Novel Research Approach Combined with Dielectric Spectrum Testing for Dual-Doped Li7P3S11 Glass-Ceramic Electrolytes

Nan Zhang,Fei Ding,Shihui Yu,Kongying Zhu,Huan Li,Weiguo Zhang,Xingjiang Liu,Qiang Xu

Owing to the expanding function of Li-ion transmission channels, it is important to explore the doping effects of different compounds into sulfide solid electrolytes to improve their electrochemical performances. However, it is hard to characterize the doping behaviors within sulfide solid electrolytes with low crystallinity and poor stability just by conventional crystallography analytical methods. In this work, the dielectric spectrum testing combined with other analytical methods, such as 7Li solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the electrochemical method, have been applied to investigate the dual-doping behaviors of WS2 and LiBr within Li7P3S11 glass-ceramic electrolytes. This research method can not only evaluate the internal acting effect between the skeleton of sulfide solid electrolytes and the migrating kinetics of Li ions but also explore the capacitance at the interfaces of LiCoO2/sulfide solid electrolytes. The experimental results show that the number of Li ions with fast transport velocity within Li2S-P2S5-based solid electrolytes has been increased. Meanwhile, the interfacial capacitances between Li2S-P2S5-based solid electrolytes and the LiCoO2 cathode have decreased after dual-doping of WS2 and LiBr, indicating a synergetic effect for the doped Li7P3S11 glass-ceramic electrolytes in terms of the ionic conductivities and interfacial compatibilities. This work may provide a novel analytical approach to explore both the diffusion kinetics and interfacial behaviors for the solid electrolytes of lithium batteries.

Embedding WS2 sheets parallel to SnS sheets for high performance in K-ion batteries

Shiying Wei,Jianfeng Huang,Yiting Wang,Qingqing Huang,Shuzhuo Bai,Koji Kajiyoshi,Yijun Liu,Zhenjiang Li,Liyun Cao,Jiayin Li

Tin sulfide (SnS) exhibits the potential to be used as a superior-performance electrode material for potassium ion batteries. However, serious volume expansion and poor ion transport capacity hinder the applications of SnS. In order to solve the above problems, this work designed a structure that parallel WS 2 sheets were embedded in SnS sheets (SnS/WS 2 @C). SnS/WS 2 @C displayed excellent kinetic properties and stability when applied to anode materials for potassium ion batteries, as well as a high reversible capacity. SnS/WS 2 @C maintains a superior specific capacity of 619 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 and 210 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 . Such excellent performance is attributed to the fact that parallelly oriented WS 2 sheets provide fast channels for the transportation of potassium ions, which significantly improves the kinetic performance of the electrode, and can play an anchoring role for products in the process of charging and discharging by virtue of its excellent stability to effectively prevent structural fragmentation. This work provides new ideas for improving ion diffusion and enhancing the structural stability of transition metal layered compounds while maintaining the capacity advantage.

Self-templated induced carbon-supported hollow WS2 composite structure for high-performance sodium storage

Xiaomin Luo,Jianfeng Huang,Yixuan Huang,Liyun Cao,Jiayin Li,Yuhang Wang,Zhanwei Xu,Shiying Wei,Koji Kajiyoshi

Building composite structures of hollow metal sulfides and carbon material is considered an effective strategy for improving the performance of sodium storage. However, most of these composite structures are implemented using complex hard-templating and multiple-step methods. Moreover, the mechanism for enhancing the electrochemistry of carbon materials in hollow structures is not clear. In this work, a carbon-supported hollow tungsten disulfide (WS2) cuboid composite structure (marked H-WS2) was synthesized in one step by a self-templating method. On the one hand, the hollow composite structure can alleviate the volume changes during the charging and discharging processes, showing good structural stability. On the other hand, the pyrolytic carbon and nanosheet structure can effectively promote the transport of electrons/ions, exhibiting fast reaction kinetics. The H-WS2 electrode showed improved electrochemical performance for sodium storage. A high reversible capacity was achieved, 353.2 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1. At a high current density of 5.0 A g−1, the reversible capacity of 236.7 mA h g−1 was still achieved. This work provides new insight into the synthesis of hollow metal sulfides and carbon composite structures.

