For planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs), tin oxide (SnO 2 ) is a perfect electron transport material. However, owing to nanoparticle agglomeration and defects, the advantages of SnO 2 cannot be effectively utilized. Herein, a cationic surfactant , benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is introduced into SnO 2 precursor solution to prevent the aggregation of SnO 2 . Thus, a uniform and free of pinhole SnO 2 electron transport layer (ETL) is obtained, which supports the formation of high-quality perovskite layer (PVK). The introduction of BAC adjusts the energy level of ETL and improves the electron transport in the buried interface. Moreover, the BAC-modification reduces and passivates the defects on the surface of SnO 2 and perovskite films. Consequently, BAC-modified PSCs achieves a champion efficiency of 23.49 % with an impressive fill factor of 84.50 %. The unpackaged device maintains an initial efficiency of 91.4 % after 1000 h of storage in dark at 25 ± 5 °C and 25 ± 5 % relative humidity.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites have garnered increasing attention due to their unique physical properties and potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Introducing chiral organic ligands into layered inorganic frameworks can impart strong chirality to pure 2D perovskites, offering the potential for applications in circularly polarized light emission and detection. However, most of them are lead-based chiral perovskites, which inherit the toxicity of lead. To overcome the toxicity limitations, lead-free chiral perovskites have been developed by using manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), bismuth (Bi), and tin (Sn). Among these alternatives, tin (Sn) has emerged as the most promising candidate because tin and lead both have similar ionic radii and valence electron structures. Nevertheless, the study of 2D tin-based chiral perovskite is still in fancy. Here, we report a new two-dimensional tin-based chiral perovskite (S-/R-3BrMBA)2SnI4 [3BrMBA = 1-(3-bromphenyl)-ethylamine] with a high degree of circularly polarized light emission. The as-synthesized 2D tin-based chiral perovskite (S-3BrMBA)2SnI4 shows an average (maximum) degree of circular polarization (DOCP) of 26.2% (35.8%) at 78 K, which is the highest value in lead-free chiral perovskites reported to date and might be ascribed to the large lattice distortion induced by the chiral ligands. The DOCP decreases with increasing temperature and maintains a constant value with the excitation power. The high DOCP in our pure chiral 2D perovskites would shed light on the development and exploration of lead-free spin-associated optoelectronic devices.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) have the potential application in building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV). 0D tin-based perovskites are a promising embedding phosphor in LSC due to the large Stokes shift and high photoluminescence quantum yield. But the instability and uncontrollable crystal growth are severe limiting their successful utilization in device fabrication. To tackle these issues, double-shell encapsulated configurations are presented, soft ligands of hypophosphorous acid and hard-shell of hollow mesoporous silica are simultaneously suppressing the oxidation of Sn 2+ and restricting crystal growth within nano-matrix. The stable phosphor is subsequently embedded into LSC for harvesting solar energy and the resulting output power efficiently drives the combined electrochromic glass under natural light. These fabricated devices also offer the self-adaptable switch on/off functionality to regulate light absorption with variable solar irradiation intensity in real time. This approach is anticipated to open new avenues for utilizing lead-free perovskite nanomaterials in self-powered smart windows for BIPV.

Summary An appropriate electron transport layer (ETL) with better energy alignment and enhanced charge transfer, thereby helping efficient extraction and transport of photogenerated carriers, is essential to achieve the creation of high-performance devices. In this work, we use functionalized MXene modified with fluoroalkylsilane and dodecyltrimethoxysilane molecules, denoted as SnO 2 -MF and SnO 2 -MH, as nanosheet dopants in the SnO 2 ETL. From density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) spectra, we see that better band alignment is achieved for the SnO 2 -MH ETL. Meanwhile, functionalized MXene nanosheets represent high electrical conductivity and mobility and could form zero Schottky barrier heterojunction with SnO 2 , effectively and rapidly enhancing carrier transfer. Finally, the suitable surface energy achieved by functionalized MXene additives can enlarge the grain size of perovskite thin films. Consequently, a significant improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 20.98% to 23.66% (24.12% for the champion device with a fill factor [FF] over 0.84) can be achieved for devices based on the SnO 2 -MH ETL, which also possess improved moisture resistance and operational stability.

