Novel EDTA-chitosan/alginate porous composite beads for the removal of Pb(II) and methylene blue from aqueous solutions

Xueling Liu,Wenjie Ren,Weilin Song,Wanqiang Zhang,Yuhan Wang,Yi Wang,Guozhi Fan,Lei Zhang,Yanjun Huang

Wastewater containing heavy metals and organic dye pollutants discharged into receiving waters poses a serious environmental concern. Herein, a novel EDTA-chitosan/alginate porous composite bead adsorbent (EC–AB) was reported for the simultaneous removal of lead (Pb(II)) and methyl blue (MB) complexes from wastewater. Characterization results showed that EC–AB contained plenty of oxygen/nitrogen functional groups. The effect of CaCO3 addition, pH of the initial solution, contact time, initial pollutant concentration, and ionic strength on EC–AB pollutant removal performance and the adsorption mechanism were systematically analyzed. These findings indicated that EC–AB exhibited high removal efficiency over a wide pH range and at high ionic strength. The maximum adsorption capacities of EC–AB for Pb(II) and MB were 504.11 mg g−1 and 660.76 mg g−1, respectively, at 298 K. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm. A possible adsorption mechanism involving electrostatic attraction, chelation, ion exchange, H-bonding and synergistic effects was proposed. Moreover, EC–AB showed superior stability and reusability, with removal efficiencies of 76.64% for Pb(II) and 80.29% for MB after five continuous adsorption–desorption cycles for treating complex wastewater. In summary, this work provides a beneficial strategy for designing high-performance adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater.

Interfacial growth of nitrogen-doped carbon with multi-functional groups on the MoS2 skeleton for efficient Pb(II) removal

Hanna Pei,Jing Wang,Qingfeng Yang,Weixia Yang,Na Hu,Yourui Suo,Daohong Zhang,Zhonghong Li,Jianlong Wang

Lead(II) is a highly toxic upon accumulation in the human body and a thorough cleanup of this pollutant in water resources has become a rising worldwide concern. In this study, multi-functional nitrogen-doped carbon-MoS 2 (NC-MoS 2 ) nanohybrid composite was successfully synthesized by a step-by-step approach and applied as an effective heavy metal ions adsorbent. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer analysis presents multilayer irregular nanosheets and reveals the uniform distribution of C, N and O elements in the fabricated nanomaterials , respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the functionalization of oxygen-containing functional groups arising from the nitrogen-doped carbon. Particularly, the NC-MoS 2 possesses an excellent adsorption capacity (439.09   mg   g −1 ) for Pb(II), which attributes to the integrated physicochemical adsorption resulting from the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of nanohybrid composites. The as-prepared NC-MoS 2 exhibits good chemical stability and can be reused 7 times with a slight fading over 80% during cycling, which is essential for its practical applications. All of these demonstrate that NC-MoS 2 can be an efficient material for selectively removal of Pb(II), which suggest its great potential in the utilization of environmental cleanup .

EDTA-modified hydroxyl-functionalized covalent organic frameworks for enhanced Pb(II) removal from complex wastewater: adsorption mechanism and performance

Wenqiang Wang,Guanghui Zhang,Lihua Dong,Ping Gu

Heavy metals frequently coexist with organic ligands in water as heavy metal complexes, which are difficult to remove routinely. In this study, a novel EDTA-based covalent organic framework (COF-EDTA) was synthesized at room temperature through the incorporation of EDTA into a hydroxyl-functionalized COF (COF-OH) for enhanced removal of both free Pb(II) and Pb(II)-citrate complexes. Structural and compositional properties of the materials were analyzed via PXRD, FTIR, and 13 C NMR, while surface morphology, elemental distribution, specific surface area, and thermal stability were examined by TEM, SEM-EDS, BET, and TGA, respectively. Pb(II) adsorption experiments were subsequently performed to assess removal efficiency. In the single Pb(II) system, EDTA modification significantly improved the adsorption performance, with the equilibrium adsorption amount increasing from 38.51 mg/g (COF-OH) to 135.6 mg/g (COF-EDTA), an increase of approximately 252%. COF-OH adsorbed Pb(II) via coordinate and hydrogen bonding, while the significant adsorption of Pb(II) by COF-EDTA was attributed to chelation and ion exchange. In the Pb(II)-citrate binary system, COF-EDTA preferentially adsorbed free Pb 2+ at a citrate-to-Pb(II) molar ratio of 0.5:1. When Pb-Citrate − is the dominant species (> 93%), COF-EDTA enhanced removal of Pb(II) through ligand displacement (primary pathway, ~75% efficiency) coupled with intact adsorption of Pb-Citrate − complexes (secondary pathway, ~25%). The DFT calculation validated the feasibility of ligand displacement mediated Pb(II) capture by COF-EDTA, while COF-OH lacked this capability. This work provides critical guidelines for exploring novel adsorbents to enhance the removal of heavy metal complexes.

