Constructing Al@C–Sn pellet anode without passivation layer for lithium-ion battery

Cao Kangzhe,Wang Sitian,He Yanan,Ma Jiahui,Yue Ziwei,Liu Huiqiao

Al is considered as a promising lithium-ion battery (LIBs) anode materials owing to its high theoretical capacity and appropriate lithation/de-lithation potential. Unfortunately, its inevitable volume expansion causes the electrode structure instability, leading to poor cyclic stability. What’s worse, the natural Al 2 O 3 layer on commercial Al pellets is always existed as a robust insulating barrier for electrons, which brings the voltage dip and results in low reversible capacity. Herein, this work synthesized core–shell Al@C–Sn pellets for LIBs by a plus-minus strategy. In this proposal, the natural Al 2 O 3 passivation layer is eliminated when annealing the pre-introduced SnCl 2 , meanwhile, polydopamine-derived carbon is introduced as dual functional shell to liberate the fresh Al core from re-oxidization and alleviate the volume swellings. Benefiting from the addition of C–Sn shell and the elimination of the Al 2 O 3 passivation layer, the as-prepared Al@C–Sn pellet electrode exhibits little voltage dip and delivers a reversible capacity of 1018.7 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 and 295.0 mAh·g −1 at 2.0 A·g −1 (after 1000 cycles), respectively. Moreover, its diffusion-controlled capacity is muchly improved compared to those of its counterparts, confirming the well-designed nanostructure contributes to the rapid Li-ion diffusion and further enhances the lithium storage activity.

Ti2SnC MAX phase with in-situ generated Sn nanoparticles for lithium-ion storage

Jingwen Tang,Wei Zheng,Hanning Zhang,Peigen Zhang,Jianxiang Ding,Congyuan Zeng,Wei Zhang,Nosipho Moloto,ZhengMing Sun

Tin-based anode materials, while notable for their high volumetric capacity, often experience rapid capacity decay during cycling due to volume expansion, pulverization, and agglomeration. Herein, we synthesized a nanoscale composite through a thermo-mechanochemical process utilizing the mechanical anisotropy of Ti 2 SnC MAX phase. This composite incorporates in-situ generated nano-Sn particles within a Ti 2 SnC matrix characterized by Sn vacancies. The strategic integration of uniformly nano-Sn particles and the refined granularity of the Ti 2 SnC matrix markedly enhance the electrochemical properties of the anode. Impressively, it maintains a volumetric capacity of 1430 mAh cm −3 after 400 cycles, equivalent to approximately 3370 h, at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 . Post-cycling analysis reveals the transformation of Sn into a nanocrystalline state and the gradual exposure of more Sn active sites within the Ti 2 SnC matrix, significantly enhancing lithium-ion storage performance. This study highlights the crucial role of the A-site atomic layer in MAX phases and, considering the compositional diversity of MAX phases, offers new insights and broad applicability in lithium-ion battery technologies.

3D ZnF2–Sn Composite Anode for Ultra-Long-Life Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Zhu Keyu,Lei Zuomin,Hu Mengliang,Qu Zongtao,Lyu Shu-shen,Mo Dong-chuan

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries hold great promise for large-scale energy storage due to the natural abundance and intrinsic safety of zinc. However, practical application is hindered by uncontrollable dendrite growth and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the zinc metal anode. Here, we fabricate a three-dimensional (3D) ZnF 2 –Sn composite zinc metal anode via a one-step method. The outer ZnF 2 layer and inner Sn layer synergistically suppress HER and regulate zinc deposition, effectively mitigating dendrite formation. The 3D architecture further accommodates volume variations during long-term cycling, alleviating structural degradation. Consequently, a symmetric cell achieves a cycling life exceeding 2000 h, and an asymmetric cell with a Cu current collector maintains a high Coulombic efficiency over 2000 cycles. More importantly, a Zn–I 2 full cell delivers a capacity retention of 94% after 5000 cycles at 1 A g –1 . This work provides a rational design strategy for high-performance, long-life zinc metal anodes in aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Boosting selective room-temperature hydrogenation of furfural over carbon supported Ru-Sn catalyst

