The Role of Hydroxyl Modification of Peptidoglycan to Reduce the TTX Toxicity via Superior Absorption

Chang’e Wang,Yi Guo,Lili Zhang,Junjian Miao,Ying Lu

The by-products that may contain tetrodotoxin (TTX) produced during the processing of farmed pufferfish have caused food safety risks and environmental pollution. Peptidoglycan (PG) of lactic acid bacteria could adsorb TTX; however, its complex structure and poor solubility limited adsorption efficiency. In this study, hydroxyl modifications of three PGs (A3α, A1γ and A4α) were realized via TEMPO-mediated selective oxidation of the primary hydroxyl group. Compared with PGs, it was found that the carboxyl density of hydroxyl-modified PGs (HM-PGs) increased from 1.66 mmol/g to 3.33 mmol/g and the surface electronegativity increased from −36 mV to −59 mV. The adsorption capacity of HM-PGs to TTX reached 1.48 μg/mg, which was comparable to the adsorption of the conventional adsorbent chitosan for aflatoxin B1 (1.39 μg/mg). Moreover, HM-PGs decreased the toxicity of TTX from strong toxic to nearly non-toxic, with the toxicity reduction rate reached 99.85%. After treatment with HM-PGs, the mouse hippocampus and neuronal cell model confirmed that lower neural injury and sodium channel blocking effects were observed in the residual TTX, whose neurotoxicity was lower. Molecular docking simulation and physicochemical analysis revealed that the adsorption of TTX by HM-PGs was a complex adsorption mode driven by the synergy of physicochemical interaction. There were both physical adsorptions based on electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and chemical binding with strong hydrogen bonding (1.46 Å) and Mayer bond order (0.1229). This study not only developed a new, efficient and safe tool for TTX removal, but also provided a theoretical basis for the development of biological toxin removal material.

Fabrication of Colorful Superhydrophobic Coatings Based on Nanocellulose With Oil/Water Separation and Self-Cleaning Properties

Chenghua Yu,Yujing Mo,Jie Zhou,Zikeng Qiu,Yating Wang

Lack of color diversity results in the limited application of most superhydrophobic materials. Nanocellulose, a renewable biomass material with wide sources and excellent properties, has garnered significant research interest in superhydrophobic areas. Its excellent colorability provides favorable conditions for constructing colorful superhydrophobic materials. In this study, we introduced a method for fabricating colorful nanocellulose-based superhydrophobic coatings. Nanocellulose was dyed and constructed into micron–nanometer composite structure particles, which were modified by silanization and finally obtained colorful nanocellulose particles with superhydrophobicity. Then, the modified particles were mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) proportionally to formulate the coatings, which could be sprayed on filter papers to obtain the colorful superhydrophobic surface. This coating could draw a variety of colorful patterns and exhibit self-cleaning properties with water contact angle of 156.6°. Because of its special surface wettability, colorful superhydrophobic coatings could also be used to efficiently separate oil–water mixtures. In addition, the obtained coatings also had good durability. After 70 frictions by the weights, the contact angle was still maintained at 150.7°. This preparation method was simple and mild preserving the inherent advantages of nanocellulose and introducing a diversity of colors. It offered a novel approach to personalized and multifaceted applications of superhydrophobic materials. Graphical Schematic illustration of the fabrication process for nanocellulose-based colored superhydrophobic coatings.

Light-Induced Efficient Hydrogen Peroxide Production Mediated by an Integrated Catalytic Microenvironment on Carbon Quantum Dots

Xiguo Zhang,Lin Ma,Shihu Ding,Nuo Meng,Wei Wang

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) has emerged as a promising strategy for boosting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production through the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). To achieve efficient H2O2 production, a specific C═N–NH–C═O structure was engineered on CQDs through Schiff-base addition reaction, creating an ideal catalytic microenvironment within the molecule via the integration of a proton donor and oxygen adsorption site. Benefiting from that, the obtained benzohydrazide-modified CQDs (BD-CQDs) exhibited a H2O2 production efficiency of 1562 μmol g–1 h–1 even without an external oxygen supply and electron donor, nearly three times that of the pristine CQDs. Mechanism investigation verified that oxygen adsorption shifted from a side-on type to an end-on type after modification, and the O═O bond was stretched on the C═O adjacent to −NH–, improving H2O2 selectivity to 92.5%. Identification of active sites revealed that −NH– provided sustainable proton flux for PCET, while the C═N bridge boosted the charge separation and transfer. Owing to the spatial proximity within the integrated catalytic microenvironment, the proton transfer energy barrier was significantly decreased, thermodynamically favoring H2O2 production. BD-CQDs retained an efficiency of over 88% after five successive cycles or in an ionic environment, highlighting their practical application potential in photocatalytic energy conversion.

