Characterization and Wear Behaviors of Electrodeposited Ni-MoS2/SiC Composite Coating

Yutao Yan,Lifeng Lu,Yuqiu Huo,Yong Zhao

Among the preparation methods of functional coatings, the electrodeposition technique has attracted much attention due to its advantages of economy, high efficiency and good structural adaptability. The application of aluminum alloy materials is greatly limited due to their poor friction reduction and wear resistance. Therefore, to enhance the tribological behaviors of aluminum alloy materials, the Ni-MoS2, Ni-SiC and Ni-MoS2/SiC composite coatings were prepared on the 2218 aluminum alloy by an electrodeposition technique. The prepared composite coating samples exhibited a compact and dense microstructure, which was consistent with the result of their high microhardness. No obvious microcracks and defects appeared at the interfaces, indicating that the composite coating samples had good adhesion to the substrates and can effectively improve the frictional shear resistance. The results of wear experiment showed that the wear rate, friction coefficient and friction response time of all composite coating samples were lower than that of the substrate sample. However, the friction reduction and wear resistance of the same composite coating sample were not consistent. The friction coefficient of the Ni-MoS2composite coating sample was the lowest, and the wear rate of the Ni-SiC composite coating sample was the lowest. According to the worn surface observations, the wear mechanism of composite coating samples was mainly characterized by the mild abrasive wear, flake spalling, tearing and pits caused by particle shedding, and the substrate sample showed a severe adhesive wear and abrasive wear. Keywords:electrodeposition;composite coating;microstructure;friction;wear mechanism

Controlled preparation of core-shell SiC/graphene powders by combustion synthesis

Fei Li,Wei Cui,Zhaobo Tian,Jie Zhang,Songmo Du,Zhanglin Chen,Shijia Zhang,Kexin Chen,Guanghua Liu

High-purity SiC/graphene powders with the core-shell structure were controllably prepared by combustion synthesis from Mg/SiC powders in 0.5 MPa CO 2 atmosphere. The maximum reaction temperatures were much higher than 1000 ℃, greatly promoting the vapor reaction between Mg and CO 2 . The thickness of synthesized graphene can be well regulated in the range of 1–10 layers by changing the Mg/SiC mass ratio in the raw materials. The graphene layers were complete and uniformly coated on the surface of SiC particles. The interface between SiC and graphene was clear and well bonded without any interface separation or amorphous layer. Further, core-shell SiC/graphene powders synthesized in this work have great potential for application in the field of electromagnetic shielding, photocatalysis , etc.

A stereolithographic diamond-mixed resin slurry for complex SiC ceramic structures

Ruiguang Chen,Qin Lian,Xiaoning He,Jiuhong Wang,Dichen Li

Over the years, stereolithography has been successfully used to prepare complex, strong silicon carbide (SiC) structures. However, most raw materials are dark in color and therefore have broad-spectrum absorbing properties, making the curing steps during stereolithography highly inefficient. Here, diamond powders were mixed with a light-curing resin, yielding a slurry with excellent curability. The slurry was then used to prepare SiC-based composites with complex morphologies using pyrolysis and reaction melt infiltration (RMI) process. The influence of the diamond volume fraction in the slurry on each process stage was investigated. The infiltration of molten Si into diamond body during RMI was greatly enhanced compared to traditional carbon bodies. SiC ceramic-based composites with complex morphologies and a maximum strength of ∼460 MPa was prepared rapidly and efficiently. This study demonstrates the great potential of the slurry for efficiently manufacturing SiC-based composites in mechanical parts where high strength and complex structures are needed.