Zhao Yang,Bing Hui Chen

Introduction of Sn boosts selective C O hydrogenation of furfural. • Catalyst shows 99% yield of furfuryl alcohol without any external heat input. • Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by ethylene glycol method enhances activity. • Constructed metal-support interaction strengthens the reusability. Catalytic hydrogenation of C O is critical for converting biomass-derived platform molecules to value-added chemicals. However, how to strike a balance for the catalysis between high efficiency and green production remains a challenge. In this work, carbon supported Ru-Sn catalyst showed excellent room-temperature performance in furfural hydrogenation, > 99% furfural conversion with > 99% product selectivity to furfuryl alcohol can be achieved without external heating source. The solvent was found to play an important role in catalytic performance. Compared with Ru/C, introduction of Sn markedly enhanced the catalytic performance. The introduced Sn behaves as the electrophilic C O activation sites in catalysis, a synergy between Ru and Sn enhances the activity. Ru-Su/C synthesized via ethylene glycol (E-G) method showed a higher activity than that synthesized by hydrazine hydrate (H-H) method, whereas the latter exhibited a better reusability than the former. Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by E-G method boosts the catalytic activity, whereas the strong anchoring effect of the support in Ru-Sn/C (H-H) strengthens the catalytic reusability. This study revealed a practical way to regulate the Ru-Sn sites configuration of Ru-Sn/C used in efficient furfural hydrogenation at room-temperature. Hydrogen-bond-mediated interfacial chemistry enables reversible anodes for durable Sn–air batteries

Junjie Wang,Shulin Gao,Sujuan Hu

Tin (Sn)–air batteries promise high capacity and environmentally benign chemistry, but their progress is fundamentally constrained by the poor reversibility of Sn anodes. The key intermediate Sn(OH) 3 − is electrostatically excluded from the Helmholtz layer, resulting in poor stripping/plating reversibility. Herein, we propose a urea-enabled interfacial regulation strategy to improve the reversibility of Sn anodes in which urea stabilizes the interfacial adsorption of the intermediate via hydrogen-bond binding to Sn(OH) 3 − and van der Waals coupling with carbon substrates. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that the strong (urea)N-H···O(Sn(OH) 3 − ) hydrogen bonding regulated the local solvation environment and reduced the desolvation free energy. In parallel, urea reorganized the electrical double layer (EDL) to form a more hydrophobic interfacial microenvironment, which suppressed hydrogen evolution. This achieved highly reversible Sn deposition/stripping, allowing symmetric cells to operate stably for >1000 h at 5 mA cm −2 and full cells to deliver 381.2 mWh g −1 with a cycling life of 769 h. This work establishes a hydrogen bond regulation strategy for Sn–air batteries to regulate the interfacial chemistry of anodes. Urea interacts with Sn(OH) 3 − through N–H···O hydrogen bonds, which facilitates its interfacial adsorption and desolvation. At the same time, urea helps reconstruct a more hydrophobic electric double-layer environment and suppresses the hydrogen evolution side reaction. These effects together lead to more reversible Sn deposition/stripping and improved cycling performance of the Sn–air battery. Strengthening mechanisms of Cu@Sn composite joints formed via transient liquid phase sintering

Bi Wang,Jian Huang,Lili Wang,Chengxu Lin,Caihang Liang,Qi Feng,Hongbo Qin

Herein, Cu@Sn core–shell particles were prepared and used to formulate a novel transient liquid phase sintering composite paste. Composite joints fabricated from this paste achieved low-temperature bonding while offering excellent mechanical strength and high-temperature service capability. Cu@Sn particles with a uniform Sn shell were produced via electroless tin plating, and the effect of the Cu@Sn: Sn mass proportions on the shear strength of the joints was systematically evaluated. The joints prepared by sintering the paste with a Cu@Sn: Sn mass proportion of 6:4 at 260 °C under 10 MPa pressure for 15 min achieved a shear strength of 106.84 MPa at 25 °C and retained 94.26 MPa at 300 °C. Microstructural characterization revealed that appropriate addition of Sn particles effectively regulated the formation and distribution of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) and markedly reduced the porosity of the sintered layer. The formation of fine-grained Cu 3 Sn substantially enhanced the joint strength; meanwhile, the development of subgrains and low-angle grain boundaries on the Cu substrate side of the substrate/sintered layer interface improved the interfacial bonding. The accumulation of dislocations at the soft Cu particles against the hard IMC phases generated back stress and increased strain hardening, promoting hetero-deformation induced strengthening in the heterostructured materials. Twin boundaries observed in some Cu cores also acted as barriers to dislocation motion, promoting dislocation storage while preserving the plasticity of the Cu phase, thereby further increasing the strength of the Cu@Sn composite joints.