Electron-rich Cuδ+-O-Con+ boosts active site reconfiguration to trigger multi-pathway C-O bond hydrogenolysis activation in lignin

Zong-Pin Fu,Qi-Jie Zhou,Yun-Peng Zhao,Yu-Fa Wu,Fang-Jing Liu,Mei Zhong,Jian Li,Jing Liang,Jing-Pei Cao

The abundant bridging bonds and side chains in lignin make the selective cleavage of its C-O bonds a promising approach for achieving efficient conversion. Herein, Cu/CoOx-CeO 2 catalysts were prepared and the effects of their physical and chemical structures on C-O bond hydrogenolysis activity were investigated. The results indicated that incorporating an appropriate amount of CeO 2 as a support facilitated the doping of Co n+ cations into the CeO 2 lattice, enhancing oxygen vacancy concentration. Additionally, the Cu K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra revealed that Cu exists in a mixed valence state (Cu δ+ , 0 < δ < 2) within the catalyst. Reaction pathway regulation was achieved through strategic modulation of reaction conditions. When isopropanol was used as the solvent under a N 2 atmosphere, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol (2-PPE-ol) was completely converted at 180 °C within 2 h, yielding ethylbenzene and cyclohexanol with 100 % selectivity. Conversely, when n -hexane was employed as the solvent, dehydrogenation of the C α -OH group generated hydrogen radicals, which promoted cleavage of the C β -O bond in the β-O-4 ketone intermediate, resulting in phenol and 1-phenylethanol with 100 % selectivity. Isotopic labeling and active hydrogen tracking experiments revealed that the active hydrogen in catalyst transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) originated from the solvent, whereas self-hydrogen-transfer hydrogenolysis (SHTH) relied on hydrogen derived from the C α -OH group of 2-PPE-ol. This work provides valuable insights into the directional conversion of lignin into high-value chemicals and efficient energy utilization.

Dynamic covalent bond-mediated suppression of phase segregation in wide-bandgap perovskites

Xiyue Wang,Na Wang,Xinyu Yuan,Mengyao Guo,Jinling Zhang,Yanlin Song,Ziqiu Ren

Phase segregation triggered by illumination is a typical stimulus response in wide-bandgap perovskites, and addressing it is vital for overcoming the stability bottleneck of perovskite devices by mitigating phase segregation and implementing dynamic management. To tackle this, a dynamic covalent bond-mediated approach is proposed to deal with phase segregation in wide-bandgap perovskites. Results show that adding dynamic disulfide and diselenide bonds effectively suppresses phase segregation while keeping halogen homogeneity. A 1.77 eV wide-bandgap perovskite device attains a peak conversion efficiency of 21.02% and retains over 90% of its initial efficiency after 1200 h of continuous illumination at the maximum power point. A fabricated perovskite/perovskite tandem device reaches an optimal conversion efficiency of 28.45%. Incorporating dynamic covalent bonds presents a new strategy for mitigating phase segregation in wide-bandgap perovskites and is expected to drive further progress in this area.

The application of dual-function ionic liquids-hydrogel in the bidirectional non-interference effect of benzoylurea insecticides extraction and dye degradation

Hongmei Liu,Boyue Zheng,Zhengxue Ge,Mengyun Liu,Caihong Tao,Fangbin Fan

The analysis and treatment of hazardous substances in food have long been constrained by the dual challenges of limited single-target recognition capability and low resource utilization efficiency. To overcome these limitations, this study developed an ionic liquid-hydrogel material using a polymerization technique. The material featured a stable porous nanostructure and exhibited dual functionality, enabling highly efficient photo-catalytic degradation and adsorptive extraction. Under optimized conditions, it achieved a degradation rate of over 90 % for the dye Amaranth and extraction recovery exceeding 85 % for three benzoylurea pesticides. Mechanistic studies using in-situ IR spectroscopy revealed that the material's efficient and synergistic pretreatment capability for the two distinct classes of pollutants was attributed to the high substrate specificity of its active sites, which ensured that the two pathways operated independently without interference, guaranteeing the reliability of the treatment process. In conclusion, the developed dual-functional material combining with the advantages of low cost, ease of preparation and environmental friendliness provided an innovative strategy for the simultaneous pretreatment of multiple food contaminants and represented a significant advancement in this field.

