Effect of Mg(OH)2 and sintering temperature on the hydration resistance of CaO aggregate by thermal decomposition

Zhang Tao,Wei Yaowu,Chen Junfeng,Li Nan

In spite of the advantages of CaO refractories, such as high refractoriness, potential to produce pure steel molten, and high alkaline corrosion resistance, their application has been limited due to its poor hydration resistance. Introducing additives to improve the hydration resistance of lime is a novel method. The influences of Mg(OH) 2 and sintering temperatures on the sintering and hydration resistance of CaO aggregates that were produced by thermal decomposition were investigated in this paper. The purpose of this work was to produce high-purity CaO raw material with high density, low porosity, well grain growth, and good hydration resistance economically. The sintered samples were characterized by bulk density, apparent porosity, surface appearance, and microstructure. The results indicated that (1) Mg(OH) 2 promoted the grain growth of CaO, reduced the apparent porosity, and improved the density of the specimens. The hydration resistance of the samples was increased. (2) Increasing the sintering temperature improved the hydration resistance of the specimens obviously in the experiment. (3) Grain size of CaO was more uniform with the increment of Mg(OH) 2 content, and the density of the compacts was improved.

Hydrate-based adsorption-hydration hybrid approach enhances methane storage in wet MIL-101(Cr)@AC under mild condition

Guodong Zhang,Zhe Liu,Yaning Kong,Fei Wang

Hydrate-based adsorption and hydration natural gas (AHNG) technology was reported to achieve large methane storage density under mild conditions. In order to enhance methane uptake, a composite nano porous material of MIL-101(Cr)@AC was prepared through fluorine-free hydrothermal reaction, and methane adsorption isotherms for both dry and wet samples were measured under hydrate favorable conditions. Hydrate in-situ formation loaded by the composite material was also carried out, while hydrate kinetics was evaluated by Raman spectrum. It was found that MIL-101(Cr) remains cubic symmetric structure when activated carbon (AC) was doped, but its size decreases with the increase in AC doping amount, while the specific surface area and pore volume significantly increase, and this enhances methane adsorption that increases by 65.58%. More enhanced methane uptake was obtained when wet sample was applied due to adsorption and hydration synergy, wherein methane physical adsorption ability remains, while formed hydrate stores extra methane. The contribution of hydrate to methane uptake is up to 40%, so large methane storage density is anticipated, methane volumetric uptake is up to 179.3 V/V under a mild condition (9.3 MPa and 274.15 K), which increases by 38.03%. Compared with our recently reported ZIF-8@AC, methane storage capacity in this new material increases by 36.5% (Chem. Eng. J., 2023, 455, 140503). In addition, hydrate progressive growth with the increase in adsorption pressure was observed, the area ratio of hydrate large cages to small one finally approaches to the theoretical value of 3:1, suggesting approximately complete conversion of pre-adsorbed water.

The effect of magnetic field on the hydration of cation in solution revealed by THz spectroscopy and MDs

Yanqi Gu,Shayu Li,Yuehong Xu,Jiaguang Han,Miao Gu,Zhipeng Cai,Yan lv,Guoxin Xie,Tianbao Ma,Jianbin Luo

The influence of an external magnetic field on the picosecond network dynamics of the salt (KCl) solution is investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Because hydration changes the motions of water molecules clusters, we test hydration by measuring the change of dielectric loss caused by the slow relaxation of water molecules clusters. We find experimentally that the magnetic field enhances the number of water molecules involved in hydration and the radius of dynamic hydration layer in salt solutions. However, with the increasing concentration, there is a downward in the hydration enhancement per equivalent. Meanwhile, the simulated results show the number of water molecules in hydration layers increases which is consistent with our experimental results. Besides, the simulation reveals that external magnetic field mainly affects the second hydration layer and the stability of water molecules network in hydration layer is enhanced with external magnetic field .