Adsorption of Pb(II) cation from aqueous solutions by acid modified low-rank coal: An experimental study and simulation

Wang Penghui,Liu Wenli,Xu Hongxiang,Liu Guowei

An acid modified approach to enhance the adsorption capacity of low-rank coal (lignite) is proposed to reduce the risk of heavy metal ions within the wastewater. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, adsorption coefficient and density functional theory DFT calculations were studied in this paper, respectively. The results indicate that the adsorption capacity of lignite was enlarged after HNO 3 modification, and pseudo-second order kinetics model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model can be used to describe the adsorption process. The surface chemical properties of lignite play a dominant role rather than the specific surface area and total pore volume in the Pb(II) cation adsorption process, and it is suggested that the adsorption of Pb(II) cation by raw lignite (RL) and modified lignite (ML) is mainly completed by chemical adsorption. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization showed that the surface oxygen functional groups of lignite increased after modification. The results of interaction energies between the model molecule and Pb(II) cation show that Pb(II) cation and -C-O-C are most easily combined, followed by -COOH, and -C = O is the weakest. The adsorption mechanisms of raw and modified lignite and Pb(II) cation were summarized. The original hemidirected structure of Pb(II) cation is broken, and a polar covalent bond is formed. A large number of flocculent precipitates were generated rapidly with the chelating reaction between humic acid molecules and Pb(II) cation. The adsorption of Pb(II) cation by lignite was a chemical adsorption process.

Water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (WSCC)-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) provide efficient adsorption of Pb(II) from water

Jinling Gao,Mingzhe Song,Tongtong Li,Yuyao Zhao,Anxu Wang

Nanocomposites play a key role in the removal of toxic metal(loid)s from environmental water. In this study, we investigated the adsorption capability of water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (WSCC)-modified functionally oxidized single walled carbon nanotubes (oSWCNTs) for rapid and efficient removal of toxic Pb(II) from water. The WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite was prepared by an acid treatment of SWCNTs followed by an ultrasonic dispersion process using WSCC as dispersant. The morphology and chemical characteristics of the WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite were further identified using various characterization techniques (i.e., transmission electron microscopy, TEM; scanning electron microscopy, SEM; Raman spectra; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS; nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm test). The efficiency of the adsorption process in batch experiments was investigated via determining various factor effects (i.e. WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite concentration, solution pH, initial Pb(II) concentration, contact time, and reaction temperature). Kinetic results showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order, while an isotherm results study showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models at the same time. In addition, the van't Hoff equation was used to calculate thermodynamic parameters for assessing the endothermic properties and spontaneity of the adsorption process. The WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite manifested a high adsorption capacity for Pb(II) (113.63 mg g−1) via electrostatic interactions and ion-exchange, as its adsorption rate could reach up to 98.72%. This study, therefore, provides a novel adsorbent for the removal and detection of harmful residues (i.e. toxic metal(loid)s) from environmental water, such as industry wastewater treatment and chemical waste management.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of Pb(II) and complex Cu(II) species by biowaste-derived char with amino functionalization

Yuanli Liu,Jiang Xu,Zhen Cao,Ruiqi Fu,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Xinhua Xu

This work aimed to develop a feasible technology to reuse dead pig biowaste for heavy metals removal , which was first carbonized into pig bone char (PBC) after pyrolysis and further functionalized with amino ( NH 2 ) to improve its affinity with heavy metals. The application of PBC after NH 2 -functionalization for aqueous heavy metals removal was explored, including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and different complex Cu(II) species. PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 showed comparable performance with AC@SiO 2 -NH 2 . The adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was 120 and 30 mg g −1 , respectively. The NH 2 functionalization enhanced the adsorption of complex Cu(II) species, and PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 exhibited good performance under a wide pH range and coexisting ions. The adsorption of Cu(II) EDTA species with an EDTA/Cu(II) molar ratio of 1.0 by PBC would be enhanced ~3 times and ~6 times after NH 2 functionalization and further addition of Fe 3+ , respectively. The results of EDX , elemental mapping, and XPS confirmed the adsorption of Cu(II) species. The adsorption kinetics , isotherm, and thermodynamics of different Cu(II) species by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 were investigated. The regeneration of PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was easily performed via acidic wash. These results suggested the application potential of the reuse of biowaste, which could be a promising adsorbent for aqueous heavy metals after specific functionalization.

