Bioinspired silk fibroin/poly-acrylic acid high-performance hydrogel sensors with micro-architecture prepared by rapid polymerization via TA-Fe3O4@MXene catalytic system

Daen Qin,Chengyu Liu,Kaili Song,Seeram Ramakrishna

Hydrogels are ideal for flexible sensors due to their outstanding advantages such as softness, biocompatibility, and unique flexibility. However, the radical polymerization process of hydrogels is usually associated with intensive input of energy. In this study, tannic acid and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were integrated on conductive MXene nanosheets as catalysts to rapidly polymerize to prepare super-stretchable and highly-sensitive Silk Fibroin/Poly-acrylic acid hydrogel sensors. The synergistic effect of TA and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles can maintain the dynamic redox cycling between Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , to enhance the ability of ammonium persulfate to generate free radicals and rapidly forming hydrogel within 5 min. Inspired by the surface morphology of lotus leaves, a biomimetic strategy was employed to construct micro-protrusion structures on the hydrogel surface in order to enhance its sensitivity. The developed sensor showed excellent tensile strain (946 %) and high tensile strength (195 kPa), high sensitivity (GF = 4.05) and stable cycling ability (>100 cycles). The hydrogel sensor demonstrated high linearity (0.99 within the strain range of 150 %–600 %), low detection limit (1 % for strain and 150 Pa for pressure). Moreover, the hydrogel sensor can accurately detect various physiological signals emitted by the human body, making it highly promising for applications as wearable sensors in personalized healthcare.

Developing a Green PDA@Ce-MOF@TA-Fe Composite to Provide pH-Responsive and Self-Healing Anti-Corrosion Performance for Waterborne Epoxy Coatings

Chunlin Chen,Xiyi Ma,Guoqing Xiao,Mingtan Wang,Junjie Cao,Jing Gou,Hongxin Yan

Waterborne epoxy coatings are favored for their environmental friendliness and low volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions. However, traditional waterborne epoxy coatings have limitations in terms of barrier properties and self-healing ability, resulting in poor long-term corrosion protection. To overcome this shortcoming, a novel green composite based on PDA@Ce-MOF@TA-Fe (PCTF) was developed in this study, aiming to construct a high-performance coating system with enhanced corrosion protection, pH responsiveness, and self-healing properties. The EIS measurements demonstrated a significant enhancement in the barrier property and self-healing capability of the waterborne epoxy coating incorporated with the PCTF composite (PCTF/WEC). After 40 days of immersion in corrosive conditions, the impedance of the PCTF/WEC coating remains at 9.82 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 , which is much higher than that of the WEC coating alone (1.47 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 ). PCTF/WEC coating also shows excellent pH response in acidic environments (pH = 3). Salt spray tests and UV irradiation tests confirm the coating's good weathering resistance. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of long-lasting and environmentally friendly anti-corrosion coatings.

Preparation of Ta-based layer on SS316N as bipolar plate of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells by molten salts disproportionation reaction

Feng Xiong,Hao Deng,Ruoyin Luo,Shaojie Gao,Chenming Fan,Xin Gao,Bing Li

In this study, a dense Ta-based layer with a thickness of 400 nm was fabricated on SS316N bipolar plates (Ta-SS316N) by using a disproportionation reaction of Ta in a K 2 TaF 7 -Ta(powders)-KCl-NaCl molten salt system at 900 °C for 6 h. According to XRD analysis , the Ta-based layer was mainly composed of metallic Ta as well as Ta 2 N 0.86 . In the simulated HT-PEMFC cathode environment, the corrosion current density of Ta-SS316N obtained from the potentiodynamicl polarization curves was 0.96 μA/cm 2 , which meets the 2025 U S. DOE standard. Compared to the SS316N substrate, Ta-SS316N showed two orders of magnitude higher corrosion resistance and nearly 1 V higher self-corrosion potential, with an interfacial contact resistance of 27.5 mΩ∙cm 2 , accounting for about one-quarter that of SS316N substrate. This provides a low-cost, easy-to-operate method to prepare Ta-based layer on stainless steel bipolar plates used for HT-PEMFC.