Stable Near-Infrared Sn−Pb Perovskite Photodetectors Enabled by Synergistic Solvent−Additive Engineering

Xin Wen,Yuqin Hu,Qian Chen,Xi Chen,Min Zhang,Junhui Dai,Dexiong Song,Feng Qiu,Rongfei Wang,Feng Lin,Chong Wang,Jie Yang

Abstract Tin−lead (Sn−Pb) mixed perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for near-infrared photodetection owing to their narrow bandgaps and outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, the facile oxidation of Sn2+ and the high defect density within the perovskite films severely limit the detection sensitivity and environmental stability of the resulting devices. Herein, we propose a combined modification strategy integrating DMPU-based solvent engineering with guanidinosuccinic acid (GSA) additive engineering to improve the crystallization quality and surface chemical stability of Sn−Pb perovskite films. Mechanistic insights indicate that the strong Lewis base DMPU effectively regulates the crystallization kinetics through coordination with inorganic components in the precursor, yielding compact and smooth films. Meanwhile, GSA molecules introduce strong coordination with undercoordinated surface ions through their functional groups, suppressing the oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+. Consecutively, the modified photodetectors exhibit superior electrical and photoresponse performance. At zero bias, the optimized device yields a low dark current density of 1.49 × 10−9 A cm−2, a broad spectral response from 350 to 850 nm, a peak responsivity of 0.362 A W−1 at 830 nm, and a specific detectivity of 1.28 × 1012 Jones. In addition, the device shows an expanded linear dynamic range of 89 dB and fast response/recovery times of 86/112 μs. Stability tests further demonstrate that the unencapsulated device retains 80% and 78% of its initial performance after being maintained in the dark under nitrogen at 85 °C for 700 h and stored in the dark in a nitrogen-filled glovebox at 25 ± 2 °C for 2500 h, respectively. This work provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance near-infrared perovskite photodetectors.

Atomically Dispersed Fe‐Modified SnS for Sn‐Centered Peroxymonosulfate Activation Toward Acetaminophen Degradation

Shuhui Liu,Yantao Wang,Ya Liu,Jingkai Lin,Shaobin Wang,Wenjie Tian

SnS is a low‐cost and environmentally benign semiconductor for photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, but its direct use for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation remains limited. Here, we develop a facile Fe substitution strategy to construct atomically dispersed Fe‒S in SnS nanostructures (Fe‐SnS) for efficient PMS activation. The catalytic activity shows a volcano‐shaped dependence on Fe incorporation, with 5% Fe‐SnS (Fe/Sn molar ratio of 4.63%) giving the optimal performance, achieving efficient acetaminophen (APAP) removal with a rate constant of 1.23 min ‒1 , which is 3.84 and 176‐fold higher than those of SnS and commercial SnS, respectively. In situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a site‐dependent activation mechanism in which Sn sites directly coordinate with O in PMS. Density functional theory calculations further show that Fe incorporation induces local electronic redistribution around neighboring Sn sites and enhances the Sn–PMS interfacial interaction. Fe incorporation also attenuates the negative surface charge of SnS, further facilitating PMS interaction. Mechanism studies revealed that APAP degradation proceeds via sulfate and hydroxyl radical‐dominated pathway. These findings clarify the distinct roles of host Sn and atomically dispersed Fe sites in PMS activation. Atomically dispersed Fe regulates the local electronic environment and surface properties of SnS, while PMS preferentially coordinates to Sn through Sn–O interaction. Fe incorporation further enhances the Sn–O PMS interfacial interaction, facilitating Sn‐centered PMS activation and the generation of SO 4 •− /•OH for APAP degradation, thereby clarifying the distinct roles of host Sn and atomic Fe sites.

Self-Supporting Sn-Based Carbon Nanofiber Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jingjie Xie,Lan Xu

Due to its high theoretical specific capacity, abundant resources, accessibility and environmental friendliness, Sn has been considered as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anodes. However, Sn anodes still face great challenges such as huge volume change and low conductivity. Herein, a self-supporting Sn-based carbon nanofiber anode for high-performance LIBs was prepared. Sn-based nanoparticles with high theoretical specific capacity were uniformly embedded in carbon nanofibers, which not only mitigated the volume expansion of Sn-based nanoparticles, but also obtained composite carbon nanofibers with excellent mechanical properties by adjusting the ratio of polyacrylonitrile to polyvinylpyrrolidone, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance. The obtained optimal self-supporting Sn-based carbon nanofiber anode (Sn-SnO2/CNF-2) showed a discharge specific capacity of 607.28 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA/g. Even after 200 cycles, Sn-SnO2/CNF-2 still maintained a capacity of 543.78 mAh/g and maintained its original fiber structure well, demonstrating its good long-term cycling stability. This indicated that the self-supporting Sn-SnO2/CNF-2 anode had great potential for advanced energy storage.

