Efficient removal of multiple heavy metals (HMs) from industrial wastewater remains challenging due to the coexistence and competition of ions. This study comparatively evaluates metakaolin-based (MK-GP) and fly ash-based (FA-GP) geopolymers synthesized at a constant Si-modulus (1.4), aiming to clarify their sorption performance and competitive mechanisms toward Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Ni 2+ . Comprehensive characterization revealed that MK-GP sorbents developed a more reactive aluminosilicate framework and a four-fold larger surface area than FA-GP sorbents, enabling markedly higher sorption capacities. Batch experiments across mono-, binary-, ternary-, and quaternary-metal systems demonstrated a consistent affinity sequence of Pb 2+ > Zn 2+ > Cd 2+ > Ni 2+ , with pronounced competitive suppression in multi-ion environments. Column transport experiments further confirmed the preferential retention of Pb 2+ and the accelerated breakthrough of Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Ni 2+ under flow conditions. Mechanistic analysis indicated that sorption is governed by synergistic surface complexation and pore-controlled diffusion, influenced by hydrated ionic radii and hydrolysis behavior. Overall, this work provides a systematic comparison of two widely used GP sorbents and offers mechanistic insights that can inform the rational design of GP-based technologies for complex industrial wastewater treatment.

With the growing demand for sustainable energy, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted considerable attention as an emerging energy-storage technology owing to their low cost and high safety. However, one of the most widely used cathode materials of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) for AZIBs suffers from unstable electrochemical performance of sluggish zinc-ion diffusion and gradual structural degradation. To solve these problems, we propose a simple in-situ pre-intercalation strategy to construct lysine-functionalized δ-MnO 2 (Lys-MnO 2 ), thereby reinforcing the structural stability and boosting the electrochemical performance of MnO 2 . XRD and HRTEM characterizations, combined with GITT and EIS analyses, demonstrate that lysine molecules effectively increase the interlayer spacing of MnO 2 and facilitate zinc-ion diffusion. Electrochemical tests show that the Lys-MnO 2 cathode exhibits the markedly enhanced cycling performance. It maintains a reversible capacity of over 274 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 and retains 92.7% of its capacity even after 900 cycles at 1 A g −1 , superior to those of the pristine MnO 2 cathode. This work provides an innovative route for the development of high-performance and long-lifespan manganese-based cathode materials for AZIBs.

An injectable BZUCNPs-PACMSNs/PGB sensor was proposed to detect AFB 1 . • BPEI was coated on ZUCNPs to improve the water-soluble ability of ZUCNPs • A dual-gated strategy was presented to improve the stability of UCNPs sensor. • BPEI@Cu 2+ can effectively quench the fluorescence of ZUCNPs due to IFE. • Injectable PGB hydrogel was utilized for stable and on-site AFB 1 detection. An expanding presence of aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) contamination across the global food supply represents a serious threat to public health. This work developed a portable sensor using Zn 2+ -doped upconversion nanoparticles (ZUCNPs) that Cu 2+ -induced fluorescence quenching with an injectable polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin/borax (PGB) hydrogel. First, ZUCNPs exhibiting enhanced fluorescence were modified with branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) to form signal probes known as BZUCNPs. Additionally, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were fabricated via sol-gel methods, loaded with Cu 2+ and coated with aptamer (Apt) and polydopamine (PDA) to create dual-gated capture probes (PACMSNs). Afterwards, BZUCNPs and PACMSNs were mixed to form sensing probes and then integrated into the PGB hydrogel, forming the final sensor (BZUCNPs-PACMSNs/PGB). In the presence of AFB 1 at pH 5.5, the AFB 1 diffused into the PGB hydrogel, disrupting the PDA and Apt layer due to acid environment and changing the structure of Apt as AFB 1 specifically bound to it. Then, Cu 2+ released and facilitated the formation of BPEI@Cu 2+ complex on the surface of ZUCNPs, which produced inner filter effect (IFE) that quenched fluorescence. When experimental conditions were optimized, a pronounced linear calibration curve ( R 2 = 0.994) was observed, linking fluorescence to the logarithm of AFB 1 levels across a 0.1–100 μg/kg AFB 1 range. And its sensitivity was characterized with a detection limit of 0.03 μg/kg. Furthermore, the sensor's applicability was confirmed through analysis of food matrices, including wheat, corn, peanuts, and water, yielding high analytical accuracy with relative standard deviations below 6.08% and recovery rates ranging from 93.77% to 107.67%.

