The development of efficient photocatalytic methods for the degradation of neonicotinoid insecticide contamination and the reduction of its toxicity presents significant challenges. Although oxygen vacancies can enhance catalytic performance, they often destabilize the catalyst. In this study, we constructed a self-recovering porous BiOCl with oxygen vacancies (POv-BOCs), which forms an in-lattice electron donor-acceptor system under visible light. In this system, the donor lattice oxygen donates electrons to generate oxygen, while the acceptor lattice Bi accepts these electrons to produce metallic Bi 0 . The released oxygen is captured by Bi 0 , which replace the oxygen vacancies as active sites, thereby endowing POv-BOCs with enhanced stability. The electrophilic characteristics of POv-BOCs significantly improve the degradation performance of neonicotinoid insecticides, and the degradation rate exhibited a positive correlation with their electronic affinity value. Although some nitrated byproducts formed during the degradation process initially increased toxicity, the persistent action of POv-BOCs ultimately induced toxicity reduction. This work presents an effective approach to enhancing the stability and photocatalytic performance of oxygen vacancies, which are highly significant for developing of oxygen vacancy catalytic systems and the degradation of electron-deficient pollutants.

This study develops a visible-light-driven heterogeneous Fenton-like system for the efficient degradation and detoxification of the persistent fluoroquinolone antibiotic gatifloxacin (GAT) in water. Three Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MIL-53(Fe), MIL-88A(Fe), and MIL-101(Fe)) were synthesized and systematically evaluated as catalysts in a visible-light/H2O2process. The three MOFs were systematically characterized, and a comparative analysis was conducted to elucidate how their structural differences influence catalytic performance. Among three MOFs, MIL-88A(Fe) exhibited superior photocatalytic activity, stability, recyclability, and low energy consumption in the visible-light-driven photo-Fenton process, which was attributed to its favorable structural and photo-induced redox properties. Under the optimal conditions (pH 7.2, H2O2dosage of 1.2 mL·L−1, and catalyst loading of 0.1 g·L−1), 95.6% of GAT was degraded within 90 min. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) dominated the oxidation process. Based on intermediate identification, plausible degradation pathways were proposed, accompanied by a pronounced reduction in the ecological risks of transformation products. Furthermore, toxicity assays revealed that both the antibacterial activity and acute toxicity of the treated solutions were significantly alleviated. Overall, the Light/MIL-88A(Fe)/H2O2system offers an effective and sustainable strategy for the removal and detoxification of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from aquatic environments.

Myzus persicae is a globally destructive pest that has evolved severe resistance to neonicotinoids. However, the resistance status and underlying mechanisms in peach orchards of Beijing, China remain largely unknown. In this study, the resistance of six field populations collected from Beijing peach orchards against five neonicotinoids (representing first- to fourth-generation compounds) was investigated, and the molecular mechanisms were elucidated. Bioassays revealed resistance to imidacloprid (15.99–30.97-fold), acetamiprid (9.16–50.79-fold), sulfoxaflor (1.28–25.26-fold), thiamethoxam (6.12–16.95-fold), and dinotefuran (6.63–12.27-fold) across these populations. Mutation screening identified the known R81T and V101I mutations, along with a novel R81S substitution in the nAChR β1 subunit. Genotyping indicated that V101I single mutations were predominant (69.75% of individuals), while R81T/S + V101I combination mutations were detected in 22.56% of individuals. The results revealed that the R81T/S + V101I combination mutations confer substantially higher resistance (73.10–>1146.79-fold) than V101I alone (13.73–394.21-fold) using monoclonal strains. Enzyme activity assays demonstrated that elevated P450 (1.18–1.56-fold), GST (1.32–2.18-fold), and CarE (1.64–2.59-fold) activities are associated with the neonicotinoid resistance across all genotype backgrounds, with PBO showing the strongest synergistic effects (synergism ratios: 1.39–7.90). TPP and DEM exhibited synergism ratios ranging from 0.69 to 3.10. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that all mutations altered nAChR binding-pocket geometry, with combination mutations causing more pronounced structural perturbations and reduced imidacloprid binding affinity than V101I alone. These findings show that target-site mutations and detoxification enzymes act concertedly to drive neonicotinoid resistance in M. persicae , highlighting the need for insecticide rotation for sustainable management.