Cu–Sn Alloy Nanoparticle-Modified Carbon Nanofibers for Dendrite-Free Zinc-Ion Batteries

Chang He,Qiao Jiang,Zhehan Yi,Jin Yu,Pinxiang Li,Shandong Tan,Ji Liang,Feng Hou

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are currently highly promising rechargeable batteries offering affordable prices and high reliability. However, the uncontrolled expansion of zinc dendrites, hydrogen evolution reaction, and adverse reaction greatly affect their potential sustainable application. Herein, Cu–Sn nanoparticle alloy-modified carbon nanofibers (Cu/Sn–C) are constructed as a buffer interface region onto the zinc anode. The high density of zincophilic sites of the Cu/Sn–C contributes a homogeneous Zn deposition behavior, ameliorates potential separator penetration of zinc dendrites, and weakens corrosions and adverse reactions. As a result, Cu/Sn–C exhibits a low zinc nucleation overpotential of 33.2 mV and dendrite-free zinc deposition. Besides, a symmetric cell with Cu/Sn–C@Zn anode exhibits outstanding cycling lifespan with over 3500 h at 1 mA cm −2 for 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, Cu/Sn–C@Zn//Mn x V 2 O 5 full battery also achieves stable cycling at 5 A g −1 . This work provides a significant avenue for enhancing the reliability of the Zn anode, thereby facilitating the advancement of widespread applications for the next-generation AZIBs. Graphical Cu–Sn nanoparticle alloy-modified carbon nanofibers (Cu/Sn–C) are constructed as a buffer interface region onto the Zn metal anode. The abundant zincophilic sites of the Cu/Sn–C contribute a homogeneous Zn deposition behavior and weaken side reactions. Therefore, Cu/Sn–C presents a superior rate capability and long-term cycling stability.

Improvement of critical current density in Nb3Al superconductors co-doped by Sn-B

Yaqi He,Xinhua Li,Zhu Qian,ZuPeng Yan,Guizhen Shi,Xia Sun,Zongqing Ma

In this paper, we innovatively introduced Sn and B into the Nb-Al system at the same time and successfully prepared high-performance Nb 3 Al bulks through mechanical alloying and subsequent low-temperature sintering processes. The influence of different doping amounts of B in the Sn-B co-doping on the superconducting properties of Nb 3 Al superconductors was also investigated. It was found that Sn-B co-doping greatly improves the superconducting properties of Nb 3 Al, especially the J c properties, compared with the undoped sample. The optimal doping amount of Sn-B co-doping is finally determined to be 4 at% Sn-2.6 at% B. At this time, the superconducting transition temperature of Nb 3 Al is up to 16.2 K, and the critical current density reaches up to 1.3 × 10 5 A⋅cm −2 (4.2 K, 5 T), which is almost twice higher than that of Sn-doped Nb 3 Al, and one order of magnitude higher than that of general undoped Nb 3 Al. Combined with the phase composition analysis and microstructure observation, we find that with the co-doping of Sn and B, the grain size of Nb 3 Al is refined, and the diffusely distributed Nb 2 Al nanoparticles are introduced, which greatly enhance the magnetic flux pinning effect of Nb 3 Al. Secondly, the intergranular connectivity of Nb 3 Al is significantly improved. The Sn-B co-doped Nb 3 Al superconductors combine the advantages of Sn doping to enhance flux pinning and B doping to improve intergranular connectivity, which synergistically promotes the dramatic improvement of Nb 3 Al superconductivity Nb 3 Al.

Vacancy–assisted exposed Sn atoms enhancing NO2 room temperature sensing of SnSe2 nanoflowers

Huimin Yang,Yazhou Yang,Chaofan Ma,Qirui Wu,Jiahong Tang,Chaoqi Zhu,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

NO 2 is a hazardous gas extremely harmful to the ecosystem and human health, so effective detection of NO 2 is critical. SnSe 2 is a promising candidate for gas sensors owing to its unique layered configuration that facilitates the diffusion of gas molecules. Here, ultrathin self–assembled nanoflowers F–SnSe 2 rich in defects were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method. It exhibits excellent gas sensing performances for NO 2 at room temperature (25 °C), with a high gas sensing response of 8.6 for 1 ppm NO 2 and a lower detection limit as low as 200 ppb, capable of sensitively detecting ppb–level NO 2 . DFT calculations revealed that the presence of Se vacancies assists the central Sn atoms to break through the shielding effect of the surface Se atoms and become exposed active sites. The higher reactivity leads to more charge transfer and higher adsorption energy , which strongly promoted the adsorption of NO 2 . This work verifies the important role of vacancies for the exposed active sites and provides new guidance for defect engineering to modulate the gas sensing performances of SnSe 2 .