Gelcasting of complex-shaped ZrB2–SiC ultra high temperature ceramic components

Rujie He,Ping Hu,Xinghong Zhang,Chen Liu

Complex-shaped ZrB 2 –SiC ultra high temperature ceramic components were successfully fabricated by gelcasting technique and pressureless sintering. When 0.4   wt% poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was used as dispersant and the pH value was 10, an aqueous ZrB 2 –SiC–B 4 C–C slurry with a high solid loading up to 50   vol% but low viscosity (3.1   Pa   s at 60   s −1 ) was prepared. For gelcasting process, the suitable monomers content (AM and MBAM) and the mass ratio of monomers (AM/MBAM) were selected as 3   wt% and 15:1, respectively. After pressureless sintering at 2100   °C for 2   h, ZrB 2 –SiC ceramics (using B 4 C and C as sintering additives) finally achieved about 98% density. Investigation of the mechanical properties revealed a flexural strength of 405±27   MPa and a fracture toughness of 4.3±0.3   MPa   m 1/2 . Complex-shaped ZrB 2 –SiC ceramic components with homogeneous microstructure were also successfully produced. This study confirms that gelcasting is a reliable process for the fabricating of complex-shaped ultra high temperature ceramic components with satisfied properties.

Fabrication of SiC fibers by combining dry spinning with thermal crosslinking

Ye Cai,Li Xiaohong,Chen Jianjun,Hafsa

Crosslinking is a crucial step to keep fibrous morphology and improve ceramic yield in the fabrication process of SiC fibers. Comparing with the oxygen crosslinking, thermal crosslinking can reduce the introduction of oxygen within fibers. In this study, a novel method for preparing the SiC fibers was proposed by combining dry spinning and thermal crosslinking. The spinning solution was prepared by blending a low-molecular-weight (~ 1000 Da) polycarbosilane (PCS) with polyisobutene (PIB) as spinning additive, acrylic acid (AA) as crosslinking agent, and 2,2'-Azobis (2,4-dimethyl) valeronitrile (ABVN) as initiator. The crosslinking mechanism, morphology, composition and microstructure, and mechanical properties of fibers were investigated. The results showed that the morphology of AA-containing PCS fibers was well preserved at 300 ℃ with a low heating rate (0.5 ℃/min), while PCS fibers without AA exhibited the melting or deformation. The crosslinking reaction between C = C groups in AA-containing PCS and Si–H bonds in PCS was triggered by ABVN. Furthermore, AA-containing PCS green fibers experienced pyrolysis at 1100 ℃ and then were annealed at 1500 ℃ (denoted as SiC-1500). SiC-1500 fibers, with an average diameter of 10.47 ± 0.50 μm and average tensile strength of 1.35 ± 0.65 GPa, have a smooth surface and relative dense structure. But SiC-1500 fibers were still an amorphous structure due to the suppression of graphite phase for the growth of β-SiC grains. This work not only breaks through the limitations that only uses high-molecular-weight PCS for dry spinning, but also successfully combines dry spinning and thermal crosslinking technology to obtain SiC fibers. Dispersion and co-dispersion of ZrB2 and SiC nanopowders in ethanol

Xinghong Zhang,Yang Hou,Ping Hu,Wenbo Han,Junting Luo

The dispersion and co-dispersion behavior of ZrB 2 and SiC nanopowders in ethanol solution was studied by sedimentation test, particle size measurement and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis. The dispersion behavior of ZrB 2 and SiC nanopowders in ethanol solution was strongly dependent on the pH values, types and amounts of dispersant. PEI was found to be effective for the dispersion of both ZrB 2 and SiC nanopowders in ethanol solution. With the addition of PEI, the isoelectric points of ZrB 2 and SiC nanopowders in ethanol solution were at pH 10 and pH 9.5, and shift to pH 13 and pH 12.3, respectively. The stability of ZrB 2 suspension increased with the dispersant content increasing until reached 0.7   wt% and well-dispersed SiC slurry can be obtained with more than 2.5   wt% PEI. The suitable pH value for the dispersion of ZrB 2 and SiC nanopowders should be lower than 12 and 10, respectively. The well co-dispersed ZrB 2 and SiC nanocomposite powders can be achieved by using 1   wt% or more PEI below pH 10.

