The treatment of oil spill and the separation of oil-water mixture have been widely concerned in recent years. In this work, a one-pot synthesis strategy is developed to prepare fluorine functionalized zirconium-based metal organic framework (Zr-MOFs) (denoted as UiO-66-1F) by using 4-fluorobenzoic acid as modulator and modifier and p-phthalic acid (PTA) as ligand. 4-fluorobenzoic acid can participate in the formation of frameworks structure and cause structural defects, causing larger surface area and hierarchically porous structure. The hydrophobicity of UiO-66-1F increases with increasing of the ratio of 4-fluorobenzoic acid to zirconium chloride and when the ratio is 10, the synthesized UiO-66-1F(10) shows high hydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 122° while the WCA of original UiO-66 is only 21°. UiO-66-1F(10) also has good chemical stability over a wide pH range (pH 1∼11) and good hydrothermal stability. In addition, a superhydrophobic sponge (UiO-66-1F(10)@PDA@sponge) with a WCA of 150° was prepared via in situ growth of UiO-66-1F(10) on a polydopamine modified sponge (PDA@sponge). The resulting composite shows high absorption capacities for various oils and organic solvents ranging from 50.5 g/g (n-hexane)– 107.8 g/g (dichloromethane) and good recyclability.

The persistence and removal of antibiotic residues in aquatic environments represent a global environmental challenge. In this study, a novel ternary Bi 2 WO 6 /UiO-66/AgI heterojunction photocatalyst was designed and constructed for the deep removal of tetracycline (TC). AgI nanoparticles and Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets were in situ anchored onto a porous UiO-66 framework, successfully integrating high adsorption capacity, visible-light response, and efficient charge separation. It was demonstrated that the composite, when exposed to visible light, exhibited a significantly enhanced level of TC degradation activity in comparison with its single- and binary-component counterparts. Mechanistic investigations revealed that UiO-66 not only served as an adsorptive substrate to concentrate pollutants but also functioned as an electron transfer mediator, promoting a direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway between Bi 2 WO 6 and AgI. This configuration effectively suppressed charge-carrier recombination and enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species ·O 2 − , ·OH and h + ). The proposed reaction pathway was confirmed by radical-trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Additionally, this composite material demonstrated favourable performance in stability and toxicity assessments. This work provides a new design concept for metal–organic framework-based composite photocatalysts and elucidates their potential application in synergistic adsorption–photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water treatment. Passive radiative cooling provides a sustainable, zero-energy cooling pathway, yet it faces a fundamental challenge in humid or cloudy conditions due to the blockage of the atmospheric transparency window and increased downward atmospheric radiation. Herein, we present a hierarchical Janus bilayer metafabric (TS/PLU) that synergistically combines radiative and evaporative cooling for thermal management with humidity resilience. Integrating a hydrophobic TPU/h-SiO 2 reflection layer with a hygroscopic PAN/LiCl@UiO-66 regulation layer achieves superior solar reflectance (>96%), high atmospheric-window emissivity (96.6%), and moisture capture and evaporation. Crucially, a “harvest-storage-release” mechanism is enabled by UiO-66-confined LiCl, mitigating deliquescence and salt leakage while facilitating heat dissipation even when radiative power is attenuated by high humidity. Asymmetric wettability ensures unidirectional water transport, preserving the radiative function of the hydrophobic top layer. Outdoor tests demonstrate a maximum sub-ambient temperature reduction of 13.4°C under sunny conditions, with a net radiative cooling power of 132.87 W m −2 . The LiCl@UiO-66 incorporation contributes an additional 5.1°C cooling enhancement relative to non-hygroscopic controls. Combined with mechanical robustness (≈370% elongation) and washing durability, this multimodal strategy offers a material-level proof of concept for thermal management featuring humidity resilience and shows potential relevance to personal cooling, outdoor thermal protection, and building-envelope cooling.

