Although silicon (Si) has a high theoretical capacity, the large volume expansion during lithiation has greatly hindered its application in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the strategies for improving the performance of Si anode, the role of binders should not be underestimated. Here, a novel strategy for designing a cross-linkable binder for Si anode has been proposed. The binder with hydroxyl and nitrile groups can be in situ covalently cross-linked through the amide group in the batteries. The cross-linked binder (c-POAH) shows high elasticity and strong adhesion to Si particles and the current collector. Si||Li half coin cells using the c-POAH binder have excellent cycle performance and the capacity retention ratio is 67.1% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Scanning electronic microscopy images show that the c-POAH binder can contribute to suppressing the pulverization of the Si anode. Moreover, the investigation with X-ray photoelectronic spectrum demonstrates that the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte on Si anode has been mitigated and the c-POAH binder can promote the formation of a more stable SEI film. Our strategy of endowing the binder with good elasticity through in situ cross-linking has opened up a new route for developing binders, which will definitely promote the application of Si anodes in high-energy-density LIBs.

Silicon holds great potential as anode material for next-generation advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its exceptional capacity. However, its low conductivity and huge volume changes during charge/discharge process result in a poor electrochemical performance of silicon anode. This study introduces a cost-effective strategy to repurpose KL Si waste from photovoltaic industry into feedstock for LIBs. A Si@C composite with core–shell structure was synthesized from kerf loss (KL) Si waste as the primary capacity contributing ingredient. The nanoscale Si particles (Si NPs) was produced through ball milling and acid pickling of KL Si waste, and then coated a carbon shell by the pyrolyzed phenolic resin. This core–shell structure enhances the electrical conductivity of silicon-based anode, facilitates ion/electron movement, and reduces volume fluctuations of silicon during lithiation/de-lithiation process. Compared to the pure Si anode, the Li + transmission efficiency of the Si@C anode was significantly improved, leading to a better cycle and rate performance. The resulting SP-2 electrode demonstrated a consistent capacity of 602 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles under current density of 0.5 A g −1 . Graphical abstract

The fast and reversible sodiation/desodiation of anode materials remains an indelible yet fascinating target. Herein, a class of the densely packed Si/MXene composite microspheres is constructed and prepared, taking advantages of the synergistic effects of the activated Si nanoparticles and conductive flower-like MXene microspheres with ample ion-diffusion pathways. Consequently, the intrinsic MXene nanosheets with intelligently regulated interlayer spacing can accommodate the volume change induced strain during cycling, and the strong interaction between the Si and MXene matrix greatly contributes to the robust structural stability. As expected, the Si/MXene composite architecture exhibits boosted sodium storage performance, in terms of an inspiring reversible capacity of 751 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , remarkable long-term cycling stability of 376 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 over 500 cycles, and outstanding rate capability (after one consecutive current density changing from 0.1 to 2.0 A·g −1 , a large capacity of 275 mAh·g −1 is regained after suddenly returning the initial current density back to 0.1 A·g −1 and in the subsequent 200 cycles this composite architecture anode still delivers a capacity of 332 mAh·g −1 ). The kinetics analysis indicates superior pseudocapacitive property, high electronic conductivity, and favorable sodium-ion adsorption and diffusion capability, confirming fast sodium storage performance. Impressively, ex-situ X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction characterizations corroborate the formation of NaSi 6 as the main sodiation products during the reversible evolutions of cycled proceeding with sodium-ion insertion. This work sheds light on the elaborate design of silicon-based nanostructured anodes towards advanced high-performance sodium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract

Si-based anodes are attracting enormous attention due to the super-high theoretical capacity of silicon (3579 mA h g−1 at room temperature) as an anode of lithium-ion batteries. Extensive efforts have been made to explore various composite structures to enhance the electron transmission performance throughout the anodic electrodes and improve the cycling stability. However, the obtained electrochemical reactivity of the Si anode is still limited due to the low conductivity of Si. To address this issue, we exploit a novel approach to embed highly conductive WSi2 nanodots within Si nanoparticles (WSi2/Si). In this structure, WSi2 nanodots (2–5 nm) are well-dispersed within an irregular Si matrix with a primary particle size of 30–70 nm that can facilitate the electron transport, thereby enhancing the electronic conductivity and improving the electrochemical reaction activity, and thus achieving high capacity and good rate performance. As a result, the WSi2/Si composite shows a high electrical conductivity of 1.613 S cm−1 compared with non-doped Si with 1.182 × 10−5 S cm−1. The WSi2/Si composite exhibits superior electrochemical performance, including an initial charge capacity of 2001.2 mA h g−1 at 0.84 A g−1 and a high capacity retention of 75.2% after 200 cycles. In addition, the WSi2/Si composite exhibits an excellent cycling stability of 903.4 mA h g−1 over 1000 cycles at 4.2 A g−1. Even at a high rate of 6.72 A g−1, a reversible capacity of 692.6 mA h g−1 can be maintained. Remarkably, the lithiation-induced volume change of the Si matrix is effectively alleviated due to the well-dispersed WSi2 nanodots within the Si matrix. This work could provide a valuable reference for preparing highly conductive Si via a simple and scalable method as a starting material for preparation of high performance Si-based composites.

