Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a widely used polyester plastic, causes pollution as its resistance to natural degradation. Cost-effective and fast biodegradation of PET waste requires robust engineered enzymes. While Tryptophan 155 (W155) in PET hydrolase (PETase) is crucial for PET interaction, its direct mutagenesis often reduces activity. Previous efforts indirectly modulated W155 via residue 183, but with limited efficacy. Here, we engineered NovaPETase, a synergistic double mutant at residues 155 and 183. The mutant breaks the theoretical constraint of W155 conservation, and at the same time causes its residue 155 shifting from the conventional substrate-restricting C-type conformation to an unrestrictive B-type conformation. Remarkably, NovaPETase achieved 90% degradation of post-consumer bottle-derived PET within just 1.87 hours, reaching near-complete degradation within 2.5 hours. Moreover, it accomplished over 90% degradation of light-colored textile PET waste in only 2.83 hours—representing the first report of an industrial-scale enzymatic process for efficient depolymerization of textile-based PET waste. Furthermore, NovaPETase exhibits broad adaptability to various temperatures, enzyme loadings, and substrate loadings, demonstrating significant potential for reducing operational costs and enhancing efficiency in industrial-scale enzymatic PET waste degradation. In summary, our findings represent a significant advance in understanding and designing industrially applicable polyester hydrolases.

Electrochromic smart devices with tunable optical properties are on the verge of replacing the conventional windows and curtains. The preparation and commercialization of electrochromic materials are majorly based on vapor phase deposition which is limited by high price and difficult production processes. Here, atomizing spray deposition process is developed for the production of large area, low-cost electrochromic film. W 18 O 49 , a promising inorganic EC material, was used to prepare EC film on indium tin oxide-polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) flexible substrate. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) was also printed on ITO-PET substrate to improve the conductivity of substrate and the adhesion between W 18 O 49 and substrate. The experimental results showed that the transmittance modulation ( Δ T) of W 18 O 49 /PEDOT:PSS/ITO-PET flexible EC film was 63.34% corresponding to a wavelength of 633 nm. The coloring and bleaching response times of W 18 O 49 /PEDOT:PSS/ITO-PET EC film were 18.7 s and 23.2 s, respectively. Furthermore, the as-prepared flexible EC film by atomizing spray deposition method had excellent cyclic stability, and the optical transmittance of the film still retains a high value (70%) after continuous coloring and bleaching for 6000 s.

The transformation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into high-value functional materials remains a key challenge for sustainable polymer circularity. Here, we report a sustainable PET-derived zwitterionic gel in which phosphonium-based ionic liquids modulate the network through ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions, while the PET-based polyurethane functions as a structural regulator providing additional hydrogen-bond anchoring. The deep-eutectic betaine/Zn(OAc) 2 solvent serves as an efficient catalyst for PET glycolysis, enabling sustainable conversion of PET into polyurethane precursors. The ionic liquids act as dynamic cross-linking centres that densify chain packing, enhance charge transport, and facilitate stress delocalization throughout the dual network structure. When combined with the PET-PU-derived hydrogen-bond framework and MXene fillers, the gel preserves high conductivity and integrity in the presence of large deformation. The optimized gel exhibits a high toughness (486.9 kJ m −3 ), 856% elongation, ultralow modulus (0.078 MPa), and a high adhesion (245.8 kPa), which is similar to, or even higher than, human skin. The gel can be used as a flexible electronic-skin sensor that has a wide strain range (0–856%), high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 4.24 in the high-strain region), a detection limit of 0.5%, and stability of more than 1000 cycles. This work highlights ionic-liquid-induced dynamic cross-linking as a key mechanism governing mechanical and electrical performance, establishing a sustainable PET upcycling strategy for next-generation soft bioelectronic materials.