Enhanced formaldehyde sensing performance of CdFe2O4 via surface sensitization with MoS2 or WS2 nanosheets

Jiahao Li,Ren Liu,Xiangfeng Chu,Shiming Liang

Despite the recognized potential of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) as effective sensitizers for metal oxides, comparative insights into their specific sensitization effects on spinel ferrites remain lacking. Herein, MoS 2 -CdFe 2 O 4 and WS 2 -CdFe 2 O 4 composites were synthesized via an in-situ solvothermal-calcination strategy. Characterization results confirmed that the incorporation of TMDs effectively modulated the microstructure and surface properties of CdFe 2 O 4 . Specifically, the WS 2 -CdFe 2 O 4 (WDF-10) had a larger specific surface area (10.14 m 2 /g) and pore volume than the MoS 2 -CdFe 2 O 4 (MDF-10), exposing more active sites. XPS suggests an increased fraction of defect-related/adsorbed oxygen species in the composites. Gas-sensing tests revealed performance differences: the WDF-10 sensor exhibited a remarkable response to 100 ppm formaldehyde at 140°C, approximately 2.5 times higher than the MDF-10. Meanwhile, the MDF-10 sensor demonstrated reduced response/recovery times, enhanced quantitative precision, and remarkable long-term stability. The sensitization mechanism is attributed to the synergistic effect of increased specific surface area and the proposed formation of p-n heterojunctions. Energy band analysis suggests that WS 2 , with its unique band alignment, may induce a stronger depletion layer modulation on CdFe 2 O 4 , thereby enhancing the response. This work demonstrates that surface sensitization with MoS 2 or WS 2 is an effective strategy to enhance the gas-sensing performance of spinel ferrites.

Novel Polyarylene Ether Nitrile/BaTiO3-Decorated WS2 Nanohybrid Crosslinked Nanocomposites for Thermal-Stable Dielectrics

Xiaohua Mao,Jingtao Zhou,Junda Wu,Siyi Chen,Pan Wang,Yong You

To prepare high-temperature-resistant dielectric composite films, a novel three-dimensional nanofiller was fabricated using carboxylated polyarylene ether nitrile as a bridge, which tightly loads BaTiO3nanoparticles onto WS2nanosheets (WS2@BT) via in situ chemical bonding. Afterward, the WS2@BT nanofiller was introduced into the polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) matrix, and high-temperature heat treatment was performed to form a crosslinked network, yielding CPEN/WS2@BT nanocomposites. Notably, the modified WS2@BT effectively improves the compatibility between the nanoparticles and the PEN matrix, which is superior to the compatibility of unmodified nanofillers with the matrix. Moreover, after crosslinking, CPEN/WS2@BT exhibits excellent comprehensive performance: when the filler content is 30 wt%, its glass transition temperature (Tg) reaches 257.83 °C, significantly higher than that of PEN/WS2@BT, and its dielectric constant is 193% higher than that of pure CPEN. In addition, the dielectric temperature coefficient remains below 1 × 10−3°C−1in the range of 25–220 °C. Overall, this work provides an effective and reliable strategy for preparing high-performance, high-temperature-resistant composite dielectric films.

Pressure‑Welded WS2‑Bridged Silver Nanowire Electrode for Flexible OLEDs Achieving Record Device Efficiency

Jiahui Du,Ruihao Yang,Mengyuan Gao,Yuanyuan Guo,Hua Wang,Yuying Hao,Bingshe Xu,Yanqin Miao