Aqueous zinc‑iodine batteries (AZIBs) have been considered due to the significant potential for multi-electron transfer reactions and a high theoretical capacity of 211 mAh g −1 and a considerable output potential. Nevertheless, aqueous Zn I 2 batteries face some formidable challenges in conventional aqueous electrolytes, including catastrophic Zn dendrite hyperplasia and severe parasitic reactions, and terrible shuttle effect of polyiodides. To address these concerns, it has been recognized that hydrogel electrolyte (HE) can effectively block the active water molecules and coordinate with Zn 2+ , thus inhibiting the growth of zinc dendrites and meanwhile can mitigate the shuttle effects. Herein, anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel electrolyte with immobilization of organic molecule of amber acid with carboxyl functional groups elaborately designed with bifunctional mechanism to address the adverse reactions simultaneously on both Zn anode and I 2 cathode. The immobilization of organic additives can build suitable ion transport highways for the modulation of Zn 2+ and polyiodides transport kinetics toward ultra-stable aqueous Zn I 2 Batteries. Eventually, as a proof of demonstration, the assembled PAM/AA based aqueous Zn I 2 cell can yield an remarkable rate performance and a high and maintained capacity of 138 mAh g −1 over 15,000 cycles with a negligible decay rate of 0.005 ‰ per cycle at a high current of 5 Ag −1 .

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) are accumulative and toxic for the environment, causing one of the recognized social problems, while some metal ions have positive applications in the prognosis of diseases. Therefore, there is a necessity to achieve rapid, convenient, highly efficient determination of HMIs. In this work, a novel composite, CAU-17/CSG, consisting of CAU-17 and cellulose graphene (CSG) is synthesized via in situ growth method and serves as an effective electrochemical sensor. Taking advantages of the high catalytic activity of Bi in CAU-17 and the good synergy between CAU-17 and CSG , CAU-17/CSG exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity to achieve individual and simultaneous detection of low concentrations of Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in aqueous solutions. The limits of detection (LOD) for Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ are 0.029, 0.008 and 0.011 μM (S/N = 3), with linear ranges of 0.3–10, 0.01–2 and 0.03–2 μM, respectively. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits good stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability. As expected, CAU-17/CSG exhibits good accuracy in detecting metal ions in water and blood samples. Considering the simple preparation method, stable structure and excellent performance, the prepared composites will have great potential for environmental and biomedical applications.

In this paper, graphdiyne (GDY)−modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared and further used for the sensitive and simultaneous detection of three target heavy metal ions of Zn2+, Cd2+and Hg2+by codeposition with Bi3+in the mixture solution. GDY−modified electrodes exhibit a larger electrode area and abundant active sites, which is favorable for absorbing more metal ions. Bismuth has low toxicity and can form alloys with zinc, cadmium and mercury. Therefore, three kinds of heavy metal ions can be pre-concentrated with bismuth on the GDY−modified electrode surface, and the following stripping analysis results in high sensitivity and selectivity. By using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the detection ranges of Zn2+, Cd2+and Hg2+were from 2.0 to 100.0 μM with low detection limits of 0.255 μM, 0.367 μM and 0.796 μM, respectively. In addition, the sensor showed excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and stability, which was applied to sensitive analysis of river water samples with satisfactory results. Keywords:graphdiyne;bismuth;heavy metal ions;electrochemistry;differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry

Currently, the development of polyvalent ions battery systems are still restricted by lacking suitable cathode materials with high energy density and long cycle life attributing to sluggish kinetic mechanism and of polyvalent ions. Herein, an effective inter-layer scaling strategy is proposed by using a simple hydrothermal method . The super layer spacing VS 2 (∼1 nm) cathode dramatically improves electrochemical performance of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) and magnesium/lithium hybrid ion batteries (MLIBs). The specific discharge capacities of ZIBs and MLIBs are 450.7 and 488.8 mA h g −1 at current density of 0.1 A g −1 which are much higher than the same type of battery systems. Finally, the diffusion mechanism and the corresponding theoretical model is established by adopting first principles . In brief, the work provides an effective strategy for the large scale application of multivalent and hybrid batteries systems.

A near-infrared nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dot (N,S-CD)-based ratiometric fluorescent probe is proposed that is synthesized via hydrothermal approach using glutathione and formamide as precursor for sensing and imaging of Zn 2+ . The prepared N,S-CDs facilitate binding with Zn 2+ owing to N and S atom doping. The ratio (I 650 /I 680 ) of fluorescence intensity at 650 nm and 680 nm increased with the concentrations of Zn 2+ when the excitation wavelength was 415 nm. The linearity range was 0.01 to 1.0 μM Zn 2+ with a detection limit of 5.0 nM Zn 2+ . The proposed probe was applied to label-free monitoring of Zn 2+ in real samples and fluorescent imaging of Zn 2+ in living cells, which confirmed its promising applications. Graphical abstract