Photoinduced passivation-directed growth of δ-MnO2 nanosheets with excellent hydrophilicity for advanced pervaporation desalination membranes

Runzhang Tao,Jian Lu,Shilong Li,Weihu Zhang,Zhongkai Shan,Yuqing Sun,Wenheng Jing

Designing stable, high-performance two-dimensional (2D) MnO 2 membranes for pervaporation (PV) desalination remains challenging. Herein, we present a photoinduced surface passivation strategy for the controlled growth of ultrathin single-layer δ-MnO 2 nanosheets, combined with layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate robust PV membranes. The e − / h +  dual-path mechanism of photoinduced synthesis of MnO 2 was firstly proposed. Comprehensive structural characterizations and DFT simulations reveal that h +  drives surface passivation stabilizes the thermodynamic configuration, while e − modulating growth kinetics to achieve narrow lateral size distributions of nanosheets. Moreover, the process generates Mn 3+ states (Mn (III) ≈ 49.96 %), abundant oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyls, imparting exceptional hydrophilicity (water contact angle ≈ 10°) and enabling ultrafast water transport through the 2D channels during PV. The resulting MnO 2 membranes exhibit nearly complete salt rejection (99.9 %) and an impressive water flux of 36.53 kg m −2  h −1 in high-salinity feeds, outperforming state-of-the-art membranes. This work establishes photoinduced facet passivation as an effective route for precision-controlled growth of 2D nanosheets, opening promising avenues for next-generation PV membranes and other water purification technologies in harsh environments.

Truss-inspired ultra-high strength, fire-safe, and thermal insulating double-crosslinked wood aerogels

Yue Xu,Shuhui Liang,Wanying Wang,Chentao Yan,Lubin Liu,Dawei Jiang,Min Hong,Miaojun Xu,Bin Li,Siqi Huo

Bio-based wood aerogel is one of the most promising materials to replace traditional petrochemical-based insulation materials. However, the flammability and poor mechanical strength of bio-based wood aerogels limit their applications in emerging fields. Inspired by a truss-supporting system, this study prepared a multifunctional bio-based cross-linked wood aerogel (TSP@Ca) by a dual hydrogen-ionic bonding strategy involving an oxidized wood cellulose framework, sodium alginate, phytic acid (PA), and Ca 2+ . Finite element simulation and mechanical analysis indicated that the multi-point support structure, resembling a truss framework, formed in the oxidized wood template significantly improved the strength of TSP@Ca aerogel (9.99 MPa), with a 154.84% enhancement relative to that of oxidized delignified wood (TODW). The limiting oxygen index of TSP@Ca3 aerogel was as high as 43.3%, and it can extinguish immediately when the fire was removed. The introduction of PA and Ca 2+ promoted the dehydration, cross-linking, and charring of TSP@Ca aerogel, while the produced phosphorus-containing free radicals played an inhibitory role in the gas phase. Therefore, the peak of heat release rate of TSP@Ca aerogel was 80.66% lower than that of TODW, showing excellent fire safety. Benefiting from the complex heat conduction path and enhanced interface resistance, the thermal conductivity of TSP@Ca was 46.4% lower than that of TODW. The resulting aerogel combines ultra-high mechanical strength, excellent fire resistance, and thermal insulation, aligning with “green” development goals and offering broad application potential in construction, rail transport, and new energy sectors.

Programmable and multi-stimuli responsive hydrogel actuator mediated by nanocellulose with intrinsic self-sensing capacity

Ya Lu,Shengnan Li,Fang Deng,Yiying Yue,Shuijian He,Shaohua Jiang,Mingqiang Ye,Yihui Zhou,Huining Xiao,Jingquan Han

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels demonstrate tremendous potential in soft robotics and flexible wearable electronics owing to their response capability when exposed to external stimuli. Nevertheless, the development of a multi-stimuli responsive, remotely actuated, programmable hydrogel with intrinsic self-sensing properties remains a significant challenge. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR) light/thermal/magnetic multi-responsive hydrogel actuator based on delignified wood (DW) embedded Fe 3 O 4 /liquid metal/(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl-oxidized cellulose nanofiber-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (Fe 3 O 4 /LM/TOCN-PNIPAM) hydrogel is fabricated. TOCNs facilitate both homogeneous dispersion of functional fillers and robust interfacial binding between the hydrogel and DW. The anisotropic structure of DW endows the hydrogel actuator with programmable shape-morphing capability. The hydrogel actuator with bending velocity of 300° s −1 under thermal activation and 7.5° s −1 under NIR light stimulation can be used as a soft gripper for object manipulation. In addition, the light/magnetic responsive hydrogel actuators with electrical conductivity (3.7 S m −1 ) possess precise remote controllability and can be used as intelligent switches. When driven remotely by NIR light and magnetic field, the conductive hydrogel can generate corresponding electrical signals, thereby providing real-time feedback on its own movement. This integrated material system, combining multi-responsive actuation with real-time sensory, establishes a new paradigm for developing next-generation intelligent soft robotics with self-regulatory control.