Hepatopancreas as the main organ detoxifying xenobiotics with higher detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes activities , could best reflected the status of antioxidant defence against virus infection in the organisms. Catalase ( CAT ) and glutathione S-transferase ( GST ) were two important enzymes associated with hepatopancreas antioxidation and detoxification. To obtain the accurate expression levels of CAT and GST gene which reflect the status of hepatopancreas antioxidation and detoxification, two or more reference genes expressed stably under different conditions should be selected for RT-qPCR analysis. In this study, eight candidate reference genes were investigated using RefFinder program to screen the most stable reference gene during virus (white spot syndrome virus, WSSV) infection and drug (matrine) treatments in Procambarus clarkii , the relative expression levels and the activities of CAT and GST in hepatopancreas were detected and compared to verify the validity of selected reference genes. The results showed that taken different tissues together, EIF and EF1 α were the most stable and unstable reference genes respectively in P. clarkii no matter under different WSSV infection periods (0, 24, 48, 72 h) or different matrine treatment methods according to RefFinder analysis. The optimal number of reference genes in hepatopancreas was two using geNorm analysis, i.e. EIF and TBP , which were top two most stable reference genes in hepatopancreas. Moreover, based on the comparison between the relative expression levels and the activities of CAT and GST, EIF and TBP as reference genes were proved to be necessary and practicable to evaluate hepatopancreas antioxidation during WSSV infection and matrine treatments. Besides, the optimal number of reference genes in other P. clarkii tissues was also two genes, i.e. EIF and TUB in intestine, EIF and EF1α in muscle, EIF and GAPDH in gills, EIF and TBP in brain , TBP and UB in gonads . Our study was helpful to acquire the accurate data of antioxidation and detoxification-related and immune-related gene expression during virus infection and drug treatments in crayfish, especially in hepatopancreas tissues

Visible-light purification of contaminated waters is often constrained by rapid charge recombination and strong matrix interference, especially in complex real wastewaters. Here, we upcycled rice-noodle waste into carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and integrated them with ZnIn 2 S 4 to construct three-dimensional CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers. Optimising the CQDs loading at 3 wt% enabled the composite to remove 50 mg L −1 of pollutants within 120 min under visible irradiation, achieving 99.3% Cr(VI) reduction and complete methylene blue (MB) degradation with apparent first-order rate constants of 0.0192 min −1 (Cr(VI)) and 0.0223 min −1 (MB). The photocatalyst resisted matrix inhibition, with removals reaching 93.1% (Cr(VI)) and 91.6% (MB) in wastewaters, and above 95% in tap, lake and river waters; catalytic activity was retained above 95% after five reuse cycles. Valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) band alignment analysis, together with transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence (PL)and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical-trapping experiments collectively verified an S-scheme CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction with an interfacial built-in electric field that drives vectorial charge separation and preserves highly reductive electrons and oxidative holes at spatially distinct sites. This waste-to-resource strategy couples low-cost carbon precursors with interfacial band engineering to deliver a scalable, visible-light-driven platform for simultaneous detoxification of inorganic (Cr(VI)) and organic dye pollutants in realistic treatment scenarios.

The excessive reliance on traditional fossil fuels has not only triggered an energy shortage crisis but also caused severe environmental pollution. These pollutants can significant accumulate via the process of bioaccumulation within the food chain, ultimately posing a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the development of efficient and precise water quality monitoring technologies is crucial for the prevention and control of environmental pollution. In this study, a g-C 3 N 4 -FeCoNi layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterostructure material (g-C 3 N 4 -LDH) was successfully synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method. The formation of an n–n heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and LDH facilitates efficient interfacial charge transfer and structural stabilization, which is critical for bifunctional applications. Consequently, the constructed g-C 3 N 4 -LDH sensing platform exhibits good performance in 4-NP detection, with a sensitivity of 0.664 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 , a linear response range of 5–800 μM, and a low detection limit of 0.67 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the platform demonstrates strong resistance to interference and excellent stability. Additionally, g-C 3 N 4 -LDH can completely degrade 4-NP within 10 min, effectively detoxifying the pollutants. This study offers new insights and a solid foundation for the rapid and accurate detection and treatment of water pollutants.