Controlled surface segregation via hydrogel-facilitated phase separation enables uniform TA/PVP layer and in situ silver assembly for high-performance antifouling membranes

Yuting Sang,Zhan Lv,Yuanyuan Yu,Haotian Hu,Jixiang Yang,Le Han,Liang Shen,Zhongbo Zhou

Surface segregation during non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) enables in-situ membrane functionalization, yet the inherently rapid and uncontrolled phase separation kinetics typically yield heterogeneous additive distribution. Herein, we presented a hydrogel-facilitated phase separation (HFPS) strategy to achieve controlled surface segregation of tannic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone (TA/PVP) for subsequent in-situ Ag + reduction and assembly of a functional AgNPs layer. By exploiting delayed phase separation kinetics, physical confinement and interfacial gelation imparted by the hydrogel, HFPS yielded substantially higher and more uniform TA/PVP surface coverage (79.8%) compared to NIPS (60.9%). This uniformly enriched TA/PVP layer enabled high-density, homogeneous AgNP grafting with a narrow size distribution on HFPS membranes. The optimized HFPS membrane—with balanced TA/PVP and Ag + loadings—exhibited superhydrophilicity (water contact angle ~ 40°), high water flux (895 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), and excellent BSA rejection (>98%)—significantly outperforming its NIPS counterpart (50–65°, 362 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , ~ 98%). In dynamic antifouling tests, it achieved a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 84.7% with BSA filtration and only 5.3% flux decline during bacterial filtration, substantially exceeding NIPS controls (64.4% FRR, ∼45% decline). Moreover, by utilizing patterned hydrogel templates, surface microstructures were introduced to further enhance flux to 994 L·m −2  ·h −1 ·bar −1 and reduce flux decline to 3.8% for bacterial filtration. Ag + release measurements confirmed a higher total Ag loading of 59.1 μg·cm −2 and a stable release rate of 0.199 μg·cm −2 ·day −1 sustained over 40 days. Overall, this HFPS-guided surface segregation strategy offers a promising platform for fabricating high-performance antifouling membranes for engineering applications.

Simultaneous Enhancement of Mildew Resistance and Dimensional Stability of Bamboo with a Facile One-Step In Situ Growth of ZnO/TA/Ag Composites

Juan Xu,Jinju Ma,Lanxiang Liu,Baoshan Tang,Hong Zhang,Wenwen Zhang,Zhengjun Shi

Bamboo is a renewable and fast-growing biomass resource with limited utilization and service life owing to its susceptibility to mold. Conventional nano-modification methods, particularly two-step approaches, are limited by weak interfacial bonding between nanoparticles and the bamboo substrate, complex processing, and an inability to simultaneously enhance antimildew performance and dimensional stability. To address these limitations, we developed a one-step hydrothermal method involving the use of tannic acid (TA) for in situ fabrication of ZnO/TA/Ag composite particles on bamboo surfaces. Process parameters were optimized to 100 °C, 10 h, and a zinc acetate-to-tannic acid molar ratio of 20:1. The modified bamboo was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. We demonstrated that ZnO/TA/Ag composite particles were successfully loaded onto the bamboo surface, thus improving the all-around performance of the bamboo simultaneously. Antimildew activity against Aspergillus niger and Penicillium citrinum increased from grade 4 in untreated bamboo to grades 1 and 0, respectively; water absorption decreased by 52.85%, and anti-swelling efficiency reached 30.41%, indicating improved mold resistance and dimensional stability. Thus, our technique could serve as a green and efficient one-step in situ modification strategy for high-performance functionalization of bamboo, making it suitable for applications in humid outdoor and indoor environments.

Synthesis of a novel poly-TA-Si nanohybrid with dynamic covalent SS bonds and its effect on the mechanical strength of cement paste

Shuzhen Zheng,Wenxiu Qiao,Jianfeng Ma,Yinwen Li,Shoufang Xu,Qianping Ran

Using organic/inorganic nanocomposites to optimize the microstructures of cement hydration products at the micro/nanometre scale is a promising method for improving the mechanical properties of cement-based materials. One type of novel nanohybrid material modified by the flexible autonomous healing polymer poly-TA (thioctic acid) was synthesized and used as a highly efficient mechanical improvement agent for cement paste. The nanohybrids linear LNTS-1 and bulk CNTS-2 were synthesized from silane-coupled nanosilica and alpha thioctic acid. Due to the existence of hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds and dynamic covalent S S bonds, this type of linear poly-TA with a certain amount of calcium content exhibited good self-healing properties. Linear LNTS-1 can effectively improve the macro flexural strength of cement-based materials without a negative effect on their compressive strength. The flexural strength of cement pastes with 1.0‰ LNTS-1 increased by 11.9%, 15.6%, and 16.9% after curing for 3, 7, and 28 d compared with the control cement paste. The results of adsorption experiments show that nanohybrid LNTS-1 has strong adsorption on calcium ions, which affects the formation of cement hydration products.