The high-value recycling of waste plastic is a key challenge in achieving a circular economy. This study introduces an innovative semi-chemical process for producing recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) materials by copolymerizing post-consumer PET with monomers (ethylene glycol [EG] and terephthalic acid [TPA]) followed by esterification and polycondensation, thus opening a new avenue for the high-value utilisation of rPET that is distinct from conventional physical and chemical recycling approaches. The microstructure and thermal properties of rPET during the semi-chemical process were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR). To evaluate the safety of the final product as a food contact material, the variations in the types and concentrations of volatile, semivolatile and nonvolatile organic compounds in rPET during the semi-chemical process were analysed via headspace gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-GC–MS), gas chromatography-quadrupole tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF/MS) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF/MS). The results indicate that the esterification stage, characterised by the formation of numerous ‘cyclic polyester oligomers’ from oligomers, exhibited the lowest thermal stability. With the progression of subsequent processes (e.g., precondensation), molecular chains grow, resulting in a denser structure and a significant improvement in thermal stability. Ultimately, the rPET and its product obtained via solid-state polycondensation (SSP) possessed a smooth and dense surface, with its thermal stability, melting behaviour and chemical structure being highly consistent with those of virgin PET (vPET). ATR-FTIR analysis further confirmed that the process did not alter the fundamental chemical backbone of PET. Following treatment with esterification and polycondensation reactions, both the residual amounts and the number of species of volatile, semivolatile and nonvolatile substances were effectively controlled. The resulting food-contact rPET material contained only three volatile substances (ethenylbenzene, nonanal, EG), one semivolatile substance (bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate) and one nonvolatile substance (line (TPA-EG) 2 ). This recycling process significantly enhances the safety of rPET, laying a theoretical foundation for its subsequent research and development in food-contact related fields.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ropes are widely used in deep-sea and offshore mooring systems due to their high strength, excellent fatigue resistance and low creep deformation. However, long-term marine service leads to seawater intrusion-induced degradation and mechanical property deterioration, threatening mooring system safety. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a promising protective coating for PET ropes, and the demand for bio-based WPU has substantially increased owing to growing concerns over environmental issues and petroleum shortages. Herein, we report a bio-based WPU coating for PET ropes, synthesized from castor oil and poly (propylene glycol). The coated PET rope exhibits a seawater absorption of only 9.4 wt% after 120 days, significantly lower than the 47.7 wt% of pristine PET rope within 10 min. Moreover, its breaking strength increases to 6413.2 N (17% higher than pristine PET rope), and it can withstand 500 cycles of abrasion and bending tests. This study offers insights into the design and fabrication of bio-based WPU coatings with superior seawater intrusion resistance for marine PET ropes.