Silicon possesses high theoretical specific capacity but suffers from huge volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity during cycling, resulting in significantly reduced capacity and poor cycling stability. These issues could greatly be alleviated by the encapsulation of silicon nanoparticles in carbon materials. Therefore, a three-dimensional (3D) network Si@CTS precursor was prepared in this work through in-situ encapsulation of silicon nanoparticles in stable hydrogel formed by crosslinking chitosan with glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. After freeze-drying followed by oxidation stabilization at 280 ºC for 2 h under air and subsequent heat treatment at 800 ºC for 2 h under Ar atmosphere, uniformly distributed 3D Si@C composites were obtained. The effects of added amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the structures and electrochemical properties of the as-obtained composites were investigated. The results showed uniformly distributed silicon nanoparticles in the amorphous carbon layer owing to the freeze-drying and oxidation treatments conducive to maintaining the skeleton structure of the material. The amorphous carbon and appropriate CNTs effectively buffered the volume changes, as well as improved the ionic and electronic conductivity. Si@C/CNTs-10% showed better comprehensive electrochemical performances at CNTs added amount of about 10 wt%. The discharge specific capacities at 0.1 A·g −1 after 150 cycles, as well as at 1.0 and 2.0 A·g −1 after 1000 cycles were estimated to 943.1, 461.3, and 123.1 mAh·g −1 , respectively.

The silicon-based material exhibits a high theoretical specific capacity and is one of the best anode for the next generation of advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it is difficult for the silicon-based anode to form a stable solid-state interphase (SEI) during Li alloy/de-alloy process due to the large volume change (up to 300%) between silicon and Li 4.4 Si, which seriously limits the cycle life of the LIBs. Herein, we use strontium fluoride (SrF 2 ) particle to coat the silicon-carbon (Si/C) electrode (SrF 2 @Si/C) to help forming a stable and high mechanical strength SEI by spontaneously embedding the SrF 2 particle into SEI. Meanwhile the formed SEI can inhibit the volume expansion of the silicon-carbon anode during the cycle. The electrochemical test results show that the cycle performance and the ionic conductivity of the SrF 2 @Si/C anode has been significantly improved. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis reveals that there are fewer electrolyte decomposition products formed on the surface of the SrF 2 @Si/C anode. This study provides a facile approach to overcome the problems of Si/C electrode during the electrochemical cycling, which will be beneficial to the industrial application of silicon-based anode materials.

A blue fluorescent Si/CDs is successfully synthesized via a conventional solvothermal method , which can serve as a sensitive fluorescent sensor to detect Hg 2+ ions in water. The synthesized Si/CDs material exhibits excellent optical properties , high chemical and structural stability in an aqueous solution. Under natural light, the mixture is a colorless suspension while under ultraviolet light, it can emit bright blue fluorescence and the maximum excitation and emission wavelengths are 377 and 464 nm, respectively. Particularly, Hg 2+ can lead to nearly complete fluorescence quenching of the material suspension and the emission intensity of the constructed fluorescent sensing system linearly decreases with increasing Hg 2+ concentration in the range of 0–200 μM with a detection limit of 26.7 nM (S/N = 3). The proposed method has been successfully applied in detection of Hg 2+ content in environmental and drinking water samples. In addition, the test paper strips based on fluorescent Si/CDs are also prepared by an immersion method for rapid and quantitative detection of Hg 2+ in water environment through a visual mode.

The application of flexible indium tin oxide (ITO)-free electrochromic devices (FCDs) has always been a research hotspot in flexible electronics. Recently, a silver nanowire (AgNW)-based transparent conductive film has raised great interest as an ITO-free substrate for FCDs. However, several challenges, such as the weak binding of AgNWs to the substrate, high junction resistance, and oxidation of AgNWs, remain. In this paper, a novel method for surface modification of AgNWs with N-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane [Si(NH2)] solution is proposed to enhance the bonding with the flexible substrates and the active materials, thereby inhibiting the delamination of AgNWs from the substrate and reducing the high junction resistance between nanowires. The TiO2/AgNW–Si(NH2)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films show outstanding mechanical properties, of which the resistance remains almost unchanged after mechanical bending of 5000 cycles (ΔR/R0 ≈ 3.6%) and repeated peeling off cycles with 3M tape 100 times (ΔR/R0 ≈ 6.0%). In addition, we found that the oxygen-containing groups on the TiO2/AgNW–Si(NH2)/PET surface form hydrogen bonds with the TiO2 sol, resulting in tight contact between the TiO2 sol and the AgNWs, which prevents the AgNWs from oxidation. As a result, the TiO2/AgNW–Si(NH2)/PET film exhibited long-time aging (ΔR/R0 ≈ 4.9% in the air for 100 days) stability. A FCD was constructed with the TiO2/AgNW–Si(NH2)/PET film, which showed excellent electrochromic performance (94% retention) after 5000 bending cycles, indicating high stability and mechanical flexibility. These results present a promising solution to the transparent conductive films for flexible energy devices.

