Blowing-Combustion Synthesis of Sponge-like NixZn1−xFe2O4 and Its Structural and Magnetic Properties

Chuan Chen,Tianhao Yao,Sen Qian,Qiang Zhang,Ximin Zhang

Graphical A series of Ni x Zn 1−x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) sponges have been fabricated through a facile blowing-combustion method. The optimized Ni 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 sponge showed pure phase of spinel ferrite and displayed enhanced magnetic satuaratiuon of 44.98 emu/g. Spinel ferrites have been widely used in various fields, among which nickel-zinc (NiZn) ferrites have drawn much attention due to their high electrical resistivity as well as low eddy current loss. To accommodate highly-integrated modern electronic devices, the preparation methods for nano/micro-sized NiZn ferrites have been widely discussed. Nevertheless, these current synthesis routes are usually cost/time-consuming, which hinders their large-scale production for practical applications. Herein, we present a facile, low-cost synthesis strategy for NiZn ferrites (Ni x Zn 1−x Fe 2 O 4 , x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) through a blowing-combustion method. The effect of Ni/Zn molar concentration on the structure, morphology as well as magnetic properties has been thoroughly investigated through X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. Thanks to the synergetic effect of the pure phase and moderate Ni molar concentration, the Ni 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 shows an enhanced saturation magnetization of 44.98 emu/g. More importantly, this blowing-combustion method may also be commonly applied to other spinel ferrites with different stoichiometric ratios and heteroatom doping.

Multiphase Cu-Zn alloys interlayer enabled by in-situ electrochemical preparation in deep eutectic solvents for ultra-stable zinc metal anode of Zn-ion battery

Hang-Jie Cai,Ming-Yuan Gao,Meng-Wei Guo,Rong-Rong Deng,Yan Li,Juan-Jian Ru,Yi-Xin Hua,Qi-Bo Zhang,Cun-Ying Xu

Zn alloy engineering has emerged as a promising anodic strategy for aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs), effectively suppressing side reactions and dendritic growth. However, the impact of multiphase alloy compositions on zinc deposition and overall battery stability remains insufficiently understood. In this study, a versatile deep eutectic solvent (DES) was employed as both the electrolyte and the reaction medium for multiphase alloy formation. Hierarchically porous Cu-Zn multiphase alloys were fabricated on a three-dimensional (3D) Cu foam substrate (Cu-Zn/CF) via electrochemical deposition, with precise control over alloy composition achieved by adjusting deposition parameters. The synergistic interactions among Cu-Zn alloying elements significantly enhance the hydrogen evolution overpotential, reduce corrosion current, and effectively suppress Zn dendrite formation during repeated cycling. Furthermore, the combination of Cu-Zn alloys with the 3D Cu foam architecture facilitates highly reversible zinc plating and stripping processes. Consequently, the Cu-Zn/CF anode demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining performance for over 4000 h at 0.5 mA·cm −2 (0.5 mAh·cm −2 ). Notably, the anode retains excellent cycling stability with minimal polarization and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99% even under rigorous operating conditions. This work not only clarifies the functional roles of alloying components but also presents a novel strategy for the development of stable, dendrite-free zinc metal anodes.

Metal-organic Zn-zoledronic acid and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid nanostick-mediated zinc phosphate hybrid coating on biodegradable Zn for osteoporotic fracture healing implants

Junyu Qian,Haotian Qin,Peijie Zeng,Jiaming Hou,Xiaoshan Mo,Gang Shen,Hui Zeng,Wentai Zhang,Yingqi Chen,Guojiang Wan

Zn and its alloys are increasingly under consideration for biodegradable bone fracture fixation implants owing to their attractive biodegradability and mechanical properties . However, their clinical application is a challenge for osteoporotic bone fracture healing , due to their uneven degradation mode, burst release of zinc ions , and insufficient osteo-promotion and osteo-resorption regulating properties. In this study, a type of Zn 2+ coordinated zoledronic acid (ZA) and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) metal-organic hybrid nanostick was synthesized, which was further mixed into zinc phosphate (ZnP) solution to mediate the deposition and growth of ZnP to form a well-integrated micro-patterned metal-organic/inorganic hybrid coating on Zn. The coating protected noticeably the Zn substrate from corrosion, in particular reducing its localized occurrence as well as suppressing its Zn 2+ release. Moreover, the modified Zn was osteo-compatible and osteo-promotive and, more important, performed osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo of well-balanced pro-osteoblast and anti-osteoclast responses. Such favorable functionalities are related to the nature of its bioactive components, especially the bio-functional ZA and the Zn ions it contains, as well as its unique micro- and nano-scale structure. This strategy provides not only a new avenue for surface modification of biodegradable metals but also sheds light on advanced biomaterials for osteoporotic fracture and other applications. Statement of significance Developing appropriate biodegradable metallic materials is of clinical relevance for osteoporosis fracture healing, whereas current strategies are short of good balance between the bone formation and resorption. Here, we designed a micropatterned metal-organic nanostick mediated zinc phosphate hybrid coating modified Zn biodegradable metal to fulfill such a balanced osteogenicity. The in vitro assays verified the coated Zn demonstrated outstanding pro-osteoblasts and anti-osteoclasts properties and the coated intramedullary nail promoted fracture healing well in an osteoporotic femur fracture rat model. Our strategy may offer not only a new avenue for surface modification of biodegradable metals but also shed light on better understanding of new advanced biomaterials for orthopedic application among others.