We prepare a series of two-dimensional (2D) tin-based perovskite (RNH2)2SnBr4 with different carbon chains. All of them have extra-large Stokes shifts, broad emission, and ultralong PL lifetimes. The PLQYs of (C8H17NH2)2SnBr4 and (OAm)2SnBr4 powders reach up to 54 and 60%, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and experimental results reveal that the properties of 2D Sn-based perovskites may originate from self-trapped excitons, which result from excited-state structural deformation. The results show that the [SnBr6]4– octahedron distorted by the carbon chain with arrangement distortion changes the photophysical properties of 2D tin-based perovskite. Furthermore, (OAm)2SnBr4 powders are used to engineer UV pumped light-emitting diodes. This work provides new strategies for the preparation of environmentally friendly perovskite materials.

Multifunctional SnSe-based platforms are vital for next-generation integrated optoelectronics. Herein, we demonstrate Fe-doped SnSe nanosheets concurrently exhibiting enhanced photoresponse and room-temperature ferromagnetism. The Fe2+ dopants introduce sub-band trapping states and facilitate lattice contraction, which synergistically suppress charge recombination and promote charge separation. Systematic PEC measurements reveal that the Fe-doped SnSe photodetector (Sn0.95Fe0.05Se) exhibits a significantly enhanced photoresponse compared to pristine SnSe. In 0.5 M KOH, Sn0.95Fe0.05Se-based photodetector reaches 115.29 μA W–1 responsivity and 4.39 × 1010 Jones detectivity (420 nm, 0.6 V), roughly 4.8- and 3.8-fold higher than pristine SnSe, respectively. Furthermore, under 420 nm illumination, the device demonstrates a fast photoresponse (τres/τrec = 0.22/0.11 s) and robust 6000 s stability under white light at 0.6 V. This work elucidates the role of Fe2+ ions in modulating carrier dynamics and inducing high-temperature ferromagnetism (Tc ≈ 885 K), offering insights into SnSe-based bifunctional optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Calcite (CaCO3), one of the main impurities, has an uncertain effect on the volatilization behavior of tin oxide in the tin-bearing iron ore concentrates during the selective reduction volatilization process. In this study, natural calcite powders were added into the tin-bearing iron ore concentrates to investigate tin volatilization behavior affected by CaCO3 under different roasting temperature, CO content, and roasting time. In addition, the effect of CaCO3 on the phase transformation of SnO2 was determined using XRD, SEM-EDS combined with thermodynamics calculation. The results indicated that CaCO3 had a significantly adverse effect on the Sn volatilization ratio, because Ca2SnO4 was easily formed under CO-CO2 atmosphere. It was also found from the study that the generation of SnO(s) was the most critical intermediate for promoting the formation of Ca2SnO4.

All-perovskite tandem solar cells (APTSCs) have rapidly improved in both power conversion efficiency (PCE) and room-temperature stability. However, achieving device stability under combined light–heat stresses (ISOS-L-3 conditions) remains challenging. The critical limitation stems from the highly reactive tin–lead surface which, even with molecular passivation strategies, remains susceptible to severe photothermal degradation. Here we develop a targeted conversion strategy to transform the metastable surface into a solid protection layer. Our method relies on treatment with alkaline caesium hydroxide, which releases OH − to mediate the dual transformation of SnI 4 and the defective surface into solid metal oxides, as well as replacing volatile organic cations with Cs + . This strategy leads to improved stability under ISOS-L-3 testing conditions and overall optoelectronic performance. The resulting tin–lead cells achieve a champion PCE of 23.65%, enabling the corresponding APTSCs to reach a PCE of 29.52% (certified, 28.56%). The APTSCs retain 90.3% of their initial PCE after 500 h under ISOS-L-3 conditions, outperforming traditional amine-treated counterparts. Our findings demonstrate a promising pathway towards photothermally stable and efficient APTSCs.

