Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions can efficiently promote the separation of photogenerated carriers while maintaining the strong oxidation/reduction ability of photocatalysts; thus, research attention on S-scheme heterojunctions is increasing year by year. In this study, the S-scheme ZnO@ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZnO@ZIS) heterojunction was prepared successfully. Then, electron spin resonance (ESR) characterization was applied to prove the successful construction of the S-scheme heterojunction. Photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), and photoelectrochemical experiments have demonstrated efficient interfacial charge transport in ZnO@ZIS. Finally, the mechanism of CO 2 activation and electron transport was investigated by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) calculation analysis. The 40-ZnO@ZIS composite showed the best activity under light, and its CO and CH 4 yields reached 39.76 and 3.92 μmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 , respectively. This study provides a solution for optimizing the photocatalytic reduction activity of semiconductor photocatalysts by constructing S-scheme heterojunction materials to improve the CO 2 reduction capacity.

To effectively separate electron-hole pairs produced by light, a heterojunction arrangement can be employed, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, a simple hydrothermal process is used to manufacture carbonized polymer dots/ZnIn 2 S 4 (CPDs/ZIS) heterostructure, which enhances the light absorption and charge carrier lifetime in comparison to bare ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS). Upon irradiation with visible light, the 3-CPDs/ZIS composite generates hydrogen at a rate of 133 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 8.9 times faster than that of pure ZIS. The addition of CPDs can increase the range of light that can be absorbed, extend the service life of the optical charge, increase the specific surface area, and promote charge separation and transmission, which could effectively accelerate the photocatalytic reduction reaction. The presence of CPDs results in the introduction of multiple transition energy states and a decrease in the H* adsorption free energy, which enhances the hydrogen evolution activity according to the theoretical calculation findings of density functional theory (DFT) and Gibbs free energy of the hydrogen evolution process. Combining theoretical calculations and experimental results, a direct Z-type heterojunction mechanism is proposed for the hydrogen evolution promotion effectiveness of CPDs/ZIS under visible light.

Hydrogen energy is regarded as the clean energy alternative for fossil energy. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a sustainable way for the production of hydrogen energy. However, commercial platinum (Pt) catalysts for HER are expensive and scarce, which will not fully meet the demand of the future market. Therefore, scientists have been actively exploring alternatives to Pt-based catalysts. Studies have shown that palladium (Pd) and Pt have similar catalytic activity in HER. Small molecular Pd nanoclusters can be used as a perfect HER activity center. Herein, anchoring of Pd nanoclusters (Pd NCs) on sulfur-vacancy-enriched ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (Pd/ZIS-T) has been successfully achieved. The zeta potential value for ZnIn 2 S 4 is −59.9 mV, indicating that the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 is abundant negatively charged in deionized water, thus providing plentiful anchoring sites to absorb Pd 2+ . The results show that the synergistic effect of Pd NCs and sulfur vacancies will endow the obtained catalyst with excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability. It also managed to reducing costs by reducing noble metal content. In particular, the Pd/ZIS-T electrocatalyst with excellent performance delivered low overpotential of 25 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and small Tafel slope of 33 mV dec -1 in acidic electrolyte.

ZnIn2S4(ZIS) is widely used in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production due to its unique photoelectric properties. Nonetheless, the photocatalytic performance of ZIS usually faces problems of poor conductivity and rapid recombination of charge carriers. Heteroatom doping is often regarded as one of the effective strategies for improving the catalytic activity of photocatalysts. Herein, phosphorus (P)-doped ZIS was prepared by hydrothermal method, whose photocatalytic hydrogen production performance and energy band structure were fully studied. The band gap of P-doped ZIS is about 2.51 eV, which is slightly smaller than that of pure ZIS. Moreover, due to the upward shift of its energy band, the reduction ability of P-doped ZIS is enhanced, and P-doped ZIS also exhibits stronger catalytic activity than pure ZIS. The optimized P-doped ZIS exhibits a hydrogen production rate of 1566.6 μmol g−1h−1, which is 3.8 times that of the pristine ZIS (411.1 μmol g−1h−1). This work provides a broad platform for the design and synthesis of phosphorus-doped sulfide-based photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.Keywords:ZnIn2S4;phosphorus doping;photocatalytic;hydrogen generation