The print sample exhibits superior combustion performance over the casted sample. • A linear correlation is observed between combustion temperature and burning rate. • The impulse exhibits a linear correlation with pressure for the printed sample. • Secondary merging mechanism of agglomerates is elucidated. Additive manufacturing (AM) provides a superior alternative to casting for solid propellants, enabling complex geometries alongside safer and more efficient manufacturing. This study compares the thermal decomposition behavior of binder systems for these two different processing methods, as well as combustion properties and aluminum agglomeration of the two different solid propellants. The results indicate significant distinctions between casted and printed samples in terms of combustion and aluminum agglomeration characteristics. Although the combustion temperature, burning rate, and impulse of both samples increase with rising pressure, the values for the printed sample are consistently higher than those of the casted sample. Furthermore, strong linear correlations are observed between the combustion temperature and burning rate of both samples, as well as between the impulse of the printed sample and pressure. Despite differences in the degree of aluminum agglomeration between the two samples, the evolutionary trends of their agglomeration behaviors exhibit high consistency. Under identical pressure, the number of agglomerates detaching from the burning surface is significantly greater for casted sample compared to printed sample. At lower pressures, larger or even irregular agglomerates are prone to form during combustion. The secondary merging location of agglomerates is determined by the competition between aerodynamic force and adhesive force. When aerodynamic force dominates, secondary merging tends to occur in the gas-phase flame zone. However, when adhesive force prevails, secondary merging is more likely to happen on the burning surface. The findings provide scientific support for the application of AM technology in the field of solid propellants. This study compares the combustion characteristics and aluminum agglomeration behavior of solid propellants prepared by additive manufacturing and casting, utilizing a visual online monitoring system. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent emerging contaminant that has attracted increasing attention due to its recalcitrance and toxicity. This study demonstrates the efficacy of a zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) mediated biogas upgrading system for simultaneous PFOA degradation and methane production, with PET microplastics playing a secondary role in the degradation process. At a PFOA dosage of 0.3 mg/L, defluorination efficiencies ranging from 21.22% to 31.98% were achieved after five biogas upgrading cycles (approximately 25 days), accompanied by enhanced CO 2 methanation performance (ultimate CH 4 content >95%). At a PFOA concentration of 10 mg/L, analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) revealed a significant decrease in protein content within the reactors. Molecular docking models and reactive oxygen species (ROS) analyses suggested that the binding of PFOA to specific amino acid residues mitigated its cytotoxicity. The microbial community in the Fe 0 -mediated reactor was dominated by Methanosaeta , a strictly acetoclastic methanogen. Furthermore, metagenomic analysis indicated the upregulation of key genes associated with methanogenesis and fluoride transport under Fe 0 mediation. Characterization of infrared spectrum and fluorinated metabolic intermediates suggested that PFOA degradation proceeded primarily via stepwise decarboxylation pathways. This study not only confirms the roles of Fe 0 and PET microplastics in PFOA removal but also reveals the synergistic metabolic coupling between defluorination and methanogenesis, therby elucidating the mechanisms of Fe 0 -enhanced PFOA degradation.

EcN expressed Is PETase for direct nanoPET biodegradation. • Nanocoating enhanced gastrointestinal tolerance and gut retention of probiotics. • EcNp@PDA-PEI effectively reduced nanoPET uptake. • Engineered probiotics reversed barrier disruption and microbiota dysbiosis. Nanoplastics represent emerging environmental contaminants that pose significant threats to human health. Current research on nanoplastics predominantly focuses on their environmental impact and ex situ degradation. A critical paradigm shift is needed toward developing strategies for their in vivo elimination and therapy. Addressing this gap, a living therapeutic agent based on Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is engineered in this study for charge-enhanced adsorption and remediation of polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics (nanoPET) in the gastrointestinal tract. This engineered probiotic, EcNp@PDA-PEI, is designed to express PET hydrolase for direct nanoPET biodegradation and coated by polydopamine-polyethyleneimine (PDA-PEI) for prolonging gut retention. The EcNp@PDA-PEI effectively reduces nanoPET uptake by Caco-2 cells, thereby alleviating cellular inflammation and gut barrier disruption. In a murine model of nanoPET-induced colitis, the EcNp@PDA-PEI robustly restores gut barrier integrity, mitigates inflammation, and recalibrates the dysregulated gut microbiota. This work presents a proof-of-concept demonstration of repurposing a PET-degradation system from environmental remediation toward preliminary biomedical exploration, providing a foundational basis for further investigations into nanoplastics-associated health risks. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a versatile polymer widely used in firefighting uniforms, engineering plastics, and photovoltaic backplanes, all of which demand high flame retardance. However, achieving a balance between flame retardancy, integrated high mechanical properties, and crystallization capability remains a significant challenge. In this work, we propose an efficient strategy to synthesize inherently flame-retardant, easily crystallizable PET copolyesters with enhanced strength and glass transition temperature ( T g ) by incorporating a phenylphosphorylethyl-benzimidazole-containing monomer (CMP) via chemical copolymerization. With only 5 mol% CMP, the resulting PET-CMP5 copolyester exhibits a significantly improved tensile strength of 67.4 MPa, an elevated T g of 90 °C, a high limiting oxygen index of 33 %, and UL-94 V-0 rating with mitigated dripping behavior. The benzimidazole groups in CMP contribute to a hydrogen-bonding network in PET-CMP copolyester that improves heat resistance and mechanical properties. Simultaneously, the phosphorus-nitrogen synergistic effect in both gas and condensed phases of the CMP unit ensures excellent flame retardance, reduced heat release, and effective melt-dripping suppression. By redesigning the macromolecular chain structure, this work offers a new perspective for developing polymer materials that combine advanced performance with superior fire safety.

