Low-toxicity, highly luminescent, and water-soluble AgInS2/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized via a microwave-assisted approach. The structure and optical features of the AgInS2/ZnS NCs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The as-synthesized AgInS2/ZnS NCs exhibited high PL quantum yields (40%) and long PL lifetimes (424.5 ns). Furthermore, the dynamic changes of the intracellular copper(II) levels in HeLa cells were monitored using the AgInS2/ZnS NCs as fluorescent probes. The results showed that the AgInS2/ZnS NCs as promising fluorescent probes can be used in the detection of intracellular copper ions in living cells.

Hydrophobic ZnSe:Mn/ZnS core-shell fluorescence quantum dots (QDs) and anticancer drug paclitaxel (PTX) have been co-loaded into folate conjugated hybrid silica nanocapsules via F127 micelles based soft-template method in a mild aqueous environment at room temperature . The encapsulation of QDs shows a F127: QDs mass ratio dependent behavior, which impact much on the morphology and optical properties of composite nanocapsules . These as prepared composite nanocapsules also exhibit good photoluminescence stability under the temperature ranges from 19 °C to 49 °C. In addition, the aqueous solubility of PTX (0.1 μg/mL) can be efficiently enhanced about 630 times to 62.99 μg/mL, and the loaded PTX could be released during 12 h sustainably. These tunable fluorescence, enhanced drug loading efficiency and sustained release behavior manifest that the hybrid nanocapsule is a promising theranostic nanoplatform for future combined fluorescence imaging and chemotherapy.

Developing a green and economical synthetic strategy for ZnS nanotubes is of great interest. In this work, ZnS nanotubes are successfully fabricated using only three raw materials (Zn(CH3COO)2, NaHCO3 and Na2S) through a simple two step synthetic route at ambient temperature. It is worth noting that the process is economical and environmentally friendly, without the need for high pressure or elevated temperature conditions. Interestingly, a very obvious feature is the existence of abundant sulfur surface defects on the as-prepared ZnS nanotubes, which not only produces strong defect-related fluorescence properties, but also leads to abundant water adsorbed on the surface of zinc sulfide. Furthermore, the as-prepared ZnS nanotubes as an adsorbent are exploited in the adsorption of organic dyes. Notably, the resultant products display superior selective adsorption ability for anionic dyes with amine (–NH2/NH) functional groups over a wide pH range through the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction between the dye molecules and the adsorbent. Taking CR dye as an example, the maximum adsorption capacity for the removal of Congo red reaches 724.6 mg g−1 in water, much higher than many composite adsorbents reported in the literature. Thus, the present study not only presents a promising strategy for fabrication of ZnS nanotubes but also indicates their great potential application as environmentally friendly adsorbents in organic dye separation technologies or dye removal.

Recently, CuInS 2 /ZnS nanocrystals (CISZ NCs) have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent properties, such as tunable photoluminescence (PL) spectra, broad absorption, and non-toxicity. In order to expand the application of CISZ NCs, Gd 3+ was introduced into the host serving as paramagnetic modules to achieve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement. MRI probes could provide high-resolution anatomical information. The derived Gd-Cu-In-S/ZnS nanocrystals (GCISZNCs) exhibited the strong orange photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 57.6% and significantly high longitudinal relaxivity ( r 1 =20.4 mmol/s) in comparison with commercial Magnevist (Gd-DTPA, r 1 =4.5 mmol/s). Effective enhancement of MRI and improved longitudinal relaxivity as well as lower cytotoxicity mode GCISZ NCs an ideal MRI probe, suggesting its potential and significance in practical biological and clinic applications in the future.

The construction of heterojunction for photocatalysis has garnered much research interest. Herein, we report the successful fabrication of a ternary dual S-scheme ZnO/ZnS/In 2 S 3 heterojunction with a higher photocatalytic capacity via a hydrothermal method . Specifically, the optimized ternary heterojunction ZSI0.35 sample achieves the 100 % photodegradation efficiency of RhB (10 mg/L, 50 mL) within 10 min, approximately 17 and 8 times higher than pure ZnO and ZnO/ZnS binary heterojunction, respectively. Further characterization results confirm the dual S-scheme heterojunction structure in the fabricated ZnO/ZnS/In 2 S 3 ternary heterojunction, and the improvement of photocatalytic properties can be attributed to the enhanced Brunauer Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, the improved redox capacity of the photocatalyst, and the quick charge transfer. Additionally, the possible photocatalytic mechanism is discussed according to the measurements. This work provides an efficient strategy of promising heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalytic environmental remediation.

A binary composite of metal sulfides (MS) is directly synthesized on nickel foam through hydrothermal process, resulting in snow like nanosphere suitable for hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). Herein, a ZnS/CdS binary composite has been grown directly on nickel foam using a simple hydrothermal method. The structural features, morphological characteristics and electrochemical performance of the composite are systematically investigated. Especially, the highest capacitance of 739–325 F/g at 1–10 A/g was attained with good rate performance. Moreover, a binder-less ZnS/CdS/NF composite achieved a high power of 5030 W/kg at 42 Wh/kg energy density by realizing an expanded voltage to 1.8 V with decent durability. Interestingly, a 92.84 % retention was noticed after 6500 cycles, which indicates high performance stability of the ZnS/CdS/NF||AC HSC. These outcomes reveal the promising prospect of all-metal sulfide utilization for next-generation energy storage devices.

