In this work, an electrochemical sensor based on a highly efficient competitive method is proposed that uses SiO2-PNPG as an adsorbent for the efficient detection of Pb(II) in soil. The silica (SiO2) and N-phenylglycine (NPG) polymer (SiO2-PNPG), synthesized using a one-pot polymer method, was applied to construct specific metal electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity. The high sensitivity and good selectivity were accomplished in the determination of Pb(II) due to the selective penetration and accumulative effect of SiO2-PNPG. The correlation between the current response and the Pb(II) concentration presents a linear range from 2.12 to 15.78 μg mL−1 with a detection limit of 0.166 μg mL−1 (S/N = 3, R2 = 0.9987). The sensitivity, reproducibility and stability of this sensor are promoted due to the facilitated electron transfer.

Water pollution is a worldwide problem that requires urgent attention and prevention and exceeding use of heavy-metal ions is one of the most harmful factors, which poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. In this work, a magnetic oxidized micro/mesoporous carbon (MOMMC) was prepared for the easy separation of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from water. The dual-template method was used to prepare micro/mesoporous carbon using sucrose as the carbon source, silica nanoparticles formed by tetraethyl orthosilicate as the microporous templates, and triblock copolymer F127 as the mesoporous template. MOMMC was obtained by oxidation using potassium persulfate and then magnetized through in situ synthesis of Fe3O4nanoparticles. FTIR, TG-DSC, XRD, TEM, SEM, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, zeta potential, and VSM were used to confirm the synthetic process, structure, and basic properties of MOMMC. The high-saturation magnetization (59.6 emu·g−1) of MOMMC indicated its easy and fast separation from water by an external magnetic field. Kinetics studies showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on MOMMC fit the pseudo-second-order model well. Isotherm studies showed that the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) was better described by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) was better described by both Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson models. MOMMC obtained efficient adsorption for Cu(II) and Pb(II) with the large adsorption capacity of 877.19 and 943.40 mg·g−1according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation, and a better selectivity for Pb(II) was observed in competitive adsorption. MOMMC still possessed a large adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) after three adsorption–desorption cycles. These findings show that MOMMC represents an excellent adsorption material for the efficient removal of heavy-metal ions. Keywords:magnetic mesoporous carbon;adsorption;copper;lead;adsorption kinetics;adsorption isotherms;selectivity

Since lead is teratogenic, carcinogenic and mutagenic, people pay increasing attention to lead contamination in water environment. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor was developed to detect Pb(II) ion in water by PPy , MOFs and bismuth film (BF) modify GCE . Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , contact angleanalyses, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry were used to characterize the BF-PPy/UIO-66-NH 2 /GCE surface, revealing the physical and electrochemical properties of the electrode. MOFs increased the specific surface area and adsorption site of the electrode. The PPy enhanced the conductivity of the composites materials. MOFs and PPy synergistically promoted the electrochemical performance of the electrode. The deposition potential, deposition time , solution pH and Bi (III) concentration were optimized to determine the optimal detection condition. The electrode has a wide linear range (0.5 to 10 μg/L) with a low detection limit (0.05 μg/L). This electrode also has good anti-interference, repeatability and stability. Besides, it has been successfully applied to the detection of actual water samples. The recovery rates ranged from 95.4 % to 102.8 % with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 4.40 %. Our results provide an insight on efficient and rapid detection of Pb(II) ions in water environment in the future.

To address the competitive adsorption of complex wastewater components on organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts), multi-hydroxy containing gemini surfactants varying in alkyl chain length (G 12 , G 14 and G 16 ) are designed and applied for modifying Na-vermiculite (Na-Vt) targeted to the removal of co-existing MB and Pb(II). Organo-Vts exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity and enlarged interlayer spacing compared with Na-Vt, with the saturated modifier dosage reaching as low as 0.4 CEC of Na-Vt. Shorter alkyl chain induces suitable packing density and interlayer environment, endowing G 12 -Vt the highest adsorption capacity towards MB/Pb(II) compared with G 14 -Vt and G 16 -Vt (178.3/63.0 mg/g compared with 143.7/38.1 and 88.6/36.6 mg/g, respectively). Freundlich isotherm and PSO kinetic model are agreeable (the values of R 2 are higher than 0.98) with the endothermic adsorption processes . Notably, a simultaneous effect in binary-component system is obtained, and the maximum adsorption capacities of G 12 -Vt towards MB/Pb(II) reaching 349.9 and 124.5 mg/g, which are 1.96 and 1.95 times higher than single-component system, respectively. Combination of theoretical fitting and molecular simulation co-reveals the adsorption mechanism: the simultaneous effect is due to the providing of additional active sites by the adsorbed MB, which is stronger than that between Pb(II) and the modifier. Existence of π-ion interaction enhances the retention of Pb(II) for a further step. This work broadens a new research perspective for complex wastewater treatment and provides a deep understanding of the stimulative adsorption mechanism between dyes and metal ions .