One-step synthesis of configurational-entropy In-doped Zn(O,S)/Zn-doped In(OH)3-xSx composite for visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Hairus Abdullah,Riski Titian Ginting,Refi Ikhtiari,Noto Susanto Gultom,Hardy Shuwanto,Dong-Hau Kuo

Configurational entropy composites of In-doped Zn(O,S)/Zn-doped In(OH) 3-x S x has been synthesized with a one-step hydrothermal method and carefully characterized with XRD , XPS , SEM, TEM, DRS , PL , EIS , TPC , CV , and MS analyses. The composites were prepared with different sulfur amounts to obtain the optimum performance of visible-light photocatalytic HER . The primary phases of ZnS and In(OH) 3 were formed after the hydrothermal process. However, the results indicated In and O were doped into ZnS lattice and induced lower bandgap values (~2.71–2.84 eV) which are active in visible-light illumination. Simultaneously, the excess Zn and S were also doped to In(OH) 3 with lower bandgap values (~3.38–4.63 eV). The variation of bandgap values is due to the hybridization of In 5s5p to Zn 4s4p and O 2p to S 3p orbitals. As a result, In-doped Zn(O,S) and Zn-doped In(OH) 3-x S x will be a visible-light active material for photoreaction and a favorable phase for electron transfer , respectively. Furthermore, it is also related to a possible antisite-defect formation with I n Z n + to help the electron trapping and enhance the photocarrier separation, leading to an efficient photocatalytic activity . ZI-S1 with additional 5-mmol thioacetamide was found as the catalyst with the highest HER performance which achieved 730 μmol/g·h under visible-light illumination. A plausible photocatalytic HER mechanism is discussed and proposed in this work.

Zeyan Zhou,Taotao Zeng,Haoran Zhang,Ding Chen

Vanadium nitride (VN) with a wide working window has been identified as a promising electrode material candidate for batteries due to the high specific capacitance and the excellent electrical conductivity. Here, we have successfully prepared VCN nanobelts, which display mesoporous structure with high specific surface area (54.4 m2g−1) and the total pore volume was 0.266 cm3g−1. Furthermore, the prepared flexible Zn-ion battery (FZIB) with VCN-5 not only exhibited high specific capacitance (81 μAh cm−2), excellent rate capability, and long cyclic durability (77% after 1000 cycles at 0.6 mA cm−2) but also had the characteristics of flexibility. This FZIB is important to reduce the difficulty in thermal management and can be used in a series of applications, including wearable electric devices.

Zn-BBPY-metal-organic gel electrochemiluminescence for cytochrome c detection

Ala'a Mhmoued Abdllh Alboull,Yu Zheng,Saman Hosseinkhani,Mohamed Ibrahim Halawa,Altaf Hussain,Jiyang Liu,Guobao Xu

Zn–BBPY–MOG was synthesized via simple ambient self-assembly. • Zn–BBPY–MOG served as a self-luminescent ECL platform. • Zn–BBPY–MOG/S₂O₈ 2− achieved 81.5% relative ECL efficiency. • Cyt c was detected with a low LOD of 0.025 nM. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing has emerged as a powerful analytical technique for biomolecule detection. Cytochrome c (Cyt c), an important biomarker associated with cellular damage and various diseases, has attracted considerable attention in bioanalytical research. Herein, we report a zinc-based metal-organic gel (Zn-BBPY-MOG) as a self-luminescent ECL platform for the sensitive detection of Cyt c. Zn-BBPY-MOG was synthesized under ambient conditions via coordination between Zn 2+ ions and the π-conjugated ligand 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine (BBPY). The resulting gel network, featuring strong coordination interactions and an extended π-conjugation, facilitates efficient electron transfer and enables intense ECL emission in the presence of S₂O₈ 2− as a coreactant. Compared with the standard Ru(bpy)₃ 2+ /S₂O₈ 2− reference system, Zn-BBPY-MOG/S₂O₈ 2− achieved a relative ECL efficiency of 81.5%, demonstrating its efficient ECL performance. Based on the quenching effect of Cyt c on the Zn-BBPY-MOG/S₂O₈ 2− ECL system, a sensitive and quantitative detection strategy was established. The developed sensing platform exhibited a wide linear detection range from 1 to 1000 nM and an ultralow detection limit of 0.025 nM for Cyt c. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of Cyt c in serum samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries ranging from 99.20% to 102.50%. These results demonstrate the reliability and practical applicability of the Zn-BBPY-MOG-based ECL platform for sensitive biomolecular analysis. Kinetic Insight into Zn Vacancy-Mediated Deactivation of GaN:ZnO Photocatalysts

