The photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technique has attracted much attention to getting clear energy and environmental purification. Simultaneous reactions of solar energy generation could be used to apply for practical applications to maximize the functionality of reactor systems. Herein, we crafted a self-driving photoelectrocatalytic reactor system, comprising platinum (Pt) modified p-Si nanowires (Pt/Si-NWs) as a photocathode and TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2–NTAs) as a photoanode for synergistic H2 evolution and water purification, respectively. Hydrogen evolution in the cathode chamber and environmental remediation in the anode chamber were achieved with the aid of appropriate bandgap illumination and self-built bias voltage. The mismatch of Fermi levels between TiO2–NTAs and Si-NWs reduced the recombination rates of photoinduced electrons and holes through the formation of Z scheme and inner electric filed. The synergistic PEC reactions exhibited much higher activities than those achieved using other systems so far. This basic principal could be applied for fabricating other PEC reactors in photoelectro conversion devices and be established as design guidelines for reactors to maximize the PEC performance.

In this paper, spherical g-C 3 N 4 modified by N defect and O doping was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method , and combined with CdS to form a direct Z-type heterojunction . Combined with a series of characterizations (XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR and UV–vis DRS), the results show that the addition of CTAB brings a lot of positive charges on the surface of N-OCN. According to the principle of electrostatic attraction, positively charged N-OCN negatively charged CdS attract each other, which strengthens the close contact between CdS and N-OCN and plays an important role in stabilizing the formation of heterojunction. CdS is anchored to N-OCN through electrostatic interaction. Under the irradiation of visible light, the electrons on CB on positively charged N-OCN combine with holes on negatively charged CdS valence band, which improves the redox ability in photocatalytic reaction system. Taking methyl orange (MO) as a pollutant degradation model, the possible degradation mechanism was discussed in detail. This study provides a simple, effective and wide application method for the modification of g-C 3 N 4 .

A series of MnO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composites with different exposed crystal plane were successfully prepared by different synthesized method. UV–Vis, PL , ESR and electrochemical results suggest that the visible-light absorbance, photoexcited electron-separation efficiency and oxygen defects are greatly dependent on the exposed crystal-faceted MnO 2 supported on g-C 3 N 4 . The experimental results display that the exposed crystal plane of MnO 2 have great influences on the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, and the m-MnOCN composite with exposed (111) crystal plane exhibits superior photocatalytic performance for the release of H 2 under visible light irradiation , followed by the order of b-MnOCN [002]> p-MnOCN [110]. Moreover, Mechanism studies have shown that the possible mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction is Z-scheme mechanism.

Black phosphorus (BP), a phosphorus analog of graphene, is a two-dimensional material with the thickness-dependent bandgap and a high carrier mobility, which emerges as a promising material in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this study, BP loaded with surface hydroxyl has been prepared by liquid ultrasonic exfoliation and used as the co-catalyst, which results in 341% photocatalytic hydrogen evolution enhancement to the anatase TiO 2 under the simulated sunlight irradiation and a quantum efficiency as high as 18.23% at 365 nm. The improved photocatalytic activity has been ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism. These results indicate that 2D surface hydroxyl-loaded BP can be used as a broadband photocatalyst by forming type II heterostructures with other wide-bandgap semiconductors.

To improve the solubility
and bioavailability of astaxanthin
while
enhancing its processing properties, this study established an eco-friendly,
highly efficient microwave-assisted Z -isomerization
system. We first conducted a systematic screening of various menthol-based
deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to identify the most effective medium
for this conversion. Following the selection of the optimal DES, we
investigated the catalytic effect of three representative natural
sulfur-containing compounds─methyl isothiocyanate (MITC), hexyl
isothiocyanate, and dimethyltrisulfide─under microwave irradiation.
Furthermore, we systematically evaluated the influence of other key
process parameters, including heating method, catalyst dosage, astaxanthin
mass concentration, microwave power, temperature, and duration, through
single-factor experiments. The results demonstrated that the menthol-acetic
acid-based DES provided the most effective reaction environment, and
MITC exhibited the highest catalytic efficacy, achieving a peak total Z -isomer proportion of 36.2% at 60 mg/mL, compared to a
baseline of 6.82% in the catalyst-free control group. Mechanistic
analysis suggests that the electrophilicity of isothiocyanates and
the steric effects of their side chains play critical roles in the
isomerization process. These findings demonstrate that this green
processing system can serve as an efficient and sustainable approach
for the production of Z -isomer-enriched astaxanthin.

Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed. • Bi N/Bi O bonds enhanced interfacial charge transfer. • BHG-3 achieved 97.26% MB removal under visible light. • ·O 2 − and h + were identified as dominant active species. • BHG-3 showed good stability and broad pollutant applicability. To integrate the visible-light-harvesting capability of g-C 3 N 4 with the interfacial electron-transfer function of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), a Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 (BHG) direct Z -scheme heterojunction was constructed via a facile hydrothermal assembly strategy. Structural and surface chemical characterizations confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction, where strong interfacial coupling was established through Bi–N/Bi–O coordination bonds and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic analyses revealed that the BHG heterojunction markedly promoted charge separation and migration, as evidenced by an enhanced photocurrent response, reduced interfacial charge-transfer resistance, and suppressed recombination of photogenerated carriers. The optimized BHG-3 composite exhibited excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity, achieving 97.26% removal of methylene blue (MB) within 40 min, with an apparent reaction rate constant 3.39 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, BHG-3 showed good cycling stability, favorable tolerance to selected coexisting inorganic anions and degradation capability toward several model organic contaminants. Radical trapping experiments and mechanistic analyses confirmed a direct Z -scheme charge-transfer pathway, in which electrons enriched on g-C 3 N 4 and holes retained on Bi-HOF synergistically participated in pollutant degradation. The possible photodegradation pathway of MB over BHG-3 was further proposed based on LC-MS analysis. This work provides insight into interfacial charge regulation in HOF-based photocatalysts and offers a feasible strategy for developing efficient visible-light-driven systems for organic pollutant degradation.

CoOOH/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction is synthesized for PMS activation. • Sustained Co2+/Co3+ redox cycle promotes stable PMS activation. • The synergistic catalytic system exhibits excellent pollutant removal capacity. To address the challenges of high carrier recombination rate and insufficient active sites in the photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, this study reports the in situ synthesis of a CoOOH/g-C 3 N 4 Z-scheme heterojunction via an interface regulation strategy, identified the synergistic “Z-scheme charge transfer-PMS activation” mechanism, and realized efficient degradation of sulfamerazine (SMR). Experimental characterization and theoretical calculation confirmed that the CoOOH and g-C 3 N 4 not only induce a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway to preserve strong redox capacity, but also elevate the oxygen vacancies concentration in CoOOH. Z-scheme heterojunction significantly enhances the visible light response capability and improves the separation and migration efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Among the synthesized photocatalysts, CoOOH/CN-10 demonstrated the optimal catalytic performance. Radical trapping experiments revealed that the degradation process was primarily driven by electrons (e ⁻ ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), while superoxide radicals (•O 2 ⁻ ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) played a secondary role. This work not only presents an efficient catalyst for PMS activation but also provides valuable insights into the design of Z-scheme photocatalyst for aquatic pollutant remediation. Kinetic resolution polymerization (KRP) of nonpolar conjugated dienes remains a significant challenge because of their flexible coordination modes and subtle reactivity differences between isomers. Herein, we report that by fine-tuning ligand steric environments and metal centers, the KRP of naturally occurring (E,Z)-β-ocimene (E/Z-Oc) was successfully realized by using catalysts 1 and 5 to afford a stereoregular E-homopolymer while simultaneously isolating a Z-isomer with high purity (>95.5%). Moreover, complex 1 enabled to polymerize Z-Oc in highly isotactic trans-1,4 selectivity in moderate activity and rapidly polymerized E-Oc in an atactic 1,2-regularity-enriched mode, which may provide the block copolymer of poly(E-Oc)-b-poly(Z-Oc) by stepwise loading of Z-Oc followed by E-Oc. Using complex 2, the block copolymer of poly(E-Oc)-b-poly(Z-Oc) was obtained in one pot. Real-time 1H nuclear magnetic resonance kinetic studies revealed that E-Oc polymerized significantly faster than Z-Oc, depending on the ligand structure. Density functional theory calculations further indicated that the isomer-dependent regio- and stereoselectivity originated from chain-end and geometric site control mechanisms. This work demonstrated that rare-earth metal catalysts provide a powerful platform for KRP of complex terpene-derived dienes, offering a sustainable strategy for both isomer separation and precise polymer synthesis.