The development of flexible electronics urgently requires high-performance transparent electrodes to overcome the mechanical limitations and cost associated with indium tin oxide. Although silver nanowire (AgNW) networks are promising alternatives, their practical application remains challenged by high junction resistance, surface roughness, weak adhesion, and environmental instability. Here, we develop a multi-functional interfacial engineering strategy, termed “rivet-welding”, that integrates WS 2 nanosheets with AgNW network through capillary-driven assembly and mechanical pressing. This process promotes AgNW embedding and surface planarization while strengthening the WS 2 /AgNW interface through Ag–S interactions, resulting in a composite electrode with a sheet resistance of 19.2 Ω sq −1 , a transmittance of 92.0%, and a low surface roughness of 7.1 nm, together with enhanced mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and adhesion. As anodes for flexible phosphorescent OLEDs, the resulting electrodes enable green and red devices with external quantum efficiencies of 23.84% and 24.68%, respectively, while retaining 79% and 81% of their initial luminance after 1000 bending cycles without encapsulation. This work demonstrates an effective interfacial strategy for integrating 2D WS 2 nanosheets with AgNW networks and provides a practical route toward high-performance flexible transparent electrodes for optoelectronic applications.

Bi-WS2 nanoflowers with expanded interlayer spacing for fast-charging sodium-ion battery anodes

Yingfan Guo,Yijun Gao,Shanshan Song,Yumeng Zhang,Zhong Xiao,Qiqi Sun,Lei Li,Fei He

Tungsten sulfide (WS 2 ) is a promising sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) anode due to its high capacity and distinctive layered structure, but its practical use is hindered by poor conductivity, large volume expansion, and particle aggregation. In the study, a bismuth-doped WS 2 (Bi-WS 2 ) nanoflower structure is developed to overcome the above limitations. The intercalation of bismuth ions expands the interlayer distance of WS 2 from 0.62 nm to 0.67 nm, thereby providing more space for Na + storage. Moreover, the incorporated bismuth ions further improve the electronic conductivity and contribute to improved structural stability. The nanoflower architecture presents ample exposed edge sites, which facilitate reversible diffusion of Na + along the edges and help to mitigate mechanical stress developed during the discharge-charge cycles. Notably, the bismuth doped tungsten disulfide nanoflowers delivers a high reversible capacity of 433.0 mAh g −1  at 0.2 A g −1 with an exceptional rate capability. Even after 2000 cycles at a high current of 10.0 A g −1 , it still delivers a capacity of 234.4 mAh g −1 , exhibiting promising electrochemical performance in comparison with previously reported anodes. Hence, Bi-WS 2 demonstrates great potential for use as a high-rate anode in future generation SIBs.

Anticorrosion performance of PDA and WS2 synergistically modified graphene oxide/epoxy resin composite coatings

Le Zhai,Chunguang Ban,Siyuan Wang,Xueli Yang,Li Huang

The epoxy resin is one of the most distinguished anticorrosive organic polymers with outstanding features of excellent resistance to moisture, remarkable resistance to solvents, and great adhesion properties to various surfaces of metals. However, epoxy resin suffers from several drawbacks such as high brightness. Here, we proposed synergistic modification of GO by dopamine and tungsten disulfide (PW-GO) to improve the aggregation of GO in epoxy resin and thus enhance the anticorrosive performance of PW-GO-EP composite coatings. The 3D multilayer structure of PW-GO nanofillers effectively blocks the diffusion of corrosive media, thus providing excellent corrosion resistance. At the optimum ratio of WS2:DA:GO = 1:1:1, a minimum current density and maximum impedance were obtained. The impedance of composite coatings remained as 1.19 × 108 Ω cm2 after immersing in 3.5 wt-% NaCl aqueous solution for 45 days, indicating its excellent anticorrosive performance. The underlying mechanism is revealed in terms of the blocking effect of the 3D multilayered PW-GO nanofillers on corrosive mediums. The findings reported here will have important implications for developing new types of epoxy-based coatings.

Synthesis of Wafer-Scale Monolayer WS2 Crystals toward the Application in Integrated Electronic Devices

Jiajun Chen,Kai Shao,Weihuang Yang,Weiqing Tang,Jiangpeng Zhou,Qinming He,Yaping Wu,Chunmiao Zhang,Xu Li,Xu Yang,Zhiming Wu,Junyong Kang

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) possess unique electronic and optical properties, which open up a new opportunity for atomically thin optoelectronic devices. Synthesizing large-scale monolayer TMDCs on the SiO2/Si substrate is crucial for practical applications, however, it remains a big challenge. In this work, a method which combines chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and thermal evaporation was employed to grow monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) crystals. Through controlling the density and the distribution of W precursors, a wafer-scale continuous uniform WS2 film was achieved, with the structural and spectral characterizations confirming a monolayer configuration and a high crystalline quality. Wafer-scale field-effect transistor arrays based on the monolayer WS2 were fabricated. The devices show superior electrical performances, and the maximal mobility is almost 1 order of magnitude higher than those of CVD-grown large-scale TMDC devices reported so far.