Background The synergic action of compound prescriptions is an important feature and core advantage of traditional medicine. Ginseng-Fuzi decoction is a classic compatible phytomedicine in China, of which Ginseng can effectively reduce the toxicity of Fuzi in clinical, but the detoxification chemical mechanism is still unclear. Purpose Develop a novel method for real-time tracking and monitoring of complex substances in the decoction system of traditional Chinese medicine to uncover the detoxification effect Ginseng on Fuzi and explore the possible chemical reaction mechanism of Ginseng-Fuzi co-decoction. Methods A novel real-time monitoring system, online filtration electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, was developed for extremely complex substances analysis in the decoction of traditional medicine compounds to uncover the directionally detoxification effect and the mechanism of compatibility interaction. Results Nine key alkaloids and 7 ginsenosides in Ginseng-Fuzi decoction were simultaneously in-situ monitoring in positive ion mode or negative ion mode respectively. Both types of targeted analytes had satisfactory MS signal response for real-time qualitative and quantitative analysis with high precision (RSD < 14.04%) and low LLODs (0.002 ng/ml-10 ng/ml). Through long-term tracking analysis, the exact detoxification and synergistic effect of Ginseng-Fuzi decoction were confirmed as the concentration of main toxic alkaloids decreased ( e.g. the content of mesaconitine has been reduced by about 38%) and the main active monoester alkaloids increased obviously. More importantly, the possible molecular mechanism of the detoxification effect of Ginseng compatibility was revealed for the first time, which was the nucleophilic substitution reaction of diester alkaloids catalyzed by fatty acids. Conclusion This study revealed the exact effect of co-decoction of Ginseng and Fuzi at the molecular level and the chemical reaction mechanism of fatty acid-catalyzed degradation of toxic diester-type alkaloids. The comprehensive multi-component real-time monitoring strategy for complex traditional medicine compounds developed and implemented here has important demonstration significance for revealing the scientific connotation of the compatibility of compound traditional medicine.

Celastrol (Cel) is a monomer from a famous traditional Chinese medicine named Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f . Cel has shown great potential in treating intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) but still faces problems, including poor water solubility, high toxicity, and lack of targeting ability. Thus, the present work constructed a drug-delivery system using black fungus polysaccharide self-assembled -nanotubes (BFP). Cel-loaded nanotubes (BFP-Cel) were confirmed to have a high loading content of Cel (38 %), liver targeting, and enzyme-controlled release abilities. Moreover, BFP carriers could significantly increase the uptake efficiency of Cel by tumor cells. In vivo experiments showed that BFP-Cel could effectively inhibit tumor growth and reduce the physiological toxicity of Cel. Furthermore, BFP, as a carrier, could regulate the immune microenvironment in the liver through the activation of macrophages and play an immunomodulatory role. In summary, the BFP nanotube carrier could achieve detoxification and efficacy enhancement of Cel in treating ICC by increasing the targetability, controlled release ability, cell-uptake effect, and regulation of the immune microenvironment.

Spent lithium-ion battery electrolytes contain fluorine-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-bearing toxins, necessitating deep detoxification and directional conversion into C1–C6light hydrocarbons. To elucidate the specific catalytic roles and sequential activation of cathode metals (Li, Ni, Co, Mn), this work systematically deconvolutes their mono- and multi-metallic migration mechanisms over a CaO-ZSM-5* catalyst during vacuum catalytic pyrolysis (530 °C, 100 Pa). Results reveal that Li+and Ni2+dominate C–O bond cleavage in carbonates and CaO-ZSM-5*-assisted decarboxylation and oxygen fixation, significantly increasing the relative hydrocarbon content. Conversely, Co2/3+and Mn4+release reactive oxygen species, causing deep oxidation of hydrocarbons into CO2and antagonizing the targeted conversion. In multi-metallic systems, forming composite metal oxides (MxNyOz) increases the energy barrier for releasing active catalytic ions, hindering carbonate cleavage and leaving unreacted carbonate feedstocks. For detoxification, F and P are effectively immobilized as CaF2and Ca2P2O7. The relative content of detected gas-phase nitriles is minimized to <2% due to the strong antagonistic effect of Ni2+on Li+-promoted hexanedinitrile cleavage, while sulfur species derived from 1,3-propane sultone are converted to SO2and ultimately mineralized as calcium and metal-sulfur salts. Mechanistically, product distributions and crystallographic properties suggest a hypothesized sequential activation model—Li+→ Ni2+→ Mn4+—governing reactivity, whereas Co2/3+does not participate in the synergistic detoxification and selective upgrading process. This migration–reaction coupling framework provides critical insights for cathode-assisted in situ catalytic pyrolysis and closed-loop electrolyte recycling.