Preparation and friction properties of SiC-Al2O3/2A50 co-continuous composites

Yushi Qi,Jiangfan Xu,Yanhan Fei,Lanjun Du,Yan Ren,Wenbo Han,Gang Chen,Zhiming Du

This study investigated the preparation of SiC porous ceramics using an organic foam impregnation-high temperature sintering process. To address the poor wettability of SiC ceramics when used as the reinforcement phase, the surface of SiC porous ceramics was modified with Al 2 O 3 . SiC-Al 2 O 3 /2A50 co-continuous composites were then fabricated by infiltrating 2A50 aluminum alloy into the SiC-Al 2 O 3 porous ceramics under pressure. Microstructural observations, along with friction, wear performance, and thermal stability test, demonstrated that Al 2 O 3 surface modification significantly enhances the friction and wear performance as well as the thermal stability of the co-continuous composites. The prepared SiC-Al 2 O 3 /2A50 co-continuous composite exhibited excellent wear resistance, good thermal stability and stable bonding at heterogeneous interfaces. Compared to 38CrSi steel, the SiC-Al 2 O 3 /2A50 co-continuous composite not only offers the advantage of reduced weight but also shows a significantly lower wear rate of 9.3 × 10 −5  mm 3 /N·min under a 50 N load. These findings suggest that the SiC-Al 2 O 3 /2A50 co-continuous composite has the potential to replace 38CrSi steel as a wear-resistant material.

Preparation and mechanical performance of SiCf/SiC minicomposites with HfSiO4 interphase

Chengmou Deng,Huiyong Yang,Juntong Huang,Ruiying Luo,Lianyi Wang,Zhi Chen,Wei Li,Jintao Qiu,Wenpeng Li

SiC fiber bundles with 1–4 HfSiO 4 sub-layers as the interface coating were successfully obtained with detailed optimized preparation parameters via the non-hydrolyzed sol-gel ( NHSG) and dip-coating method. Subsequently, SiC f /SiC minicomposites reinforced with HfSiO 4 -coated fibers were fabricated through a precursor infiltration pyrolysis ( PIP ) process. The tensile behavior and microstructures of the prepared SiC f /SiC minicomposites treated at room temperature, 800 ℃, and 1000 ℃ in an air atmosphere were investigated. The toughening mechanism of the HfSiO 4 interphase in the SiC f /SiC minicomposites and the corresponding anti-oxidant properties were also thoroughly discussed. Results indicate that SiC f /SiC minicomposites with the HfSiO 4 interphase possessed a nearly pseudo-plastic fracture characteristic and significantly enhanced anti-oxidant properties. It is inspired that the properties of the SiC f /SiC minicomposites could be adjusted by controlling the thickness of the HfSiO 4 interphase to acquire desirable properties such as a higher tensile strength or better oxidation resistance.

Sodium alginate derived SiC-carbon composite aerogel for effective microwave absorption

Xiaohu Ren,Le Huang,Hudie Yuan,Hongfeng Yin,Huiqing Fan,Yuchi Liu,Yalou Xin,Yun Tang,Chao Wang

Biomass-derived carbon aerogels are expected to be ideal candidates for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption due to their extensive sources, cheap cost, low density and abundant porosity. Herein, using the natural polymer sodium alginate (SA) as the carbon-based precursor and SiC nano-whiskers (SiC w ) as the reinforcing material, a series of three-dimensional (3D) SiC w @C composite aerogels doped with different metal ions (Fe, Ni, Al) were designed and studied for lightweight and effective EMW absorption. The emergence of metal ions and three-dimensional conductive carbon networks enriches the loss mechanism of the composites. The results show that the SiC w @C-Al exhibits a considerable minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value at 1.5 mm thickness (-28.7 dB) and a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < -10 dB) of 4.1 GHz. Meanwhile, SiC w @C-Fe has good wave absorption performance at a thickness of 2 mm, RL min is −49.2 dB, and EAB is 3.6 GHz. By adjusting the matching thickness of the Al 3+ and Fe 3+ crosslinked composite aerogel from 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm, the integrated EAB can cover the Ku-band, X-band and even C-band. The SA derived 3D SiC w @C composite aerogels open a new path for the design of lightweight and effective EMW absorption materials used in multi-frequency.