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two of the most toxic heavy metals, which cause serious pollution to the environment. It is of great significance to develop electrochemical sensing platforms that can be used for the efficient and simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). Herein, bismuth nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Bi@NC) were successfully synthesized. An electrochemical sensor based on Bi@NC was proposed for the high-performance determination of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II). Encapsulated and uniformly distributed Bi nanoparticles with abundant active sites form alloys with Cd(II) and Pb(II), and the conductive nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet accelerates the electron transport rate, thus the electrochemical signals of Cd(II) and Pb(II) are significantly amplified. Under optimized conditions, Cd(II) and Pb(II) can be simultaneously detected in concentrations ranging from 1 to 150 μg L −1 , with sensitivity of 0.48 μA μg −1 L and 0.36 μA μg −1 L, respectively. Meanwhile, the sensor possesses the outstanding advantages of ultra-high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and storage stability, being able to serve as an electrochemical platform for Cd(II) and Pb(II) sensing in fruit and river water.

We report here the preparation process of a recyclable magnetic biochar functionalized with chitosan and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (E-CMBC). This prepared biochar was then evaluated regarding its adsorption performance for Pb(II) from an aqueous solution along with the potential adsorption mechanisms behind this process. XRD and SEM analyses showed that the magnetite particles were successfully embedded into biochar and the subsequent surface coating of chitosan and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid modification were also successful. The effects of the adsorbent dosage, ionic strength, initial solution pH, and contact time, on adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, adsorption thermodynamics and regeneration performance were investigated. The removal of Pb(II) was dramatically improved to 156.68 mg g−1 compared with that by unmodified pristine biochar (10.90 mg g−1) at pH 3.0. In the range of pH 2.0–5.0, the adsorption performance of Pb(II) by E-CMBC remained above 152.50 mg g−1, which suggested that the adsorption capacity of the novel sorbent was not impacted by the competing adsorption of hydrogen cations under acidic conditions. The adsorption process could be well described by the Avrami fractional-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamic analysis proved that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The magnetic strength of E-CMBC was measured as 3.1 emu g−1, suggesting that the consumed E-CMBC could be separated from water by an external magnet. A regeneration study showed that after three cycles of adsorption–desorption, 78.60% of the sorbent was recovered and 97.26% of the adsorption capacity was retained. The adsorption mechanism investigation indicated that Pb(II) adsorption was mainly due to the presence of functional amides and carboxyl groups of E-CMBC forming strong chemical complexation. In conclusion, E-CMBC is a novel, recyclable, and highly efficient adsorbent for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution.

For further the understanding of the adsorption mechanism of heavy metal ions on the surface of protein-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers, a novel protein-derived hybrid nanoflower was prepared to investigate the adsorption behavior and reveal the function of organic and inorganic parts on the surface of nanoflowers in the adsorption process in this study. Silk fibroin (SF)-derived and copper-based protein-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers of SF@Cu-NFs were prepared through self-assembly. The product was characterized and applied to adsorption of heavy metal ion of Pb(II). With Chinese peony flower-like morphology, the prepared SF@Cu-NFs showed ordered three-dimensional structure and exhibited excellent efficiency for Pb(II) removal. On one hand, the adsorption performance of SF@Cu-HNFs for Pb(II) removal was evaluated through systematical thermodynamic and adsorption kinetics investigation. The good fittings of Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models indicated the monolayer adsorption and high capacity of about 2000 mg g−1of Pb(II) on SF@Cu-NFs. Meanwhile, the negative values ofΔrGm(T)θandΔrHmθproved the spontaneous and exothermic process of Pb(II) adsorption. On the other hand, the adsorption mechanism of SF@Cu-HNFs for Pb(II) removal was revealed with respect to its individual organic and inorganic component. Organic SF protein was designated as responsible ‘stamen’ adsorption site for fast adsorption of Pb(II), which was originated from multiple coordinative interaction by numerous amide groups; inorganic Cu3(PO4)2crystal was designated as responsible ‘petal’ adsorption site for slow adsorption of Pb(II), which was restricted from weak coordinative interaction by strong ion bond of Cu(II). With only about 10% weight content, SF protein was proven to play a key factor for SF@Cu-HNFs formation and have a significant effect on Pb(II) treatment. By fabricating SF@Cu-HNFs hybrid nanoflowers derived from SF protein, this work not only successfully provides insights on its adsorption performance and interaction mechanism for Pb(II) removal, but also provides a new idea for the preparation of adsorption materials for heavy metal ions in environmental sewage in the future. Keywords:silk fibroin;hybrid nanoflowers surface;Pb(II) removal;interaction mechanism