Meng Liu,Jifang Zhang,Haifeng Wang,Kaiwei Liu,Jiaming Zhang,Yao Xu,Xiaowei Tao,Zihao Zhang,Boyang Zhang,Ke Shi,Guijun Ma

The GaN:ZnO solid solution, a typical oxynitride semiconductor with narrow bandgaps, is one of the most promising catalysts for photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the photostability of this material has been a major drawback. Herein, we identify the primary cause of the deactivation of GaN:ZnO as the dissolution of the ZnO component. Based on in situ characterizations combining time-resolved and steady-state PEC and spectroscopic techniques, a defect model is proposed where zinc vacancies (VZn) exhibit dual charge states: an electron-filled state that traps holes and an oxidized state that traps electrons. The excessive VZn arising from ZnO dissolution increases the population of vacancies in the oxidized state, making recombination by electron trapping more dominant. It is further revealed that both the initial and oxidized states of VZn directly influence the recombination dynamics of photo-generated carriers on μs–ms timescales. Based on these mechanistic insights, the NiO cocatalyst serving as a surface hole reservoir is modified to suppress the photodissolution of ZnO, prolonging carrier lifetime from μs to over 1 s and enhancing the PEC stability of GaN:ZnO from minutes to 40 h. These findings not only provide pioneering mechanistic insights and a robust strategy for enhancing the PEC performance of GaN:ZnO, but also establish a holistic approach to probing the prevalent stability issue of the oxynitride photocatalysts.

Multifunctional composite artificial interface layer endows highly stable Zn anodes

Zhuowei He,Chundong Dong,Doudou Zhang,Xiaowei Lv,Panpan Sun,Xiaohua Sun

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are regarded as energy storage devices with excellent development prospects, attributed to their high theoretical capacity, low cost, and favorable safety profile. Nevertheless, challenges such as severe dendrite and hydrogen evolution reactions on the zinc anode have significantly hindered the practical applications of aqueous zinc-ion battery devices. In this study, a Bi 2 S 3 -NC composite artificial interfacial layer was fabricated on the surface of the zinc electrode to modulate the thermodynamics and kinetics of zinc ion deposition/stripping reactions, thereby enabling a stable zinc anode. The experimental findings indicated that the hydrophobic Bi 2 S 3 -NC composite artificial interfacial layer could effectively suppress the occurrence of side reactions. Simultaneously, it regulated the desolvation ability of zinc ions and reaction kinetics, significantly reducing the nucleation energy barrier for zinc (the nucleation overpotential at a current density of 2 mA cm −2 decreased from 87.1 mV to 32.2 mV), thereby facilitating uniform zinc ion deposition. Ex-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and in-situ optical microscopy characterizations further confirmed that the Bi 2 S 3 -NC protective layer could effectively inhibit the growth of zinc dendrites. Consequently, the modified Bi 2 S 3 -NC@Zn symmetric cell could cycle for more than 3200 h under the conditions of 2 mA cm −2 and 0.5 mAh cm −2 , and the overpotential was also significantly reduced (from 88.5 mV to 29.8 mV). Meanwhile, the Zn//Cu half-cell assembled with Bi 2 S 3 -NC@Zn could still maintain a coulombic efficiency of 99.69% after 270 cycles. Additionally, the full cell assembled with Bi 2 S 3 -NC@Zn and an Mn 2 V 2 O 7 cathode also demonstrated outstanding cycling stability (retained 115.7 mAh g −1 after 1400 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 ), far exceeding the 64.3 mAh g −1 of the bare Zn cell. This study proposes a simple and effective modification strategy for zinc anodes, providing a reference for the multi-dimensional improvement of zinc anode performance.

High-Performance Rechargeable Anionic Zn–Cu Batteries with Facile Recyclability

Yan Wu,Huaqing Zhang,Dechen Dong,Peng Liang,Yuanzhuo Li,Jiajie Zheng,Xichen Zhou,Jingwen Zhou,Yilin Sun,Zhikang Deng,Shuting Fu,Mingyue Wang,Xiantao Hu,Zuochao Wang,Zijian Jiang,Haoran Liu,Hongjie Dai

