In this work, the TiO 2 -RGO/LDHs photocatalyst was synthesized by a hydrothermal method using GO/LDHs as substrates. The structure and property of prepared materials were characterized via XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS, TEM, UV–vis spectroscopy, etc. Toluene, methanol, and ethyl acetate were selected as typical volatile organic pollutants model pollutants to examine the photocatalytic degradation effect of TiO 2 -RGO/LDHs. The photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO 2 -RGO/LDHs system was further investigated in contaminated air (NOx = 20 ppm). The results indicated that the prepared TiO 2 -RGO/LDHs nanocomposite possess better photodegradation activity than pure TiO 2 and TiO 2 -RGO samples, and the photocatalyst has excellent application for the elimination of three kinds of VOCs. The photochemical and materials characterization revealed that the graphene has enlarged the light response range and inhibited the recombination of electron-hole pairs of TiO 2 . Meanwhile, LDHs can offer more hydroxide ions to accelerate the oxidation reaction, resulting in more radicals and better pollutants degradation.

Hydrogen (H 2 ) sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are promising for many applications such as a rocket propellant, industrial gas and the safety of storage. However, poor selectivity at low analyte concentrations, and independent response on high humidity limit the practical applications. Herein, we designed rGO-wrapped SnO 2 –Pd porous hollow spheres composite (SnO 2 –Pd@rGO) for high performance H 2 sensor. The porous hollow structure was from the carbon sphere template. The rGO wrapping was via self-assembly of GO on SnO 2 -based spheres with subsequent thermal reduction in H 2 ambient. This sensor exhibited excellently selective H 2 sensing performances at 390 °C, linear response over a broad concentration range (0.1–1000 ppm) with recovery time of only 3 s, a high response of ∼8 to 0.1 ppm H 2 in a minute, and acceptable stability under high humidity conditions (e. g. 80%). The calculated detection limit of 16.5 ppb opened up the possibility of trace H 2 monitoring. Furthermore, this sensor demonstrated certain response to H 2 at the minimum concentration of 50 ppm at 130 °C. These performances mainly benefited from the special hollow porous structure with abundant heterojunctions , the catalysis of the doped-PdO x , the relative hydrophobic surface from rGO, and the deoxygenation after H 2 reduction.

Recently, the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles and associated hybrids using plant extracts has attracted much attention due to its low cost, simplicity and environmental friendliness . However, the exact formation mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the one step green synthesis of hybrid rGO/Fe NPs by a tea extract was examined using a response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain a high activity of rGO/Fe NPs. The results showed that the best conditions for synthesis were an extract concentration = 35 g/L, pH = 7, and temperature = 30 °C. The optimized hybrid produced could remove 99.9% of mitoxantrone (MTX) compared to only 78.9% when unoptimized. To better understand the formation process, characterizations by SEM , TEM, AFM , FTIR, XRD , Raman, and XPS were performed. Theses characterizations showed that the Fe NPs produced had a particle size of 25 nm which were deposited randomly across the rGO nanosheet with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm, indicating that stable hybrid rGO/Fe NPs were successfully synthesized, where the green tea extract exhibited both reducing and capping/stabilizing behavior. Furthermore, the specific biomolecules in the green tea extract responsible for bio-reduction and stabilization were identified by GC-MS and LC-MS, which showed that catechins were the main reducing agents, while alkaloids, amino acids and phenolic acids were the main capping/stabilizing agents. Finally, a mechanism for synthesizing rGO/Fe NPs was proposed, where the polyphenols successfully reduced GO and complexed with iron ions to form amorphous ferric (and ferrous) polyphenol complex nanoparticles.

Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors may exhibit excellent sensing performances to be applied in wearable electronics, medical diagnosis, and electronic skin. Herein, we report a multi-layer and phased-responsive reduced graphene oxide/MXene-based piezoresistive pressure sensor with hierarchical microspines constructed by sandpaper as the template. Thanks to the multi-level and multi-layer structure, the obtained sensor realized phased response and showed wide detection range (up to 70 kPa), fast response (response/recovery time of 40/80 ms), and excellent working stability (1000 fatigue cycles). Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied for detecting various human motions including pulse beats, cheek bulging, nodding, finger bending, speech recognition, handwriting, and other pressure signals. Besides, a 6 × 6 sensing matrix integrated by the sensors was able to sensitively perceive the distribution of plane pressure. The findings in this work conceivably stand out as a new strategy to fabricate high-performance piezoresistive pressure sensors in the fields of intelligent healthcare and medical diagnosis, wearable electronic devices, electronic skin, and human–machine interaction.