We report an efficient, reusable, and selective 6-aminothiouracil (ATA)-modified Zr(IV)-based adsorbent (defined as UiO-66-ATA(Zr)) for lead ion removal in water. The adsorption equilibrium time and the maximum sorption capacity of UiO-66-ATA(Zr) for Pb(II) are, respectively, 120 min and 386.98 mg/g at pH 4 and 298 K. The Pb(II) removal rate reaches 96% at 60 min and exceeds 99% at the equilibrium state in the pH range of 2.0–5.8. Hill and pseudo-second-order models can well describe the sorption process. Pb(II) adsorbing onto UiO-66-ATA(Zr) is an irreversible, favorable chemisorption process with multimolecule participation and film diffusion control. The calculations of density functional theory, the experimental results, and the characterization analyses suggest that the binding mechanisms are the chelation and ion-exchange/electrostatic interactions between hydroxyl/amino/sulfhydryl groups of UiO-66-ATA(Zr) and Pb(II). Besides, UiO-66-ATA(Zr) has a better affinity to Pb(II) than the coexisting ions in water and an excellent repeatability at eight cycles of adsorption. Moreover, the thermodynamic study shows that UiO-66-ATA(Zr) adsorbing Pb(II) is an endothermic reaction. Thus, UiO-66-ATA(Zr) is a prospective sorbent for Pb(II) removal under the initiative of environmental protection and water purification, and this work may also provide an idea for industrial catalysis.

A new adsorbent (MOFs-DHAQ) was prepared by functionalizing UiO-66-NH 2 with 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone to remove Pb(II) from wastewater. The optimum pH, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were studied. MOFs-DHAQ has a good removal rate for Pb(III) at pH 4. It takes only 30 min to reach maximum adsorption capacity about 213.3 mg/g. The experimental data conforms to the pseudo-secondary kinetics and the Freundlich models. The adsorption process belongs to multilayer chemical adsorption . Desorption and adsorption experiments indicate that the adsorbent can be recycled at least four times. The rising temperature favors the adsorption of Pb(II) on MOFs-DHAQ because the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The interaction mechanism between Pb(II) and the reactive group is mainly electrostatic interaction and complexation. MOFs-DHAQ has excellent selectivity for removing Pb(II) from wastewater contains a variety of interfering ions. The calculated adsorption capacity ( Q ex ) of Pb(II) for column adsorption was 108.04 mg/g and was consistent with the Thomas model's adsorption capacity( Q Th ) about 109.63mg/g. Density functional theory calculations show that MOFs-DHAQ combines with Pb(II) through monodentate N atoms and bidentate O groups. MOFs-DHAQ has good application prospect in the removal of lead from wastewater.

This study describes the preparation of an aerogel adsorbent based on nanofibrillated cellulose(NFC) and polyethyleneimine(PEI) via electrostatic combination without chemical crosslinking. Purely physical crosslinking between NFC and PEI was confirmed by attenuated total refraction-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The NFC/PEI hybrid aerogels exhibited good structural stability and shape recovery in water. Absorption experiment shows that the hybrid aerogels are excellent adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions owing to the highly porous structure and the existence of plenty of amine groups. Thermodynamic and kinetic study showed pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir model ( R 2 > 0.999) as the best fit. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) according to Langmuir model was 175.44 mg/g and 357.44 mg/g, respectively. Besides, the Cu(II) or Pb(II) loaded NFC/PEI aerogel could be easily regenerated by EDTA and retain the adsorption capacity after repeatedly using. This environmentally friendly hybrid aerogels with high-performance are promising candidates for sewage disposal and metal pollution treatment.

Novel ternary nanohybrids, consisting of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), graphene oxide (GO) and manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (TEPA-GO/MnFe 2 O 4 ), were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and utilized to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solution effectively. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, zeta potential analysis, magnetization hysteresis loop, BET and XPS. These nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetic behavior as well as high removal efficiency for Pb(II). Moreover, numerous amino groups of the functionalized pendant TEPA on GO coupled with the porous structure of TEPA-GO/MnFe 2 O 4 contribute to high Pb(II) adsorption capacity. The maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of TEPA-GO/MnFe 2 O 4 was determined to be 263.2 mg/g at the optimized solution pH of 5.5, much higher than that of GO/MnFe 2 O 4 (133.3 mg/g) and GO (196.1 mg/g). The kinetics and isotherm data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption of TEPA-GO/MnFe 2 O 4 was a endothermic and spontaneous process. The experimental results corroborated that TEPA-GO/MnFe 2 O 4 can be efficaciously reused after washed with HCl, indicative of its potential applications in environmental cleanup.

Graphene has a great potential in environmental remediation due to its unique physical and chemical properties. However, the relationships between synthetic conditions and contaminant removal are still unclear. In this study, a biogenic method was used for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) using green tea extract and the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) produced was subsequently used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Hence, the impact of bioreduction synthetic conditions of RGO on Pb(II) removal efficiency was examined. The new findings included (1) that reduction of GO by green tea (GT) extract at a ratio of 2:1 (GO:GT), 80 °C and pH 8, led to a RGO material capable of removing 97.2% of a 10 mg·L −1 Pb(II) solution under the adsorption conditions of pH 4.5 and a RGO dose of 0.4 g·L −1 at 30 °C; (2) characterization results showed good dispersion of RGO, and removal of oxygen functional groups from GO, increased Pb(II) adsorption. Pb(II) removal efficiency was largely dependent on reduction conditions during synthesis of RGO; where efficient removal of oxygen-containing groups during reduction favored Pb(II) removal. Furthermore, during biogenic synthesis RGO was also capped by biomolecules such as polyphenols which decreased aggregation leading to enhanced Pb(II) removal efficiency.
