage (EOCV) upon illumination. OPs could inhibit the AChE enzymatic catalytic activity on hydrolysis, and in this case, a smaller EOCV obtained. Thus, based on the constructed PEFC, self-powered biosensing of OPs was realized, and the detection limit was as low as 0.012 ng mL−1 (S/N = 3), which was comparable or superior to those of the reported methods. In this study, we not only constructed a facile, ultrasensitive and low-cost sensing platform for OP detection, but also provided an ingenious idea for designing light-driven self-powered biosensing based on PEFC.

Nano-engineered PEDOT(MXene)/PVDF(HFP) bilayer membranes for dual-mode flexible sensing and machine learning-guided signal recognition

Pingping Wu,Lin Li,Qilin Guo,Sijing Zhang,Yuanzhen Zhou

Flexible nanostructured sensors that combine electrical conductivity, mechanical robustness, and multimodal recognition capability are crucial for next-generation wearable electronics and intelligent human-machine interfaces. This study reports a dual-mode flexible sensor based on a bilayer PEDOT(MXene)-PVDF(HFP) composite membrane (denoted as PMPH), rationally designed via electrochemical polymerization and solvent-driven interface regulation. Through dual-dopant optimization and dimethyl sulfoxide-induced structural rearrangement, the PEDOT chains exhibit a transition from benzenoid to quinoid configurations, while MXene nanosheets provide a highly conductive and mechanically resilient framework. The resulting PMPH membrane displays superior conductivity, large stretchability (up to 1200%), and stable pressure and strain responses. The dual-mode flexible sensor not only distinguishes stretching and pressing behaviors but also achieves an intelligent classification accuracy of 92.13% through a machine-learning-assisted data recognition model. This study demonstrates a simple yet efficient strategy to couple conductive polymer-MXene hybrids with flexible fluoropolymers, bridging materials design and intelligent sensing toward advanced wearable devices.

Label-free and ultra-sensitive H1N1 influenza virus immunosensor based on a triple-enhanced LIG/PB/PEDOT/Au microelectrode

Yanxia Li,Fangqing Yu,Wen Li,Liping Liu

Laser-induced 3D porous graphene enables scalable, low-cost biosensing. • PB/PEDOT/Au composite synergistically enhances stability, antifouling, and electroactivity. • The immunosensor achieves ultrasensitive detection of H1N1 and a wide dynamic range. • Label-free and pretreatment-free detection is successfully demonstrated in complex biological matrices. As a major cause of seasonal influenza, H1N1 virus requires advanced monitoring. Custom-patterned conductive graphene microelectrodes are essential for building relevant sensing platforms. In this study, a label-free H1N1 electrochemical immunosensor was developed based on a sequentially engineered laser-induced graphene (LIG)/Prussian blue (PB)/poly3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT)/Au nanocomposite microelectrode. Unlike previous studies that focused on single-component modifications, our approach integrates multiple functional layers to synergistically enhance signal stability, sensitivity, and antifouling performance. The LIG microelectrode was fabricated using a low-cost intelligent semiconductor laser, which directly patterned a three-electrode system on a polyimide (PI) film. Subsequently, PB, PEDOT, and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were sequentially electrodeposited onto the LIG electrode. PB served as an ultrasensitive electrochemical signal reporter, while the encapsulating PEDOT polymer layer not only stabilized the electrical signal of PB in neutral environments but also significantly enhanced the electrode's antifouling properties. To construct the label-free immunosensor, Au NPs were introduced to improve conductivity and were functionalized via Au–S–COOH bonding for the immobilization of H1N1 antibodies. Under optimal conditions, the LIG/PB/PEDOT/Au composite electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical activity and conductivity. The fabricated immunosensor demonstrated ultrahigh sensitivity with a wide concentration range from 0.1 fg mL −1 to 100 ng mL −1 , and an extremely low detection limit of 0.063 fg mL −1 . The results confirmed that the immunosensor possesses excellent selectivity, precision, and stability, and is thus suitable for the analysis of complex biological samples without the need for labeled probes and sample pretreatment. Therefore, this environmentally friendly and label-free immunosensing platform represents a significant advancement in point-of-care biosensing and demonstrates strong potential for rapid on-site screening and prevention of infectious disease outbreaks. A label-free immunosensor based on laser-induced graphene microelectrode modified with PB/PEDOT/Au nanocomposite enables ultra-sensitive detection of H1N1 virus in complex biological samples without pretreatment. Ternary nanohybrid of thiolated PEDOT, Au, and N-Doped graphene for synergistic electroanalysis and multiple sensing of bioactive molecules