The development of photocatalyst is essential for achieving efficient photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production . Therefore, a novel Mo 2 N (MN) decorated ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) with sulfur-rich vacancy (Sv-ZIS) photocatalyst was rationally constructed via a facile calcining-hydrothermal method for efficient photocatalytic H 2 production. The optimized photocatalyst exhibits an outstanding photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 10.28 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 7.52 and 3.11 times higher than that of bare ZIS and S V -ZnIn 2 S 4 (S V -ZIS), respectively. The characterizations reveal that the presence of MN and S-vacancies improves the light absorption capacity, and facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) have confirmed that MN can optimize ΔG H* to approach 0, which is favorable for photocatalytic hydrogen production . Therefore, the combined effect of MN and S-vacancies facilitates efficient photocatalytic H 2 production of S V -ZIS/MN.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is a reliable way to mitigate the energy crisis. In this work, ZnIn 2 S 4 , which has great development prospects, is selected as the photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. At the same time, in order to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 , a novel high-entropy metal phosphide (HEMP) catalyst with abundant active sites was compounded with ZnIn 2 S 4 . The designed direct Z-scheme HEMP/ZnIn 2 S 4 , heterojunction demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic activity and superior stability for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The 10% HEMP-0/ZnIn 2 S 4 sample exhibited the best photocatalytic performance with a hydrogen evolution rate of 4630.21 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is 3.29 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The excellent photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the accelerated reaction kinetics, the accumulation of electrons and holes with strong reduction and oxidation abilities and the inhibition of photogenerated electron-hole pairs of the Z-scheme heterojunction. This work achieved the first application of high-entropy metal phosphides in the field of photocatalysis , not only offering a new strategy to optimize the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 but also paving the way for the application of high-entropy materials in photocatalysis.

Rational constructing hierarchical core–shell structured photocatalysts to accelerate the separation and transfer of light-induced electrons is extraordinarily indispensable to boost the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, we integrate two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) nanosheets and flower-like CoS 1.097 assembled with one-dimensional (1D) nanothorns to construct hierarchical 1D/2D CoS 1.097 @ZIS with ZIS nanosheets and CoS 1.097 nanothorns as shell and core respectively as an effective visible light photocatalyst to produce hydrogen from water splitting. The optimized 8.5-CoS 1.097 @ZIS photocatalyst demonstrates an outstanding activity with hydrogen production rate of 2632.33 µmol g −1 h −1 (6.42 times of ZIS alone) and good stability for photocatalytic water splitting. The enhanced performance can be ascribed to the distinctive structure and composition of CoS 1.097 @ZIS, which affords intimate contact interface, strong light absorption and abundant reaction sites, thus facilitating the separation and transfer of the charge carriers as well as inhibiting charge recombination. This work offers a prospective approach to construct 1D/2D core–shell ZIS-based photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water splitting.

Photocatalytic technology still faces enormous challenges to design and synthesize highly efficient photocatalytic materials with a high electron/hole separation efficiency, rapid charge migration, low carrier recombination rate, and strong visible light-harvesting capability. Herein, Cu-doped ZnIn2S4/NixP (marked CuyZIS/NP) composites were successfully synthesized by a simple two-step method. The synergistic effect of Cu2+ doping and the NixP cocatalyst on hydrogen evolution performance was investigated in detail. The results showed that superior photoactivity over CuyZIS/NP composites was achieved. The optimal Cu0.5ZIS/NP-1/2 sample had a hydrogen evolution rate of 4746.3 μmol·g–1·h–1 under visible light irradiation, which was approximately 15.98 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4 (297 μmol·g–1·h–1). This work may offer a valuable insight into understanding the synergistic effect of doping and cocatalysis and provide a guideline for designing and developing highly efficient visible light-driven photocatalysts toward a water splitting system.