It is a significant challenge to endow polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric with functional coating while simultaneously overcoming its poor interfacial bonding strength and functional attenuation in harsh chemical environments; however, to date, no such related work has emerged in the literature. Herein, a new type of surface-modified PET fabric coated with hyperbranched polysiloxane fluorescence (Frs-HBPSi), was fabricated via electron beam (EB) curing methodology. The influence of Frs-HBPSi loading on the comprehensive performance, fluorescence intensity, and heat resistance of PET@EBC-HBPSi was intensively investigated and its fluorescence durability was compared with that of a UV-cured fluorescent fabric (PET@UVC-HBPSi) under identical conditions. The results demonstrate that the EB-cured PET fluorescent material possesses excellent fluorescence intensity and durability under harsh conditions, along with a high curing degree of 96 %. Notably, even after prolonged immersion (4 days) in organic solvents and acidic or basic solutions (2 M), the fluorescent coating remains intact due to the covalent bonding that prevents it from peeling off. Compared to traditional coating, this eco-friendly method produces durable fluorescent fabrics and highlights the potential of combining EB curing with conventional dyeing to create customized multifunctional textiles.

Due to population growth, climate change, and the continued increase in agricultural and industrial demand, freshwater scarcity has become an urgent global challenge that requires immediate attention. Solar interface evaporation technology, as a promising method for sustainable desalination, has garnered significant attention due to its high energy efficiency and environmental compatibility. This paper reports on a cost-effective and scalable solar evaporator based on commercially available polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber sponge with directed capillary channels. First, the PET sponge is modified with a dopamine coating, followed by in situ growth of copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles as a photothermal agent. This simple and efficient preparation process requires no complex equipment and is suitable for large-scale production. The resulting evaporator exhibits broadband solar absorption (95.8 %), excellent hydrophilicity, and a unique “surface-bulk” synergistic photothermal conversion mechanism, which enhances light capture, thermal limitation, and directed water transport. Under 1 sun illumination, the 2D and 3D evaporators achieve evaporation rates of 2.19 and 3.78 kg m −2 h −1 in pure water, respectively, and 2.04 and 3.64 kg m −2 h −1 in 3.5 wt% saline solution, respectively, with a maximum efficiency of 92.8 %. Even under reduced light intensity (0.5 sun), the evaporators maintain competitive performance, achieving evaporation rates of 1.01 kg m −2 h −1 and 2.78 kg m −2 h −1 . This work provides a feasible solution for low-cost, scalable solar evaporators in seawater desalination and broader water purification applications.

The burgeoning field of smart textiles, particularly those with photothermal conversion capabilities, is driven by the escalating need for energy-efficient and versatile thermoregulation solutions across healthcare, energy, and personal protection applications. Despite the promising potential of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g. MoS 2 ), their practical implementation has been hindered by challenges such as aggregation and the lack of a one-step continuous spinning process for the fabrication of high-performance photothermal fibers. This study addresses these gaps by employing in-situ polymerization to integrate MoS 2 with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer, yielding the PET/MoS 2 fibers and fabrics that exhibits excellent photothermal antibacterial properties. The uniform distribution of MoS 2 within the PET matrix not only improves the fiber's mechanical integrity but also significantly enhances its photothermal performance and antibacterial activity under photothermal conditions. The tensile strength of the fabric was observed to increase with the incorporation of MoS 2 up to an optimal loading amount. The photothermal performance was found to be exceptional under various light sources, with a direct correlation to the MoS 2 content. The antibacterial efficacy was notably robust, achieving a 95% reduction in both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) under near-infrared irradiation. This study offers a scalable and efficient solution for advanced wearable thermal management, poised to redefine the future of personal comfort and healthcare technology.