The wavelength tunable and environmentally friendly InP quantum dots are considered one of the most powerful alternatives to cadmium-based quantum dots, and the luminescent devices prepared with them also show great potential. There is still room for improvement in the synthesis methods and device applications of InP based quantum dots. In this work, we report one pot synthesis route for InP/ZnSe/ZnSeS/ZnS green QDs based on tris(dimethylamino)phosphine (DMP) phosphorus by using the strategy of multi shell coating and gradient heating to reduce surface defects of quantum dots. The shell structure, dosage, and growth temperature have all been taken into account in order to explore better performance of InP QDs. The synthesized green quantum dots have 86 % PLQY and a full width at half maximum of 36 nm. In addition, the synthesized green InP quantum dots are applied in AC QLED devices. The experimental results show that the luminescence intensity is affected by the driving voltage and frequency, which is similar to the working mode of non-carrier-injected emitting devices. And there is a matching value between the voltage and frequency.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an effective energy conversion technology that transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy, providing a new path for the efficient harvesting of irregular tiny mechanical energy and the design of self-powered sensors. However, traditional triboelectric materials with relatively low dielectric constants and surface charge densities, as well as their single functionality, limit the practical application progress and usage scope of TENG. Herein, a simple physical doping method is employed to incorporate ZnS/CaZnOS:Mn 2+ heterojunction into a flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix for the fabrication of mechanoluminescence (ML) triboelectric film with superior properties. Compared with pure PVC film, the dielectric constant (at 100 Hz) and surface charge density of the 4 wt% ZnS/CaZnOS:Mn 2+ /PVC composite film are increased by 1.69 and 1.43 times, respectively. Under a pressure of 0.5 N, the composite film can emit orange light with an intensity of 728, and its thermal decomposition temperature is approximately 50 ℃ higher than that of the pure film. The optimized rotary disc-shaped TENG based on the composite film can generate an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 220 V, a short-circuit current (I sc ) of 24 μA, and a power (P peak ) of 2.3 mW, which can be used to power the normal operation of microelectronic devices. Moreover, a 4 × 4 triboelectric array sensor based on the composite film can accurately recognize human gestures. This work provides a new idea for the design and research of composite triboelectric materials with luminous functions, and offers a reference for the application of ML material-based TENG in energy harvesting and intelligent sensing.

To enhance the utilization of lithium-ion battery anodes, it is crucial to improve both the lithium storage stability and kinetics of transition metal sulfides. This optimization is critical for the development of battery technologies that are more efficient, durable, and environmentally sustainable. In this study, a facile electrospinning technique followed by a thermal treatment was used to fabricate a bimetallic sulfide/porous carbon fiber composite (FeS-ZnS/PCFs). Its stability was largely improved due to the buffered ability derived from its porous structure. The presence of FeS-ZnS grain boundaries fosters the generation of extra redox active sites, ultimately boosting the kinetics of lithium storage. The optimized composite material exhibits excellent stability and efficient lithium storage performance. Density functional theory calculations and kinetics analysis further clarify superior lithium storage capabilities of this material.

This paper presents a simple and effective strategy to construct a UV photodetector based on ZnS hollow-spheres by oil–water interfacial self-assembly of polystyrene (PS)/ZnS colloidal nanospheres followed by annealing treatment. In this approach, PS/ZnS colloidal nanospheres were prepared and then self-assembled into a closely packed PS/ZnS nanofilm at a “hexane–water” interface. By annealing this precursor nanofilm under an optimal condition, a ZnS hollow-sphere nanofilm with a densely packed network structure was obtained. The particle size and morphology of the PS/ZnS colloidal nanospheres and the as-transformed ZnS hollow-spheres were characterized by TEM, HRTEM and SEM. Finally, a UV photodetector was successfully constructed from the as-transformed ZnS hollow-sphere nanofilm.

The detection and imaging of intracellular copper ions (Cu 2+ ) play a crucial role in understanding their physiological implications and their involvement in various cellular processes. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent CIS/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) with excellent biocompatibility and stability. The QDs exhibit exceptional selectivity and sensitivity for Cu 2+ detection, allowing for precise quantification of Cu 2+ content within biological systems. Furthermore, Co-incubation of the QDs with HeLa cells demonstrates their impressive cellular imaging capabilities, facilitated by fluorescence bursts in response to changing Cu 2+ content. Overall, our proposed QDs are of great significance in advancing the research and application of near-infrared semiconductor quantum dots in biomedicine, and their near-infrared fluorescence properties and high fluorescence quantum yield (34.48 %) make them very advantageous for the precise detection of intracellular Cu 2+ and cell fluorescence imaging. This research contributes to the understanding of copper ion dynamics within cells and opens avenues for further exploration of its role in cellular physiology.

Fluorescence nanothermometry based on quantum dots is a current research hotspot for novel non-contact temperature monitoring, and is of vital significance for the modulation and design of the sensing properties of sensors. Herein, a design strategy to modulate the temperature-sensing characteristics of quantum dots based on the thickness of a shell is proposed. In this study, CdSe/ZnS quantum dot/POSS-based temperature probe films with varying fluorescence characteristics were developed, and the influence of the ZnS shell on temperature sensing was examined by varying the thickness of the ZnS shell. The temperature dependency, linearity, range of applications, and reversibility of quantum dot thin film probes were all considerably regulated by the ZnS shell, according to research on quantum dot/POSS-based films coated with various shell thicknesses. The CdSe/ZnS temperature probe with 4 monolayers (MLs) stood out among the rest due to its strong thermal stability (at least 5 cycles), large usable temperature range (20–80 °C), and excellent temperature sensitivity (R2 > 0.994). The results demonstrated that the temperature sensing performance of quantum dots was the consequence of the combined effect of multiple temperature response properties induced by the thickness of the shell, and the shell control of quantum dots to optimize the temperature sensing performance was an essential approach for the design of temperature probes. This work demonstrates the great potential of the shell in tuning the temperature sensing performance of quantum dots and provides a viable approach for the design of quantum dot temperature probes.