Nanocellulose-based covalent organic framework composite nanofiltration membranes based on multidimensional assembly and click modification: synergistic regulation of permeation flux and rejection rate

Yunfeng Guo,Weihua Gong,Jiayu Liu,Xiangyu Tang,Dong Wang,Zefang Xiao,Yanjun Xie,Yonggui Wang

Traditional COF nanosheets (CONs) suffer from poor mechanical properties due to weak interactions, which limits their widespread application in water treatment. This study proposes a multidimensional assembly strategy by combining them with one-dimensional cellulose nanofibrils (1D-TCNFs) to fabricate a multidimensional composite nanofiltration membrane. In this structure, the flexible TCNFs not only enhance the stability of the composite membrane but also significantly improve the membrane’s flux and rejection efficiency through enhanced pore size exclusion effects and charge synergistic mechanisms. Specifically, two-dimensional covalent organic framework nanosheets (2D-CONs) were synthesized using a sodium chloride interface confinement technique, and the CONs were further modified with sulfonic acid groups (SCONs) via thiol-ene click chemistry, significantly improving the hydrophilicity and pore structure of the nanosheets. Separation tests demonstrated that the T 75% SCONs membrane achieved a rejection rate of over 99 % for RhB filtration, with a permeation flux increase of 209 % compared to the T 75% CONs membrane. For inorganic salt MgSO 4 , the permeation flux increased by 187 %, with a rejection rate of 40.3 %. Long-term stability tests also showed that the T 75% SCONs membrane maintained excellent performance over multiple filtration cycles. In conclusion, the multidimensional assembled nanofiltration membrane based on sodium chloride interface confinement synthesis and click modification provides a novel solution for developing efficient water treatment technologies.

Insights into the Fenton-like degradation efficiency and mechanism of phenolic pollutants by Cu-doped sludge-based biochar catalyst

Rushuo Yang,Qi Liu,Zhe Liu,Jiaxuan Wang,Aining Zhang,Yongjun Liu

To effectively degrade phenolic pollutants, metal Cu was incorporated into sludge-based biochar (SBC), thereby creating a Fenton-like catalyst designated as Cu/SBC. This catalyst was combined with H 2 O 2 to establish a Fenton-like reaction system specifically designed for the catalytic degradation of phenol. In the experiment, the degradation efficiency of phenol was used as the evaluation index, and the optimal preparation conditions of Cu/SBC were screened. The results demonstrated that in Cu/SBC, SBC could be used as a carrier for electron transfer, while the addition of Cu was the key to enhance the performance of the catalyst. Under the catalysis of Cu/SBC, phenol in the concentration range of 100–350 mg/L were effectively degraded, achieving a 100 % degradation efficiency within 20 min. The physical and chemical characterization revealed that the surface of the material was uniformly covered with metal groups and a variety of functional groups, resulting in a porous structure with more abundant cavities, larger specific surface area and higher adsorbed oxygen content than the original sludge. The reaction mechanism analysis revealed that free radicals (such as •OH, •O 2 − , etc.) were produced in the Cu/SBC-H 2 O 2 Fenton reaction system, with •OH being the primary radical responsible for phenol degradation. In addition, a variety of intermediate products of phenol degradation were detected, and the possible mechanism of phenol degradation in this kind of Fenton system was proposed. In conclusion, the catalyst developed in this study exhibits excellent catalytic performance and provides valuable insights for research on the degradation of phenolic wastewater.

High-efficiency photocatalytic degradation of multiple quinolone antibiotics using a hybrid heterojunction with synergistic doping of boron and bismuth

Han Sun,Yonghao Dong,Lei Wang,Xudong Wang,Junwei Xin,Huihui Zhang,Jie Ren,Licheng Chen,Ruosong Jing

The practical application of conventional photocatalytic technologies in aquatic environmental remediation is significantly limited by rapid charge recombination and insufficient redox capacity. Theoretical calculations and experimental characterization confirmed that the synergistic co-doping of boron (B) and bismuth (Bi) induced tailored modifications to the band structures and Fermi level potential of g-C 3 N 4 (CN) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS), respectively, successfully transforming the type-II CN/ZIS heterojunction into an S-scheme B-doped CN/Bi-doped ZIS (BCN/BZIS) heterojunction. The subsequent integration of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S (CZS) into the BCN/BZIS heterojunction introduced additional type-II and S-scheme photogenerated carrier transfer pathways, thereby establishing a hybrid BCN/BZIS/CZS heterojunction. This configuration exhibited exceptional reduction capacity and optimized photogenerated carrier separation and migration efficiency, leading to excellent degradation performance for gatifloxacin ((26.89 ± 1.94) × 10 −2  min −1 ), sparfloxacin ((10.48 ± 2.03) × 10 −2  min −1 ), moxifloxacin ((8.43 ± 1.02) × 10 −2  min −1 ), and gemifloxacin ((4.13 ± 0.13) × 10 −2  min −1 ). The degradation disparities among these quinolone antibiotics were systematically elucidated through analyses of steric hindrance, frontier molecular orbital energies, Mulliken charge distribution, reaction sites, and active species contribution rates. This study offers guidance for the systematic development of heterojunction photocatalysts to address fluoroquinolone pharmaceutical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.