Tannic acid (TA)-based coating modified membrane enhanced by successive inkjet printing of Fe3+ and sodium periodate (SP) for efficient oil-water separation

Hongli Xie,Liguo Shen,Yanchao Xu,Huachang Hong,Lining Yang,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin

Wettability of membrane is of vital importance for treatment of oily wastewater. In recent years, hydrophilic modifications based on plant polyphenol have been widely investigated to enhance the anti-fouling property of membranes due to their mild conditions, versatility and low cost. However, there are still some problems in improving raw material utilization and hydrophilicity. Herein, a facile method was proposed to optimize tannic acid (TA)-based membrane modification process by synergistically inducing TA deposition by Fe 3+ and SP with the assistance of inkjet printing. The hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was converted to hydrophilicity (WCA = 34.6°) and underwater oleophobicity (UOCA = 144.4°) in very short time (10 min). The optimum PVDF/Fe-TA-SP 422 membrane possessed high flux (4968.4–7340.4 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 ) for a number of oil/water emulsions with high separation efficiency (>98%), outperforming most state-of-the-art membranes for oil-water separation. Furthermore, the optimized membrane displayed not only high antifouling property and reusability with flux recovery ratio of 89.1%–98.0% after eight-cycle filtration, but also desired stability under near neutral pH conditions during long-term running. The combination of inkjet printing method with these materials proposed in this study is convenient, efficient and low cost, and the prepared membranes are versatility, providing novel insights into preparation of high efficiency membranes for oily wastewater treatment .

A modified TA-APTES coating: Endowing porous membranes with uniform, durable superhydrophilicity and outstanding anti-crude oil-adhesion property via one-step process

Yuyang Zhou,Jin Zhang,Zhenxing Wang,Fang He,Shaoqin Peng,Yuexiang Li

Tannic acid (TA)-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coating has excellent hydrophilicity, and can be applied to a variety of materials. But it has poor stability in the air. To improve its stability, we have developed TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating in our previous work, but there are still some problems remained such as tedious steps, and undesirable anti-crude oil-adhesion performance, etc. Besides, both TA-APTES and TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating cannot realize the hydrophilic modification of the inner surfaces of porous polypropylene (PP) membrane. To solve the above mentioned problems, we developed superhydrophilic and stable TA-APTES- tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) coating via one-step process in this study. The new coating can realize the superhydrophilic modification of the inner surfaces of porous PP membrane, and endows the PP membrane with good water permeability, which cannot be realized by our previously reported TA-APTES and TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating. Besides, the stability of the coating is greatly improved by introducing stable alcoholic hydroxyl groups derived from TEOS, and the resultant modified membrane can keep superhydrophilic (CA about 0°) and underwater superhydrophobic (underwater oil CA above 150°) even after being stored in air for more than 6 months, ultrasonic treatment for 10 min, or being rinsed by water for 24 h (3000r/min), exhibiting outstanding stability. More importantly, the crude oil adhesion force of the new coating is as low as 4 μN even under the preload force of 300 μN, showing excellent anti-crude oil-adhesion property. The PP membrane modified by the new coating possesses ultrahigh water flux (10384 L m -2  h -1 bar -1 ) and can realize highly efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsion (above 99%). This work is expected to accelerate the practical application of TA-APTES coating.

Rapid preparation of Tannic acid (TA) based zwitterionic nanofiltration membrane via a multiple layer-by-layer (mLBL) assembly strategy for enhanced antifouling performance