Developing membranes that combine excellent gas separation performance with robust resistance to plasticization is highly demanded for membrane separation but remains a challenge. Herein, a series of Zn 2+ functionalized poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) membrane was constructed via co-polymerizing (4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) with o-hydroxyl diamine 2,2′-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane (BisAPAF) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) followed by thermal rearrangement (TR) and Zn 2+ modification processes. The TR conversion opened the polymer chains with larger d-spacing and higher BET surface area, thus, greatly increased the gas permeability . Meanwhile, the post Zn 2+ modification resulted in a huge improved selectivity because of the π-complexation reactions between Zn 2+ and CO 2 and the formation of a Zn 2+ coordination crosslinking network. As a result, due to the synergistic effect of TR and Zn 2+ modification, the overall gas transport properties of these newly developed membranes were greatly improved. Furthermore, the dual network structures that arise from the remaining network PI and the Zn 2+ coordination crosslinking contribute to the resultant membrane with excellent anti-plasticization capability. A represent membrane termed as PBOI-Zn 2+ -14h membrane exhibits great CO 2 /CH 4 separation performance, delivering a CO 2 permeability of 1048.1 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 46.1 that is exceeded the 2008 Roberson limitation. Furthermore, this membrane possesses remarkable resistance to CO 2 -induced plasticization, withstanding pressures above 35 Bar. Overall, this study presents an effective way for constructing polymer membranes with both high gas separation performance and strong resistance to plasticization issue.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for energy storage applications require a large discharge energy density and high discharge/charge efficiency under high electric fields. Here, 0.87BaTiO 3 -0.13Bi(Zn 2/3 (Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 ) 1/3 )O 3 (BTBZNT) MLCCs with double active dielectric layers were fabricated, and the effects of inner electrode and sintering method on the energy storage properties of BTBZNT MLCCs were investigated. By using the pure Pt as inner electrode instead of Ag 0.6 Pd 0.4 alloys, an alternating current (AC) breakdown strength ( BDS ) enhancement from 1047 to 1500 kV/cm was achieved. By investigating the leakage current behavior of BTBZNT MLCCs, the Pt inner electrode and two-step sintering method (TSS) were confirmed to enhance the Schottky barrier and minimize the leakage current density. With relatively high permittivity, dielectric sublinearity, and ultra-high BDS , the Pt TSS BTBZNT MLCCs exhibited a surprisingly discharge energy density ( U dis ) of 14.08 J/cm 3 . Moreover, under an operating electric field of 400 kV/cm, the MLCCs also exhibited thermal stability with U dis variation < ±8% over a wide temperature ( t ) range from -50 to 175 °C and cycling reliability with U dis reduction < 0.3% after 3000 charge-discharge cycles. These remarkable performances make Pt TSS BTBZNT MLCCs promising for energy storage applications.

The Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ co-doped CeO 2 -based solid solutions were synthesized via hydrothermal method . The microstructure and the spectra features of the solid solutions were characterized systematically. The XRD results showed that the dopants were incorporated into the CeO 2 lattice to form Ce 1-x Cu 0.5x Zn 0.5x O 2 solid solutions when x was lower than 0.14. The cell parameters and the crystalline size decreased linearly, and the lattice strain gradually increased with increasing the doping level. The TEM patterns showed that the particle size in the solid solution was lower than 10 nm which is in accordance with the XRD results. The ICP analysis indicated that the real doped content in the solid solution was close to the nominal proportion. XPS proved that the Ce 3+ component was increased by doping. The Raman and PL spectra indicated that the lattice distortion and the oxygen vacancies also increased following the same trend. At the same time, the synergistic effects of two ions co-doped solid solutions were studied by comparing them with that of single ions doped samples. The catalysis effects of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ co-doped CeO 2 -based solid solutions on the hydrogen storage electrochemical and kinetic properties of Mg 2 Ni alloys were detected. The electrochemistry properties of the Mg 2 Ni-Ni-5 wt% Ce 1-x Cu 0.5x Zn 0.5x O 2 composites indicated that the doped catalysts could provide better optimizations to improve the maximum discharge capacities and the discharge potentials. On the other hand, the charge transfer abilities on the surface and diffusion rate of H atoms in the bulk of alloys also got improved. The DSC measurements showed that the hydrogen desorption activation of the hydrogenated composites with Ce 0.88 Cu 0.06 Zn 0.06 O 2 solid solutions decreased to 77.03 kJ mol −1 , while that of the composites with pure CeO 2 was 97.62 kJ mol −1 . The catalysis effect was enhanced by the doped content increase that means that the catalysis mechanism had close links to the oxygen vacancy concentration and the lattice defects in the solid solutions. On the other hand, the doped Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions could also play an important role in the catalytic process.

The rock salt structured Li 2 Mg 1-x Zn x TiO 4 ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state method. X-ray diffraction, bond energy and Raman spectra were employed to investigate the crystal structure and polarization characteristics of the ceramics. With the x value increasing from 0 to 0.5, the dielectric constant of Li 2 Mg 1-x Zn x TiO 4 gradually increased from 15.36 to 18.42, which was attributed to the higher polarizability of zinc ions . The variation trend of the polarizability was also in accordance with that of Raman vibration modes. The quality factor of specimens initially increased and then significantly decreased with the increase in Zn 2+ substitution, which could be explained in the variation of packing fraction. In addition, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency showed a tendency of decrease with the decreasing bond energy, implying that the substitution of Zn 2+ influenced the crystal stability of Li 2 MgTiO 4 . An appropriate amount of zinc substitution effectively improved the dielectric permittivity and decreased the dielectric losses of the matrix. The Li 2 Mg 0.9 Zn 0.1 TiO 4 ceramics sintered at 1350 °C possessed excellent microwave dielectric properties with ε r = 16.20, Q·ƒ = 145,200 GHz and τ f = −4.03 ppm/°C, which made these ceramics promising for future applications.