Photocatalytic persulfate (PMS) activation has gained significant attention for environmental remediation. Despite progress, developing efficient, sustainable photocatalysts remains challenging. We report a solvothermally synthesized In 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction with subsequent ion impregnation. This novel photocatalyst demonstrates exceptional PMS activation under visible light, achieving 95.2% tetracycline (TC) degradation within 120 min. The enhanced performance stems from intimate interfacial contact in the Z-scheme configuration, facilitating rapid photogenerated charge transfer. Furthermore, PMS serves dual roles as radical precursor and electron scavenger, promoting generation of reactive radicals for TC degradation. This work presents an advanced Z-scheme photocatalyst system offering efficient organic pollutant removal, with potential applications in water purification technologies.

The use and discharge of antibiotics have posed a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. Tetracycline antibiotics such as tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) are of particular concern owing to their environmental persistence and ecological toxicity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a Z-scheme heterojunction zinc oxide (ZnO)–cadmium sulfide (CdS) composite via chemical bath deposition, which was used for the tribocatalytic degradation of TCH. Experimental results demonstrated that under optimal conditions (100-mg catalyst, 50-mL TCH solution, and 300 rpm), the optimized sample (ZC30)exhibited 97% efficiency for TCH degradation within 20 min and >98% efficiency after 100 min, with a high total organic carbon removal rate of 81.02%, demonstrating excellent mineralization capability. The formation of the ZnO–CdS heterojunction and its Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism were confirmed via multiple characterization techniques: X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance analysis revealed that superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) were the dominant reactive species in the degradation process. The catalyst retained a high degradation efficiency and structural stability for over five consecutive cycles, indicating a strong potential for practical applications. Antibiotics pose a significant threat to ecosystems and human health, creating an urgent need to develop highly efficient visible-light-driven degradation catalytic technologies. In this study, we synthesized a CuO/B-g-C 3 N 4 (CO/BCN) direct Z -scheme heterojunction composite photocatalyst based on non-metallic doping and heterojunction engineering. XRD, TEM, and XPS analyses indicate that the material exhibits good crystallinity and forms a tightly bound interfacial heterostructure. Photoelectronic measurements reveal a significant enhancement in visible light absorption and an improvement in carrier separation efficiency. Under illumination, the 0.2-CO/BCN system achieved 97.6% degradation of tetracycline (TC) within 120 min. The performance improvement is attributed to the Z -scheme heterojunction, which facilitates charge transport and suppresses the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. Radical trapping, EPR and work function characterization further elucidated the reaction mechanism. This study provides a theoretical basis and experimental reference for regulating energy levels through elemental doping and constructing heterojunction composite photocatalytic materials. Photocatalyst-based degradation of antibiotic pollutants is recognized as a promising strategy for wastewater treatment and solar energy conversion and utilization. The hydrothermal-ultrasound synthesized Mg-doped BiOCl/BiOIO 3 heterojunction (MBB) exhibits superior light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation, achieving 87.69% removal in 60 min and outperforming pristine BiOCl and BiOIO 3 by 2.1- and 1.5-fold, enabled by band matching that suppresses charge recombination and improves carrier separation. Radical-trapping experiments reveal •OH and •O 2 ⁻ as the dominant reactive species responsible for TC photodegradation. Photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) tests confirm that the MBB heterostructure has a faster migration rate of photogenerated carriers and a lower charge recombination rate. DFT calculations reveal that Mg doping shrinks the bandgap of BiOCl and optimizes the energy band arrangement of the heterojunction, thereby enhancing the light absorption capability. After five cycles, the MBB-0.2 (Mg-BiOCl/BiOIO 3 mass ratio 1:0.2) sample retains 76% degradation efficiency, without significant changes in phase and morphology, highlighting its stability for practical water treatment. This study attains the optimization of various photocatalysts through strategic doping and the construction of heterojunction structures, thereby maximizing the utilization rate of solar energy, providing a new research approach for the development of efficient solar conversion systems.