Quercetin (Qu), a naturally occurring flavonoid, is critically involved in sustaining human physiological health. Therefore, it is imperative to rationally design a proficient electrochemical sensor capable of sensing Qu. Herein, a ternary nanocomposite composed of Keggin-type polyoxometalate (PMo 12 ), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and zirconium-based MOF (UiO-66-NH 2 ) was successfully fabricated to develop a sensitive electrochemical sensor for Qu determination. Benefiting from the synergistic integration of diverse components, the high conductivity of CNTs, good electrocatalytic performance of PMo 12 , and favorable adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH 2 jointly facilitated the adsorption and electron transfer process of Qu at the electrode interface. The constructed sensor showed a broad linear detection range of 10–160 μM, high detection sensitivity reaching 0.226 μA·μM −1 , and a detection limit as low as 0.486 μM (S/N = 3) at the optimized working conditions. Besides, the developed sensor exhibited outstanding selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. By determining the Qu content in Flos Sophorae Immaturus samples, we further confirmed the actual application capability of the constructed sensor. Satisfactory recoveries of 97.01%–101.08% were obtained, which strongly validated the reliability and accuracy of the proposed electrode for practical Qu analysis.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) exhibit great prospect for He/CH 4 separation. However, it is still restricted by interfacial incompatibility-induced low filler loading and selectivity loss. This study proposed an interface fusion strategy by 6FDA-TFMB (PI) functionalized CF 3 -UiO-66 through NH 2 -UiO-66 bridging to achieve dual regulation of interface compatibility and molecular sieving. Crucially, this interface fusion strategy allowed a substantial increase in filler loading to 20 wt%, representing a 100% improvement over unfunctionalized CF 3 -UiO-66. The covalent bond formed between the amino group and the dianhydride improved the interfacial compatibility. The –CF 3 group on the UiO-66 reduced the pore size of UiO-66 and weaken the adsorption of CH 4 . The dual synergistic effect made the resultant MMMs exhibited excellent He permeability (165.2 Barrer) and He/CH 4 selectivity (394.1), representing improvements of 81.14% and 319.7%, respectively, compared with pristine 6FDA-TFMB membrane, approaching to the 2008 Robenson upper bound, surpassing most of the reported PI based membranes for He/CH 4 separation. This synergistic architecture not only validated the interface fusion engineering but also provided a foundation for designing efficient He/CH 4 separation materials with tailored microscopic properties.

Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes incorporating metal-organic frameworks have attracted considerable interest in natural gas (NG) dehydration. However, fabricating high-performance TFN membranes remains a major challenge. In the current study, TFN membranes were produced by combining UiO-66 nanoparticles into a Pebax 1657 matrix supported by porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Even though the pore size of UiO-66 is bigger than both water and methane molecules, the presence of UiO-66 in the Pebax significantly improved the H 2 O/CH 4 separation performances, which is attributed to a combined mechanism involving molecular sieving and selective affinity, including the potential formation of hybrid interfacial channels with narrowed pore sizes, the framework flexibility of UiO-66, and the strong hydrogen bonding between H 2 O and the Zr–OH clusters that enhances water solubility selectivity over CH 4 . At a UiO-66 loading of 30 wt%, the water vapor permeance rose to 56,725 GPU, alongside an outstanding H 2 O/CH 4 selectivity (29,553), representing an 110% increase in water permeance and a 990% enhancement in H 2 O/CH 4 selectivity compared to the pristine Pebax membrane. This performance exceeds most literature-reported values, furthermore, the H 2 O/CH 4 separation performances were also carried out using the produced water from a natural gas field, excellent stability of the TFN membrane was observed over a 7-day continuous test, marking a significant advance toward practical application. The findings demonstrate that strategically incorporating UiO-66 into a Pebax matrix to form TFN membranes holds immense potential for NG dehydration. UiO-66 nanoparticles are highly promising candidates for lubricating additives, owing to their favorable mechanical properties and high thermal stability. However, the macroscopic lubrication performance of UiO-66 nanoparticles relying on the ball-bearing mechanism falls significantly short of their microscopic theoretical prediction values. Herein, core–shell structured UiO-66@PDA/MoA nanocomposites were synthesized via a mussel-inspired hybrid strategy using UiO-66 as the core and PDA/MoA layers as the shell. The addition of 0.5 wt% UiO-66@PDA/MoA endowed PEG200 with ultralow friction coefficient (0.0180) and wear volume (6.22 ×10 4 μm 3 ). Compared with PEG200, the introduction of 0.5 wt% UiO-66@PDA/MoA composites decreased the friction coefficient by 50.7% and wear volume by 49.1%. The ultralow friction behavior of UiO-66@PDA/MoA nanocomposites was attributed to the synergistic lubrication of the PDA/MoA layer and UiO-66. Raman spectroscopy and first-principles calculations demonstrated that the introduction of MoA molecules promoted the formation of carbonaceous components with higher graphitization degree in the tribofilm. This design concept of integrating nano-MOF with organic molybdenum provides a novel strategy for developing lubricant additives with ultralow friction.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit promising catalytic potential for various reactions owing to their unique structure composed of designable metal-oxo clusters bridged by organic linkers, modifiable frameworks, and intrinsic porosity. Currently, defective MOFs are gaining considerable attention due to their accessible Lewis acid sites, tunable ligands, and superior performance compared with pristine MOFs. In this work, we have developed an amino-functionalized UiO-66 with ligand defects, denoted as UiO-66-DABAx (where x represents the molar percentage of 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) relative to the total linker content), which enables an efficient pathway for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides under mild conditions. The increased density of Lewis acid sites and the presence of amino-functionalized ligands synergistically facilitate the ring-opening of epoxides and CO2 adsorption. Compared with pristine UiO-66, UiO-66-DABAx exhibits a stronger affinity for CO2. More importantly, UiO-66 modified with 20 mol% DABA (UiO-66-DABA20) exhibits optimal catalytic activity in the CO2 cycloaddition reaction, yielding a cyclic carbonate of 95%. This study paves a promising strategy for the chemical fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates using amino-functionalized defective UiO-66 as a potential heterogeneous catalyst under mild reaction conditions.