Environmentally friendly fabrication of new β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO2 nanocomposite for simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and BPA from water

Muhammad Usman,Adeel Ahmed,Zhijian Ji,Bing Yu,Youqing Shen,Hailin Cong

Heavy metals and endocrine disrupters often co-exist in wastewater, while their possible competition behaviours make uptake removal more challenging. Therefore, β-Cyclodextrin based nanocomposite adsorbent was successfully fabricated (β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 ) for the simultaneous uptake of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A from wastewater. FTIR, XRD , and XPS confirmed the successful fabrication of the β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 nanocomposite. In this setting, oxygen-containing groups are primarily responsible for the Pb(II) binding, while the β-Cyclodextrin cavities adsorb Bisphenol A through host-guest interaction, enabling the simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A. In the mono contaminant system, the nanocomposite displayed prominent removal ability toward Pb(II) and Bisphenol A with adsorption characteristics of pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities were identified for Pb(II) and Bisphenol A to be 274.4 mg/g and 174.9 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. Most importantly, the β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 could efficiently attain simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A by avoiding their competitive behaviours was due to the different adsorption mechanisms (electrostatic interaction and host-guest interaction). Moreover, the adsorbed Pb(II) and Bisphenol A could be successfully recovered with a slight decline in nanocomposite removal performance even after 4 cycles in the binary-component system. All these findings provide insights into the fabrication of highly effective adsorbent with separated adsorption sites to treat wastewater bearing heavy metal and endocrine disrupters.

High-sensitivity determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on a glassy carbon electrode modified with polypyrrole/sepiolite nanofibers

Pan Yan,Dong Yong-Ping,Chu Xiang-Feng,Ding Hou-Cheng

Polypyrrole-sepiolite ( PPy/SPL ) nanofibers were prepared by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization in the presence of sepiolite. A PPy/SPL composite modified glassy carbon electrode ( PPy/SPL/GCE ) was prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry for the simultaneous determination of trace Pb(II) and Cd(II) was carried out at the PPy/SPL/GCE. Operational parameters such as the deposition potential and time, the amount of modified suspension, and the pH values were optimized for the purpose of determination of trace metal ions in 0.10 M acetate buffer solution. Under the optimal conditions, the stripping peak currents showed good linear relationships with Pb(II) and Cd(II) at concentration ranges of 5.0 × 10 –9 ‒1.2 × 10 –6 M and 5.0 × 10 –9 ‒1.2 × 10 –7 M, and the detection limits were 1.2 and 1.5 nM, respectively. The proposed method is applicable to the simultaneous determination of trace Pb(II) and Cd(II) in real water samples with the relative standard deviations of less than 4.4% and the recovery rates of 97.9‒102.2%.

A novel magnetic loading porous liquid absorbent for removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from the aqueous solution

Ruilu Yang,Qi Zhang,Jian Shi,Yaping Zheng,Dechao Wang,Jian Zhang,Siyuan Liu,Zhuting Fu

The first example of a magnetic loading functional porous liquid (PL) by employing hollow silicon dioxide (HS) loaded with Fe 3 O 4 as the porous guest, (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (KH560) and polyetheramine M2070 as hindered sterically solvents was demonstrated in this paper. This nanoadsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL) was prepared for the decontamination of aqueous solutions from Cu(II) and Pb(II) heavy metals. The hindered sterically solvents ( i.e. , the flexible oligomer chains) endow the Fe 3 O 4 @HS porous guest with a superior flowing behavior at ambient temperature. Various approaches were applied to confirm the morphology, structure and properties of the resultant Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL. More significantly, the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution by Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL was studied in detail. As expected, combined with the cavity structure from porous guest and amine groups from flexible organic flow layer, Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 322.58 and 357.14 mg·g −1 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively, at 298 K, pH 8 and initial concentration of 20 mg·L -1 . The obtained HS and Fe 3 O 4 in Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL magnetic nanoadsorbent presented average particles size ascertained to be ca. 200 nm and 30 nm, respectively. Moreover, the Freundlich model and pseudo-first-order model has described the adsorption process and adsorption kinetics . The parameters in thermodynamic experiment signified the spontaneity and endothermic properties of the adsorption. Moreover, magnetic loading endowed the Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL with a superior regeneration performance. A variety of mechanisms containing coordination interaction, porous guest absorption, electrostatic interaction , steric effect and entropy are simultaneously realized in this novel adsorption system. Therefore, the introduction of PLs adsorbents into heavy metal adsorption systems through the construction of PLs materials by magnetic loading and surface amination is of great significance in the field of heavy metal adsorption, eventually starting a new time of pushing forward the development of novel adsorbents for decontamination of aqueous solutions from heavy metal ions.