In this work, the heterostructure of CoS x /Ag/Ag 2 S/ZnIn 2 S 4 (CAAZ) was synthesized by photodeposition reaction, cation exchange and low temperature solvothermal reaction. The degradation kinetic constants of TC and MO by CAAZ-3 within 60 min were 2.5 and 7.1 times that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively, and CAAZ-3 still maintained good catalytic activity after 5 cycles. ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet is attached to the surface of CoS x hollow structure, which increases the reactive active site and improves the efficiency of light utilization. Notably, the introduction of Ag/Ag 2 S nanoparticles accelerates the conduction rate of photogenerated charge between the interfaces, which is consistent with the results of photochemical tests. It was found that the synergistic interaction of •O 2 - and h + played an important role in the degradation process of TC molecules. This study focuses on the development of photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants and theoretically demonstrates the importance of optimizing conductive interfaces for improving photocatalytic activity.

MIL-101(Cr)@ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterojunction was delicately designed and fabricated through the in-situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 on MIL-101 and electrostatic self-assembly. It is affirmed that the Cr–S interface bonding between MIL-101 and ZnIn 2 S 4 in their composite was established based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman and zeta potential . Thus, a high-speed channel for charges transfer is offered due to the Cr–S bond, intimate interface contact and hierarchical structure of MIL-101@ZnIn 2 S 4 , which largely inhibits the recombination of photo-induced charge carriers and promises a remarkable photocatalytic activity . Choosing visible-light-driven reduction of Cr(VI) as a model, the optimal MIL-101@ZnIn 2 S 4 sample can reduce 95% of Cr(VI) within 30 min, corresponding to a rate constant of 0.107 min −1 , which is 2.9-fold compared with blank ZnIn 2 S 4 counterpart (MIL-101 has a negligible performance). Additionally, a conspicuous apparent quantum yield of 9.7% can be achieved at a wavelength of 420 nm. Eventually, to reinforce the practicability of MIL-101@ZnIn 2 S 4 , the composite powders were manufactured as aerogels utilizing bacterial cellulose as a substrate. The MIL-101@ZnIn 2 S 4 aerogel still exerts an enviable performance for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and stability. This work could inspire the material design and environmental remediation based on MOFs.

TiO 2 nanosheet is a fruitful paradigm for a wide variety of photocatalytic applications due to its characteristics of high photoactivity, robust stability, and environmental friendliness. However, its pragmatic utilization for visible light photocatalytic energy conversion still remains challenging owing to the wide bandgap. Herein, a 2D/3D TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 nanostructure was purposively constructed via a microwave-assisted synthesis, with ZnIn 2 S 4 functioned as a photosensitizer to overcome the lack of visible light response capacity for TiO 2 . The optimal TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 sample exhibits an excellent photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity with a rate of 1167.38 μmol/g/h under visible light illumination, far beyond that of pristine TiO 2 nanosheet (6.78 μmol/g/h) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (378.51 μmol/g/h). The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to synergy effects of the extended visible light response, compatible band alignment, and fast charge carrier separation. The in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to systematically study the transfer behavior of photo-induced electrons; the results highlighted that the flow direction of photoexcited charges is from ZnIn 2 S 4 to TiO 2 nanosheets due to the strong interfacial contact. Then both ZnIn 2 S 4 and TiO 2 nanosheets can act as the active sites for proton reduction, which therefore boosts the hydrogen production under visible irradiation. This work opens a new venue for the development of flexible photosensitization systems for solar-driven energy conversion.

An efficient visible light responsive ZnIn 2 S 4 @NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe/Co 0.75 ) nanocomposite was prepared for photocatalytic hydrogen production application. Under visible light irradiation, the ZnIn 2 S 4 @NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe/Co 0.75 ) photocatalyst displayed improved photocatalytic performance and the hydrogen production rate reached to 161724.8 μmol/g in 6 h. The nanocomposite with large specific surface area and mesoporous structure increased the light absorption, improved the electrons transfer and suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus exhibiting efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The controllable synthesis of ZnIn 2 S 4 @NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe/Co 0.75 ) nanocomposite as a high-efficiency photocatalyst would have broad prospect for water splitting hydrogen production application.