The silicon- modified nickel oxide catalysts with the same compositions but distinct Ni-Si interactions were obtained via different synthesis routes and utilized for methane combustion under conditions of oscillating temperatures. For catalysts prepared by co-grinding, amorphous SiO 2 was dispersed on the surface of large NiO crystallites . During high-temperature calcination or reactions, the crystallization of SiO 2 , coupled with the sintering or decomposition of NiO crystallites , led to the inferior catalytic activity and stability. Interactions between Ni and Si species were enhanced in catalysts synthesized by precipitation. The Si species was incorporated into the NiO lattice to inhibit the growth of NiO crystallites and to generate nickel silicate species under thermal treatments. The small NiO crystallites provided more Ni 3+ and active oxygen species for methane activation and oxidation , while the bulk nickel silicate species played a pivotal role in improving thermal stability, conjointly provoking excellent catalytic performance in cyclic heating–cooling tests between 180 and 800 °C. This study offers new insights into the design of metal oxide composites for catalytic applications.

Background High-precision and broad-range pH detection is critical for health status assessment, such as signal transduction, enzyme activity, endocytosis, and cell proliferation and apoptosis. Although pH-responsive ratiometric fluorescent probes offer an effective pH monitoring strategy, their preparation often requires multi-step modification and decreases fluorescence efficiency and stability. Herein, we developed a simple method to prepare fluorescent Si dots with dual emission centers for high-precision and broad-range pH monitoring, and the detection of urease based on pH-responsive Si dots and pH monitoring in living cell was further explored. Results The dual-emitting Si dots had two emission centers at 427 nm and 500 nm. The emission at 427 nm showed a fluorescence enhancement and effective quenching in the pH ranges of 3.0-10.0 and 10.0-12.0, respectively. While the emission at 500 nm increased gradually with increasing pH from 3.0 to 12.0. Two linear relationships were obtained between the synchronous fluorescence intensity ratio and pH in the ranges of 7.0-9.5 and 10.0-12.0 with a △pH of 0.1, indicating a broad detection range and high precision. Then the Si dots were used to detect urease activity via urea hydrolysis-mediated pH changes. A linear range of 1-80 U/L was established with a detection limit of 0.28 U/L. Furthermore, the Si dots were used for pH imaging in living HeLa cells. The cells changed from green to blue when the pH of HeLa cells increased from 6.0 to 10.0. Significance These findings collectively suggest that the intrinsic dual-emitting Si dots may offer a simple and versatile platform for developing pH-relevant biosensors and bioimaging applications. Additionally, this approach provides reliable methods for preparing intrinsic dual-emitting probe and constructing fluorescence ratiometrics, which widely used in health status assessment.

The nano-silicon waste produced by photovoltaic/Si-wafer cutting processes (e.g., diamond-wire sawing kerf waste) possesses extremely high recycling value, and converting it into commercial lithium-ion battery anodes holds great research significance. In this study, we pretreated silicon waste to remove excess impurities and prepared polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)- and NaCl-coated Si@C negative electrode materials using simple ball-milling and heat treatment processes. The carbon coating improved the electrochemical performance of the silicon waste. The Si@C-1:1:3 negative electrode with a composition ratio of 1:1:3 exhibited enhanced electrochemical performance. When cycling at 0.5 A g −1 for 300 cycles, the charge-specific capacity remained stable at 810.6 mAh g −1 , with a capacity retention rate of 63.1%. At high current density (3 A g −1 ), the material demonstrated significant rate performance, with capacity of 590.6 mAh g −1 . Due to the formation of stable structural carbon shell material by PVP carbonization, the material capacity was improved; at the same time, a small amount of nitrogen was added to enhance Li + transmission efficiency, and the surface generated a stable dendritic carbon layer to provide more transmission sites for Li + , which significantly improved the conductivity and capacity characteristics. This work provides a simple and feasible method for preparing lithium-ion battery anodes from silicon waste.

Traditional cellulose films lack both effective UV-shielding and durable flame-retardant properties, limiting their use in transparent packaging and protective. In this study, a highly transparent, UV-shielding, and flame-retardant cellulose composite film was fabricated via a solvent-exchange route. Water-insoluble triphenyl phosphate (TPP) flame retardant was diffused through ethanol into regenerated cellulose (RC) gel prepared by NaOH/urea/H 2 O low temperature dissolving system, followed by post-treatment with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) ethanol solution to improve the compatibility between TPP and RC and drying. The obtained PNSi-RC films exhibit visible-light transmittance exceeding 85% and demonstrate improvement in UV shielding capability. Moreover, the PNSi 7 -RC film achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29 and a UL-94 V-0 rating, exhibiting good flame-retardant property. The films remained largely consistent flame-retardant performance after water exposure for 24 h, and the LOI values were almost no changes. This simple strategy can be scalable to the preparation process of other films for green flame-retardant packaging and protective.