Pore defects repair of CCF/SiC composites fabricated by additive manufacturing

Tianlong Liu,Lijun Xiong,Zhaofeng Chen,Le Lu,Manna Li,Zhudan Ma,Lixia Yang,Guoping Wu,Yuming Xing,Xingpu Wang,Ce Sun,Kai Liu

This work presents the pore defects repair of additively manufactured chopped carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide (CCF/SiC) composites using a combination of chemical vapour deposition (with methyltrichlorosilane and hydrogen as the precursor material) and reactive melt infiltration. The in-situ generation of silicon carbide nanowires (SiC nws ) in the CCF/SiC composites significantly reduced the initial pore defects size, while the secondary SiC and free Si filled and closed the pore defects. The X-CT shows that the CCF/SiC composite after pore defects repair was internally dense and no significant pore geometry was observed. The incorporation of micron-sized CCF and nano-sized SiC nws as reinforcing phases resulted in a synergistic toughening effect. Specifically, the CCF enhances toughness through fibre debonding and pull-out mechanisms, while the SiC nws contribute to toughening through nanowire bridging and pull-out mechanisms. This dual toughening mechanism significantly improved bending strength from 210.7 to 274.5 MPa and elevated the fracture toughness from 3.2 to 3.6 MPa m 1/2 . Another notable advantage of the SiC nws is their ability to form a space network and reduce the thermal expansion coefficient. Consequently, this novel microstructural pore defects repair approach further enhanced the overall performance and reliability of the CCF/SiC composites based on additive manufacturing. This innovative approach holds great promise for the development of high-performance complex-structure CCF/SiC composites with wide-ranging applications across various industries.

Negative thermal expansion in Ti2O3-SiC composites induced by microstructural effect

Naike Shi,Xuyang Yan,Longlong Fan,Meng Xu,Yiming Yang,Mengzhe Hou,Takumi Nishikubo,Masaki Azuma,Jun Chen

Regulating and reducing the thermal expansion of materials has long been a challenge. In this study, a composite with negative thermal expansion (NTE) has been obtained by combining two intrinsically positive thermal expansion (PTE) materials—Ti 2 O 3 and SiC via microstructural effect. We have realized the successful retention and amplification of the microstructural effect of Ti 2 O 3 within the composite. The synchrotron X-ray computed tomography and mercury injection porosimeter reveals that the composite exhibits a unique pore distribution and enhanced porosity, enabling NTE properties that exceed theoretical predictions. This work provides a novel approach to transforming the intrinsic thermal expansion behavior of materials via microstructural effect, paving the way for innovative applications of NTE materials in precision engineering.

Temperature Effect on the Dust Filtration Performance of SiC Ceramic Membranes

Jinxin Gan,Lekai Zhao,Jiesong Tan,Yiqing Zeng,Jiangxiao Qiao,Jiahao Chen,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

High-temperature filtration is an energy-saving and efficient technology for treating high-temperature dusty exhaust, while most of the current studies focus on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and their application in room-temperature filtration. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were prepared as typical high-temperature filtration materials to systematically investigate the high-temperature filtration process at 25–400 °C. The experimental results show that the filtration temperature has a significant effect on both initial filtration and cake filtration processes. The increase of temperature results in an increase of gas viscosity, which contributes to the increase of the initial filtration pressure drop (ΔP0). Meanwhile, temperature can affect the forces on dust in the pore of the SiC membrane, and a higher temperature leads to the easy penetration of dust (especially for the ultrafine particles) through the membrane layer into the support body layer at the initial filtration process. Moreover, the higher temperature can reduce the porosity of the dust cake, leading to an increase in the cake pressure drop (ΔPc). All above results were further proved during the experiments on studying the effect of the filtration velocity, dust concentration, and regeneration on the filtration performance of SiC membranes at 25 and 300 °C. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and on the understanding of the high-temperature filtration process.