Analogous to black phosphorus, SnS processes folded structure that shows a strongly anisotropic optical absorption. Herein, by using ultrafast two-color pump and probe spectroscopy, the azimuthal angle dependence of nonlinear optical anisotropy in SnS is investigated. After 390 nm photoexcitation, the reflectivity of the 780 nm probe beam is first reduced significantly, followed by a complex alternation with the rotation of the sample along the c-axis. The relaxation of reflectivity consisted of two components: a 1–3 ps fast process that shows azimuthal angle and pump fluence dependence, which arises from electron–phonon coupling. The slow process shows strongly azimuthal angle dependence, which arises from the recovery of a photoinduced structural change, i.e., from the photoinduced metastable state with Cmcm-like symmetry to the initial state with Pnma symmetry. In addition, a coherent acoustic phonon with a frequency of 40 GHz is also identified, which originates from the temperature gradient-induced strain wave in the SnS crystal.

The development of high-performance narrow-bandgap tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is fundamental to surpassing the Shockley-Queisser limit via all-perovskite tandem configurations. Nevertheless, the vulnerability of Sn 2+ to oxidation in Sn-Pb perovskite films and devices remains a formidable obstacle to achieving superior film quality and competitive power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we introduce a bio-inspired antioxidant engineering strategy employing gallic acid (GA) as a dopant and tannic acid (TA) as a surface passivator to separately stabilize the perovskite bulk and interface. GA, a small antioxidant molecule, localizes at the grain boundaries to impart oxidation resistance and suppress the formation of excess SnI 2 impurities. TA, with its larger molecular framework, resides at the film surface to form a robust passivation layer that hinders oxygen intrusion while establishing a dipole that facilitates interfacial charge transfer. The dual-molecule synergy significantly enhances film oxidative stability against both intrinsic (precursor degradation) and extrinsic (neutral oxygen and superoxide) stimuli. Consequently, the Sn-Pb PSCs achieve a champion PCE of 23.46%, enabling a remarkable 29.95% (certified 29.44%) efficiency in monolithic all-perovskite tandems.

TiN–TiB 2 –hBN ceramic composites were prepared using nitride boronisation with TiN–B as the raw material. The bulk samples exhibited layered structures through secondary reactions at higher temperatures. In the outer layer of the bulk sample, hBN was consumed, and the content of the hard phase (TiB 2 ) increased because of the secondary reaction, which increased the hardness of the outer layer to 20.54 GPa, i.e., 68.64% higher than that of the inner layer (12.18 GPa). In addition, the mechanical properties of TiN–TiB 2 –hBN ceramic composites with a layered structure were not adversely affected by the higher sintering temperature: the bulk sample maintained a high bending strength of 477 MPa, and the fracture toughness was improved to 4.02 MPa m 1/2 by twins and stacking dislocations.

Abstract Low-dimensional hybrid metal halides (MHs) have attracted considerable attention for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to their outstanding optical properties. However, the toxicity of lead-based hybrid MHs and the poor stability of Sn2+-based counterparts limit their applications. Herein, we rationally designed a zero-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid tin halide, (4-IBA)2SnCl6, where the spatially isolated [SnCl6]2– octahedra were completely separated by 4-IBA+ organic cations, exhibiting stable broadband warm-white emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 24.26%. Combined spectroscopic investigations and density functional theory calculations revealed pronounced exciton localization and strong electron–phonon coupling, inducing the self-trapped exciton emission. Benefiting from the intrinsic oxidation resistance of Sn4+, (4-IBA)2SnCl6 demonstrated markedly enhanced environmental stability compared with conventional Sn2+-based hybrid MHs. Furthermore, a UV-pumped WLED based on the as-prepared phosphor was successfully fabricated, exhibiting Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage coordinates close to the standard white-light region and a high color rendering index of 91.2. This work provides an effective strategy for developing stable, lead-free, single-component white light-emitting tin halide phosphors.