Enhanced early hydration and mechanical properties of cement-based materials with recycled concrete powder modified by nano-silica

Xiaoyan Liu,Li Liu,Kai Lyu,Tianyu Li,Pingzhong Zhao,Ruidan Liu,Junqing Zuo,Feng Fu,Surendra P. Shah

In recent years, an ever-increasing amount researchers dedicated themselves to exploring the possibility of introducing recycled concrete powder (RCP) into concrete as a substitute for cement. To optimize the effect of RCP on cement-based materials, this paper uses nano-silica (NS) to learn the hydration and mechanical properties of cement-based materials with RCP. The results indicated that after adding NS into RCP-cement pastes, the setting time of cement pastes was significantly reduced, while the samples' early hydration rate and hydration heat increased. Besides, the mechanical strength of the mortar decreased as RCP replaced part of the cement, while 2% NS can compensate for the mechanical strength loss of mortar caused by RCP as supplementary cementing materials. The X-ray computer tomography (X-ray CT) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) results showed that RCP increased mortar's pore volume fraction and porosity. In contrast, NS in RCP blended mortar significantly decreased the number of pores with a pore volume between 0.01 and 0.03 mm 3 and increased the proportion of harmless pores (From 28.6% to 31.4%). Hence, NS reduced the pore volume fraction and porosity of mortar. The results of X-ray CT and MIP showed that NS could refine the pore size in RCP blended mortar. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) further revealed that the existence of NS can eliminate the adverse effects brought by RCP.

Calcium Chloride Activation of Acid-Washed Sewage Sludge Ash: Hydration Mechanism and Performance as a Supplementary Cementitious Material

Weiwei Zhu,Yi Ren,Yaxin Xiao,Shaoyu Du,Xiaoli Xie,Kao Chen

Due to the fact that municipal sludge incineration generates a large amount of toxic sewage sludge ash (SSA), cement solidification is becoming an efficient harmless treatment method. However, the large amount of phosphorus in sludge ash can delay the setting time of cement pastes and lead to a decrease in its later strength. Moreover, as an important non-renewable resource, the recycling and utilization of phosphorus is also a current research hotspot. To this end, this paper proposes to remove phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) by the acid washing process, and, in response to the problem of reduced volcanic ash activity in acid-washed sewage sludge ash (ASSA), calcium chloride (CaCl2) is added as an activator to explore the optimal process and hydration mechanism for enhancing ASSA activity. This study removed phosphorus from calcined SSA (800 °C, 2 h) via acid washing (0.3 mol/L H2SO4, L/S = 10:1, 2 h) to obtain ASSA, and used CaCl2as an activator to improve its pozzolanic activity. Different CaCl2dosages (1–3%) were tested for paste setting time, 3/7/28 d compressive strength, and characterized by hydration heat, XRD, SEM, etc. Experimental results indicated that the synergistic addition of 2 wt.% CaCl2and 20 wt.% ASSA shortened the initial and final setting times by 38% and 23% to 142 min and 289 min, respectively. Meanwhile, the compressive strength at 28 days was improved by 24%, with a final strength value of 42 MPa. Microanalysis revealed abundant Friedel’s salt formation and a denser structure (fine mesopores 60%, coarse mesopores 26%), confirming CaCl2effectively activates ASSA for cement admixture use.

Hydration-Driven Self-Gelling Particulate Embolic Agent for Precise and Stable Occlusion of Hemorrhagic Vessels with Collateral Circulation

Shengchao Zhao,Honggang Shi,Yang Sun,Yang Shi,Xiaoting Zhang,Jinyan Gu,Jinming Fan,Feile Ye,Jiayuan Lin,Dalin Ye,Jiawen Chen,Yun Zhang,Yajun Yuan,Sicheng Zuo,Szewa Huang,Yi Zhuang,Mankit Chan,Bin Zhou,Xin Peng