Protein molecules tend to be adsorbed on the surfaces of nanoparticles, thereby easily forming nanoparticle protein corona (NPC). Herein, the foundational study of NPC formation of human serum albumin (HSA) absorbed on the surfaces of reduced graphene oxide sliver nanocomposites (rGO-AgNCs) was studied using UV–visible, fluorescence, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. When the rGO-AgNCs were added to the HSA solution, the adsorption spectra of HSA showed a slight blue shift, which indicated the formation of NPC. The fluorescence data revealed that the static quenching procedure was the main quenching mechanism. Also, Δ G θ < 0 indicated that the absorption process was spontaneous in thermodynamics, and HSA tends to bind to the surfaces of the rGO-AgNCs. Furthermore, Δ H θ < 0 and Δ S θ < 0 suggested that the binding was an enthalpy-driven process, and the main forces were the van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds. The results of the synchronous fluorescence, three-dimensional emission experiments, and the α -helix content decrement indicated that the rGO-AgNCs slightly altered the HSA conformation. The morphological investigation and analysis using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) demonstrated that the NPC was formed on the surfaces of rGO-AgNCs.

Enhancing the specific capacitance and rate performance of graphene based fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSCs) is critical to achieving advanced energy storage devices with desired performance. Here, hierarchically porous reduced graphene oxide/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (rGO/PEDOT:PSS) hybrid fiber was constructed by co-assembling confined growth and acid treatment strategy. The rationally designed hybrid fiber addressed the issues of excellent conductivity and abundant porous channels for fast electrons transfer and rapid ions diffusion. As indicated, highly-oxidized small-sized GO precursor was utilized to endow rGO fiber with abundant ions diffusion channels and ions adsorption interfaces for double-layer capacitance, as well as ample oxygen functional groups for additional pseudocapacitance . The incorporation of acid-treated PEDOT:PSS also prevents the stacking of rGO sheets, improves the electrical conductivity and provides partial capacitance. Attributed to the synergy, the obtained hybrid fiber exhibits remarkably improved performance in FSSC with volumetric/areal specific capacitance of 226.5 F cm −3 /279.3 mF cm −2 at 0.5 A cm −3 and rate performance of 74.7% capacitance retention at 50 A cm −3 , which is much superior to the counterpart of previously-reported FSSC devices. Meanwhile, the resultant FSSC device also exhibits superb electrochemical stability (91%, 10000 cycles), holding a great application prospect in wearable electronics .

Hydrogen (H2) sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) have attracted considerable attention for safety concerns of traditional industries and energy storing devices. ZnO has been widely studied as an n-type MOS in H2 sensing due to the excellent stability, mobile conductive carriers, and wide bandgap. However, the poor selectivity and high working temperature limit its practical applications. Herein, we designed a heterostructure based on ZIF-8-derived ZnO by rGO functionalization to boost the selective H2 sensing. This composite demonstrated dramatic H2 selectivity against other flammable gases, particularly ethanol, which was improved by deoxygenation to reduce the surface oxygen functional groups. This sample showed excellent H2 sensing with a high response of ∼18 to 200 ppm H2, and a response/recovery time of 50/7 s at 400 °C. Even at a certain low temperature of 200 °C, the composite showed evident response to H2. The excellent gas sensing behavior could be attributed to the heterojunctions and enhanced electron mobility. Regulation of the surface oxygen-containing functional groups opens up a promising approach to adjust the gas sensing selectivity of MOS-based materials.

Nowadays, there is an urgent need for microwave absorbing materials with light weight, thin thickness, and strong absorbing ability to solve the problem of electromagnetic radiation. In this study, we report a novel high-performance aerogel absorber by growing MoO 3 -doped WO 3 nanoflakes on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. The resultant rGO-Mo-WO 3 aerogel displays a low density (∼75 mg/cm 3 ) and unique hierarchical architectures including 3D porous microstructures, 2D rGO skeleton, and binary transition metal oxide of Mo-WO 3 nanoflakes, thus leading to excellent microwave absorption performances . Typically, rGO-Mo-WO 3 aerogel exhibits an ultra-strong reflection loss (RL) of −61.8 dB with a thin coating thickness of 1.54 mm. And a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 6.24 GHz can be achieved at a low filler loading of 8 wt%, much superior to previous ones. The synergistic effect of moderate polarization relaxation loss and weak conduction loss together with the porous microstructure for the aerogel result in the suitable impedance matching and strong microwave attenuation ability. This work may demonstrate a promising method to fabricate hierarchically nanostructured absorbers with the advantages of light weight, ultra-strong microwave absorption, and thin coating thickness.