Hengrao Liu,Guanhua Liu,Min Zhang,Hao Zhao,Yanjun Jiang,Jing Gao

Tannic acid (TA) is a promising material to prepare nanofiltration membranes due to its multiple interaction abilities with metal ions and zwitterionic polymer via coordination interaction and electrostatic interaction, respectively. Herein, we proposed a multiple layer-by-layer (mLBL) assembly strategy using three assembly materials for the rapid preparation of TA based zwitterionic nanofiltration membranes with enhanced antifouling performance, which was compared with the non-zwitterionic nanofiltration membranes prepared via the conventional layer-by-layer (cLBL) assembly. Among a series of transition metal ions, Fe 3+ was chosen to prepare nanofiltration membranes. The ATR-FTIR and XPS analysis revealed the TA/Fe 3+ layer was formed and the poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) polymer was successfully assembled on membrane surface. The prepared zwitterionic nanofiltration membranes showed enhanced hydrophilicity, roughness and zeta potential than the non-zwitterionic nanofiltration membranes. The influence of TA/Fe 3+ bilayer number and PSBMA concentration on membrane performance was systematically studied and the rejection properties of the prepared membranes for dyes and salts were also investigated. Under the optimum preparation condition, the zwitterionic (TA/Fe 3+ ) 1.5 /PSBMA membrane showed water permeability of 40.36 LMH/bar with rose bengal (RB) rejection more than 98% and Na 2 SO 4 rejection about 60%. Because of the introduction of the PSBMA polymer, the zwitterionic (TA/Fe 3+ ) 1.5 /PSBMA membrane showed better antifouling performance than non-zwitterionic (TA/Fe 3+ ) 2.5 membrane with similar rejection properties.

Preparation of Cu2+/TA/HAP composite coating with anti-bacterial and osteogenic potential on 3D-printed porous Ti alloy scaffolds for orthopedic applications

Xu Haitao,Li Siyuan,Guo Sutong,Guo Yu,Xu Peirong,Wang Ling,Ding Yujian,Feng Dehong

Because of stress shielding effects, traditional titanium (Ti) alloy scaffolds have a high elastic modulus, which might promote looseness and bone disintegration surrounding the implant, increasing the likelihood of a second surgery. In contrast, 3D-printed porous Ti alloy scaffolds can reduce the scaffold weight while enhancing biocompatibility. Further, these scaffolds’ porous nature allows bone tissue ingrowth as well as strong pore connectivity, which can improve nutrient absorption. Nevertheless, bare Ti alloy implants may fail because of inadequate bone integration; hence, adding a coating on the implant surface is an effective technique for improving implant stability. In this study, a composite coating comprising hydroxyapatite (HAP), chitosan (CS), tannic acid (TA) and copper ions (Cu 2+ ) (Cu 2+ /TA/HAP composite coating) was prepared on the surface of 3D printed porous Ti alloy scaffolds using electrophoretic deposition. Using the standard plate count method, Live/Dead bacteria staining assay, FITC Phalloidin and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining assay, and live/dead staining of cells we determined that the composite coating has better antibacterial properties and cytocompatibility as well as lower cytotoxicity. The Alkaline Phosphatase assay revealed that the coating results showed good osteogenesis potential. Overall, the composite coatings produced in this investigation give new potential for the application of Ti alloys in clinics.

Ge optimized electron environments of binary alloy active phase loaded on nGeNi/TA catalyst to match n-ethylcarbazole orbitals to boost hydrogen storage processes

Fei Fan,Xiaodi Zhu,Jiacan Kang,Zhenyu Song,Jianwei Liu,Hailong Wang,Anning Zhou,Houxiang Sun,Zhiping Chen,Wenwu Zhou

Developing high-performance non-precious metal catalysts for liquid organic hydrogen storage is crucial for advancing hydrogen energy technologies. Herein, we proposed a strategy in which doped Ge promoters optimized electron environments of nGeNi active phase loaded on titanium-aluminum composite oxide support with highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesopores (nGeNi/TA, n = 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 wt%), successfully establishing electron-rich active phase with high matching to HOMO orbital of N-Ethylcarbazole (NEC) molecule. Meanwhile, both d-band center of active phase and electron densities of its conduction band were effectively adjusted. These improvements not only retained ability of nGeNi active phase to activate NEC and its intermediates, but also suitably weakened strong π-d interaction with their aromatic rings. Consequently, adsorption energy of each intermediate species was almost close to average energy of hydrogenation conversion stages, thereby decreasing desorption energy of complete hydrogenation product (12H). Compared with 0GeNi/TA catalyst, NEC conversion rate on the best 1GeNi/TA catalyst at low temperature (220℃) greatly increased by approximately 118 %, and 12H selectivity and its yield sharply improved by approximately 112 % and 132 %, respectively. Moreover, excessive accumulations of intermediate species were also effectively mitigated.