Embolization of hemorrhagic small vessels with collateral circulation remains challenges, as conventional liquid agents often cause nontarget embolization and particulate agents are prone to recanalization. Herein, we develop an injectable embolic system (PP/DMSO/I) based on hydration-driven self-gelling polyethylenimine/poly(acrylic acid) (PP) particles that seamlessly combines the controllable embolic size of particulate agents with the stable occlusion of liquid agents. Upon intravascular delivery, DMSO transports size-sieved PP particles to the target blood vessel, where they aggregate due to size-restricted trapping, achieving precise embolization without distal migration. Subsequent solvent exchange with blood triggers rapid hydration and fusion of PP particles into a continuous and adaptive hydrogel in situ that definitively occludes the lumen. In a typical hemorrhagic collateral circulation model (hemorrhagic point in anastomotic arcade between mesenteric artery of the rabbit), PP/DMSO/I achieves superior hemostasis (blood loss: 2.1 ± 0.3 g), significantly outperforming commercial particulate embolic agent (3.7 ± 0.4 g) and matching the efficacy of commercial liquid embolic agents (2.3 ± 0.4 g and 2.1 ± 0.6 g). Crucially, unlike commercial liquid embolic agent, it eliminated the risk of nontarget embolization and distal infarction. This hydration-driven self-gelling particulate embolic system represents a paradigm shift in embolization therapy, offering a precise, durable, and safe solution for managing hemorrhage in complex vascular networks.

Phosphorylated Zwitterionic Fluorinated Polyimide Membranes: Molecular Hydration Dominated Blood Contacting Bio-Interface for Enhancing Antifouling, Anticoagulation, and Biocompatibility

Xun Wang,Yin Qiao,Zesheng Song,Lirong Yang,Yang Yu,Ziye Yu,Chu Zeng,Sitong Peng,Feng Liu

Polyimide (PI) is recognized as a high-performance biomaterial membrane due to its high mechanical strength, excellent biocompatibility, biological stability, and highly tunable chemical structure. However, the intrinsic hydrophobicity of PI blood fluid contact ultrafiltration (UF) membrane materials poses risks related to separation efficiency and stability, as well as complications arising from biofouling and immune cascades. In this study, benzimidazolium-based phosphorylated zwitterionic PI (BI-ZFPI-Me/Et/ i -Pr) polymers were synthesized via polycondensation and phosphorylation using three different reagents (MeOEP, EtOEP, and i-PrOEP). These polymers were then used to prepare intrinsic flat-sheet blood-contacting UF membranes via NIPS. All phosphorylated zwitterionic PI membranes not only exhibited reduced water contact angle (19.8°/17.0°/16.8°vs. 57.2°) but also demonstrated superior UF performance, with FRR values exceeding 93% and cycle stability far surpassing that of the pristine BI-FPI membrane (76.9%). Among the three zwitterionic membranes, BI-ZFPI-Me, due to its optimal hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance, showed excellent hemocompatibility—including a hemolysis rate < 0.5%, high plasma recalcification time (28 min), and anti-complement activation—while BI-ZFPI- i -Pr exhibited the best cell viability (93.3%), enhanced endothelial cell compatibility, and promoted M2 macrophage polarization. This study indicates that intrinsic zwitterionic phosphate polyimides show promising potential in biomaterial separation membranes due to excellent multifunctional biological anti-fouling, anticoagulation, and biocompatibility.

Frog-skin- and mussel-inspired hierarchical silicone coatings with self-renewing hydration for durable marine antifouling and anticorrosion

Huali Li,Xinbo Zhao,Liuqin Zhang,Wenkai Cao,Minghua Qu,Guangyu Zhu,Faqian Liu,Weihua Li