Abstract Aqueous batteries with high safety are ideal large-scale energy storage systems, but still face challenges in cycle life, self-discharge, cost, and environment-related issues. Here, we report a rechargeable aqueous zinc–copper battery with high performance, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. We employed widely available metal foils as electrodes and developed a novel zinc–bromide and cuprous–bromide complex anion-containing anolyte and catholyte, respectively, separated by a cation exchange membrane (CEM), utilizing strong coordination between soft bromide ions and zinc/cuprous ions. The battery exhibited a high areal capacity of 4 mAh/cm2 with stable cycling over 2700 h (>900 cycles), energy efficiency up to ∼90%, excellent 99.6% capacity retention against self-discharge over 3 days, and facile scalability to Ah-level Zn/Cu batteries. Importantly, all elements were recycled at the end of the battery cycle life by simple, cost-effective processes with recovery efficiencies of ∼97% for Zn and ∼100% for Cu. This drastically lowered the battery cost and made the anionic Zn–Cu (AZC) battery promising for energy storage at a low cost with high performance and long-term sustainability.

Colossal permittivity in TiO2 ceramics modified by Ta and Zn

Yuhui Wan,Jiachen Song,Fuxue Yan,Xu Lu,Shu Yang,Yonggui Shi,Pengrong Ren

Zn and Ta co-doped TiO 2 ceramics with the nominal composition (Zn 1/3 Ta 2/3 ) x Ti 1-x O 2 ) were prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method. Phase analysis revealed that all samples consisted of a single rutile-type TiO 2 phase, exhibiting a dense microstructure and uniform grain size. At a doping level of x = 0.005, the material exhibited excellent dielectric properties. Specifically, at room temperature and 1 kHz, its dielectric permittivity reached 3.93 × 10 4 , with a dielectric loss of 0.031. Over the temperature range from −60 °C to 200 °C, the variation in the dielectric permittivity was less than 15%, while the dielectric loss remained below 0.02 between −60 °C and 112 °C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to analyze the valence states of the constituent elements. Impedance spectroscopy and bias-voltage measurement, together with the XPS analysis, revealed the coexistence of multiple mechanisms in Zn and Ta co-doped TiO 2 ceramics Electron-pinned defect-dipole (EPDD) polarization was identified as the primary origin of the colossal dielectric behavior, while Maxwell-Wagner polarization also contributed to the dielectric response.

Gradient Zn-doped HfCeOx ferroelectric synapse with fast domain switching

Junhui Wang,Jiajia Liao,Tongkun Zhu,Zhipeng Wang,Qiong Yang,Hongze Liu,Shijie Jia,Jin Huang,Sirui Zhang,Jiayi Hu,Jie Jiang,Limei Jiang,Yichun Zhou

Ferroelectric synaptic devices are pivotal in artificial intelligence applications, particularly for image recognition tasks. Their outstanding capabilities in neuromorphic information processing, biologically plausible signal emulation, and faithful neural mimicry render them indispensable. However, for HfO 2 -based ferroelectric synaptic devices, concurrently attaining high remnant polarization and rapid domain switching which are essential for high-speed processing and precise pattern recognition remains a formidable challenge. In this study, gradient Zn-doped HfCeO x (Zn: HCO) ferroelectric film was fabricated. It displays enhanced ferroelectric properties with a remnant polarization (2 P r ) reaching 77.2 µC/cm 2 . High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyzes and phase-field simulations reveal that the gradient Zn doping induces a flexoelectric effect in HfCeO x thin films, which promotes the formation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase. Additionally, this gradient design accelerates domain switching speed by enhancing the domain wall mobility under applied electric fields. To demonstrate the neuromorphic computing potential, we implemented an artificial neural network using Pt/Zn: HCO/p + -Si synaptic devices, achieving an 86.5 % recognition accuracy in standard pattern classification tasks. This work establishes a viable strategy for simultaneously enhancing both ferroelectric polarization and switching speed in HfO 2 -based memory and neuromorphic devices.

Leveraging cation effect for low temperature aqueous Zn-based batteries

Feng Doudou,Xie Yanchun,Jiao Yucong,Wu Peiyi

Anion‒water interactions in aqueous electrolytes can lower the freezing point for antifreezing applications, yet cation‒water interactions have usually been ignored. Here, we propose that the cation effect of Al 3+ can simultaneously exert a deshielding effect on both H and O in water, which significantly weakens the water hydrogen bond and lowers the freezing point to −117 o C at a low salt concentration of 2.8 m. Additionally, dual-cation effects further optimize the ion diffusion kinetics and facilitate the formation of an Al‒Zn alloy layer for Zn electrode safeguarding. As demonstrated in batteries, the designed electrolyte enables the symmetrical Zn||Zn coin cell for 10,340 h of Zn plating/stripping and Zn||polyaniline pouch cell with a capacity retention of 100% after 500 cycles at 100 mA g -1 and −70 o C. Even at −80 o C, the Zn||polyaniline cell delivers a discharge capacity of 115.5 mA h g -1 . The cation effect offers an effective strategy for regulating the water structure of low-temperature aqueous devices.