Fabricating hydroxyapatite functionalized biochar composite using steel slag and Hami melon peel for Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Lingmin Sun,Junshu Wu,Jinshu Wang,Meng Xu,Wenyuan Zhou,Yucheng Du,Yongli Li,Hongyi Li

With rising global concerns about the discharge of large volumes of waste materials derived from industrial manufacture and human life, methods for utilizing waste materials have been greatly developed. In this study, an ingenious hydroxyapatite (Hap) functionalized hierarchical porous biochar (HB) composite is fabricated using a filtrate rich in Ca 2+ ions after steel slag reuse and spent Hami melon peel as raw materials. Microstructural analyses indicate that Hap nanoparticles are loaded on HB with hierarchical pores produced from a pyrolysis process of Hami melon peel. A series of HB-Hap materials by tuning HB addition amount (0.5, 1, and 2 g) can be obtained through a coprecipitation process. As a case study, HB-0.5Hap exhibits high specific surface area of 66.92 m 2 /g and high-efficiency removal performance for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacities of HB-0.5Hap are 134.4 (Pb(II)) and 60.4 (Cd(II)) mg/g, which are 1.77 and 1.23 times higher than that of pure HB, respectively. It is attributed to a synergistic mechanism involving ion exchange, chemical precipitation , surface complexation, and cation-π interaction. According to a semi-quantitative calculation, ion exchange plays a major role in the removal of Pb(II) (78.61%, the relative contribution of ion exchange mechanism) and Cd(II) (77.77%). This study demonstrates a facile, economical, and sustainable strategy for the value-added utilization of steel slag and spent Hami melon peel, which can be critical in solving environmental problems.

Bismuth nanoparticles decorated vertically arranged graphene as flexible electrodes for highly efficient detection of Pb(II) ions in water

Lin He,Chunwen Chang,Qiang Xue,Xizhou Zhong,Xin Zhao,Yao Liu,Zeyu Liu,Xianbo Ding

Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition   (PECVD) system was used to prepare a vertically arranged graphene (VG) thin-film materials. Bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) of different sizes were loaded on VG films by physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique to obtain a BiNPs decorated VG screen-printed electrodes (BiNPs/VG-SPEs) with high sensitivity. The morphology and electrochemical properties of VG-SPE and three BiNPs/VG-SPEs with different sizes of BiNPs were studied by various interface characterization and electrochemical measurements. Compared with pristine VG-SPEs, BiNPs/VG-SPEs demonstrated better electrochemical performance. The electrode with smaller size of BiNPs has the larger electrochemical active area and higher electron transfer efficiency, achieving better electrochemical response to Pb(II) ions. Therefore, VG-SPE with smallest size of BiNPs (4.6 ± 0.5 nm) was utilized to detect Pb(II) ions in aqueous solution. Under the optimized conditions, BiNPs/VG-SPE showed a broader linear concentration range (5–200 μg/L) with a low detection limit (0.15 μg/L). This sensor was also successfully applied for detection of Pb(II) ions in groundwater and tap water. Recovery rates ranged from 96.2 to107.2 % with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6.8 %. It also has good anti-interference and repeatability. Our results provide a promising sensor technique for efficient and rapid in situ monitoring of Pb(II) ions in aquatic environments.

Evaluation of the performance of porous PBAT/modified zeolite composite materials for adsorption of Pb(II) ions from wastewater

Xiao Zhan,Junzhuo Sun,Daohai Zhang

This study is aiming to prepare the porous PBAT/modified zeolite composite by the simple, rapid, and efficient method of preparing them by the solution coating process with modified zeolite as adsorbent, as well as with PBAT as carrying agents and with ethanol as porogenic agent. Some influencing factors for adsorbing PBAT/modified zeolite composite membrane in Lead-Ion-Heavy Metal wastewater were researched in this paper, including the effects of zeolite content, modifier type, initial pH, pore-making agent, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, initial concentration, and feeding quantity. In addition, the adsorption processes of the porous PBAT/modified zeolite composite membrane are studied by means of the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models. The finding shows the kinetic data were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, and the data fitting of isothermal adsorption experiment is closer to the Langmuir adsorption model, which is a single-molecule adsorption process and belongs to chemisorption, with a saturation adsorption amount of about 106.3 mg/g. Therefore, zeolite has great prospects for the removal of Pb(II) in wastewater, and provides a theoretical basis for the efficient treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. Highlights A composite film that can effectively remove Pb(II) from water was prepared. The composite exhibits rational pore structure and high specific surface area. This composite has advantages of biodegradability and reproducibility.