Direct degradation of pollutants by free radicals generated from a photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has advantages of both thermodynamics and kinetics, but realizing the high degradation activity and selectivity still remains a great challenge. In this study, we successfully designed donor–acceptor (D-A) UiO-68 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by introducing different electron-withdrawing groups for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. The electron-withdrawing group-functionalized UiO-68 was able to generate singlet oxygen (1O2) rather than hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via the ORR process in the absence of a sacrificial agent. Theoretical and experimental results showed that the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups widened the visible-light absorption range and improved the intramolecular charge transfer, thus generating highly active and selective 1O2 for the degradation of Rhodamine B and methyl orange within 10 min. This study highlights the important role of the synergistic interaction between donor and acceptor units in promoting intramolecular charge transfer to increase the production efficiency of reactive oxygen species, providing a promising strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts and beyond.

Photocatalytic extraction hydrogen from water has been identified as a promising strategy for clean energy production. Constructing heterostructured photocatalysts is a prospective strategy to address the inherent problems of single semiconductor, including sluggish photogenerated charge/electron separation/transfer, fast recombination and interferior light adsorption, thereby contributing to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, NH 2 -UiO-66/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (NU/ZCS) heterostructured photocatalysts were prepared by growing NH 2 -UiO-66 (NU) on Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) for effective photocatalytic hydrogen generation. The optimized 20-NU/ZCS displays a distinguished photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of up to 27.17 mmol g −1 h −1 , representing 1.71 times that of pure ZCS and exceeding most ZCS-based photocatalysts. The boosted photocatalytic activity can be stemmed from the intimate contact and the synergistic effect of NU and ZCS, which accelerate the separation/delivery and suppress the recombination of photogenerated electron/proton, and reinforce the light absorption. This study puts forward a promising method for fabricating ZCS-based heterostructured photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen generation.

The widespread use of acetaminophen (AP) has resulted in its frequent presence in pharmaceutical waste, posing ecological and health risks. To address this, a voltametric sensor based on a bimetallic UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic framework incorporating Zirconium (Zr) and Cerium (Ce) was developed for sensitive AP detection. The incorporation of Ce 3+ not only introduced redox active sites but also reduced the particle size from 495-650 nm in (Zr)UiO-66-NH 2 to 230–365 nm in (Zr/Ce)UiO-66-NH 2 , increasing surface area and enhancing electrocatalytic activity. The combined synergistic effect of Zr and Ce significantly improved charge transfer and enhanced oxidation current response compared to the unmodified GCE. The sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance with a wide linear range (0.072–680 μM), high sensitivity (0.496 μAμM −1 cm −2 ), and a low limit of detection (0.024 μM). In addition, the sensor exhibited excellent selectivity against interfering species and maintained stable performance over 21 days. The sensor's practical applicability was validated by testing real environmental samples, achieving recovery rates of 97–103 %, and the results were consistent with those obtained using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tunable porosity and chemistry for advancing CO 2 capture. In this work, a ‘thermal-annealing–amine vapor deposition' strategy is proposed to synergistically engineer structural defects and uniformly distributed amine functionalities in UiO-66. Controlled annealing generates defect-rich UiO-66 (UiO-66-D) with exposed Zr 6 clusters, while subsequent hydrazine vapor deposition anchors amine groups directly at defective Zr nodes. The optimized material, N 2 H 4 @UiO-66-D, exhibits a markedly increased surface area (1449.36 m 2 /g) and achieves a CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.60 mmol/g (at 298 K, 1 bar and pure CO 2 )—significantly higher than pristine UiO-66 (1.44 mmol/g at 298 K, 1 bar and pure CO 2 ). Enhanced CO 2 /N 2 separation performance is observed under simulated flue-gas conditions (at 1 bar, 298 K and 15 % CO 2 /85 % N 2 ), with IAST selectivity in the range of 111–33. Cyclic adsorption–desorption tests show no obvious decay in CO 2 uptake after ten cycles. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that hydrazine modification increases free volume near defect sites, enhancing local CO 2 density. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that CO 2 preferentially adopts a bidentate surface adsorption (‘face-on') configuration at hydrazine-modified Zr defects, with an adsorption energy of −0.33 eV, confirming strong CO 2 activation and favorable binding. This work establishes a mechanistic framework for coupling defect engineering with vapor-phase amine functionalization, providing transferable design principles for the development of MOF-based CO 2 adsorbents.