Self-renewing hydration interfaces are engineered via bioinspired hierarchical silicone coatings (PIS-MH x ). • Dynamic chitosan–catechol networks and microstructured surfaces enable sustained lubrication and interfacial stability. • Strong interfacial adhesion and up to ∼85% suppression of corrosion propagation are achieved. • Near-complete inhibition of mussel, barnacle, and tubeworm attachment is demonstrated in long-term marine tests. Marine biofouling and corrosion severely compromise the long-term reliability of ships and submerged infrastructures. Conventional silicone coatings, limited by static interfacial properties and weak adhesion, are prone to biofouling during prolonged marine exposure, as well as crevice corrosion and expansion caused by interfacial debonding. Here, a bioinspired silicone-hydrogel coating is proposed that synergistically integrates frog-skin-like hydrated microtextures with mussel-inspired, catechol-mediated adhesion to enable robust, multiscale interfacial regulation. Upon seawater immersion, the hydrogel component establishes a stable bound-water layer and enables pH-responsive, on-demand release of antifouling ions. Meanwhile, hierarchical micro-wrinkled architectures reduce effective adhesion sites, stabilize interfacial hydration layer, and promote localized enrichment of antifouling ions, thereby enhancing surface performance. The catechol-coordinated interface improves adhesion strength of the coating, efficiently suppressing corrosive ions permeation, and reducing corrosion-diffusion areas by approximately 85%. Density functional theory calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and confocal laser scanning microscope results further reveal the formation of a dynamic and self-renewable hydration layer under continuous immersion. Field deployment for nearly five months demonstrates near-complete inhibition of barnacles and tubeworms attachment (∼100%). This dual-channel strategy, combining microstructural modulation with adaptive chemical adhesion, overcomes two critical issues of antifouling and interface stability of silicone coatings, offering an effective solution for durable antifouling and corrosion protection of marine infrastructure. A bioinspired silicone–hydrogel coating (PIS-MH x ) integrates frog-skin hydration microtextures and mussel-inspired catechol adhesion to construct a multiscale coupled interface. The coating establishes a stable hydration layer, suppresses corrosion diffusion by up to ∼85%, and achieves excellent antifouling over five months of marine field immersion, providing an effective solution for durable antifouling and anticorrosion protection of marine infrastructure. Feasibility study of gypsum as an electrode binder for building structural batteries: hydration process, electrochemical and mechanical properties

Deng Jingxiao,Liu Chuanbei,Wen Jianwu,Deng Yongjun,Liu Haifeng,Luo Xu,Zhang Lihua,Liu Laibao

Building structural batteries present broad prospects for future energy storage and zero-energy buildings. However, building structural batteries prepared with cement-based materials currently face technical challenges such as high internal resistance, low energy density, and poor cycle stability. Therefore, through tests such as hydration heat, electrochemical performance, and mechanical properties, this study systematically explores the feasibility and mechanism of using gypsum as an electrode binder to construct building structural batteries. The research results show that gypsum is not electrochemically active and primarily provides mechanical strength in the electrode material. It does not affect the lithium-ion intercalation and deintercalation process in the active material, making it fully feasible as a binder for structural electrodes. As the gypsum content increases, the internal resistance of the electrode material increases, the specific capacity decreases, but the cycling stability improves, and the compressive strength increases. The active material and conductive agent in the electrode promote early gypsum setting and hardening but hinder the later hydration process. When the mass ratio of gypsum to active material to conductive agent is controlled at 8:1:1, the discharge capacity and compressive strength of the electrode material can reach 90 mAh/g and 11.69 MPa, respectively, which shows promise for developing high-performance gypsum-based building structural batteries.

Structural reorganization of hydration-limited soft-matter: mechanistic and sustainability insights for micro-aqueous extraction of fish oil