Piezo-photocatalytic processes based on heterogeneous catalysts, by establishing electronic fast track to realize electronic storage and conversion, are proved to be effective ways to improve the efficiency of PMS activation. Herein, α-SnWO 4 /ZnO catalyst with p-n heterojunction was constructed to testify the piezo-photocatalytic effect on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for pollution control. The decomposition rate of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the piezo-photocatalytic PMS activation process by α-SnWO 4 /ZnO heterojunction was 12.6 and 5.2 times to that by ZnO and α-SnWO 4 processes, respectively. In addition, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of CBZ reached 89%, and TOC in the actual water body was also effectively removed. Free radical quenching and detection experiments showed that nonradicals ( 1 O 2 ) and free radicals (O 2 − , OH) were the mainly active species of the process, by which the toxicity of the intermediates of CBZ was significantly reduced by the combination of the radical and nonradical pathways through hydroxylation and singlet oxygen oxidation . Furthermore, the influences of the experimental factors, including the initial pH, PMS concentration, temperature and reuse of catalysts on CBZ degradation were evaluated. Notably, the activation energy (Ea) in this work was calculated as 34.2 kJ mol −1 , which was lower than that of other reported systems. Overall, this work can scientifically guide the design of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts to use common metals for efficient activation of PMS as economical alternatives over expensive rare metal catalysts for water purification.

Water stress encumbers the rapeseed growth and development primarily by oxidative alteration to biological membranes and interrupted tissue water status. Seedling tolerance to water stress is vital for better crop development through the entire period under drought stress condition. The enhancement of plant stress tolerance due to melatonin application is already known; however, the specific underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. The current study was done to investigate the effect of melatonin-priming on rapeseed germination and subsequent seedling growth under PEG-6000 simulated drought stress. Drought stress significantly inhibited germination and seedling growth, led to oxidative stress from excessive H 2 O 2 generation, and reduced the chlorophyll content. Melatonin-priming alleviated the oxidative damage and the amount of chlorophyll reduction in rapeseed seedlings under the drought stress. The stomatal traits such as number, stomatal length and width were greatly improved in melatonin-primed treatment. Melatonin-priming also preserved the chloroplast structure, maintained cells expansion and strengthened the cell wall in response to drought stress. The results revealed that the ameliorative effects of melatonin-priming may be ascribed to enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activities, increase in the content of non-enzymatic antioxidants, and increase in the amounts of osmo-protectants. The present data suggest that priming seeds with melatonin can be a prime strategy regarding the development of crop drought resistant in crop production.

The unregulated use and abuse of bisphenol analogues (BPs) have led to a sharp increase in environmental concentrations. Although photocatalytic technology can effectively degrade these compounds, insufficient attention has been paid to the ecological risks posed by both the parent compounds and their degradation products. In this study, BiVO 4 co-modified with oxygen vacancies and carbon (BVO-3) was successfully prepared via molecular intercalation combined with calcination. This material exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance toward various BPs. Structural characterization and in-situ spectral analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies act as a dynamic “electron reservoir”, working synergistically with carbon doping to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Carbon doping not only enhances pollutant adsorption through π–π conjugation but also, together with oxygen vacancies, improves the activation of molecular oxygen. Toxicity assessment revealed that although the parental toxicity order was BPAF > BPF > BPA, the intermediates of BPAF and BPF exhibited a transient toxicity surge exceeding that of their parent compounds during the early photocatalytic stage. This is attributed to the generation of numerous breakdown products that retain the core toxic structure. In contrast, no such effect was observed for BPA. These findings indicate that, contrary to their intended purpose as safer alternatives, BPAF and BPF pose higher ecological risks during environmental transformation due to the formation of highly toxic intermediates. This study not only developed a method for constructing efficient modified photocatalysts but also proposed that “transformation process toxicity evolution” should be included in the comprehensive ecological risk assessment of pollutants and their substitutes.