WS2-TiO2 Heterostructure Catalyst for Boosting the Polysulfide Adsorption–Conversion in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Zongmin Chen,Yaping Xiong,Huazhong Liu,Mouzhi Huang,Xiao Yang,Ze Zhang,Zhenyu Yang,Jianxin Cai

The introduction of suitable catalytic hosts is considered as a suitable way to hinder the “shuttling effect” of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. At present, most catalytic hosts can accelerate the conversion of LPSs, but there are few reports that catalytic hosts accelerate the conversion of solid-phase discharge products (Li2S2/Li2S) into liquid-phase LPSs. Herein, a heterostructure catalyst with flaky WS2-modified TiO2 hollow spheres (WS2-TiO2) is reported, which accelerates the conversion between liquid-phase LPSs and solid-phase Li2S2/Li2S. A Li–S battery with S@WS2-TiO2 cathode exhibits an initial discharge specific capacity of 1091.7 mAh g–1 at 0.3C, outstanding rate capability of 378.7mAh g–1 at 10C, and low capacity decay of 0.0753% per cycle over 800 cycles at 1C. Therefore, this work provides a suitable way to construct heterosturcture catalytic hosts to realize the commercial application of Li–S batteries.

Defect-mediated strong exciton-phonon coupling between flower-like WS2 film with vicinity layers

Pu Chang,Shuo Zhang,Lixiu Guan,Hui Zhang,Guifeng Chen,Junguang Tao

The exciton-phonon coupling plays an important role in the optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. In the preparation of 2D TMDC films, there are often different degrees of intrinsic defects, which have significant impacts on their optical and electrical properties. Here, we have investigated the effect of intrinsic defects on resonant Raman spectroscopy (RRS) in WS 2 . In a modified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, flower-like (with three petaloids) WS 2 bilayers (FLO-B) and trilayers (FLO-T) can be produced in S-rich condition. It was found that the LA(M), E 1 2g , A 1g Raman modes and excitons of flower-like WS 2 exhibit abnormal behaviors due to the rich defects in the flower-like WS 2 flakes. The population of X D gets increased and the shift of its binding energy is ~30 meV larger than that of A 0 for the defective flower-like WS 2 , which leads to greatly enhanced exciton-phonon interaction. Under low-frequency RRS, the appearance of petal morphology greatly enhances the scattering intensity and activate the SM 32 phonon mode, normally not seen for backscattering. The appearance of this defect-assisted phonon mode is also related to the increase of scattering cross-section and exciton Bohr radius. Our work reveals the feasibility of shape-controlled exciton-phonon interactions in defective WS 2 films and improves our understanding of the light-matter interaction principles in this material.

Mechanism of substrate-induced anisotropic growth of monolayer WS2 by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

Wu Lixiang,Yang Weihuang,Wang Gaofeng

Controlled anisotropic growth of two-dimensional materials provides an approach for the synthesis of large single crystals and nanoribbons, which are promising for applications as low-dimensional semiconductors and in next-generation optoelectronic devices. In particular, the anisotropic growth of transition metal dichalcogenides induced by the substrate is of great interest due to its operability. To date, however, their substrate-induced anisotropic growth is typically driven by the optimization of experimental parameters without uncovering the fundamental mechanism. Here, the anisotropic growth of monolayer tungsten disulfide on an ST-X quartz substrate is achieved by chemical vapor deposition, and the mechanism of substrate-induced anisotropic growth is examined by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that, besides the variation of substrate adsorption, the chalcogen to metal (C/M) ratio is a major contributor to the large growth anisotropy and the polarization of undergrowth and overgrowth; either perfect isotropy or high anisotropy can be expected when the C/M ratio equals 2.0 by properly controlling the linear relationship between gas flux and temperature.