Ali Ahmat,Guoping Zhang,Maimaiti Ayiguli,jing Li,Xuan Li

A ternary composite of thiolated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), Au, Nitrogen-doped graphene was prepared via straightforward physical mixing. The optimal conditions for the uniform loading of Au nanoparticles on the composite materials were studied. The interaction between the polymer and Au nanoparticles as well as the influence of nitrogen-doped graphene on the electrocatalytic activity of the composite materials are discussed. The results show that the thiol groups on the polymer and the N atoms in the nitrogen-doped graphene have a strong adsorption effect on the Au nanoparticles, so that the Au nanoparticles are more uniformly loaded on the surface of polymer and nitrogen-doped graphene during the mixing process. In addition, the enhanced electron transfer rate, the high dispersibility of polymer and nitrogen-doped graphene, as well as the large specific surface area and catalytic activity of Au nanoparticles improve the electrocatalytic activity of the composite materials. Under the optimal conditions, the binary composite-modified electrodes exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity with the detection linear ranges of 0.5–65 μM, 0.02–60 μM, 0.06–55 μM and 0.1–70 μM for ascorbic acid, dopamine, uric acid, and nitrite ions, respectively. Preparation of High Elongation and Low Hysteresis Conductive Hydrogels Strain Sensor Using Flake-like PEDOT Particles as Conductive Fillers

Xiyuan Duan,Shimin Wang,Daheng Wang,Yu Gong,Ziwei Jiang

Conductive hydrogel strain sensors using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as fillers are rapidly advancing and are emerging as candidates for monitoring devices such as wearable electronic skin. However, due to limitations such as low elongation and high hysteresis, it is difficult to fully leverage its promising sensor properties in practical applications. In this study, we synthesized flake-like PEDOT particles (FP particles) and used Polyacrylamide (PAM) as the hydrogel matrix to fabricate a conductive hydrogel strain sensor. These particles were obtained by grinding PEDOT particles prepared via a template-free method. After swelling with ethylene glycol (EG) and assembly with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), the FP particles become porous and contain many hydroxyl groups. This design enables the adsorption of acrylamide (AM) monomers within FP particles, facilitating the in situ polymerization of PAM onto the PEDOT/PVA chains, thereby yielding a dual-network structure with strong entanglements. This gives the sensor high elongation and very low hysteresis. In addition, it offers favorable sensor performance, including high sensitivity, high repeatability, and reliability. This strain sensor can be used in wearable electronic skin applications for facial monitoring and motion detection.

A pioneering study on EDOT recovery from the PEDOT wastewater: Integration of COSMO-SAC prediction, experiment, and process simulation

Yin Zhu,Zhikai Cao,Liming Che,Haiqiang Lin,Quancong Zhang,Hua Zhou

3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) is a significant material in the electronics industry for synthesizing Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). However, a significant amount of EDOT (>50%) is discarded in wastewater during the electrochemical polymerization of PEDOT owing to the low conversion of EDOT. To address this issue, a process for recovering EDOT through extraction and subsequent distillation was presented. Toluene was chosen as the extractant through a combination of COSMO-SAC and experiments, and the extraction mechanism was analyzed by quantum chemistry calculation. Next, the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the quaternary system of water, ethanol, toluene, and EDOT were obtained and fitted with the NRTL model. Furthermore, the recovery process was simulated and optimized. The results indicate that the recovery ratio of EDOT is higher than 99.8%, and the profit of per ton wastewater is 5756.97 CNY. The proposed process shows great potential for industrial application and cleaner production.

An enzyme-free flexible and wearable sensor based on PEDOT/CNTs/Au for continuous detection of glucose in sweat

Chong Chen,Yufei Liu,Kai Zhang,Qiao Fan,Tingting Luo,Shigui Peng,Lanlan Wei,Yucheng Yin,Min He,Jie Yu

Non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors based on human sweat offer a new detection method that is non-invasive and suitable for continuous monitoring. They overcome limitations of traditional enzyme-based sensors, such as poor stability and strict storage requirements. This study developed a flexible electrochemical sensor using a composite of conductive polymer (P(EDOT-MeOH)), carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for highly sensitive and selective detection of glucose in sweat. COOH-MWCNTs provide a conductive network with high specific surface area. AuNPs enhance the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. The P(EDOT-MeOH) matrix improves the stability of the nanocomposite and effectively suppresses interference from electroactive substances such as uric acid and ascorbic acid in sweat. The sensor was fabricated using an electrodeposition process to layer the composite material onto a flexible screen-printed carbon electrode. This design offers both mechanical durability and wearability. Electrochemical tests showed that the sensor has a wide linear detection range (0.01–1 mM), a low detection limit (4.5 μM), and high selectivity under neutral conditions. The sensor maintained stable performance over 30 days and after 400 bending cycles, demonstrating its potential for wearable applications. During real-time sweat glucose monitoring in exercise conditions, results showed a strong correlation with blood glucose levels (R² = 0.976), confirming clinical applicability. This study provides a new strategy for developing low-cost, highly stable flexible non-enzymatic glucose sensors and supports the advancement of a new generation of wearable health monitoring devices.