Radioactive pollution is extremely harmful to humans and the environment and is difficult to manage. Therefore, finding an economical and efficient adsorbent for the treatment of uranium-contaminated wastewater is urgent. A composite carbon aerogel (CNQDs/rGO) was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method by using CNQDs and graphene oxide as monomers. The ZIF-67 crystal was directly deposited on the template (expressed as CNQDs/rGO/ZIF-67 carbon aerogel (CGZCA)). The combination of CNQDs and graphene can not only graft some target groups (–OH, –COOH, and –NH-) onto the surface of 3D graphene carbon aerogels to promote adsorption, but also transform the zeta potential of rGO/ZIF-67 from positive to negative, which is more conducive to the adsorption process. The material observed by SEM and TEM shows that ZIF-67 and CNQDs are distributed on the carbon aerogel. The relationship of the adsorption of CGZCA to UO 2 2+ with contact time and initial concentration is examined. Results show that the adsorption of UO 2 2+ follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2 = 0.999), and is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (R 2 = 0.991). The adsorption mechanism of the prepared adsorbent to UO 2 2+ is studied by XPS. Various parameters are studied in detail in the static adsorption experiment, and the removal of uranyl by adsorbents in different water bodies is simulated. In addition, dynamic adsorption behavior and adsorption effect of CGZCA on UO 2 2+ are investigated, which provides an appropriate reference basis for practical applications. Results show that the prepared ternary composite carbon aerogel is expected to be used in the extraction of uranium in wastewater and large-scale industrial production applications.

A highly stable acetylcholinesterase (AChE) sensor based on titanium oxide nanorods (TiO 2 -NRs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for detecting dichlorvos (DDVP) is successfully developed. The sensor adopts a layer-by-layer assembly method to sequentially assemble chitosan (CS)-modified reduced graphene oxide (denoted CS&rGO), gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs), TiO 2 -NRs, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The catalytic activity, impedance characteristics, material effects, the relationship between the inhibition rate of the sensor and the dichlorvos (DDVP) concentration, interference studies, real sample detection, and storage stability of the sensor were all evaluated using electrochemical characterization. The sensor’s response to DDVP ranged from 2.26 nM to 565 nM, with a limit of detection of 2.23 nM, and it displayed good repeatability, selectivity, and storage stability.

A novel porous carbon derived from glucose and dicyandiamide incorporated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared for CO 2 capture and supercapacitors . In this synthesis, one-pot hydrothermal and KOH activation were employed to obtain reducing graphene oxide/N-doped porous carbon (rGO/NPC) composites. Among the rGO/NPC composites derived, the sorbent rGO/NPC-600-2-1 (1 represents the addition amount of graphene oxide is 1% of the total mass of glucose and dicyandiamide, 2 represents the mass ratio of potassium hydroxide to the precursor of carbon composite material is 2 and 600 means activation temperature is 600 °C) had a large surface area of 865.1 m 2 g −1 , a rich nitrogen doping amount of 7.07 wt%, and a high CO 2 capture ability of 5.77 mmol/g at 298 K. Additionally, the as-synthesized rGO/NPC-600-2-1 was used as a supercapacitor electrode, providing a specific capacitance 210.8 F g −1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte under ambient conditions and excellent charge and discharge long cycle stability (circa 100% capacitance retention at a current density of 10 A g −1 after 10000 cycles). Even at a high current density of 20 A g −1 , a capacity of 141.1 F g -1 is still maintained. The results above suggested that the rGO/NPC composites are applicable candidates for both electrochemical energy storage and CO 2 capture.

Indium oxide (In2O3)-based photocatalysts have great potential in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Nevertheless, their photocatalytic activity is inhibited by rapid electron–hole recombination. Hence, a novel Z-scheme ternary hierarchical ZnFe2O4/RGO/In2O3 photocatalyst is fabricated for photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO and CH4. The CO production rate reaches up to 35.4 μmol g−1 under 4 h of illumination using a 20ZFO/10RGO/IO catalyst, which is 3.9 times and 9.8 times higher than those using bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4, respectively. The CH4 production rate is 7.8 μmol g−1, which is 4.3 fold and 2.4 fold higher, respectively, compared to those from bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4. The enhancement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction was ascribed to a Z-scheme mechanism of the hierarchical catalysts by introducing RGO in-between In2O3 and ZnFe2O4 to promote charge separation and realize efficient utilization of the high-energy electrons and holes. The oxygen-defect of ZnFe2O4 also facilitates the adsorption and activation of CO2. This work provides new insights to design ternary In2O3-based hierarchical photocatalysts with a rational Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism to improve the CO2 conversion efficiency.