Shenghai Liu,Yuxuan Liang,Wei Gong,Kaiyu Jiang,Xiuping Dong,Beiwei Zhu,Juncai Tu

Conventional lipid extraction from fish by-products typically relies on high water input and disruption by thermal or hydrolysis to break emulsions and release oil. This study introduces a fundamentally reversed mechanism by micro-aqueous extraction (MAE). This method induces oil release via limited hydration and reassembly of the soft matter without heat or dilution. This MAE approach first dehydrates fish by-products until moisture content reaching ~18%, reassembly forming a protein–lipid matrix of high internal phase emulsion gel (φ ~75%). Upon controlled micro-aqueous hydration and low-shear agitation, structured proteins aggregate and destabilize oil droplets and release entrapped oil. Compared to heat extraction (HE), MAE achieved higher oil recovery (94.3% vs. 76.4%), shortened processing time by 35%, and decreased oil total oxidation value (TOTOX 1.33 vs. 2.88). Life cycle assessment confirmed lower environmental burden with 62% reduction in CO₂ emission. The fish meal obtained by MAE retained superior emulsifying activity and structural integrity. Mechanistically, micro-aqueous hydration reduced α-helix content of proteins and decreased oil droplet stability, thereby promoting demulsification. In contrast, drying at 60 °C resulted in lower turbidity and smaller aggregation size of myofibrillar proteins compared to drying at 30 °C, which enhanced their interfacial stabilization. Rheological analysis further revealed that water-limited restructuring of the myofibrillar network played a critical role in controlling viscoelasticity (as reflected by G', G'') and extraction efficiency. This work reveals a counterintuitive pathway for oil recovery, governed by moisture-regulated soft-matter reorganization, which presents a low-energy, high-yield, and sustainable approach for fish by-product valorisation.

Demulsification of oil-in-water emulsions with long cleaning interval by superhydrophilic copper foams with enhanced hydration capacity

Zehao Chen,Yunjia Wang,Xuekai Jin,Zhuoyue Tian,Yunpeng Zhang,Xiufang Wen,Jihao Zuo,Pihui Pi

Three-dimensional superhydrophilic materials, with large pores and extensive permeation channels, can achieve high-flux separation of oil-in-water emulsions. However, complex internal structure and high specific surface area also lead to severe oil contamination during the separation process, resulting in rapid declines in separation efficiency and permeation flux, necessitating frequent cleaning and significantly limiting their practical applications. The oleophobicity of superhydrophilic materials mainly relies on the hydration layer on the surface. Enhancing the combination strength of superhydrophilic surfaces to water can effectively reduce the hydration layer damage caused by oil, thereby extending the demulsification lifespan of the material. In this study, we enhance the hydration strength of the copper foam surface by constructing a special pocket-like nano structure and endowing it with a substantial number of hydrated groups. During continuous separation of oil-in-water emulsions, the copper foam filter can achieve a separation efficiency exceeding 99.1 % and a permeation flux greater than 20,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 . In cyclic separation tests, under conditions where the cleaning interval up to 150 mL of emulsion, the declined efficiency remains at 98.4 %, while the declined flux exceeds 18,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 . The cleaning interval is as high as 85 mL·cm −2 . Furthermore, after cleaning, both the separation efficiency and permeation flux of the copper foam can be completely restored, significantly outperforming the copper foam without hydration strengthen modification and various other three-dimensional materials.

Self-limited and reversible surface hydration of Na2Fe(SO4)2 cathodes for long-cycle-life Na-ion batteries

Zhilin Zheng,Xiaoqiao Li,Yong Wang,Yunlong Zhang,Yufeng Jiang,Yu-Shi He,Chao Niu,Haiying Che,Linsen Li,Zi-Feng Ma

Air stability is a crucial factor in the practical application of a battery material, as it profoundly affects the material's preparation, storage, and electrode fabrication processes. Sodium iron sulfate cathodes, despite their attractive attributes in cost and electrochemical performance, are widely believed to be unstable upon air exposure because of the sulfate group. Here we report remarkable air-stability of the Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 -based (NFS) cathodes (minimal decay in 20 % RH air for 60 days, 91.9 % capacity retention after 3500 cycles in half cells) and their outstanding cycle performance in practically relevant pouch-type full cells (∼100 Wh kg -1 specific energy, >1000 cycle-life). Although the NFS cathodes do react with moisture H 2 O to produce Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 ⋅4H 2 O but the hydration is spatially confined at the NFS particles’ surface and not propagating into their bulk. Further, the structural changes are reversible when the surface-hydrated NFS particles are heated in the typical electrode vacuum-drying process, avoiding extra treatment and additional cost. This work reveals the promising properties of the NFS cathode materials towards high-performance and sustainable Na-ion batteries.
